This. I would go a step further and say that if you love Happy Gilmore there's a good chance that you hate Jack & Jill and that you don't even have to consider yourself a Sandler fan to think one was a pretty good movie and the other was not.
Vinicius De Moraes He doesn't need the Oscars, why should he care what a bunch of boring old people think of him. As long as he keeps making films, then that's great for him!
Williams was an absolute titan of cinema. He perfected the comedy formula with his inimitable style and proved to the world he could be just as incredible in a drama, whether he's the good guy or bad. There will never be another like him. I'm just happy that he left us with a lifetime of greatness, we can appreciate forever.
Watchmojo always talks about Adam Sandler's performance in Punch Drunk Love, but they don't even mention his incredible performance in Reign Over Me. For shame.
Yes!!! That role was the one that shocked me big time. I haven't seen Punch drunk love but his performance in reign over me was really one of the most impressive and emotional I've seen
It's no surprise that comedic actors make for great dramatic actors. Making people laugh on a consistent basis is one of the hardest things an actor can do, so if you can do that, there shouldn't be anything you can't do as an actor.
Honestly such a great choice for #1, it's still sad to know Robin Williams is gone, but he was both a genius in comedy and could turn in more serious roles like in Good Will Hunting and Dead Poet's Society.
Annie Burke Can't forget his more villainous roles in movies such as "One Hour Photo" and "Insomnia." He did those roles very well, and I was absolutely shocked that Robin Williams could do that so well.
"Who knew Eddie Murphy had such pipes?" Really, am I the only one who remembers him soulfully singing about how his girl likes to party all the time, party all the time, party all the time? Lol
Will Smith: Pursuit of Happiness Jim Carey: The Number 23 Adam Sandler: Reign Over Me Ben Stiller: Secret Life of Walter Mitty All amazing movies as well
Hotel Transylvania is good for me!At least he was able to portray a character that wasn't a man-child,but instead an overprotective father, and that's my type of male character!
Male why do you idiots like eternal Sunshine of the spotless mind so much you guys like kiss the movies ass so much it's an Stupid useless overrated piece of s***
Fantastic list, no argument at all. And good job of adding Stranger Than Fiction in honourable mentions; I feel like most people have forgotten about that film.
buciallstar OOOOOOOH MAN. I didn't even think of that and THAT was incredible when you think it was her first dramatic role and first FILM! Thanks for reminding me.
Brynjar Reynisson Ghost isn't necessarily a Comedy on it's own, but Whoopi Goldberg was still playing the comic relief still making it a comedic performance.
bibleanddisneyfan Will Smith did Ali in 2001 and he did Enemy of the State in the 90s so he had already established himself as more than a comedic actor before the Pursuit of Happyness
I think Good Will Hunting is, but I think what they were going for was the first notable performance where Williams was in a drama. Also if you look at their list for his top 10 performances Good Will Hunting is number 1.
***** Good Will Hunting was definitely a better performance. Way more range of emotions as well as an infinitely deeper/complex character; done perfectly by him.
Anyone notice when a comedic actor takes a dramatic role, it's their best role yet, and the when dramatic actors do comedy they are hilarious. Explain this.
StudioInkblot I'd say it's equally difficult to be exceptional in a drama as in a comedy. Hence why a lot of comedians that try drama fall flat and vice-versa.
okay but like eternal sunshine was such a strong role for Jim like he turned in a much stronger performance there, idc if that wasnt the one that "put him on the map" as a serious actor.
Secret Life of Walter Mitty is just a fantastic film. Taking away from Ben Stillers performance, the film offers everything that a great film should offer. ADD in Ben Stillers performance as an everyman who takes hold of his chance at an adventure to find himself on the road of discovery, in order to find a business associate who is lost in the north photographing wildlife, and is LIVING the dream of freedom, was nothing short of BRILLIANCE.
I honestly believe Robin Williams might be the greatest actor of all time. He was obviously amazing in comedies, but no comedian could do a serious role like he did. He also did creepy really well, like in One Hour Photo and Insomnia. Also, after seeing Good Will Hunting, he changed my goddamn life
When I first got around to watching King Kong and being introduced to Jack Black in a dramatic role, my family and I had been talking about he was always known to be a funny man, which he is, but then another Watchmojo video led me to the idea that he was entirely miscast as Carl Denham, which maybe everyone`s concern. Although, he SEEMED miscast, he still put on a seriously good performance, nonetherless.
1. Robin Williams “The Fisher King” 2. Jim Carrey “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” 3. Bill Murray “Lost in Translation” 4. Peter Sellers “Being There” 5. Adam Sandler “Punch-Drunk Love” 6. Jerry Lewis “The King of Comedy” 7. Steve Carell “Foxcatcher” 8. Whoopi Goldberg “The Color Purple” 9. Jonah Hill “The Wolf of Wall Street” 10. Mo’Nique “Precious”
Nana Amuah I know I've seen it, its just majority of people knew him predominately as a comedic actor, so you would think he would be on the list, plus that was a very small role in comparison to Breaking Bad.
ROFLCOPTER195 This is a list of actors who started their career as comedy movie/TV actor. Bryan Cranston does not fall under that category. Plus he only starred in few comedy TV shows and that's about it.

