I really enjoyed your enthusiasm in this video for midi cc's and I can tell you enjoy the mapping. I share the same enthusiasm and would appreciate midi controller vendors keeping modern controllers with the option of editing and mapping like this directly from the device. Lessons from the past show us that if ongoing software support for midi mapping the device stops, it eventually turns your hardware into a limited brick of a piece of gear that used to be so much more flexible due to the never ending computer operating system updates where older software runs the risk of no longer being supported! Thanks for a great tutorial!
Its Cats like you that make this Journey such a blast! I'm trying to become a producer/facilitator as it were. I'm a 62 (who acts like I'm 25) vocalist, bassist/ guitarist, noodle on keys as well. My Novation Impulse 61, is being shipped as I'm watching your videos. Basically a hardware user myself; Yamaha Motif rack, Ipad 2 user . Really looking forward to get this controller. Wow, refreshing to see a hardware tutorial with such zeal. The Novation seems to be working okay. But I've encountered some confusing inconsistencies in relation to receiving the Novation CC messages within DAWs. Can you advise on difficulties with my DAW?

Thanks man. Got one on eBay and this was helpful. Pretty sure "MtY" stands for "momentary." It's an electronics term for that type of switch. The "moment" lasts as long as you hold the button ;)

Todd Smith Music Wow the zone section,I never knew my ib had so much power,tapping a key to hit start and end points so you can layer sounds as well,awesome.
I found out after all this time to change the cc numbers to ones unassigned and also some buttons in Cubase need different cc number actions for the presses to work properly on the Impulse.Some have T9L and others MTY but FINALLY got her working.

6:42. Mty is for momentary. When you press the button it will send the high number and when you release it it will send the low number.

I want to use my Impulse 25 for a live performance but I don't know how to create different MIDI channels (one for the keys, and other for the drumpads) to use different VST's

Anyone know how to calibrate pitch bend wheel? Honestly since I update firmware on my impulse pitch bend would change, sometimes on its own. I searched for old firmware but couldn't find it
Have you tried transmitting clock via MIDI OUT? Source being MIDI In, Internal or USB? I cant get Impulse to send clock data to any other device via MIDI OUT

How’s the keyboard ? I would like to use it as a midi controller for organ and clav sounds from my Nord Stage 3 ? Would you recommend it ?
If I use the Impulse as a master keyboard to control the tempo of a drum machine (Alesis SR or Boss DR880) -
Q1) How fast is the menu selection to move into the Impulse Tempo setting ?
Q2) Can the Tempo setting stays at the menu, so that tempo can be changed easily in between songs without pressing any menus.
Q3) Is there a knob / slider that can be assigned to control the tempo ?

Hi man. my keyboard is out of tune when I play. I believe it is a problem with the pitch weel. how do I disable or re-calibrate the pitch weel?
When I unplug it and put it back in tone. But in a few minutes he'll be out of tune again.
Great video, I have learned quite a lot watching it. One question I would like to ask concerning the 8 encoders (AUTOMAP not used), (I have assigned them to Filter and Envelope parameters) is it possible to program them in a way that will allow me to alter the filter frequency from it’s existing position instead of suddenly jumping to zero the moment I touch the encoder, the same goes for any parameter that is controlled by the rotary encoders, any help would be very much appreciated.

Hello. I am having a problem with this controller. He keeps playing notdas alone, pads 3 and 7 stopped working and play notes alone and the modulation button is doing the pitch function and also changes the pitch alone, making it practically impossible to use the keyboard. Does anyone have any idea how to solve?

I've never had this issue. Everything can be edited/changed within the synth so maybe the preset he is using has weird settings for the purpose he wants ?

Hmmm, I doubt it would be my choice with all the new options. Maybe if it was super cheap or a kick down that’s when you might want to consider it. Think it’s the 49.

How do I connect the novation impulse to the scarlet 2i2 and the speakers ? Help please
Hello sir, I recently purchased an m-audio code 49 but it's not syncing with my fl studio. I was informed that it's not the best controller compatible with fl. I have been looking into this work station here in the vid. Now the keys sync with the m-audio, but the drum pads, knobs, and the stop and play buttons do not sync. Any pointers?

