By "can't do accents" I would've thought you meant, "tried to do an accent & failed", not that "won't".

Well, Keanu has done English, surfer dude, and southern accents more than once. Apart from his old surfer accent, the only one he probably nailed was his accent in The Gift. Yeah, he's not known for doing accents, but he's surprisingly done more than any of the actors mentioned on this list.

Sean Connnery is well placed on this list, although he did have a slight Irish accent in The Untouchables.

But for some unknown reason he dropped it when it came to filming the movie. Much to his coach's annoyance.

"playing a Nazi officer without a German accent" WELL THANK GOD HE DID!
Jesus. Why do people always do this, it's so terrible. Firstly, the accents they put on are usually straight up offensive.
Secondly, get this: A German wouldn't be speaking to another German in English with a German accent. They wouldn't be speaking English at all, they would speak German. So, basically everyone is pretending they were all talking in their mother tongue, meaning for the length of the movie English=German, right? And we don't have any kind of foreign accent when we speak our own language, so why would they have an accent in the movie? It just makes it seem like they're actually foreigners and confuse you about whether or not the character is actually German.
They ruined entire movies with that horrible notion that "hey every actor in this movie that takes place ENTIRELY IN GERMANY where ALL THE CHARACTERS ARE GERMAN should speak like an embarrassing old bavarian German politician trying to communicate with other nations" - this is how they ruined The Book Thief...
Don't blame Tom Cruise for being the only one who got the concept right!

Guys like him and Van Damme actually had their own personal (language) coaches to make sure they did NOT lose their accents from living in America. Their accents were their bread and butter and they knew it. They weren't afraid of their accents, it was the other way around - they were afraid of losing the accent and losing branding.

I have a film theory, Men In Black exists in every movie universe. It's just that in some universes they are better at covering it up than in other universes. I luv that franchise so much. I want them to make a fourth installment.

Watching movies has taught us that it isn't necessary to learn a foreign language. Just fake a foreign accent and anyone who speaks the language will be fooled into thinking that you're a native. That technique is especially common in movies with Russians and Germans. With the exception of "Inglorious Basterds," it has fooled them every time.

Arnold is a wonderful "presence" does great in physical roles but it's best if you don't let him speak much. I would say the same about Clint Eastwood. Few actors can pull off different accents, successfully. Meryl Steep and Daniel Day Lewis come to mind as two of the best.

Matthew McConaughey, in his defense, is from Texas. In the Director's Comments from the film Frailty, director Bill Paxton recruited native Texans for the lead roles: McConaughey, Powers Boothe, and himself. But in other films, only Paxton doesn't have a Texas accent. Another actor that could have been mentioned here is Cary Elwes. A good actor, notably from The Princess Bride and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, when he tried to be an American, such as in Liar, Liar, Twister, and Glory, he really fails.

I thought Connery's James Bond accent was a British accent. also Tommy Lee Jones attempted an Irish accent in one of his flicks, Blown Away, albeit not very convincingly. He even portrayed Gen MacArthur with a Texas accent, in "The Emperor."...so a tourist is traveling through texas, and says to a Texan, "your accent is very noticeable." the Texan replies, "what accent? your is the only accent i hear."

  • @Andrew_Franklin

Interesting topic but kind of inaccurate . Caine has pulled off American accents fairly convincingly for movies like The Cider House Rules (for which he won an Oscar) and Secondhand Lions, and Cage has done the American Southern accent in a few movies. 1-6 are pretty spot-on though.

I'm quite surprised you didn't say anything about Nicolas Cage's abysmal attempt at a Southern accent in ConAir. However, the title would then be about actors who SHOULDN'T try to do an accent.
