- BBC Midlands report on 'Inside Out' on Black Sabbaths last ever gig, which took place at the Genting Arena, Birmingham on Sat 4 Feb 2017. There is also reportage on the formation of the band in Aston, Birmingham 49 years previously.
Im sure others have noticed, but that “rare footage” was Paris 1970, and I know others like myself knew the second it came on the screen what it was. I’ve watched that footage numerous times since I was just under 9 years old.
Its been confirmed that the 1970 Paris footage is actually Brussels at theater 140.
2:58 "i was captured by the riff"
How a true sabbath fan explains himself.
Respect.
I thought I was a sabbath fan, lol yeah right! That dude is next level
Will never be the end until Bill plays with Sabbath one last time ! Anon x
So sad that he passed away
@@ayushdivecha WTF are you talking about?? The man is still alive!
1:32 Rare footage from Birmingham? Liars! That's 1970 Paris concert
majinoce- I know. Every Sabbath fan has seen that footage at least 10 times
What else would you expect from BBC !?
Actually no one is really sure whether its brussels or paris. On the paranoid super deluxe edition they say its brussels, on the dvd it says paris. Though the location looks more like the one from the brussels gig. Either way its not birmingham
It's Brussels.
majinoce omg was about to comment on that and say the same thing! Its Paris 1970 not rare at all. The first ever live video I ever saw of black sabbath before youtube or any of that shit was my old man came home from work with a vhs tape and was like "wanna see a real drummer?" because I was just getting into playing drums and teaching myself and he put the tape on and it was this Paris performance and the first song I saw was war pigs and it blew my mind and changed my approach to playing drums after I saw how Bill was playing. That was like in the late 90s and was the entire concert on that vhs 🤘This video and Zeppelins the song remains the same movie and moby dick solo made a major impact on my life when I was 1st teaching myself drums not to sound all corny lol. My ol'man showed me both of those back when I was a kid.
This is an extremely shoddy piece of journalism, I have to say.
They complain about the lack of tribute in Birmingham, but a good tribute by the BBC would have been an honest, accurate story:
(1) The "rare footage of Black Sabbath's first live performance in Birmingham" is, in fact, from the Live in Paris 1970 bootleg. It's not rare, it's not the band's first performance, and it's not in Birmingham.
(2) The term "heavy metal" in reference to music (or to sound, at least) was already in use, at least as far back as the 1968 Steppenwolf song, "Born to Be Wild." The first usage in print was a 1970 Rolling Stone review for the 1969 Humble Pie album, AS SAFE AS YESTERDAY IS. There's no known evidence that the term "heavy metal" originated with the release of Black Sabbath's debut album, and the BBC sure doesn't provide any in this feature piece.
!!!>(3) The drummer on this tour is NOT founding member Bill Ward!!! Though, he's alive and well, Bill fell out with the rest of the band over a money issue relating to this tour. If memory serves, Bill was to receive a smaller percentage of the tour's proceeds than the other three band members, and he didn't think it was right, and I don't blame him. Kind of an important piece of information to leave out in a chronicling of the band and its farewell tour. The band's drummer, talented as he is, is not related to the vast majority of the band's 48-year history.
Very well said sir!
Have you spoke to Bill?
My thought = too
100% everything you’ve said is absolutely true.
*No Ward-No Black Sabbath.*
The farewell tour, ironically, was the reunion tour... That's a great live Sabbath record! They were all in Top Form.
And Never Say Die is still Black Sabbath's last full length studio release.
Saw and met Black Sabbath after the show in 1971. I just walked into the waiting room next to the dressing room after the concert and I was the only person around besides them. Ozzy came out first from dressing room to look at posters of previous acts that had played the auditorium and got to speak with him about the show and music . Shortly thereafter the other band members came out and then proceded to the car awaiting them outside the venue. Went again to Ozzfest in 1999 but for me I will always be more impressed with 1971.