Awesome how do you save a channel when you’re done? I’ll edit my mainstage channel (ch7) and then go to a gig and everything reverts back to what it was originally

I'd like to map an expression pedal to control a vst. However, when I move it while having the controls menu open it doesn't show, unlike the rest of the knobs in the novation. Ableton still recognised it's signal as coming from midi channel 3, instead of channel 1 like all the rest.

You are brilliant! Everyone bangs on about daw control but nothing about hardware control, they don’t even say much about it in their manuals. I’ve got a SL25 and it’s just too complicated with that little strip screen, this looks a breeze by comparison. If I wanted to use multiple volcas, can I program all their buttons onto different buttons into different presets?

Hi Todd! Another great tutorial! I wondered, the faders and knobs have page-knobs to quickly switch between different pages with different assignments. Is there a possibility to quickly switch pages with the drum pads too ?, so you can quickly access more than 8 pads with different assignments ?
I’m not sure if pads change with the bank for the knobs. I’ll check into that and get back at you

No, this can be done all internal , no software or PC needed.
Is the expression pedal input configurable? Would it accept, for example, a footswitch to send a Program Change message?
Can you tell me if there is a possibility to set up a sustain pedal setup and how. Specifically, substitute information 0-127 in 127-0, as with other midi keyboards? Because on Novation's page it says that it (impulse61) automatically recognizes, which is not the case. The other way is to buy a sustain pedal with polarity swich, I know. Tnx

Great information! Can you explain how to assign multiple functions to a single fader or knob? For instance, most soft synths have much more than 8 knobs. In automap, you can assign multiple pages within a template, each page containing the same 8 knobs but with different functions assigned as needed. Is there a way to do this without relying on Automap?

Todd Smith Music Hi! I was looking for an answer to the same question! I bought the impulse 61 assuming i could use the different pages/banks to send cc messages to my ipad but now im stuck with 20 templates in the impulse to control all parameters outside automap in the ipad. Pressing the mixer and plugin buttons without an automap connection doesnt change modes and a message in the screen tells to connect it to automap. Furthermore my impulse doesnt appear in the midi surface controllers list in live 8 and i cant use the mixer. Any help? Thanks...
Great stuff Todd! I was wondering if it is possible to change patches on Roland boutiques with the novation impulse. I have a jp-08 and a se-02 being controlled with the impulse
If the patch control has a CC control it should be possible
I need to get a few boutiques again my friend. Hard times made me sell a few pieces and I miss a few of them
@@toddsmithmusic3172 not so sure if it is possible. I'll just contact Roland customer support lol. I contacted them recently to find out how to power the se-02 on the go. I actually was able to power it with a power bank so now it's portable!

I only used this with hardware my friend. I never really looked for DAW, tutorials. I could give a quick look after work. Might get lucky. I hope you find the answer to your issue.

Keys isn't the strongest point. The fast knob mapping is by far the strong point

Hi there, I am trying to assign a button on my Impulse to change tracks in logic. So I can switch between my instruments when recording live. It’s proving to be extremely difficult. This video really helped me but it’s still not working exactly. I wanted to use my 2 of my drum pads as the button to select next track and select previous track. I followed this video and turned my pad to Midi CC as opposed to midi notes. And then went into logic and in the key commands assigned the pads to the track functions. But it’s sticky, glitchy. And basically unpredictable. Sometimes I press it and it doesn’t work at all, sometimes it skips 4 or 5 tracks. If I hold it for too long it goes through all my tracks. I want the pad to act like a button. So if I press it once, it doesn’t matter how hard or how soft, it changes to the next immediate track. How do I do this? I thought it would be so simple....
Have you tried adjusting the min/max setting for the pad you press?
I recently updated my Impulse's firmware..post which the pitch bender wheel is not working and nor is the 'hard press key' function.. you know, when I press the key hard on a certain preset, it gives a vibrato. Any idea why this is happening?
p.s. I use Logic prox(First edition)
Hmmm , no . I can look into a few settings and see if anything might effect that but nothing off the top of my head.
Hi todd - I love this video sice I just bought the Novation Impulse 49. I main use it with an iPad and an camera connectionkit - (charging the iPad - that way I dont need a powered usb-hub.)

