    You’ve helped me lots with my 1 year old Jack Russel, and I often recommend your videos to other ppl at the park who ask me about my dog… It always a learning game as dogs develop new habits. My JRT knows the leave it when we play tug etc and have taught her lots with that toy,. The one thing I’m having trouble with is when we play ball and fetch (she loves it and goes nuts to get the ball, but when she comes back she won’t leave the ball now and holds onto it. I think other dogs taking her ball has caused her to not leave it even tho we often play away from other dogs or alone. I think this long line might help but would appreciate any tips for this! Thanks for all your content, it’s great.

    Mr Cabral, you dont use praise, your voice, body language, facial expression, to raise and lower drive? In my heyday [1970's] competing champion obedience, belonged to several dog training clubs. They were all year round and we trained in village halls. To be successful at a show your dog HAD to work like Goofy, that level of drive and engagement. I can just imagine the chaos if 10 of us started throwing balls or playing tug!!! So we were heavy on the intonation, speed, pitch. Then we'd compete with each other to influence our dogs drive with FACIAL EXPRESSION. It worked on ALL our dogs!! Amazing HOW tuned in a dog can be. We usually had a larges audience also, Pet people with dogs and puppies from the "lower" classes. A lot were struggling to with control sitting with their dogs watching, especially things like retrieve. I always noted the serious ones, trying to use us for distraction work, they didn't know that's what they were doing, so I, and the others, would help them. It's how I became addicted!!

    When it comes to any reward, the value is up to the dog. Praise, food, toys or affection can be valuable ONLY if the dog finds it reinforcing. Many people start with food and transition to just praise/affection and eventually the behavior erodes (less reliable), so they go to using corrections for non-response. This is like your employer deciding to omit your paycheck. You’ll eventually stop working. You can go to a variable pay off schedule with things your dog has proven to like (food/toys) supplemented with praise and petting. Many people thing positive reinforcement doesn’t work reliably simply because they don’t know how to effectively use the dogs preferred currency to build the behavior, make clear criteria, and then make variable but fair pay off. If done appropriately, you won’t need to use corrections.

      That IS a great question, and I wish more people put thought into what they want out of a dog BEFORE getting a dog. I used to watch "Lucky Dog" with Brandon McMillan, who would work with shelter dogs, and I remember him saying that it's important to know the history of the dog breed when making a decision to bringing a dog into your home. (I'm just getting started with Robert Cabral's videos, and I believe he stresses that, too.) He says too many dogs are placed in shelters because people don't realize what they are getting into when they get a cute puppy...do they think they can remove the internal instinct out of a dog? (Getting a herding dog for apartment living, and then being mad at the dog because it has too much energy or it destroys things, etc....) After reading your question, I looked up the info on Brandon, and apparently he has a book coming out in April, "The Story of Your Dog. " From reading the description, maybe that would be a good resource to start? I thought he had mentioned a particular resource years ago, but I don't know it off hand. Otherwise, maybe pick your top 3 breeds and research the heck out of their history... Maybe that will help you find the pup that suits your lifestyle. Good luck!!

    I have a Great Pyrenees who is doing well with obedience training. These toy techniques for rewarding seem very useful, but I haven’t been able to get her to respond to any kind of toy, ball or other game reward yet, unlike other dogs I’ve trained that love toys and games. Sometimes she will run around with me and play with me in this way, but will never react to toys, despite having prey drive and catching many moles without being taught. Am I just not tempting her with the right toy or using the right technique? I got a flirt pole and will try tempting her with it. Her most valuable reward of all seems to be affection, as she constantly craves it from family members and especially my husband and I. Should I use affection in place of toy rewards if I cannot get her to respond to them, or reserve affection for the end as you recommend and use treats throughout?

    Robert I’m having issues with my GSD giving up the ball/toy. He guards the toy and doesn’t want to give it up. It makes playing ball really frustrating and a little dangerous because he sometimes hurts my hand. Also he takes the rewards from my hand a little aggressively. How can I control this? Thanks for any input you can provide!

    • @convidtruthshallout
      @convidtruthshallout 2 роки тому +2

      To prevent guarding, it’s necessary to give the dog a higher value item than the one you want him to release. So if he has the ball/ toy offer a treat, he drops the ball/ toy he then gets rewarded by having the treat or another object he prefers. To prevent getting bitten throw the treat/ object away from where his guarding, he will go for the treat releasing the ball/ toy. Take the ball/ toy and repeat, by allowing him the ball/ toy and then throwing a treat or object away from the ball/ toy. Eventually he will stop guarding the object as he realizes there’s always something better on offer! To control aggressive taking of treats or toys I tend to ‘push’ slightly into the mouth, and say no firmly but don’t release the treat until my dog is gentle then he gets the treat or toy as a reward for being gentle. I think Robert has videos on guarding , look them up , all he’s videos are really informative.

      Is there a reason for the fear? If you have plain wood stair treads they can be quit slick and frightening for pup to use. There are cheap carpet pieces you can buy that stick on. If it's just a pup who has no experience with stairs start with a single step at the bottom. Throw the treat high enough up he has to hop onto the first step to get it then run back to you for reward. Repeat it for several days and gradually increase how far up the steps you throw your treat. Looking down a flight of stairs from pups hight is terrifying. Do it sometime, get down on all four and craw down, bet you don't 🤣. But going up the stairs is less so. It can also help to have the dog navigate different obstacles in life, things such as hoping up on platforms on play sets or getting on top of a picnic table, even climbing logs on a hike build spacial awareness they need to be confident on steps.

      In the USA Police Dogs & Protection dogs are often trained using different languages to prevent someone else from commanding your dog. German is quite popular but I prefer Czech because it is not popular.

    • @susanlippy1009
      @susanlippy1009 2 роки тому

      I think it's far more common with trainers involved with protection sports. Agility trainers don't do this nor will you find PetSmart trainers doing it. It's popular on UA-cam with the same crowd. Watch Zack no German, Kikopup no German. So what's the common denominator? Protection training where German commands are frequently used. So no not all trainers are using such. German does not in any way sound Russian tho.