Rare footage that's the Paris show in 1970
7979man I was just thinking the very same
My first year at university, Black Sabbath put out their first album. My first year of independence allowed me to choose my style of music. Heavy metal isn’t thought of as a 66 yr old woman’s favorite. 👩🏻🦳 🦹🏼♀️
Gotta love Ozzy. He is so humble
It was a bitter sweet day when they took their last bows in Norway, love Sabbath with all my heart 🔥🔥🔥🤘🤘🤘
I cried🤷🏻♂️
I think it's just as important, though rarely mentioned anymore, that Tony went after that heavy guitar sound by endless tinkering. He didn't just pick up a stomp-box at the music store and get that sound. He took his guitar pickups apart and experimented with the wiring, at different times he filled the p/u cavity with wax or tin foil. He was looking for the loudest, most distorted sound he could get without feedback. When I first heard that guitar in 1970 I was hooked forever.
it started when he cut in fingers off in the factory. If that didn't happen. they don't have there sound
One more show with Bill ward on drums
I hate myself for not seeing them on the end tour 🙁
alphaswag95 I feel for you! I took the wife lol who hates rock music to their last gig in Sydney and all she could say is “lots of people here” lol of course I said it’s fucking Black Sabbath darling lol!
the very term HEAVY METAL was first used as a musical metaphor IN THE PHRASE " heavy metal thunder " taken from " born to be wild " a legendary song by steppenwolf back to 1968 ...
William S. Burroughs used the term in his piece "Uranian Willy" in 1965. even earlier .
@@mikekrause3671 was it refering to the sound of music ?
@@whytegroovin No, but it might be the earliest use of the term known. The Jazz Rock group -Soft Machine took their name from A Burroughs novel too . He has connections to music in certain ways.
I only ever got to see them once, in 1999. What a great show!!! The are the best....EVER!!!
kyokogodai I only ever got to see them once, in 2016. I would've gone in 1999 but I wasn't even 1 yet!
Well, thankfully you did get to see them. Was Bill Ward a part of that tour? I got to see the original line up, and that was a blessing.
kyokogodai nope- drummer was tommy clufetos
All I can say to the guys is what Ian Gillan said when Deep Purple called it a day - You have to stop when you're good, not when you're dying... Black Sabbath gave me so much pleasure since the late 60's, they will always be part of my life!
Black Sabbath is more important to metal the Zeppelin... there I said it!
I don't think anyone in Zeppelin would have a problem with that.
That was Eric Clapton in a very old interview who said that Cream played heavy metal, then Zeppelin started. What a buffoon! Neither band ever in their lives played a lick of metal. Sabbath invented heavy metal, period!
Amen to that
Ed9870 sabbath > zeppelin
Zeppelin isnt metal anyway.
I already miss it! Wanna see them again so bad
Saw this tour in Toronto, my favourite band!
Nice to see the shoutouts to Mob Rules in the video...Love that album! \m/
Please keeps singing guys as you guys are great
Until Bill Ward plays again, it won't be the end.
Thats only one side of the story..
Ridiculous agist comment. Ever heard of a drummer called Buddy Rich? Bet you haven't..He played well into old age and was one of the best ever.
Again, the accusations about Bill Wards health are just one side of the story. His explanation for pulling out is that he was offered an unsignable contract by Sabbaths management. True or not, that is his side of the story and should be respected. Age has nothing to do with anything as they're all the same age.
Not true. Have you seen Ozzy Osbourne live? He expends just as much energy as Bill Ward, who is sat down all the time. The age thing is a total fallacy..
Nigel Fortune Try drumming for ten minutes. It is very exhausting. Ozzy walks now and then. Singing is not comparable. The drummer gives the band drive and energy, that's why they have young guy. In metal it matters.
I went to the 3rd Feb show, the last but one:- One of the best bands ever.
This is the end,...my long-lost friend, the end. My only friend, the end...The Lizard King said it all in those lyrics. That final goodbye...shit, what a cool ride it was, though. I mean, like, I'm 61, they're around my brother's age. 65, 67...We all discovered it together.
masters of reality...best album by far
Volume 4
All unique albums.
Each have a different soul.
Love them all. Technical ecstasy, my least favourite...
no I thinks it black sabbath or paranoid
I will be forever remiss that I'll never get to see my favorite band perform live.
