  • Great actors become great because they take big risks and make bold character choices. It makes them stand out and it prevents them from being typecast and pigeonholed into playing the same character trope throughout their career.
However, sometimes taking risks and making bold choices can lead to a star actor falling flat on their face. There are many ways it can happen. One is when a star actor takes on characters who have different accents from their own.
Actors can employ accent coaches and spend hours practicing an accent to get a feel for its cadence but if they don’t have an ear for it, it could be trouble. Here are the worst on-screen accents of all time.

Tom Cruise in Far and Away (Great movie and Cruise is good other than his accent) Dick Van Dyke in Marry Poppins and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (unless somewhere in England they talk like that) Dana Carvey in Master of Disguise (need I say more?) And lastly Sean Connery in Hunt for Red October. (Love this movie and love Connery in it but let's face it his "Russian" accent is no good.)

Although the fake accent is not the worst part of the performance, Mickey Rooney's accent in "Breakfast at Tiffany's" was completely wrong. Check out makeup artist Kazuhiro Tsuji's acceptance speech from this year's Oscar ceremony. That's the authentic Japanese accent. Believe me, I am a Japanese myself with the same thick accent. ;)

Lol that usually bugs me too when yanks say British accent meaning English accent. I'm from Dundee, they're in for a shock if they are expecting me to sound bloody English 😂.
No such thing as "British accent" there are however British *accents*.

I see Americans confusing Britain with England all the time. If you are English, you are British.
If you're British, you could be from anywhere in Great Britain, not just England. It's that simple.
I saw an American post a meme where a bunch of countries were against GB. It showed men
pointing swords at a map & they were labelled as countries, including Northern Ireland, Scotland & Wales...

Now you need to do actors whose LACK of an accent on film is so well done, when you hear them speaking off camera, you have no idea they are the same person. Hugo Weaving, Hugh Jackman, Michael Fassbender, James Mcavoy, and Tom Hiddleston are some that come to mind.

I don't agree with Angelina jolie being on this list. for one, her character, Olympia, came from a different land than her husband, therefore giving her an accent helped indicate that she was a foreigner to them. that's why she wasn't well-liked when her marriage was arranged with Philip. they didn't like that she was different. also, we DON'T KNOW what ancient Macedonians sounded like! we literally cannot be sure about that. everyone in the movie had their own accent, bc it was hard to pin down any particular accent, therefore jolie making a strong attempt to sound different was actually good of her. and I didn't think Brad Pitt sounded terrible in Devil's Own. I admit that his accent wasn't perfect, tho, but he did a strong attempt.

A couple of these films were about people who didn't speak modern English in any kind of English/American/Aussie accent. Robin Hood would have spoken Old English which is close to German. The worst thing about most of the historical movies is that they don't have a standard accent for the whole cast. Robin Hood didn't have to have a received English accent. They just needed to have one agreed on accent for them all. If they wanted to have some sort of Greek accent in "Alexander" they should have developed one and taught it to everyone.

It's actually quite well known that Kevin Costner flat out refused to speak with a British accent in the movie Prince of Thieves. There was no attempt made to even try it out at the beginning of the shoot. Either way, accent or no accent, Kevin Costner was seriously miscast in the role of Robin Hood. It's a shame too because Alan Rickman is amazing in the movie. Rickman is so over the top in his performance as the Sherif of Nottingham and it's a real trip to watch.

The irony being that Costner's accent in Robin Hood Prince of Thieves is actually more historically accurate than any of the English accents in the film. The English accent as we know it didn't develop until long after English settlers started coming to America. The American accent came from the original English accent while the modern English accents are anachronisms that couldn't possibly exist in the Robin Hood era.

    • @sammysoppy3361
      @sammysoppy3361 6 років тому +1

I think this is correct more or less. I read that the common British accent we know today that drops the R sounds, didn’t really exist prior to like the 1700’s or something like that, when it became fashionable to speak that way. Something about how it represented you as a higher class or something like that. And that the British accent before that was different, most likely they did pronounce their R’s like Americans do, and it might have resembled our accent more than what we commonly know of the General British accent .....but none of us will ever truly know for real unless we invent a time machine. So yeah, so called historical accuracy here isn’t so cut and dry

Jolie deserves some leeway here. I teach history in college and have had students watch Alexander in the past (for what it’s worth, Stone was commendably faithful to the source material-even if the film’s flow and drama suffered as a result). Regardless, having looked into the background of the film, I feel compelled to stand up for Jolie’s accent, as well as those of Farrell, Kilmer, and (cringe) Leto. Alexander, Philip, and Hephaistion were Macedonian and, therefore, not considered proper Greeks by their Greek contemporaries (who, you will note, speak with an English accent, per the director’s vision to highlight this “civilized” disparity). The Scots and Irish accents of the Macedonians in the film were conscientious director decisions meant to do the same. As for Olympia (Jolie), she was neither Greek nor Macedonian. Her Eastern European accent was meant to highlight her outsider status. If it still sounds too much like a vampire, that’s fine-the real Olympia came from an area not too far away from modern Transylvania.

Davis Foghorn Peter Sellers, who to me was & always will be Inspector Clouseau, had a terrific ear for accents but he did a parody of the French Accent intentionally for comedic effect. Steve Martin was just doing that as well,he just wasn't funny in the part(though he's a talented comedian in his own right👍)

Keeping Irish accents in Alexander makes sense. They spoke Greek, but with a strange accent. Irish conveys that well.

Alexander's mother Olympias wasn't Macedonian, she was from Eprius, which was between modern day Greece and Albania. I always took the accent as a means to highlight her in the film as 'foreign' compared to the Macedonians and too add to the mystique of her apparent snake cult worship originally described by Plutarch.