What i hope ends up being on the list: "Good Will Hunting" - Robin Williams "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" - Jim Carrey "Punch Drunk Love" Adam Sandler "Stranger Than Fiction" - Will Ferrel
Precious had me in tears! I was shocked and horrified, but impressed and awed by the performances of both women! Monique has some serious acting chops!
I'm so so glad Will Ferrell got a mention for Stranger than Fiction. It's a very underrated movie and he perfectly fit the part. Unlike some comedic actors who venture into drama, you never see him as just a funny person while he plays the character. He was able to play an introverted and painfully ordinary everyman in the most believable way which he never comes across as in most of his comedic roles. Here's hoping to see more dramatic performances from him, although sadly there have been very few.
Nonono. There's only one kind of person in this world. People who love old Adam Sandler movies and hate new Adam Sandler movies. If you're not in this group, you don't actually exist. I'm sorry you had to find out like this.
***** Adam Sandler himself is of no import. You either love his great older flicks and hate his shitty newer ones, or you're not real. No two ways about it.
Mo'nique in Precious, her role was fucking amazing. the role made me so fucking angry at her, I hated Mo'nique (not her, but her role as the mom) so much. the movie made me cry so bad. she did an amazing job. (she also looks like my mommy :3 )
I didn't see Adam Sandler in Punch Drunk Love and I usually don't care for his comedies, but I actually really liked him in Spanglish. It was a comedy yes, but Sandler plays a dramatic role in it. I was really taken by surprise by his performance.
Carey's Truman Show performance always stands out for me when it comes to comedians and top dramatic roles. The scene on the boat when he was almost being drowned was just WOW!!!
Adam Sandler's performance in Punch-drunk love was one of the most haunting, uncomfortable to watch and most of all, Real performances that is still one of the most underrated performances of all time. He should have been no lower than number 1 on this list.
The Truman show is such a quintessential Carrey performance. Should have been spotless mind in that spot. Also, Sandler in Punch drunk love should have at least taken the 2nd spot with his performance having so many overlooked aspects that he doesn't get enough credit for such as it being one of the most realistic portrayals of social anxiety and OCD ever shown on film. One of the greatest performances of this generation.
Comedy actors often make the most layered and complex characters in drama. Btw, Eddie Murphy's role in "Life" (1999) definitely deserved a mention here, it's such a serious subject masterfully disguised as comedy, a film that is criminally underrated.
I agree with Robin Williams but I thought he was best in Patch Adams. Yes it was very funny but I think it covered some great drama too. He was an amazing actor. He will be missed.
jonah hill in moneyball was overrated. he should have been an honorable mention swapped with will farrel in stranger than fiction. eddie murphy was superb in dreamgirls. him not winning the oscar was the academy giving him the finger.
beefyoso I always get pissed when people act like it was Eddie Murphy's fault for getting snubbed. Yeah, he made "Norbit", but that somehow invalidates his performance in Dreamgirls? Sandra Bullock accepted her Razzie for "All About Steve" the day before she won an Oscar for "The Blind Side"! It's bull.
beefyoso Dreamgirls was a terrible movie, Murphy was good in it but still... plus he lost to Alan Arkin, so there's no shame in that. I love Farrell in Stranger than Fiction, question is it really a dramatic role... it's somewhere halfway between comedy and drama (heck, the movie even tackles that). Will Forte in Nebraska and Jerry Lewis in the Kind of Comedy also delivered better performances than half of those on the list imo.
First cut's the deepest for me, plus, I haven't seen most of these. When I saw Mary Tyler Moore in "Ordinary People", (the first of all of these movies I had ever seen), I was shocked by her absolutely brutal performance in that movie. It was like a completely different actress from the one I knew. No indication whatsoever that she even knew what "comedy" meant. Not a single smile-evoking line emerged from her lips or her body language in that movie. absolutely brilliant.
Time for another top 10 dramatic performances by comedic actors suggestions: - Marlon Wayans in Requiem for A Dream - Tyler Perry in Gone Girl - Jennifer Anniston in Cake - Owen Wilson in Midnight in Paris or Wonder - Seth Rogan in Steve Jobs - James Franco (is he considered comedic idk?) in 127 Hours - Ben Stiller in the Meyerowitz Stories - Sacha Baren Cohen in Les Miserable or Sweeney Todd - Vince Vaughn in Brawl in Cell Block 99 - Melissa McCarthy in the Nines - Whoopi Goldberg in the Color Purple - Kristen Wiig in the Martian - Chris Tucker in Silver Linings Playbook
Off-topic but related: I would give Peter Weir some credit here. He directed Jim Carry in ‘The Truman Show’, Robin Williams in ‘Dead Poet’s Society’ and, while not a comedic actor, also helped Harrison Ford expand beyond action roles with ‘Witness’. It seems Weir has a talent for spotting certain actor’s potential range. 😊
At last!!! I almost scrolled down the whole comments section to discover a reference to Jack Lemmon!I was about to think I hadn't noticed a small print, something like "of the past 20 years" in the clip description.Thank you Marco! Please check out his marvellous performance in "Missing"