No Ward, no End
I saw them in concert live, lucky Me 👍😄
to jest zaiiiiiiiiiibiiiiiiiiszcieeeeeeeeee
@majinoce , yeah right !!! there are no black sabbath film footages before 1970 ...
If I’m not mistaken, that wasn’t rare footage of their very first gig in the Crown in Birmingham. I think that was Paris 1971.
Lady Sherlock Holmes Hi
The beginning ♥️😁
NOOOOO I never got to see them!
One off show please
If they do end up doing a one off show at some point it's most likely going to be at Download Festival.
Justin Jones
.
Marka23 screw Download it's gotta be BloodStock
I absolutely worship the first few Sabbath albums and 13 but when I saw them last year in Chicago, I understood why they were ending the band. They were incredibly underwhelming but at least they gave it their all for the fans.
it was a great show I thought
Black Sabbath really were the progenitors of the Heavy Metal genre despite the influence of other Hard Rock progenitors like Led Zeppelin, The Coven, Iron Butterfly and Deep Purple( I happen to be fans of these groups as well). Anyways, I doubt it is really the end without Bill Ward with them performing.
The roots og heavy metal goes back to link Wray and Jimi Hendrix Lau the foundation for heavy metal Aldo Peter green with green manalishi and cream the finest new wave og heavy metal was led Zeppelin Deep purple black sabbath and uriah heep in England in USA IT was blue cheer mountain vanilla fudge steepenwolf grand funk
Ozzy's eyes...🖤
The name Heavy Metal was pre-existed in the lyrics of the song (Born to Be Wild) 1968 by Steppenwolf.
I like smoke and lightnin'
Heavy metal thunder
Racing in the wind
And the feeling that I'm under
Apparently "Rare Footage" is Sabbath's one of the most iconic concerts ever in Paris. BBC should really see what they're using.
There's nothing left to invent anymore! I'm depressed. :-(
There will be another show because the final gig has to be with Bill Ward which is what I think Tony was getting at. I hope they don't drag it out like the stones did. The researchers did not do their work properly. Heavy Metal was coined in the Steppenwolf song born to be wild. It was rolling stone magazine that used the phrase to describe their sound. The first gig footage is not right. They were a blues band called Earth originally and the song Black Sabbath song was first played in Lichfield at a venue called The Pokey Hole according to Geezer.
Bill Ward will play with Sabbath again over Sharon Osbourne's dead body!
MarloFan Why is that ?
It's been pretty well documented - SO Hates Bill, and rumour has it that she was behind (or at least heavily involved with) drawing up the contracts for the final tour, presenting Bill with "an unsignable contact", amounting to him getting a lot less than the rest of the band. Sharon said she had nothing to do with it, which everyone kind of thinks is bullshit. Short version: she wanted more $$$ for ozzy at the expense of Bill (and she's got a bit of form in this area - ozzy's first two solo albums, she fired the drummer and bass player and had their parts re-recorded, as they wouldn't have as much say in the royalties). Do a bit of googling, the whole thing kicked off in about 2012...
wrong. it was 2002 when the albums were rerecorded.
Tony created the Doom sound🎸
While Black Sabbath has always been and always will be one of my top favorites of all time, i grew displeased over the years at the lack of diversity in their set list and always somehow failed to understand the reason behind the stale quality - i would have loved to have seen them play, like i believe many aficionados and hardcore fanaticos would have, material especially off SABOTAGE and NEVER SAY DIE as well as choice tracks from albums already used in their shows...i chose to support them simply because they were Black Sabbath...but lately i truly understood they were fully incapable of going after SNOWBLIND, JUNIOR'S EYES, ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING FROM SABOTAGE ...I said Good-bye to them a long time ago.
3 things have happened: Barnum & Bailey circus has folded its tents and reopened them in the White House, and Ol' Ozzy is actually returning to his own circus of shit now...LONG LIVE Five Finger Death Punch!! lol!!
