Adam Sandler Acting in a Serious Role is Heartbreaking

- This is a scene from Reign Over Me (2007) with Adam Sandler and Don Cheadle. Adam's character is finally opening up to his friend about what happened to his family. I spliced it over some scenes from later on in the film for more dramatic effect. If you haven't watched this film, I highly recommend it, it's not all the time you see Adam Sandler in this form.

I was a teenager in DC on 9/11. I made the decision to join the military because of that day. Over the past 20 years I have lost most of my close friends avenging that day, we all joined up to avenge what we saw that day.
I totally understand the character after that 5 minute clip. I have spent the past 5 years in a trailer in the middle of nowhere having as little human interaction as I can possibly get away with.
i know how you feel, i reenlisted after 9/11 and went back to the middle east. Still not over the shit i saw in 91 and probably am going to end up with a bullet in my brain in the next 10-20 years before i waste away from alzheimers like my dad and grandfather, i dont know what im doing these days and i dont know if it was all worth it, sometimes i wish i died overseas so i didnt have to deal with life back in the states, apart from some people i talk to online i dont really interact with people either.

Never forget that Adam Sandler is an amazing actor and chose to do less serious films in order to support his friends by hiring them to work on his films. He traded a more fulfilling career for the opportunity to elevate the lives of his friends. Pretty good trade if you ask me.
It is very respectable. And he cast his entire family for Leo, that movie is beating out Wish.
I’ve never heard him say it but I would bet Chris Farley’s death dot that tbh. He lost one of his best friends amidst the prime of both there lives and because of it took pains to make sure none of the rest of his friends would ever want, and where always close if they needed him for anything. Respect to a true friend
He also made those movies some of the best return on investment and consistently profitable movies as a whole in the industry, it’s actually pretty impressive tbh.
I never knew that, I never liked him because of all the bad films he's been in but I have a newfound respect for him for helping the boys
But if he had a more fulfilling career.. then he could pay his friends
The symbolism of him locking himself away to play Shadow of the Colossus, a game in which the main character goes to slay giants in order to bring his loved one back from the dead, that always stuck out to me and made me sad that non gamers wouldnt typically catch that little bit of detail.
I think it also had deeper semblance in terms of a hero fighting such large monsters. A hero so small that he literally had to climb over them in order to defeat them.
The whole game is perfect the symbolism of crashing rubble...the main mechanic being holding on and letting go
Cracking game too!
@@thesaintsrowspartan Also the "monsters" are innocent -- he isn't defeating bad guys, he's killing innocent collossi to save the one he loves.
@ericstech3181 yeah! I thought I remembered them being innocent! Good catch. Maybe its symbolism is one of innocence - Along the lines of no one is at fault and its just tragic misunderstanding and clearly time has not healed wounds and instead festered which hurt everyone along the way. I don't know, I'm not poetic enough ro understand the full nuance. Hahahaha

It's always heartbreaking watching comedic actors act in a serious drama film. It's like looking at that one friend who's always smiling and they just break and you can't recognise them anymore.
Because its the comedians/funny people who are the saddest ones.

With the friends, with people, that’s how depression and anguish and pain are shown.
I’m an emotional person, God has blessed me with the ability to feel, to empathize with others and that has made me more emotional that most boys my age.
And like all people I have problems, in my life, it seems like no matter what I do, what I accomplish, how strong my relationship is with God I’m just let at the end of the day unhappy and unfulfilled.
I’ve seen things and experienced things that most 16 year olds haven’t, and I felt so horrible about certain stuff I decided to change personality and how I treat people entirely. I try to make people laugh, I’m always there for my friends, I wish some people would check in on me so I make sure to do that for my friends.
My point is, as this usually happy and energetic person that tries to be in a good mood and treat people well, it seeps in from time to time and I just break. Emotions suck
@@dutchdragon2472that was my philosophy when I was younger. I was writing my note and I sat back and realized why I felt so awful was because I was focusing so much on making the people around me laugh and feel good that I was sacrificing my own happiness
@@dutchdragon2472 I think the reason I try to make people laugh is because it makes me feel like I'm happy, even if it's only a few minutes, and I'm not actually happy.
Adam Sandler’s performances range from “Grown Ups” to movies like Reign Over Me, Uncut Gems, and Spaceman, and that’s why he’s such a iconic actor.
I would love to make an Spaceman one. That movie is all about loneliness and interpersonal relationships. 😌

Anytime Adam is in a serious role or scene he will always steal the show. He's definitely one of those comedians that can easily handle serious topics and plots with ease which makes me wish he took more of those roles.
Yeah it's kind of a shame. I think his comedy roles suck, to be honest. He really shines in serious, emotional scenes. Real talent
another actor similar to that is Steve Carell he is obviously a comedic actor in a few projects but when it comes to serious roles wow does he nail it like he is also so talented aswell as adam

In my opinion his only good comedy rolls or Billy Madison and Happy Gilmore those are the only ones I like
I wish he would have taken to play as Bear Jew in Inglorious Basters.
@@southernpride2003 Big Daddy was good. So was Waterboy and Mr. Deeds. You're selling Mr. Sandler a bit short. Every time I see Adam Sandler out of his acting roles, I always had this suspicion that the sadness in this clip was closer to how he actually felt than any of the funny movies he acted in.
What's cool is I cut the scene, but if you go and watch the movie, he basically breaks down during the scene in real time. Its amazing.
This is so true for the majority of comedians, they often had rough lives and use comedy to help bring a joy to others that they themselves can’t enjoy

Hey! Thanks for the nice words! This movie is very special to me, I wanted to shine light on it.
People never notice that Adam is actually a good actor. I've watched some of his films or parts of his films where it's actually serious and he manages to kill it.
This is also giving me some Breaking Bad vibes with how that empty house is seen with flashbacks of an old life but now it's all gun, even our main man just broken. And coincidentally Bryan Cranston used to act for comedy, then he got casted for Breaking Bad.
9/11 is my earliest clear memory. Hit me like a truck when i realized what he was talking about.

There's also that basketball movie he did, Hustle. He has a surprisingly big range of acting skill. They're almost type-cast in comedic, goofy characters until they aren't, and they go hard.