I miss Robin Williams. Grew up watching his movies. Just cant seem to wrap my head around the fact he is no more :, '(. R.I.P i hope he has found his happiness up there....
I think I speak for all Sandler fans when I say that you can love Happy Gilmore and hate Jack & Jill
So true
yuuup
Yep
True
This. I would go a step further and say that if you love Happy Gilmore there's a good chance that you hate Jack & Jill and that you don't even have to consider yourself a Sandler fan to think one was a pretty good movie and the other was not.
Jim Carrey has the most range imo.. just his dramatic roles are so poles apart and amazing.. never saw an actor break typecasting like that
I think Robin Williams had an even better range. The Guy's a monster.
Comics generally have a better range in my opinion but unless they achieve superstar status they rarely get cast in dramatic roles.
KDSVSRK i got them equal cuz I love them both
Jim Carrey, Adam Sandler and Robin Williams are my personal top 3
Jim Carrey is actually a really good actor, it's a shame he doesn't do more dramas.
UnkeptMoss328 Indeed. And he deserved at least a oscar nom for both eternal sunshine and truman show.
Vinicius De Moraes He doesn't need the Oscars, why should he care what a bunch of boring old people think of him. As long as he keeps making films, then that's great for him!
UnkeptMoss328 Have you seen the Number 23? One of the worst movies of all time.
pjfan1210 is not worse than max payne... and for me, its was a good movie with a good story
Oh and then there was The Majestic. Forgot about that stinker.
Adam Sandler nails every serious role he's in, Uncut Gems was definitely my favorite 👌
Reign over me as well
I love all his dramatic roles he knocked them all out of the park
@@you12praise85 I love that 1 the most it's hard to hold back tears on that one 😊
Reign over me is a very good movie, watched it just the other day, when the lawyer puts the photos n front of him n the court room, great scene
The day Robin Williams passed away was the day the world became much darker.
@Mrq Yaskn
what is your favorite funny movie?
@Mrq Yaskn
Idiocracy was awesome!
very relevant to our society.
how about, Spy Hard, Loaded Weapon and Top Secret.😁
“Robin Williams has a manic gift that gladdens a sad world!”