It's quite simple - Ozzy isn't capable of singing those ridiculously high notes anymore, and hasn't for a long time. Hence nothing from Sabotage, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath etc.
Leave that FFDP rubbish at the curb where it belongs.
Sabbath Fans are the Best !!!!!
this fan said it all...!
Heavy Metal was first used in an article about the band Sir Lord Baltimore.
Play one show with Bill Ward behind the drums and stream it live !
Please do it for Bill atleast ;)
Their been my favorite band Since they started and i have the Black Sabbath Demon tattooed on my hand 👍
This was done before. It's called Spinal Tap, check it out!
"Mike Saunders, in an article about the 'Kingdom Come' album, by Sir Lord Baltimore, in the May 1971 edition of the magazine:
"This album is a far cry from the currently prevalent Grand Funk sludge, because Sir Lord Baltimore seems to have down pat most all the best heavy metal tricks in the book.""
For those who know all Sabbaths history heres a little talked about factiod ,after Sabbaths 1st US tour which i fell in love with the band, every music critic put Sabbath on blast & said the band had no musical ability & played guitars they werent good enough to even tune ,it took a musician who was highly respected in the Rock world, the Jazz world & the Orchestral music world to stand up for the band and tell Rolling Stone magazine that Tony Iommis guitar riffs were " perfect riffs " ,the industry pretty much couldnt dispute Frank Zappas high praises of the band being Zappa wrote music the London Symphony Orchestra couldnt play while his Rock band could ,Zappa spoke out again calling the riff to War Pigs a riff he himself was talented enough to have written ,then for free took the stage and announced " the greatest Rock band in the world to the audience i was in at the NYC Palladium ,the music industry at the time considered Orchestral studio musicians to be the best in the world so when Zappa wrote his first Modern Classical & Chamber music pieces at 15 years old the sheer complexity of Zappas works stood music critics worlds on their ear ,back then the only other Rock band to get Frank Zappas attention and admiration was Grand Funk Railroad who went on to be bigger than Led Zeppelin or the Beatles ,im sure FZ is looking down on Sabbath grinning his ass off at being right when he called Black Sabbath the best Rock band in the world, and he was right .
Rolling Stone magazine has never been more than spare butt wiping paper anyway.
Seen Black Sabbath ,head east, and the Ramones n 1978 . My very first concert and ended up n a car crash during a blizzard and our of no where a truck driver came and stopped and pick us up and took us about 30miles stopped at camp Verde and bought us a motel room and disapeared .we we're headed to Flagstaff AZ and that night it snowed 3ft that person probably saved r lives cuz we may have froze to death from hyperthermia ...
The best..ever! Just ask my kids.
That was not footage of their first ever gig. That was from Paris ( actually Belgium) 1970. BBC make up facts I've come to notice. Still, paying homage to Sabbath is always a good thing.
its sad that Bill Ward didn't do the last tour.
1:34 Was actually in PARIS....
I was at that gig & it was a pity it wasn't the original Sabbath that day
Anybody notice the dio sabbath riff at 2:30 they just play voodoo from the mob rules album wtf
Just mentioned that a minute ago my man...I'm a fan of the name and all 50+yrs..not just the classic lineup lol..love all the stuff thru the years...there's good stuff galore from 1980-1995..
@@steve-0493 oh yeah my favorite of the after dio stuff is the ian gillian album born again
I grew up with Black Sabbath in the early childhood days of my life. It's actually Black Sabbath with some sprinkles of Krokus and Deep Purple that made me want to learn music. When I got to my teens I started with my lifetime best friend Fred Brown and other friend Bruce Dickinson who together just started playing metal music with other friend Fred Fontaine in our first band ever created spurred on by Black Sabbath. Bruce Dickinson went on to create Iron Maiden and after that Queensrycke. . I went on to play live with John Cafferty and Beaver Brown,Soul Train and Emerson,Lake and Palmer and The Gregg Allmam with the Allmam Brothers Band,Bonnie Rait,Elton John,Michael Jackson and so many others that I've collaborate with music albums and projects.
Bruce Dickinson never created Iron Maiden, never mind Queensryche.
