I review the Novation Impulse 61 in the video and record a quick music riff in Logic Pro on a Macbook Retina 15", using a preset Logic project template.
The Impulse series come in few variants, from a 25-key, 49-key, and 61-key model. Of all, I prefer using the 49-key model as it sits perfectly on a simple desk. The 61-key model is great if you're planning to use a lot of keys or to perform on stage.

Thanks Reuben! My impressions here. Just bought one. Two of the main functions for me is to control Kontakt virtual instruments and my UDO Super 6 desktop. But... Aftertouch is almost impossible to use. To hard and no resolution at all. When I use keystep 37 or POLYBRUTE's AT... well, that's what you expect from aftertouch. Maybe there's a way of calibrating it. If there isn't, I will definitely send it back. AT is a very important feature for me. If there isn't a way to calibrate it, they REALLY should correct this on next models or just remove the function for good. Felt fooled by Novation... it's a shame. If you don't need or don't care for AT, it's a pretty good controller indeed.
I've had mine for 1 year and I love it, but am only scratching the surface.

I use it with Mixcraft 8.1 DAW, and there is no mapping template for it, although I have used
MIDI learn for basic functions like the Transport buttons.
@Mick Barnes Audacity can hardly be considered a DAW.
Mixcraft 9 Pro Studio is the best and most intuitive DAW on the market.

I got 1, my old 1 was a 49 launchkey. Great midi.
This midi can do a lot more then what you show though.
(Ps works great on FL studio too)

thank you for this vid. I just commented on your launchkey 49 review, about the difference of this one and the launchkey 49. I'm a guitarist and used to record old skool style (last time I recorded was 1999 in a studio). However, school, then work threw me off (lets say about 17 years of a break) and now all of this new digital equipment is making me crazy. i just want to play/record guitars in a DAW, throw some basslines, some synth/keys/strings and the like, and some drum (e.g. ez drummer 2). I don't know if I made a mistake last year, but I bought an ableton push 2, which came with ableton live intro (I did a few research, but ended up with somehting that is way way more advance than my old boss dr-5). However, I bought now Logic Pro X, as it's way cheaper than ableton live suite, and I want to get a decent midi keyboard. I first thought the akai mpk 2 mini would suffice, but then went to alesis vi49, asturia, launchkey 49, and now the impulse 49... I'm still lost.
I wonder if the novation impulse is playable like akai mpk 61 or if it is equal or even better in that discipline?

I believe this is strictly a midi keyboard, meaning it doesn't have any sounds or effects running natively, rather accessing complementary computer software. Get Ableton live lite, often comes with midi controllers (new ones, that is) and has both of your mentioned features
How does this keyboard midi controller compare to the Arturia Keylab MKII 61, other than price?

how does the semi weighted action feel compared to launchkey 61 mk2 ?
i have launchkey 61 mk2 and i feel that the keys action and its velocity sensitive is not good enough for piano playing style

Hi Reuben, very informative video on the Impulse series. I've been narrowing it down to either the Impulse or the Novation SL mkii series of midi controllers. What would be the pros and cons between the Impulse and SL mkii series? What would you recommend?

I have a very basic question. Can this be connected to an amplifier for a stage performance or only with a computer for DAW control ?

There's no onboard sound module, so you can't plug it into an amplifier.
If you want to do that setup, connect it to a computer, and then from the computer to the amplifier.
how does it work with ableton? does it work well automatically or will i have to take the time to set it up?

Hey Reuben I have another question. Can you turn off aftertouch on this keyboard. I came up with nothing when searching before hitting you up.
Ive just got my brand new Impulse 61 .Ive installed automat 4 but when I open midi editor there are no controls their.Automap 4 has definitely installed so I don't know what the problem is .Its on an iMac.Any advice would be appreciated.
hopefully you figured this out already, Rob, but the Automap software is no longer supported in recent Mac OS versions and it is being deprecated. Good news though, there is a firmware update for the keyboard you can install; not sure what DAW you are using but I set mine up with Logic Pro last night without much trouble at all. Hey Reuben. How did you manage to set up automap in logic pro x? I bought the impulse 49. However, the tutorial/setup help of automap 4, is with other versions of logic.

Does it support windows OS? If yes, which software should I use to connect the keyboard. Please tell. I'm in a confusion whether to go for modi keyboard or a Korg arranger. If this keyboard doesn't support windows, then I'll go for arranger.

Hey Jeese, yes definitely it works with Windows. Just use any major DAWs like Cubase, Pro Tools or Ableton Live with it.

I'd go for the Launchkey MK2. Do you mean the Akai MPK249? Looks nice, but are you really gonna use all those fancy knobs and buttons? Doubt so.

Hi, can you explain why you would choose Launchkey MK2 instead of Impulse? I have the same problem as iDDxD and its time to choose one :D
Mike_ simple. I don't think the extra bells and whistles are needed. The keyboard bed is all I need to make good music. Unless you like a slightly better keyboard and will find yourself using the knobs and better drum pads a lot.

Have you tried Naktar lx49+ or 61? If so which one do you think has better feeling keys? I mean more solid feel.
Nektars feel a little stiffer to me. I prefer the Novations keyboards.

No bro... This is a midi controller... And midi controller don't have any inbuilt sound... So you need daw(digital audio workstation) in your computer or laptop to play this keyboard