Question can the pads be assigned to change programs (sounds) in a synth. Can I change the keyboards sounds banks via the pad on an iPad app - can't figure thet out my self - I am a noob I guess :)

This is a wonderful tutorial, many thanks. Can you explain how I might reverse the function of the sliders so they would work like Hammond drawbars i.e. the max cc value would be with the slider all the way at the bottom of it’s travel? Thank you in advance.
I treied to get the faders to work ,but they don't ,the midi KB has a great feel but Automap is useless.
When I select the Automap version of Air plugin's DB33,in Automap there are 4 pages assigned to the rotary controls but I don't know how to go from page to page on the hardware KB,worst thing I've bought,the actual keys have a great feel but everyhing else is useless,even the transport does not work in Reaper.

my pitch wheel has been posssed lately, .. has yours ever display the value on the LCD? I Tried unplugging it from the inside, that just made my pads do pitch bending randomly.. I think its junk

iDDxD i bought an impulse 49 (october 2017) after reading and viewing tons of sites and videos. Just like you i did not know. So many brands, built for "x" DAW, etc.. what i noticed after buying the impulse 49, i barely use the knobs, faders, pads on the controller, especially if you are new as me in recording music in this digital era (old skool head here). The most important is the keys (semi weight are great for me), velocity sensitive, pads (and how to map them, that's why I am here), sustain, midi input option, which software you get as "plus/gift" (not like other software i already have), and price.... all the rest is basically your DAW and VST/AU's (do not cheap out there)..i hope i helped you a bit. From a beginner (only to digital recording) to a beginner (maybe as well in digital recording).

I may have the same problem. Can't map the transport buttons to my deluge. Every key, fader or knob is mappable, but none of the transport buttons. Tried MC and CC, nothing works...have you found a solution???

Hey Todd. Thanks for the tutorial. I know the tutorial is a few years old, however I have a specific question regarding this controller and Ableton live. Maybe you have an idea?
I want the pads to function as on off switches for things I map in Ableton. For example the first pad hit once will turn off send one. Hitting once more turns the send back on. This is easily set up by changing the pad to cc and mapping within Ableton...
My issue is having the LED backlight of the pads also turn on and off with the device, acting as a visual indicator alongside. Basically right now it seems like Ableton or the controller is not recognizing that aspect. The actual mapping works but the LED assigned to the pad does not follow.
Do you have any idea how I could go about doing this? Via the keyboard manually with settings or within Ableton via routing or devices.. maybe I am overlooking something.
I don't use ableton often but can load it up later and maybe try to figure something out, you ever solve this issue ?
@@toddsmithmusic3172 I haven't yet. I figured I was being really picky and as long as I kept the lights in mind I could still use the pads to do what I wanted. If you ever figure it out man big ups. No worries either way the video you posted is already great!

Yes, I can try to work on a second tutorial.
It says ´Advanced tutorial´ that means you have to know about Midi control messages.
CC stands for Midi Control Change, and if you dont know about that, this video is not for you, and a sound example would probably not help you much.
When I want to use the faders for drawbars I can't,it seems everything onthis kb is setup for Ableton Live and nothing else,have I told you how much I hate this keyboard?
I use it with all my hardware and never had any issues . I’ve used it with countless ipad apps , no issues. So it works with a lot more than ableton
I think I have owned this KB for over 9 years and now finally understanding it,I'm a musician type,I'm hopeless with tech stuff especially midi keyboards ansd daws.
It wasn't this video that opened my mind about how to use this,it was Kenny Gioia's amazing Reaper tutorial videos,he has one on CC and he is the only person I can understand on techy stuff.

Just assigned the faders to the correct cc numbers for the drawbars in Air Plugins DB33 organ and nothing works,this midi keyboard is shit house.
The CC numbers are correct on the keyboard screen but when I move the faders,the drawbars do nothing and in the automap editor for the db 33 organ ,I can only move the first fader.
SO ANGRY with this keyboard,hopeless AUTOMAP SHIT.
Apparently Auto map DOES NOT WORK for certain plug ins,WHAT A WASTE OF TIME.

You are totally right with what you are saying but you must work on your presentation because you are making it really hard to understand . Write a script and follow it . Dont just off the cuff it because you go round in circles . I hope you see I`m just trying to be constructive .