It is disappointing
VlogUntilDawn that was good, so was Spanglish. I love Spanglish
VlogUntilDawn I agree! That's a very underrated movie :(
I would have Reign Over Me for this video too. For sone reason, it gets ignored
no marlon wayans requiem for a dream
Mark Trajkovski shut up mark
Mark Trajkovski OMG... Yes!!!!!
Movie sucked
Mark Trajkovski yesss that movie was so good and unsettling at the same time
Damon Wayans' performance in Requiem for a Dream is probably one of my favorite performances of this century so far.
It's no surprise that comedic actors make for great dramatic actors. Making people laugh on a consistent basis is one of the hardest things an actor can do, so if you can do that, there shouldn't be anything you can't do as an actor.
"Whether you are a Happy Gilmore fan or a Jack and Jill hater..."

Yes
Honestly such a great choice for #1, it's still sad to know Robin Williams is gone, but he was both a genius in comedy and could turn in more serious roles like in Good Will Hunting and Dead Poet's Society.
Annie Burke Have you ever seen What Dreams May Come?
macktrucQ She wanted to do have sex with him too
Annie Burke Can't forget his more villainous roles in movies such as "One Hour Photo" and "Insomnia." He did those roles very well, and I was absolutely shocked that Robin Williams could do that so well.
+Annie Burke If you haven't seen The Fisher King I highly recommend it
+Nathan Swanson You know he was considered for Jack Torrace in The Shining
"Who knew Eddie Murphy had such pipes?" Really, am I the only one who remembers him soulfully singing about how his girl likes to party all the time, party all the time, party all the time? Lol
Will Smith: Pursuit of Happiness
Jim Carey: The Number 23
Adam Sandler: Reign Over Me
Ben Stiller: Secret Life of Walter Mitty
All amazing movies as well
And Jack Black in King Kong.
Adam Sandler: Uncut Gems
Imo 7 pounds with Will Smith is better than Pursuit of happiness
Adam sander was amazing in Reign Over Me
The Danny Black VLOG He was so amazing, and so real,
He gave me depression.
Brillant and the one with Dustin Hoffman and Ben stiller 'the meyerowitz stories' he is brilliant in that
where is danny black THANK U!
Oh my God yes. I almost forgot about that movie. I cried so damn much during that movie. He was excellent
Hotel Transylvania is good for me!At least he was able to portray a character that wasn't a man-child,but instead an overprotective father, and that's my type of male character!
WHERE IS MARLON WAYANS FOR "REQUIUM FOR A DREAM? EMPTY LIST WITH THE OMITION.
I know right?!!!
Excluding his performance from this list is a crime punishable by death.
I would say Jim Carrey as #1, but for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. His performance in that movie almost made me cry.
Dead poets society made me cry more
I don't know where or how they got their prescriptions, but they did mange to keep well supplied
Male why do you idiots like eternal Sunshine of the spotless mind so much you guys like kiss the movies ass so much it's an
Stupid useless overrated piece of s***
Bo Warner Man his portrayal DID have me in tears
Adam Sandler's performance in reign over me was way better than punch drunk love.
You really think so
Thank you.
Not even close
I was gonna mention spainglish but thats still comedy isn't it?
***** If it was supposed to be comedy, I wasn't laughing.
Sandler topped everything here with Uncut Gems. Can’t even tell it’s the same man who did Billy Maddison and Happy Gilmore
Oh god robin! Why!!!!
R.I.P
Sam Malkie have you subscribed to Jamie Costa yet?
Marlon Wayans.... Requiem for a Dream? Why not?
DamonDeLarge damn I literally just posted that.
Fantastic list, no argument at all. And good job of adding Stranger Than Fiction in honourable mentions; I feel like most people have forgotten about that film.
Jim Carrey was so much better in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind
+Jay Cartwright
Totally agree. That movie is heartbreaking.
I would've put him on the list, but not for The Truman Show or Eternal Sunshine...I'd have chosen The Majestic.
O no
Tbh I never knew that was Jim Carrey in the movie until now.
What about the Majestic?
WHERE IS JAMES FRANCO IN 127 HOURS!!!
not known for enough comedies. however great movie
Alex Flannigan I was gonna say he isn’t funny so...
No Marlon Wayans in Requiem for a Dream?
That performance was in another WM list
No love for Whoopi for the Color Purple. As usual.
She was in ghost that is not a comedy now is it?
buciallstar OOOOOOOH MAN.
Tommy Marz ok
freegratuits She was unbelievably good in "The Color Purple".
Pretty good list, but I think Whoopi Goldberg for the Color Purple and Will Smith for the Pursuit of Happyness really should have been here.
bibleanddisneyfan Will Smith did Ali in 2001 and he did Enemy of the State in the 90s so he had already established himself as more than a comedic actor before the Pursuit of Happyness
bibleanddisneyfan Great performance by Smith but he's done his share of dramas but no Whoopi? Yeah they messed that up.
AJThrash1 whoopi has done dramas such as corrina, corrina
bibleanddisneyfan Apart from sister act a lot of her movies were dramatic roles so maybe thats why they didn't include her!
That scene at the train station bathroom gets me everytime.. so sad
Is good will hunting not robin Williams best performance ?
Personally I think Dead Poets is better
***** I prefer Good Will Hunting.
Charlie Prior-Mills soz ard
I think Good Will Hunting is, but I think what they were going for was the first notable performance where Williams was in a drama. Also if you look at their list for his top 10 performances Good Will Hunting is number 1.

