- This video will show you how to strip or tear down your Dyson v6 handheld vacuum cleaner. I show you how to remove all items correctly, which screws to undo, which clips to unclip and even cleaning the filters in the main motor head.
Dyson's handheld is relatively easy to service and repair if you know how to disassemble the vacuum cleaner this cordless v6 is a great back up cleaner but can sometimes fail.
This video will show you how to repair the Dyson v6, how to strip it down and fix.

Stripped down & cleaned as per video, impeller rotates freely but still pulsing ? Full battery charge & now working 😊 thankyou !
Watched several videos to fix my vacuum. This one is the best by far!
Hey thanks
Bro, was about to dump my Dyson when it was pulsing, came across your video, did just as you did stripped it down washed and assembled, now works just as new, cheers and thank you, saved a bundle and learnt something.
thank you my sweetie. from a 78 year old, hoover working a dream.
Thanks for a great tutorial, never tried to disassemble in fear of breaking it,easy to do and follow when you know how, cheers
Glad it helped
Hi I have a V6 that I’ve stripped down the Impella spins then stops after about a second, any idea what is wrong? Nothing is blocked
Amazing! Thank YOU!!! You saved me $350! PERFECT instructions!
Thanks Nat
Great video, made the stripdown and clean very easy. Many thanks.
Great video. Followed it and my Dyson now works. Did not have to pay to get it fixed. Well done
Thanks David - I’m glad it helped you.
These things are a piece of (well not so well designed ) spent the best part of today fixing Mr Dyson's short comings Thanks for the video mate Best regards Andrew
Thanks 🙏
Many thanks for the tutorial on stripping the V6, really appreciate your time and effort.
Thanks Adam - I’m glad it helped.
What a great in depth description. Thanks for posting it was a great help. 👍
Thanks Sheriff
You honestly just saved me buying a new hoover bud, great vid, thanks :)
Absolutely great video, im going to have a go fixing my mothers
Boom
Hey thanks so much! Was able to clean it fully and fix the problem!
Great glad it helped Dustin
Excellent tutorial, thank you. Your strip down is very well explained. Could you please help? On mine there's no power on the 2 terminals (main body) that take power to the brushes. I've cleaned them but zero volts. Thanks in advance
This just saved me breaking my Dyson in half. For the life of me, couldn’t work out how to get the cyclone part off the main body.
thank you so much!! I fixed it a tiny nylon thread all the way inside? Do you fix Miele built in coffee makers. I have a fault 74.
Thanks for understandable information
I love my Dyson, don’t get me wrong. But to be so expensive you’d think you wouldn’t have to do all this 🤷♀️ But great video
Thank you! Very helpful!
Really helpful, thanks
Perfect presentation! Thanks!
swap out the useless filter and do a hepa filter conversion
Extremely good thank you!
Very helpful, thank you 😀
Love your work mate. Video is excellently presented. Like the way you speed up irrelevant vision and clarify the complicated or unknown components. Your commentary on the tear down and reassembly is spot on. You're a champion! Cheers!!
Thanks Kiearan - I really do appreciate that I’m glad you like it.
Thank you, that was great.
Thanks Saf
Fantastic,
Are you a teacher you are good at explaining and demonstrating
Please keep it up

Thank you.
Thanks Trevor - Very kind, glad it helped.
I HATE my V6 and usually grab my CHEAP "broom styick" dustbuster with a head and now call it a vacuum over the Dyson D6. It's bulky and cant be maneuvered very easy(The unit itself not the swivel head (made of CHEAP plastics) --not good for your car, I can tell you that. The ONLY positive I can think of is it is reliable and still has the original battery.
It is so hard.
😊
Next time, I'm just throwing it out and getting a new one...
Don’t blame you
It took me about 30 minutes for the first time reviewing UA-cam videos. Now, I can disassemble the unit in 15 minutes.
Got down to the impeller which didn’t spin freely. I saw no blockage in or around the impeller. It will turn underpowered foe a few seconds but stops . Has the motor seized up ? Thanks for the video.
Hey Richard - Yeah I would say so, the motors are generally a bit stiff when turning but it should turn freely.
Perfect tutorial! The first, extremely helpful, non annoying narrated, youtube tutorial!!! Thank you very much Sir!
Thanks Tony - Really appreciated
What you did is a bit pointless.....most of the dust etc goes into the cyclone, so that also needs dismantling to clean.
