I'm pretty new to real dog training. One thing I keep noticing about the better videos like this one, is that dog both respects and *trusts* the human. It's not based on fear. The dog knows that good things (food, treats, praise, affection, play) consistently happen when they engage with the people in an acceptable way. That makes a lot of sense to me.
I just watched a man teach me to play tug with a dog. ... I don’t even have a dog. But thought it was great how that dog hung on every word. Enjoyed the video.
I have a female GSD who is very healthy and ran everyday, but by watching this video I have realized that I haven't been mixing fun with obedience and command training, good to have something new to work on between owner and pet. new subscriber!
When my dog gets to win, he looks so proud and excited! So i let him win! Hearing you say that's a good thing, made my day! Goofy is amazing! You've done incredibly training him! I look up to you, I want to be as successful with my own dog, as you and Goofy!
This is a great explanation. I see too many people ruin the value of tug by doing it wrong (who knew u could play ‘wrong’ with your dog?!? Lol but it’s true. You want them to be as engaged as possible and this method helps a ton. I will say I personally disagree about the ball though. Some dogs (my own specifically) sees ball as an item that only I make fun. He can’t get it back to me fast enough and tosses it at me for another mini session of heeling or whatever before I toss it again. He has no interest in playing with it away from me. Maybe he’s an enigma but I just wanted to point out that some dogs are like that! P.S. He’s a Belgian too, in case that wasn’t obvious from my user name 🙂
Absolutely love this. Been playing frisbee and tug with my rescued Malinois and I’ve realised I win more than she does :-( Will correct this. Thank you @robert Cabral
I'm realizing how much I'm doing wrong with my dog watching your videos, but we are both learning from them. Great videos still trying to find one to help my puppy from biting me and everything.
Makes total sense .. I'm doing almost exactly what you do when playing thug with my dog but without having been trained to do it. Althoug this is the case I get tons of nuggets of tips and tricks along the way watching your vids. TY for sharing.
Yes Sir this is how I play with my 10 weeks Rotty telling him this is my toy and I have food treat bc he gets distracted right away I learn from you better than other people from You tube 🤙
This is the most excellent dog training video I have seen. Robert explains the psychology brilliantly. I have a 4 month old Tervueren and we are already employing these principles with great results.
I have a 10month old catahoula and I really wanna thank you for all the videos. I really identify with your philosophy of work and its been amazing to train with my dog. Plus I learned new things to motivate me and him even more. So thank you again for all these insightful simple explanations.
I learned alot from your videos as i bought a dog for my kids and the dog ended up being my responsibility i had to learn how to train him and after 2 month searching found your videos that made all the difference. Most videos treat dogs like babies which was not working with my dog . Again thank you.
Listen closely at 4:15.... it is a game of you WITH the dog.... not VERSUS. It is not a competition... it is a cooperation for your dog's benefit. There is no winner and loser. The dog needs to play with the object and you need to control the game and the object FOR the dog to his benefit...
It's really important you wrote that you release your grip on the toy also when you say "out". I make the mistake of trying to pull the toy out of my dogs mouth while saying the command which makes my dog release slightly and then bite down again and release slightly and bite down again a few times in succession because I guess my pulling confuses her into thinking I'm still trying to play while she is also trying to obey my command. I'll try releasing my grip next time I play tug with her at the same time I tell her to release her grip. Love the idea of letting your dog win sometimes! I do that with my dog and she loves playing tug of war with me
Your dog is very majestic and precise with his movements. My lab is like a bull in a China shop! I tried to do the through the leg trick and he put me on my back and twisted my ankle haha
What are the signs that you have an "engaged" dog? Is it perfect obedience? Velcroe behavior? Accepting affection? All the above? Thank you for all you do.
my friend has a beautiful orange golden retriever and she loves playing tug with me because she usually wins, now everytime i come over to my friend she sits on my feet because she likes me so much!!! I miss that dog everytime I think about dogs.
Awesome video about the game of tug. I use a tug toy from time to time when I teach my Ruby. Sometimes she is more toy motivated than she is treat motivated. Sometimes she she do not even want the treat and I have no choice to resort to a toy.
Awesome video! There is so much to know and understand because small things make huge differences. Whats the best way to end the playing time? Kind of contradicts the motto "when he brings it, we will play". So how do you end it?
Thanks Robert! Really liked the explanation. I've a service dog that loves this game and watching your video helped me better understand what was going on. One quick question if you have time. When I let her win she goes off and pull up the grass with her front teeth until i come get the tug toy. Any thought on how to stop this and why she is now doing? Thanks, Mike Schwartz and CHEVERLY (2 YEAR OLD Goldern)
Wow! This vid is pure gold on tug!! I will be watching and referring to this a lot!!! So ugh- the advice that you should win the tug more than the dog is bad advice then? Should you end the game by you or your dog winning or does it matter? ("they" also recommend that). Your info on dominance there is awesome. Thank you. Also- what if a dog you are dog-sitting (who was not taught to play tug politely) starts getting too mouthy/trying to grab toy when you have it? Ask for sits in between? THANK YOU FOR THIS!!!
love these videos on training. Especially with the Malanois. We just got a little Maligator! Goodness, does the biting ever stop? I hope so. We love her, shes full of personality and I am watching your videos religiously to train her effectively! She is super smart.
Love watching your videos, I learn so much. I would like to know what tug you are using? I have not found one that lasts my dogs hard playing. Any recommendations ? Thanks
ah good, a dog trainer that isn't abusive to the dog to train them. This dudes right you wanna play just like you would with a person. And if someone always beats you in a game, you wont wanna play them anymore (most people). I disagree that you should always let the dog win though, should be about 40/60 to 30/70% split
I have a Belgian Malinois mix who does this, and I don't even have to give her verbal signals. I get the leash, and she automatically sits. I bless whoever trained her, because she's awesome!
Thank god I found this channel because id hate to spend £1500 and have a dog traind in the wrong way because the dog loses I lose a good dog and a big chunk of change
Really enjoying the videos! My 4 mo old puppy likes to play tug. Sometimes she wants me to chase her to play tug, so I'll chase her. Then I'll go the other way and hide and she'll bring the toy and find me to keep playing. Is this establishing a bad habit (chasing in play) or a good way to engage her?
My dog will play tug with me inside, do things for food inside, do things for praise inside. As soon as we leave the house, he wants nothing to do with me or food and won't play with toys I take out other than the ball. He'll play tug with a stick but there's not always one around or they snap. He's most engaged with me if he has a ball in his mouth and I pick up a stick. He'll be very attentive and obedient but there's still a chance he'll run off to chase other things. He resource guards the ball against other male dogs and can get aggressive. If he senses I'm going to end the game and put him on the leash he'll become totally disobedient. Any pointers for how to get the same reaction with no ball and stick?
I read the comments below. I agree you’re a good trainer/handler. You know how to get your point across with solid clips. Nice job!! BTW why did you get a Bel. Mal.? There are lots of other breeds?
Please help. My Dog 7 months old Cane Corso when plays Tug of war with me doesn't releases his grip. He doesn't wants to stop or quit. please guide what to do.
Hi Robert, your channel should be required viewing for all working dog owners. Question - I follow your guidance with my 2.5 year old boxer. We play tug to train, and I let him win as you instruct. At that point he wants to keep the tug and is totally uninterested in a second identical tug, no matter how hard I try to make it interesting and more fun (even on a long line or training in the garage). Your video suggests the dog will automatically find a second tug to be more fun, but I’m struggling here. How do I make him want the second tug even more? Hoping this makes it to an “Ask me anything”. Thanks!
try using a toy that he will trade out. Try using treats to get him to out. if that doesn't work, watch my dog training video with Maya to teach the OUT!

