The symbol at 6:49 looks a lot like the Quixel logo, a company bought by Epic Games that provides 3D assets and materials.
Yes it is. I guess this implies megascans assets have been used in CS2. Now we gotta track which ones...
@@MattyewMashew It might not mean megascans. Quixel also makes a 3D texture paint program called Mixer that Valve may have used.
Was gonna say the same thing it’s spot on for the logo, ya beat me too it😂
Had a wee look through some of the obvious probs, can't find any. I'm going to guess it's materials they used, but again, if they did, there's probably some heavy editing as the CS2 textures in italy are a lot flatter and "stylistic" than a traditional megascan asset (or atleast with comparison to the close examples I seen in megascans). All the more interesting if they used scan textures as it kinda contradicts the art direction? Making a guess, just feels odd that it's potentially got quixel assets in there, CS2 always gave me the "substance designer" procedural feel to the materials.
they have been using quixel suite for awhile to paint models, a pull quote on Quixel- "”Holy shit this is bad ass”

I like how CS2 is a lot like CS:Source where the maps show that Valve are having fun flexing the new technologies of their shiny engine
Yeah all of Valve's Source games post-L4D1 were really boring visually, like they forgot what made Source good in the first place.
@@DuneJumper???
Are we really about to say Portal 2 is visually boring? I think you just mean to say the engine itself got less technically impressive
@Sandbowl The overgrown foliage parts were good, but beyond that a lot of the lighting was grey for no reason like L4D2 or CSGO.
@@DuneJumperI’ve read that games from that era often opted for desaturated color palettes in order to compensate for more advanced lighting techniques. It seems Valve were no exception. Now, though, PCs are advanced enough that that trade off is no longer necessary.
The one thing (STILL) missing for me is the opera at T spawn and music at CT spawn :(
Yeah I wish they brought that back too.
Ah Inseparabile, performed by Pavarotti if I'm not mistaken
e il sol dell'anima
In the early years of CSGO, that Pavarotti song could be heard though it was barely audible but it was later removed. Also, don't forget the guitar chords of the left passage way of CT spawn.
@@XanderNiles Yeah I made a video recently that contains all CSGO's map melodies, and the one at CT spawn is included as well. I wish they didn't have to take away our music :(
I just want to see the new models for the Separatists, GIGN and so on.
Same, i got so hyped when the SAS got updated and wanted to see the same level of love and detail given to all the other faction models like IDF and Separatists.
With no dust 2 Ts plastic fortnite faces
Imagine if one day we got a proper Basque map added?
Sadly I think Valve is dead set on having the SAS and Phoenix be the only default models now. We never saw even a port of the other models when Nuke and Overpass shipped so they’ve probably given up now
@@yobobby9 for real
Its crazy how different cs2 looks artistically from csgo. The art direction is so much more different.
Yea, I thought it looks like some valorant now
it looks much better than valorant, valorant has much more flat surfaces and looks way more cartoony.@@JuliaYamYam
@@JuliaYamYam this looks nothing like Valorant.
Looks horrific imo
@@JuliaYamYam I see it too, it feels like its going towards their style
That final bit was 11/10. Perfect.
As an Italian, "more cocks and less pagina" almost made me spit out my coffee
As an Italian, I say the hostages must be sacrificed for the sins they have committed. And more pagina for everyone
And that writing at 10:49 to fit into speech 😂
Whoever remade the map clearly had a lot of fun doing the worldbuilding. My favorite hostage map by a mile, and the most balanced too.
Office is way more balanced than Italy
@@EurovisionESCUnfortunately the office is not overhauled like Italy. It would be interesting if Valve updated the office like Italy
@@EurovisionESC I love playing office; but it’s far from balanced… It’s a heavily T sided map
@@AlexanderGeorge nah... Depends on hostage spawn but it's way more balanced than you might think if played right. It's extremely beautiful to play it as CT where you clear , corridor by corridor until the T are stuck in a couple of places, then it's all about knowing how and when to push. I absolutely love CT on office
@@AlexanderGeorge Office is way more balanced, I would only consider CSGO Italy a balanced map if the game allowed the CT's to carry like 8 nades each. Most defuse maps allow T's to smoke a whole site without ever seeing any CT player, while in Italy as a CT you have to rely on winning the early peeks so you can use the smokes strategically, the map also forces the CT's to split up more so losing a player is a much bigger disadvantage than in Office
you never disappoint with your cs content for non cs players
Haven't played cs in 3 years. Haven't missed a video either

