Anybody who doesn't yet know, look up the Black Sabbath live show in Paris, 1970.
Bill Ward was an animal on the drums, and a HUGE part of Sabbath's success.
The man is way underrated. And like people have said, without Ward, it's not Sabbath.

The performance of War Pigs at this gig is one of my top ten best things musically of all time, Bill Wards drumming is just off the page, I'm a big Sabs fan from my childhood, and never really appreciated a lot of the drumming, but War Pigs Paris was a real eye opener, absolutely magical, makes me smile now just thinking about it!

I love the opening to War Pigs. One of my favourite Bill Ward parts is Rat Salad. Friends of mine went to see Black Sabbath the other day on The End but for me no Bill Ward, no Black Sabbath. I was lucky enough to see Black Sabbath in 2001 and 1998 with Bill Ward and absolutely fantastic especially 2001. I saw them in 2005 and for me too not the same. Bill Ward the last in that great era of versatile drummers who could swing like Bonham and Paice. A very underrated drummer and from this drummer's perspective irreplaceable. My friends were back stage and Sabbath were amazingly nice but such a shame no Bill Ward. Anyone who doubts his prowess get a copy of the Paris 1970 concert and wow he is fantastic.

Technical Ecstasy and Never Say Die have their great moments I suppose, but for the most part they're shit, however those First 6 Albums are probably some of the best Music of it's kind to come out in the last 50 years or so, and will live forever as must own classics.

It's funny. Everyone worships the ground Dio walked upon and believed what he said about drums being the most important instrument of metal, even though that may have had something to do with his history with guitarists. Those same people keep alive the "Lars Ulrich sucks" joke, apparently keeping up the belief that a poor drummer can make or break a band.
So how hard is it to believe that Bill Ward, the weakest of the original four members (well he's not Ozzy, a vegan or successfully battling cancer, and he's had a history of poor health), was not up to the challenge of touring?
You can keep your fantasy about sharon osbourne pulling everyone's strings and kicking Bill out over money, but here is a news flash for you: people need to make a living, even musicians. Being a musician is not cheap; a new band might need a disposable $10,000 in order to be able to tour, pay for recording time in a studio, generate merchandise, etc. A giant band like Metallica or Black Sabbath has a touring crew of hundreds, people who they have to pay, and they won't be accepting minimum wage. Bill may not be the healthiest member, but i think he's smart enough to say the right words and manipulate idiot metal-heads into believing his story.

Never got into Black Sabbath until my late 20's. But as a kid under 10 I remember being in an older cousins room and he was playing Black Sabbath and talking about them. He made it a POINT to make me listen to them. Things are so different these days with all the access to every little bit of information you want to find about your favorite bands and singers. But I can tell you back then (late 70's) that DARK.....MYSTERIOUS.......HEAVY....INTIMDATING......SERIOUS AS A HEART ATTACK vibe that I felt from just hearing the music....Ozzy's voice....and absorbing what little information I could gather from looking at a vinyl album cover was something I have not felt since that day. It would be nearly another 20 years before I really got into Ozzy & Black Sabbath in mid 90's. That vibe and energy was still kinda there from what I had remembered but very different. Now that ANOTHER 20 years has passed the music still stands but that dark VIBE of the original members is really totally gone. Ozzy is just an old fuddy-duddy.....Iommi is much more understood and likeable.....Bill Ward is a little complicated and kinda drama......and Geez is just....well Geez....connected to the cosmos. Thank GOD I had that one brief moment with Black Sabbath as a kid. It's the ONE thing I can use to verify that YES.....Ozzy used to be a scary guy. Everything about what I was hearing and whoever it was making them sounds with the guitars and drums was scary as hell. As a kid I didn't think of the music in terms of an actual person behind the music.....the sound was just it's own identity. I didn't know any of their names back then or what they even looked like....but what came out of those speakers and the look of the album cover was DIFFERENT and TERRIFYING compared to all the stuff I was listening to on the radio. I swear I'm starting to believe there is actually something that connects Black Sabbath to the End of Times. They were put here for that purpose. It's as if they're the countdown timer to our DOOM. They started it 49 years ago and now that they're finished it's like the timer just ran out like it did in Independence Day......"Time's Up." There is that brief moment between when the clock hits 00:00 and when the destruction actually begins..............HERE IT COMES.

Black Sabbath's "Master of Reality" was one of the most lyrically profound records in Metal history. It was also an accurate and excellent bit of theological poetry, especially the title track. The record company demanded that they become a "Satanic band." Tony responded by wearing a cross at every show. Odd. Why were they so insistent on Satanism? I have news for the world: Real satanists don't scream to a crowd about how great Satan is. They are inherently devious liars. They would never say what Venom or King Diamond says. Geezer's lyrics were intensely spiritual and anti-demonic.

Lester Bangs famously referred to Sabbath as something akin to Rock N Roll's first catholic band. I absolutely agree. Not to say that they were themselves Catholic. But you hear, like Bill referred to, the guilt, coming out in the music. I never took their darkness to be satanic but rather reflection of the darker aspects of the bible or growing up in a Christian dominated environment. Not to mention that the eponymous song itself sounded closer to catholic mass music than anything I had heard previously. I think Lester was absolutely correct.