Yes! I spend so much time conveying this simple concept to my clients. Be patient, be consistent, and make it FUN!
I just watched a man teach me to play tug with a dog. ... I don’t even have a dog. But thought it was great how that dog hung on every word. Enjoyed the video.
Robert has this way of making all of these things sound simple. He’s clear and articulates himself well.
"the dog learns to win" So well said, Robert 👏👏👏
My Giant Schnauzer did't want to let his tug go. So I brought in a second one, just as you said. He has both now.

The game of tug can be a deep rabbit hole to dive into. Once you learn the subtle dance that is the great game of tug, it's like a paradigm shift.
This video could also be used to explain playing with kids.
Most of the children I know don't have that jaw strength.

I’ve always been told to not play tug with a puppy. Is that a true sentiment? Great videos, by the way! I look forward to watching and learning more.

My dog like to wrestle me. He bites my arms like this dog bits his toy lmao.
I notice at 2:25 when you say down, he comes out of the sit and then downs.
Working on my pup now. He’s getting better, but seems slow at wanting to play more
Great explanation :)
Do you have a video on hand gestures for common commands like sit, down, stay, come, etc.?
I do have one in my member section at robertcabral.com
What kind of tug toy do you use? I have a German Shepherd Pitbull mix and it's hard to find toys that are durable enough for her.
A quarter of a push bike tyre might work. You could tie some rope around it or something if it's uncomfortable to hold