8:28 probably it won’t take long for any pro Geoguessr to figure out where this is lol
Alps?
the mountain absolutely suggests the alps, but the texture may be a whole different place in the world lmao
Quick, someone get rainbolt on this.
Italy looks so much more real now. I always felt like this map was some abstract representation of a city where nothing makes sense if you look too close. Now it finally feels like it belongs somewhere in the world.
I noticed the signage in particular. The old signs in the CS:GO version literally didn't make sense at all, e.g. all the one-way signs. They all got replaced in the CS2 version by more sensible signage. It's small details like those that make me so excited for CS2...
That was the case for every map in CS before. Inferno, overpass, mirage... I could never picture what the fuck those places were suposted to be. I mean, I kinda can, but it never looked like a real place. Now I can finally see.
@@tiburc10🎵 "I can see clearly now the source 1 is gone" 🎵
I don't know mirage and overpass I could picture (and anubius and ancient but they were basically made to be ported instantly to CS2) I just like their atmospheres.@@tiburc10
@@ElecEdit knowing what the signs mean makes it less beliveable, like some of those blue arrows are used for vehicles, but they are placed in areas where you cant get in with a car at all. Even some cars are in unaccessible spots, like that yellow car that drove over the walkway to get inside a narrow alley. Tbh the whole map looks like you cant get in with a car, but thats understandable for gameplay.
Overall its still a pretty good job assuming none of the devs are italian, the signs are accurate and add alot to the environment, just some of them are misplaced.
If youre not italian it literally is a non problem
That CS2 room at 1:24 is incredible. I want to live there. Why haven't you made a 10 minute video about this room yet?
I always knew that lighting is the most important aspect of a game to make it look realistic, those warm tones and that bookshelf scream coziness! I agree!
its literally just a normal room with minimal decoration
@@slendydie1267 And it looks beautifully lit
It looks kinda like Mordecai and Rigby's room
I think that's a good reason to make the video yourself
The stone reflections are out of this world!
gosh, yeah. I wanna lick all the materials in the game and stare at them for hours
@@WangleLinebro.....same
Can't wait for CS2 to release for the public.
Same here!! I want to toy around with it myself so bad
2 days (real)
@@m0m3nt45yeah that is not happening
Without replacing CSGO tho. If they replace CSGO outright with it i wont be playing
The release will be in December
this map is absolutely beautiful. italy was one of my favorite maps in 1.6 as a kid, so to see it be recreated so beautifully (and the new passageways!!!!) makes me so happy to see.
as someone else said, i do miss the opera in t spawn and the music in ct spawn. i know valve could put a small radio there and have it play quietly without really ruining any sort of "competitive" integrity italy might have. maybe they just dont have licenses to the songs, iunno lol
When I heard the opera, it was like an art, the game and the music together, I felt like I am in the best museum.
The opera (Pavarotti song) was there in the initial years of CSGO but it was removed at some point and as for the guitar chords in the left passage way of CT spawn, that one kind of gave away your position.
Besides, Valve is trying to do their best to keep everything to fit the competitive environment but at the cost of killing the atmosphere of the map.
Breakable fruit. Pinnacle of technology.
source 1's fog blending would actually just fade the overall fog color depending on how your camera is rotated. It's really horrible when you notice it, so it's understandable nobody used it. I tried many times too and always just reverted it. This is a much better implementation.
I’m sad you didn’t show the 1.5/1.6versions at the start :( I loved playing Italy
Italy was the first map I ever played in CS (back when we played CS 1.6 at an after school club in the late 00's) and it's still my favourite to this day. Love the way this makeover looks and really interested to see how the gameplay changes feel once I get my hands on CS2.
I love how Source provides a great sense of identity to the games built within it. UE5 is beautiful, but feels same-y. Thank you for the showcase!
Samey is the perfect word to describe it. I can always tell which game used Unreal engine. Even if I don't know it.
exactly
I love the colors of CS2, especially Italy always felt so pale and dead, now it feels like a small Italian town
as an Italian I love this version of Italy, it really feels like an existing place
One of my favorite CS maps of all time. How much I played hide n seek on 1.6 on this... Good times
I can't wait for it's full release. And I can't wait for you to teach us about the S2DK. You had teached me how to use the SDK for Source and I really hope you will also do the same for Source2.
Knowing Valve it'll just be an updated version of the hammer we got with Half-Life Alyx. An SDK is so far away on their to-do list, when the creator of Garry's mod wanted the sequel to be in Source 2, Valve just send him the 50tb half-life Alyx repo.
I hope I'm wrong and we get an SDK, and Valve has been doing a lot of great stuff lately so I guess I won't completely ignore the possibility.
@@tricursor2481S&Box kind of feels like it's trying to be a substitute for a real Source 2 sdk, even though it's Garry's own fork of Source 2
@@No-mq5lw yeah and that's the tough part. We've all been waiting so long for Source 2 that we were fine with Garry using the super early version in Half-Life Alyx which means that Garry and his team had to implement net code, water, and a ton of other stuff, which makes it very distant from what will be in games like CS2 and even further in the future Neon Prime and HL3 which have vehicles, water with fantastic realistic water effects, etc. I guess it's not THAT big of a deal, but i really liked the relationship gmod had with the source engine, and HL Alyx being VR means that the first version of source 2 might have the best physics ive seen in a game, but lacks some of the major things that a non vr game or gmod would use.
@@tricursor2481 dota2 got it's own sdk, alyx got it's own and it wasn't a repo from dota2 which was the first realease of S2. CS most likely will have one of it's own. It's one of valve's most important title... So i don't see any reason why would valve do that.
10:30 have we lost something? why yes we have, we lost the music in the market, t spawn, and ct area
I wish Valve would have added more of these minor changes that can change up the play of the map.
These two new path ways add so much to this map.
I am amazed that he didn't find the 2 bananas in the box that have the wood bullet hole texture when shot and don't move.
hi philip, I ocasionally see small stutters like 8:21 and 8:59 on your videos
do you know the cause of this? I'm having this issue on my pcs since ages

4:28 There are similar windows in the first chapter of HL:A, though they didn't look as good as this.