    • @Treviscoe

I first heard Black Sabbath when my brother brought home the Paranoid album in late 1970, I was 8 years old. It scared the crap out of me, I'd never heard anything like it. I remember saying to myself 'I need to do THAT.' Black Sabbath changed my life, it really did. I already had a love for the drums with heroes like Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich but after hearing Bill Ward's work with Black Sabbath I embarked on a musical journey that I still love to this day with no regrets. Thank You, Bill, for sharing your thoughts, your music and inspiration.
    Deepest Regards,
    Alex G. 😎

Bill Ward must be on anyone's Top 5 drummers of all time in ANY genre. I don't think I can point to anyone who was more musical than Bill Ward. I totally boycotted Black Sabbath's final tour because of how they didn't offer Bill a better deal. That was cold and I also think that Tony Iommi has a tendency to default to playing the victim somewhat.

When asked about the inside of the first album cover with the inverted cross, quote; "None of us liked it". Unquote. It was probably suggested to be put their by someone outside of the band. Most likely suggested by some industry handler who wears a little hat.

By Tony Iommi's own admission he said 'to be honest' him and the others were interested with the Occult. He said in an interview they used to know the head Druid in England in some sort of organization. Ozzy also half joked in an other interview I saw that 'they got around and put stuff in cauldrons like witches, but it didn't do anything!'. I'm surprised Tony was that honest about that, because if you listen to the lyrics of songs like the inverted meanings in 'After Forever' (The Son of Sam, who was a Occultist by his own admission, put those lyrics at murder scenes, and Ozzy said the band went 'to far' with what they wrote. The Occult band Tool also had the same theme in lyrics to 'Opiate') and titles of albums like 'Master of Reality' has Occult meanings normal people would not think of without knowing a little about it. Bill Ward is a friend of my mother and I've actually met him. I would never ask him about that though. I have only asked about the band Type O Negative, cause he mentioned that band on That Metal Show, and he said his favorite Type O record is 'Life is Killing Me'. He also mentioned he loved Godsmack when I told him about their cover of Sweet Leaf and that he would check out that song.

Geezer told a story where Ozzy gave him an old grimoire book and he told Geezer to look it over and keep it by the bedside every night when he went to sleep. Geezer would eventually see a dark apparition appear before him while he was in bed. Freaked him out so much that he got rid of the grimoire book and told Ozzy about the experience. Then the song Iron Man was written because of this supernatural experience.

Bill beat the shit out the drums back in the day, It was a shame he could not tour with Sabbath, But to his credit they had to find a much younger drummer to play his part. Would be incredibly hard for someone who was not fit or has not played in a long time to pull it off, I think Bill knew he could not due his old work justice so he bowed out. One only has to watch old videos to see the energy and how savage he was in his youth to a drum set. Lars is able to beat the crap out of drums still because he never stopped

Early Sabbath actually has a very PRO-christian message. That being said, Ozzy's infamous, "The hell with this peace & love shit. Let's SCARE everybody!" is what set the tone for ALL Metal to come. The fact that people who hate Metal still think they're a "Satanic" band only adds to their mystique and legend. In that sense, the inverted cross in that first album was as much a happy accident as their bad review which spawned the derogatory label of "Heavy Metal".
Religion has been rightly framed as a cartoon or a comic book by Metal. Christians still don't seem to realize the Satanic imagery and subject matter is all a joke at their religion's expense. Religion is mythology. "The Devil", based on older mythic gods, is merely a Horror villain...a caricature.

But I can see why "my name is Lucifer -- please take my hand" or "Take your body to a corpse" coupled with that much power scared the bejeebus out of our parents. It would have been hard not to take literally when music and their world was changing so radically. They rarely had the same problem with Vincent Price for instance, because he wasn't backed by the soundtrack for Armageddon played not so much in decibels but on the Richter scale.

If you ever read the Bible, being the oldest book ever to be written, you would know the devil is not a myth, but a fallen angel, named "Morning Star", who was cast out of heaven by God, and who now roams the earth like a hungry lion, looking for those he can destroy.

The holy bible its just a book, but a really good book, one of the best ever made, with a deep message, the true prupose of the bible its be like a life guide for any person, which its not bad at all...and ok, don't match with actual times in many cases but still the same in many others. The characters are amazing, the devil, its not a caricature or a joke, the devil is one of the best and most pure characters in the history, who talks about the way how the people act, feel or think and its something still really REAL this days, you just want to make angry or disrespect the people who belive in God to found some power, its ok,maybe because they atack something you respect like metal, but Im sure Black Sabbath, specially Geezer, understands perfectly the figure of the devil, lucifer, the trickster...and uses to make great lyrics, that mystique you talk its not a pose, its something so deep, and its what make some metal lyrics so great....
Well if people don't want think like a simple apes (which its not bad,we are all apes, and the people can be happy anyways) but if someone want to know about the conscious part of the human beings I think its really interesting study the mental proces of the people alongside those 30.000 years....and that my friends inclounds religions too.And no offense, but if you want to disrespect the power of the emotions since "the devil its merely a horror villain, just a joke or a caricature" you are basically disrespecting any good art including Black Sabbath.Which is funny to me because it seems like a you are a "trully" metal fan...people often got mindfucked by nihilism, its ok :'D ,but nihilism its not just insult the christians man...Its more about belive in what you feel and not just copy paste.