The footage isn't ftom their first gig in Birmingham. Paris.
5:32 Not true about "Heavy Metal".
"Heavy metal thunder" lyric from Born To Be Wild by Steppenwolf, 1968. This is how "Heavy Metal" first ever connected to heavy music. DIO explains it very well. Look up "Ronnie James Dio Explains Heavy Metal To An Old Lady".
Ps. I'm big fan of Black Sabbath :)
Raven Longman steppenwolf was talking about Harley Davidson motorcycles when they used that lyric or as the story goes 😎
No Led Zeppelin 1968
Heavy Metal name first use was on the periodic table on chemistry.
Alexis Rios :That has exactly what to do with music?
Really wish they would have been able to do it with Bill.. Especially since the drums were more prominent in their songs compared to most bands...
But who knows, maybe one day there will be 1 more final *final* show where all 4 perform together. One can dream, right? Lol
Arguably, one of the top five most influential bands of all time.
Nah. That would be Michael Jackson, Led Zeppelin, QUEEN, The BEATLES, and FREE.
The Godfathers of Heavy Metal!
ozzy was and is more sexy than the other guys in the band even now he still looks edge.
Exactly, Zeppelin were a Hard Rock band
It is never time
2:46 Film of Black Sabbath but acdc in the background
It’s actually Black Sabbath with Dio!!
Where;s Bill?
never ever ever let OzzY talk... just let Him SING
the term heavy metal didn't start with them it started with Steppenwolf- born to be wild... HEAVY METAL THUNDER
justin meneses: but they were talking about Harley Davidson
Not music
Yeah, but Sabbath invented the music not the word.
Heavy Metal born in an heavy metal factory 😄 cool 🤘
wheres bill
Hi
I'LL TAKE OZZY'S PLACE?
CHRIST ON THE RADIO!!!?
Butler said it's good they're all on top of their game in relation to it being the end. Well, what about poor old Bill Ward?
Wait wait wait😂
Rare footage from the crown pub in Birmingham? Footage from their first ever gig?? No it ain’t😂 that’s in Paris 1970.
It’s not rare either
WHERE'S BILL ????
Not true, it is Paris 1970
The Paris show is the most popular one lol
Black Sabbath live October 3rd 1970 Brussels Belgium 🇧🇪 Theater 140 Pop Shop not Paris that was not recorded December 20th 1970 which was used by bootleg labels to promote their product.
Ahhhhhhhhh! The end. Ahhhhhhhhh! Oh Lord, no!
THAT IS NOT THEM PLAYING IN 1968 ????....THERE IS NO VIDEO OF THEIR FIRST CONCERT....
Why would there be?
They could have had Bill do at least one song on the show
4:57 "Slackened the strings"??
But the term *Heavy Metal* actually came for the Steppenwolf song *"Born To Be Wild"*
term yes
music no
sabbath invented metal
Sorry but Warpigs was not thought of yet in 1968 Mr narrator do your homework!
These subtitles off the deep end, lmao dayum.
Sabbath is my favourite band but jerry garcia did it before tony iommi
Not The End. I bet Tony thinks not that question about me fingers again.
Heavy Metal is dead
long live Heavy Metal
Of course is not the last one
“This is a rare footage of the band’s first ever gig at the crown, 1968”
Hahahahaahhaha… this is in brussels, 1970….. damn!
Funny that they're all blah blah about the original four and the end tour etc...yet at 2:40 they ACKNOWLEDGE all the Era of the band(even without Ozzy)...by jamming out that WONDERFUL SONG SANG BY DIO...AND ITS FUCKING CALLED 'VOO-DOOOOOOOOOOO'🤟👍
"I think it's the end..... unless we can squeeze ANOTHER four hundred million pounds from another tour."
Na man..you're full of 💩💩. None of them needed the money... there's not a band on the planet that wouldn't tour if they could still draw a crowd after 40 odd years..
The end 2.0
whats with the fucking potato cam quallity?! its the fucking 2015+ yes iam pisssed
they did screw bill bill made a chose to not play this tour

No Bill no Sabbath. Period.