Indeed ….hopeless only did half a job
I have taken apart my V6 completely. Cleaned everything ! Bought all new filters . Have tried 3 new batteries. Its still pulsing !!! There are no clogs anywhere. I have even tried resetting the battery like 3 times. Any advice ?
Great video. I have taken mine all the way down, gotten a new battery, and all I'm getting is a quick spin of the impeller when I pull the trigger. Sometimes 1/2 second. Sometimes less than. Any ideas?
It’s usually the battery that causes that issue, but you’ve installed a new one so not sure sorry.
Thank you. Basically cleaning didn’t work but your video helped me get it fixed.
So helpful, without all the gratuitous and useless commentary that usually makes youtube tutorials so intolerable! Thank you!
Excellent video. No irritating muzak. Good description of procedure.
Thanks Clive
There’s also a sort of flap valve inside the short tube on the dust bin. Mine had a big lump of rubbish stuck behind it!
Yes
Brilliant video thank you! I also unclipped the washable filter and the dirt in there was ridiculous.
Glad it helped!
Can strip down the cyclone further by removing T8 torx screws
Indeed
Thank you for the video our dyson v6 was pulsating I knew it wasn't the battery .So I stripped and cleaned as per your instructions fantastic fixed the problem 😊
Thank you very much for doing this video! It will be so helpful when I pull my Dyson down for major cleaning. I'm surprised that the threads got that far into the machine, as it has a pretty good filter system.
Cheers from Australia.
Thanks David - Hope it helps
you think so?? Ive been using mine for years in the DESERT and there is never anything in the filter--that makes me suspect it even works
Excellent video, thank you! Mine wasn’t switching on with trigger, so thought that might be the problem- I have been following you and stripping down as I watch, I’ve got to 4.12 removed the battery and when I push the grey button on the battery no light comes on, is this therefore my issue that the voltage isn’t getting to the motor and is there anything I can do please, thank you 😊
Thanks Emma - Yeah you should have voltage might be worth voltage (if you have a multimeter)
@@noseknows thank you,I think my OH has one I’ll give that a go
AHHHH, isn't it great to see youtube clip that is full of useful info!! Our 7 year old Dyson has been great but is slightly blocked somewhere, I'll be performing a strip down today to fix it. I feel confident now I've seen this video.
Cheers, John.
Great vid! I thought I had broken my V6 but this video saved me the cost of a replacement main body part! Thanks 😊
Excellent work sir. Dont think I could have done it without your video and commentary and useful tips. Was dreading trying to fix it but you saved the day. Have saved the video for future use thank you very much.
Thanks Raymond glad it helped
hey mate, this is brilliant; well done. Where can I get the sponge that is in the back of the main body motor? (two of them) I can't wash the two of them; they fell apart. I can't find any to buy.
Used vacuum one day ok and battery ok. Went to use the next day and flashing blue light. Family member used it for about 1 minute and it stopped working and put back on charge. No flashing light nothing. No red, no Amber no blue. Recently changed battery and has been working great. I got a new battery charger as thought that was problem but have tried and everything still dead. Should I just strip the vacuum down anyway to see if something is blocked? Hope you can come up with a solution like I may just need a new battery?
I strongly suggest to add focus on cleaning the fabric triangular/funnel shape filter. Dirt is collected inside that filter and if such dirt is not removed, then there is a high chance the unit will still be pulsing. Before considering washing the filter, the filter's lid/cover needs to be removed, then loosen the dirt inside of it with a brush, vacuum the inside, and only after that, it can be washed with running water on the outside of the filter. Never run water or compressed air inside that filter as any dirt residue will be pushed further in which will eventually caused the filter to clog,
Thanks for the video, very informative. I have just been asked to have a look at one, the red light of death. It flashes red even when it is removed from the body and charging doesn't seem to work as it has actually dropped rather than increased, would you say a dead battery? Is it worth stripping the battery to check for broken wires? Your help is much appreciated. Oh, is the motor, a stepping motor, as, when I check the rotaion, it only moves in increments.
Thanks very much for the demo , I managed to fix my problem that's to you . Thanks again 😊😊
I went through all of the steps and it is still stopping but if I hit the power button it will turn on again. I see the blades moving and its moving well but then it just stops. Any advice before I give up and buy a new one ?
Very informative video from some guy with excellent English
Just wanted to say thanks.
You gave me the courage to take it down and clean out the gunky black sponge that was making more of a mess than it ever cleaned.