Dabbled in comedy? Back in the 1980s, Tom Hanks was known exclusively as a comedic actor.
Tom Hanks' scream when he gets shocked by the doorbell in The Money Pit is the best thing ever.

Do top 10 comedic performances from dramatic actors
God, Steve Carell was amazing in Foxcatcher...
one of my fav performances ever.
He was great in Little Miss Sunshine. So was Alan Arkin. And Paul Dano. And Toni Collette and Greg Kinear
@@brandiesel5187 Too bad he didn't win a Oscar, though. :(
Love Jim Carrey in Truman Show, but I would’ve given the spot to I Love You Phillip Morris. His performance in that film was next level
Whoopi Goldberg in the Color Purple
Ashton Kutcher in The Butterfly Effect!!!!
1borderbandit7 HE KILLED THAT SHIT
1borderbandit7 great choice
@Zayne simard moore Or.........Jobs? Even though, he was seemingly terrible.
Great movie, but he's not enough of a comedian, he has more of a balance between serious roles and comedies so it doesnt count
No arguments over #1
okay but like eternal sunshine was such a strong role for Jim like he turned in a much stronger performance there, idc if that wasnt the one that "put him on the map" as a serious actor.
I think Jim Carrey in "The Number 23" is a way more dramatic performance
Ben Stiller in Secret Life of Walter Mitty?
Ah. Really?
awful
@@boutsee really? Why? I liked that movie a lot
Secret Life of Walter Mitty is just a fantastic film. Taking away from Ben Stillers performance, the film offers everything that a great film should offer. Jack Black in King Kong
Black Jack in Kong King
Black Jack in Hong Kong
King of Blacks playing Black Jack drinking Konga.

You picked Dead Poet Society over Good Will Hunting? WTF?
Not that big of a deal man
Yes it's awesome
Let's not forget patch adams
I don't know which came first but similar to Jim Carrey, which ever film came first is the one that should be the one on the list.
Dps came first.
1. Robin Williams “The Fisher King”
2. Jim Carrey “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind”
3. Bill Murray “Lost in Translation”
4. Peter Sellers “Being There”
5. Adam Sandler “Punch-Drunk Love”
6. Jerry Lewis “The King of Comedy”
7. Steve Carell “Foxcatcher”
8. Whoopi Goldberg “The Color Purple”
9. Jonah Hill “The Wolf of Wall Street”
10. Mo’Nique “Precious”
Actually, The Wolf of Wall Street is considered as a comedic biography.
Bryan Cranston? Walter White?
Right? How could they miss that one?
ROFLCOPTER195 He did dramatic stuff before Malcolm. Vince Gilligan cast him because of that X-Files episode he was in. Watch it, it's a good one.

"Punch Drunk Love" Adam Sandler
"Stranger Than Fiction" - Will Ferrel

PvtGermanWagz IMO Jim Carrey's best performance was in "Man on the Moon".
guvkon That was another good one.
Precious had me in tears! I was shocked and horrified, but impressed and awed by the performances of both women! Monique has some serious acting chops!
Big respect for number 1.
He was a very talented man & shall be missed.
RIP Robin Williams
Robin Williams in What Dreams May Come. Best Robin Williams dramatic role in my book.
D.t Chon watch the final cut, 24 hour photo, and that movie where he has an affair with a gay prostitue

Michael Keaton in Clean and Sober. A devastating performance.

