@@Megsquats I was just going to comment that these cleans look smooth as hell. I finally subscribed to Zack just now after following here from your "SOTTS PRESS" video: overdue - way to make things happen. I'm learning a lot from both of you and now I'm subscribed to both, thank you!
Watched what feels like hundreds of these videos but this one was one of the best. Zack did an amazing job of hitting the nuances, timing and demoing And the power lifter was an complete copy of what I always do when PC so it was a perfect for me. Thank you!
Kristen's strength is just so much bigger than her absent explosiveness. I had the same problem. More technique drills with no/low weight helps, and more conditioning ...
I love the contrast where Meg catches the bar in the front rack almost exactly where the bar stops in her pull, while Kristen is pulling the bar higher and having it crash down into the front rack. Gives a striking comparison between a common problem and the ideal catch.
I love this channel. As I lose weight, I want to learn these lifts. Don't have access right now to a trainer, so this is the best source I've seen. Will save this for a few months time when Im back to being more athletic size. I know cameraman said Kristen has huge lats but what about those quads? Girl looks like she could crush squats. Once she gets technique, her lower body strength will not be an issue by the looks of her
Some of the best/strongest Olympic lifters don't really fit the bill of "athletic size" Athleticism doesn't really have a look. Lean and athletic aren't mutually exclusive either. You can have one without the other. These are difficult and technical heavy lifts. Start as soon as possible so you can develop the mobility and drive those movement patterns into your brain and Central nervous system. You got this! Good luck!
For some reason, The clap the thigh then up drill is golden for me! thanks a lot! I got my clean so much more smooth doing these drills like 30 times per training session.
I am in no position to coach, just making an observation. It seemed like Kristen pull pulling the bar with her arms before she made contact at the hips
The top down front rack set up. Nice approach. Imma use that for our on ramp class. You've given me yet another very useful tool. Great content here, Zack.
Damn wish I’d been following ZT instead of using other tutorials 2 yrs ago. I got a nice incomplete fracture in my right wrist I just wrapped (kept lifting but ditched power cleans) and it hurts to this day. Perhaps...😬
Kirsten is so strong she wanted to muscle it all the way through. Looks like she was starting with her arms instead of glutes and hamstrings at the bottom position. Maybe is she didnt' pause at the bottom and just went straight down and up it would've helped with better co-ordination?
Like Zack said it is all technique/skill work for her. Once she manages to transfer all of her leg strength correctly she could be such a strong olympic weightlifter.
Some weightlifters do a narrow sumo clean pull as an accessory, but I don't think I've seen anyone do an actual sumo clean outside of fucking around. There is kind of the opposite, which is to clean with a snatch grip and slide the grip in to receive the bar. It has its pros and cons, mostly cons.
Hey Zach, I'm trying to implement some power cleans into my program. Loved the video by the way, very helpful. I'm having some trouble finding the ideal touch point. In the video, they start by finding their touch point standing straight up and making the bar collide with their thighs and pulling the bar up at a 90 degree angle. However, when you bend over to do it below the knees, that touch point isn't too easy as now you have to bring the bar towards your thighs and then move the bar at a 135 degree angle. I'm having trouble getting that touch point down when I start to bend over. Thanks in advance!
This move takes a while to master.. Actually I've never considered myself an expert at cleans even though I've done the movement thousands of times. I'm always trying to get that perfect rep. Getting your front rack position nailed down has to happen before anything. You should never feel like you're pulling the bar...it should be more like a jump with the bar and you flip the elbows up lightning fast to get under it. It's tough to resist the urge to pull, but the bar should get launched upward by body momentum.
Wow! Great to see these two very different girls go through the coaching. When you watch Meg‘s last clean in slo-mo, you can actually see that she could have easily power cleaned the 75kg with the height she had on the pull and only failed the lift because she was off balance when catching the weight in the squat.
Still don’t quite understand the mechanics. If I recall correctly, reading the power clean uses the legs to drive the weight up but not pulling with the arms. Secondly the barbell is suppose to have a floaty feel.Don’t quite understand why contact with the barbell to the thigh is necessary.when exactly are you pulling with the arms? I than power/hang clean 135lb and sometimes it feels weightless but adding more weight is feels like I’m not sure how to get that same ‘floaty’ feeling.
THANKS! I feel like I can aproach weightlifting now. Oh one more thing, can anyone give good advice on elbow injuries, like severe "tennis elbow"? I have a chronic decade long elbow injury caused by pulling myself up ropes for a living as an aborist in a physical rope ascension move called "hip thrusting".
It seems Kirsten rows her arms and goes on her toes to early. Vertical jumps might help her get the movement more but really good first day tho, niceee
My left biceps tendon is hurting when i am transitioning to front rack. Got any advice? Getting the hang of the technique and i power cleaned 50kg thanks to you!
1:35 its more than flexibility, limb length makes it much easier or harder. if your humerus is longer compared to your ulna and radius then its easier to get into that position. your elbow is farther away from your shoulder so your palm is closer to your shoulder.
I feel Kristens pain . I’m a ex power lifter and getting into weight lifting . I literally do the exact same thing she does. I’m struggling! Lol . But I have my mind set .
Zack how long does it take till the Hookgrip didn't hurt anymore and should I train it with load on the bar or without? The Hookgrip is my biggest problem so any help is welcome...
just hookgrip whenever u touch a barbell, except maybe deadlifts. On an untrained thump the load shouldnt be to high, but get the volume in. When ur thump hurts not only during but aswell afterwards ur maybe doing to much for the moment and still need to get used to it.
Wrap your thumb along the bar rather than around it. That way the bar will press against the meaty part of your thumb and it will hurt less. When you get used to it, it won't hurt at all anymore. Omar Isuf has a good video on this, that's where I learned it
So I'm actually learning this movement right now just for general conditioning. Only problem is I got somewhat decent using 40 kg but since I only have limited amount of plates the next increment is 60 kg and that's too big of a jump. Should I just keep training with 40 until I master it even more or should I try the 60 until I make it?
He's recording the weight as including the bar?? (2x15kg he put on screen as 45kg, 15kg from the bar). I'm always unsure on this, do you count the weight of the bar or not?
How much does the bar that they used in the video weighs?, i got a 45lbs bar and i dont think its the proper weight to learn the techniques with, that or im just weak
i think meg is not a complete beginner to the sport, and i think when you teach them pull elbows that high would that create a wrong idea of how clean is? cuz in clean you never pull elbows that high. and kristen is apparently struggling with power position, shouldn't it be great to teach her where is the power position?
You DO NOT stack your wrist like that overhead. I am so surprised to see Zack say this. Wrist should be in a support position. This actually will appear slighty bent. The bar will then be stacked over the elbow. This is the same as the bench.
@Zack Telander I missed you saying it was specific to that. I love your videos have been watching for over 2 years. I wasn’t trying to put you down at all was just surprised because you generally have great teaching. This exact instruction is just one that I see recurring from CrossFit gyms and always bothers me. Cheers Zack.