Hiya, could you tell me where i could get the back filter from please? Ive tried ebay and the dyson website but i cant find it. When i was cleaning it, it just crumbled in my hands lol
Did the motor speen freely or you had to apply some pressure? My motor ha nothing blocking it but when i supply power with a dc source it pulses. Any suggestion?
Superb informative video . Without a manual, its impossible to know where the various plastic fixing lugs are and this video is brilliant .Many thanks.
Thanks Brian that means a lot. I’m glad it helped.
Thank you, thank you. Fantastic video. This vid fixed my vac. The rollers stopped on carpets. Stripped it, cleaned it all good now.
Thanks glad it helped
thanks for your tutorial. I wanna fix my dyson as i see the circuit board now. the black cotton was broken. where could i buy the black cotton? thanks
Great video, very helpful when I had a free V6 given to me I cleaned it throughout and now it's in my van with a DeWalt battery converter 👍👌
Great to hear!
Thanks. Very clear instructions and saved me a trip to the repair shop.
Brilliant, thank you, I was able to order a new battery and fit it myself, just waiting for new filter and rolling brush to arrive. Well chuffed, had my DC59 8 years and hopefully will keep going for another 8yrs.
Yeah these Dyson vacuums aren’t the cheapest best to try and keep them going.
Hi my dyson V7 is only a two years old when I put for a charge is charing but after one minute stop working help me please
Thank you for the great trainning! it is very helpfull! ✌💪✌💯
A really useful and easy tutorial without the usual unnecessary chatter, my dyson now as good as new after complete clean and service. Thanx.
Hey thanks
What about the filter at the back? It appears to have a black sponge type filter in it. I can see it through the vent holes. Can you remove the cover to clean it?
This video help me to fix my v6 thank you so much🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Thanks for sharing l stripped back my V6 and gave it a clean. I purchased a new battery which I now think it is faulty from Dyson for £65 so I will return as the battery will not charge… but great vid in turns of how to clean and upkeep the V6… 😊
Thanks - Glad it helped
Thank-you so much, an excellent tutorial, I followed & did everything you have shown.....now got the 'thing ' back together but STILL the brush won't rotate. :-( I shall never buy another Dyson I have spent more time cleaning it than vacuuming.
start from 6:04 or around there is what helped me. If you turned the motor one direction, try doing it in the other direction.
This is a great video didn’t realise how bad mine was. Never been so powerful! Thanks a lot
Hey Thanks Luke - I’m glad it helped
Just stripped and cleaned my V6 with the help of this vid. Thank you :)
Thanks Joe, I’m glad it helped.
The roller on my Dyson V6 does not spin (roller on other head does). can I repair this?
fantastic video, extremely helpful as mine wasn't working on max........subbed too
Thanks a million - glad it helped
Great instructions. But still not working. Put back into charger station and wait a while.
I can’t find anyone to help me repair my Dyson. The battery is charged, filter cleaned but still doesn’t work. A lot of money down the drain. Can anyone tell me where I could find help?
Watch the video
Thank you, as I also thought my V6 was broken, now its fixed and working great thanks to your brilliant video.
Thanks Colin, glad it helped.
Terrific video mate, thanks...Dyson was cutting out intermittently and driving me nuts....followed the steps in the vid...took it apart completely, cleaned everything and its working great again now...saved me £300!....I owe you a pint! :)....subscribed and will recommend to others. Cheers
Thanks Arthur - I’m really glad it helped
Hi, just wondering if you have any experience taking the V 11 apart? I need to replace the trigger mechanism on mine as the spring is not pushing down on the battery on switch. Thanks for any help you are able to offer.
Hi sorry no I haven’t done the v11.
Great tutorial! Our dyson was pulsing like crazy even after replacing all the filters. We wound up buying a newer model for the house and the "broken" one was tossed in my "to fix" box for eventual use as the garage handvac. I thought maybe dyson made these unserviceable because I couldnt figure out how to take it apart without breaking it but you walked me right through it all. Now I have a fully working dyson! Thanks!
Any video on red bin lever with spring replacement?
Your the man. Did all the normal strip clean and back together that I had done before multiple times before including popping rear cover of motor to check the coarse and fine filter sponges there. (Max fill line means max fill but some people do not get that!).
Checked my battery (it has been replaced with slightly bigger one after old one packed up) with voltmeter and it was good.
As soon as you triggered it you got flash code five on the power change button led.