I didn't see Adam Sandler in Punch Drunk Love and I usually don't care for his comedies, but I actually really liked him in Spanglish. It was a comedy yes, but Sandler plays a dramatic role in it. I was really taken by surprise by his performance.

Ryan Reynolds in Buried?

Neil Patrick Harris in Gone Girl?
A Nice Guy Probably didn't make the list because he did Doogie Howser which was semi drama.
His performance was average in Gone Girl, but then again anyone would of looked average in comparison to Rosamund Pike in Gone Girl
A Nice Guy Not that good, nor long enough
A Nice Guy Or maybe Tyler Perry. The one and probably only time anyone will ever wish a movie had more of him in it!
If he were the lead role he would have been on the list I think!!!
Finally, a countdown I can ACTUALLY agree with!!!
I agree with Robin Williams but I thought he was best in Patch Adams. Yes it was very funny but I think it covered some great drama too. He was an amazing actor. He will be missed.
At least an honorable mention for Marlon Wayans in Requiem for a Dream.
Jack Black in King Kong!Wow WatchMojo wow...
They didn’t include him cuz he’s not funny
That was the first time I came across watching a comedic actor playing a very different role.
You guys need to make another of this!! I mean Adam crushed it in Uncut Gem!!!
Hanks WAS a comedic actor til Philidelphia, which blew everyone away!
11:14 I LOVE HOW HE SAYS THAT OMG IDK WHY BUT I JUST LOVE IT SO MUCHHHHH
jonah hill in moneyball was overrated. he should have been an honorable mention swapped with will farrel in stranger than fiction. eddie murphy was superb in dreamgirls. him not winning the oscar was the academy giving him the finger.
beefyoso I always get pissed when people act like it was Eddie Murphy's fault for getting snubbed. Yeah, he made "Norbit", but that somehow invalidates his performance in Dreamgirls? Sandra Bullock accepted her Razzie for "All About Steve" the day before she won an Oscar for "The Blind Side"! It's bull.
beefyoso the same finger they showed to jim carrey when they not nominated him in 1998 and 2004.
beefyoso Dreamgirls was a terrible movie, Murphy was good in it but still... plus he lost to Alan Arkin, so there's no shame in that.
Jonah Hill is overrated full-stop.
Marlon Wayans In requiem for a dream?
I know it’s only movies but I feel like Bob Odenkirk as Jimmy McGill deserves an honorable mention, if not first place on this list.
O Captain! My Captain!
Time for another top 10 dramatic performances by comedic actors suggestions:
- Marlon Wayans in Requiem for A Dream
- Tyler Perry in Gone Girl
- Jennifer Anniston in Cake
- Owen Wilson in Midnight in Paris or Wonder
- Seth Rogan in Steve Jobs
- James Franco (is he considered comedic idk?) in 127 Hours
- Ben Stiller in the Meyerowitz Stories
- Sacha Baren Cohen in Les Miserable or Sweeney Todd
- Vince Vaughn in Brawl in Cell Block 99
- Melissa McCarthy in the Nines
- Whoopi Goldberg in the Color Purple
- Kristen Wiig in the Martian
- Chris Tucker in Silver Linings Playbook
Marlon Wayans, Requim For A Dream?
Absolutely agree with you! I was expecting at least an honorable mention!
Thought I'd see Jack Black in King Kong on this list... At least honorable mention
Adam Sandler as Barry Egan is incredible, his performance in that movie is amazing. That movie will be classic someday, if its not already.
Oh Captain My Captain
Zero Mostel in "The Front" (1976) He plays a black-listed entertainer during the 1950s McCarthy era. It is chilling.
Reign Over Me> Punch Drunk Love
Woah wow wow wow wow, you guys totally forgot Jack Lemmon in "Save the Tiger", "China Syndrome" or my favourite "Days of Wine and Roses".
Well, i highly recommend it though. Jack Lemmon is one of the best actors Hollywood has ever had.
At last!!! I almost scrolled down the whole comments section to discover a reference to Jack Lemmon!I was about to think I hadn't noticed a small print, something like "of the past 20 years" in the clip description.Thank you Marco!
Please check out his marvellous performance in "Missing"