I had forgot front access. Long nose pliers on the lock ring and a bit of jiggers pokery (half came undone a few times, then when half undone pulled lock ring back towards myself and eventually released about fourth attempt and front end off. Moved motor, it has some strong magnets in that baby, moved it it a max of a turn, tried it again and flash codes changed a bit and second operation of trigger it flew into life. Perhaps it has position sensor perhaps a bit stuck, it did not feel any looser after it started to run and stopped and checked but it runs. Thanks for pointer just done a full battery run with it and suction is as good as ever. They do clean well but need looking looking after, do not go past max.
Thanks Anthony - Really glad it helped.
what are those filters called between 7:50 and 8:00 minutes? are they foam filters? where can i purchase replacement for my v6?
Yeah they are just foam inserts, you could probably make some up if you can find some foam with the same structure
Fantastic just saved me money and grief. Keep up the good work. Peter
Any recommendations on what to replace the foam filters with? The ring one next to the main board didn’t survive a washing.
Hey David - If you have an old pair of over ear headphones - the foam from inside the ear muff pad can work quite well if it’s the right size.
Great video mate. This has helped me massively in servicing my V6. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Neil
Thanks for the video. Was having hell with the torx screws holding the vortex pieces together. But the two white clips were tbe key to my needs
Brilliant - Glad it helped.
Really good informative video. Thank you. I never knew that you could strip it down like that. Also good to know the battery can be replaced should it ever need a new one. I am just surprised the centre cone that holds the filter cannot be removed as a lot of dust collects in there and is very difficult to access/remove.
Yep I agree Raymond
It actually does have some particular screws and can be opened up BUT one must be very careful to keep track of everything and the gasket that’s sandwiched between the two upper tier pieces is delicate & likely should not be washed in the same manner but lightly wiped off.
Well thank you. This handheld is the worst damn thing to take apart. Everything was jammed on never to come apart again. White buttons, oh yes, they were not compliant at all. With full set of computer tools and jewellers screwdrivers, found the inside immaculate, impeller immaculate, circuit A1, no rubbish. But the blue filter casing was really all I had to clean. Workman decided the handheld was ideal for zooming up plaster, um no. These things are not designed for ladyfingers to take apart. Rather like the large Dyson.
Hi, I stripped my DC58 down because despite a brand new battery and it working for 10 minutes, it flashed a green light after a recharge and being on for 10 seconds. I was wondering if the impeller blade should spin freely as mine does not if I try to move it with a screwdriver. Its quite stiff. The main thing I cant find is why the green light flashes despite a full charge and working for 10 seconds.
Hi Peter, the impeller blade should not be tight as such, it does feel like a magnetic resistance when you try to turn it so there is resistance but not a lot. Not sure on the 10 seconds, is the head motor spinning ok? Was the battery a original Dyson and new ? Is the charger fully charging the battery ? To be honest it could be one or a multitude of things.
Someone on this site said that a flashing green light indicates a very low battery. Maybe Dyson chargers are now sensing whether the battery comes from their factory or not, as manufacturers are doing with laptop batteries and printer cartridges. There really should be a law. Where's the EU when you REALLY need it?
Thanks so much, I was amazed at how much gunk gets into the workings. My vac runs great now
Great Sisha glad it helped
Great video mate. I’ve done a breakdown before but never to that extent. Unfortunately I’ve got mine broken right down and still having trouble with mine shutting off after a few seconds of use with a yellow light flashing on the battery. The impeller seems stiff. Like you can turn it but it’s like it spring loaded and when you turn it, it springs into the next location if that makes any sense. Is this normal? Or is this the problem I have with mine. As I said before great video on instructions on the breakdown and reassemble. Any help will be much appreciated. 🤞🏼👍🏼
That’s exactly how the motor feels which is normal. Have you tried a replacement battery.
@@noseknows I have replaced the battery once before. This is the second battery. Is there a way of testing the battery?
@@noseknows I just put my multi meter on the battery and it has 22.2V
Very good video top man 👍👍👍eric Hart from the uk 🇬🇧
your video gave me the guts to try and move the seized motor, and reading it on a fix it website. I have a V6 max, changed the battery, the crown, washed the filter, nothing. You physically have to spin the motor, the inside of the grey thing, with the battery detached. I stuck a small screwdriver and spun it clockwise, no go, spun it counter clockwise and the thing worked even stronger than before. I read where the motor seizes so you have to move it manually to get it to work again.
Excellent
All working, many thanks
Good job, thanks! Now I know how to clean mine completely.
After recently replacing the battery I followed this tutorial and I am still only getting a single burst on MAX then it cuts off. Works fine when not on max. Any suggestions? Thank you.