10:10 THANK YOU! I spent the entire video from the milisecond those plates showed up wondering if they were breakable, this part felt like someone finally managed to scratch that itch I had in my brain.
Damn this map is absolutely gorgeous
I kind of liked the open sky view from CT spawn on CS:S Italy.
I am loving this addition to the analysis cs2 videos so far. Love italy ao much!
Wow. Great review. This is the first CS2 map I have seen. Super-impressive. I spent a summer in Italy and I can attest to the realism and research Valve has put into recreating an Italian town.
How many Italian bunnies you fked ?
One of my fave maps back in the 1.5 era. There's definitely a pizzeria rivalry sub-story hidden on here!!
The sign at 5:44 is pointing towards a place that seems to be inferno, look at the logo on the bottom right. Kind of interesting! Maybe a hint of what's about to come?
Nice detail of the sky looking blue farther from the sun and red towards it, redshift and blueshift effects.
I didn't expect that outro, so funny! 😆
looking at the new Italy make me more excited to see the new inferno
Italy is by far the most half life alyx map in CS2 so far I do like it but I don't really see any counter strike personality to it anyhow excited to see more
Original CS 1.6 Italy had this color palette btw
@@lukkkasz323 oh sick so a nice reference for the og then? (I didn't play 1.6 it shows) if that's the case then definitely thumbs up to valvo
visually, this is a real treat
Lovely video, fully agree with you in the end :3
As a fellow italian citizen I have to say Valve went above and beyond with their homework to make this look like a real place in Italy, from the street signs, shops, bars and even interiors look so real and accurate to real places, almost feels like home
But I liked old Italy. Sorry bro.
But I liked the creepy dark bricks and opera back in Source. I miss the old horror show haha
I think one or two maps look interesting at sunset bathed in pink but when all maps have that I'm not sure about it. I think it'll be refreshing when they move away from strawberry milkshake lighting for everything but the maps are still beautiful and unique
your videos are so refreshing, probably due to your voice that goes great with counterstrike as a whole. Only complaint i have about Italy is the logs being changed to stairs with a normal entrance. =[ I always remembered italy for having that window and it being a small skill check to get in... also campers hiding under it behind that box.... sad to see it changed soo much
Looks amazing
While I don't like the lighting changes/art style shift in some of the maps, Italy is one of the handful I can look at and say I think is a complete stylistic and graphical improvement. Which I can say as more and more maps get remade.
And while overall I don't fully like the changes in comparison to CS:GO artistically, I'm warming up to them much more as we keep getting these maps. I very much think that they just needed time to grow on me, and I'm sure there are a few others that feel the same about it.
waaaaaaaaahhhh waaaaahhh waaaaaahh change bad i hate change waaaaaahh
The map looks beautiful but I’m sad that it lost its personality a bit.
It’s missing the special source vibe, this slight eerie feeling. Almost not Italy anymore
Its the missing music, and less stone.
Yes, the uncanny vibe of Source, the graffiti flag of Italy, the rickety bicycle in CT spawn, the strange opera echoing the hallways, the winery down the mysterious stairs of T spawn, the dark bricks color scheme, black steel bar fencing, quiet...it felt like an almost abandoned Italian town of the 1920s or something along those lines. Just old, isolated yet self sufficient, like a war torn kind of creepy little town.
As a North American living in the suburbs, towns like that give me the chills, and yet a wholesome sense of nostalgia of a forgotten but beloved era.
Beautiful!
this is the kind of content we need to appreciate the amount of work and passion cs mappers possess.
Thanks Philip to uncover all these "hidden gems" for us
This map is so gorgeous but I think my only complaint is that I feel like it's lost some of it's distinct counter strike personality. Something about the smoothness and the insane amount of details makes it feel like something less unique to counter strike, like this map reminds me too much of illios from overwatch or parts of ascent from valorant. It's really hard to describe but I think it's best exemplified by the main split building, I like it much better in csgo because I feel like its simplicity adds to its beauty, it feels real but also appealing while the new buildings looks too much like a mainstream instagram post I guess. I don't want it so sound like I dislike the changes, I just am sad that some maps are losing a bit of source engine character, I do feel live they've managed to maintain that better with some of the other maps though so maybe its just a bit of a learning curve :D
The CSGO has much detailed ground and wall texture. The CS2 one has smooth surfaces but Vibrant Color. CS2 one totally relies on Color and Objects around when CSGO relied on Detailed Textures and Dark Shadows. It's more Atmospheric.
I prefer the CSGO one.

i love italy, it's great to see how the changes look
I love that glowy peachy Source 2 lighting. Reminds me of Half-Life: Alyx, even though only a bit of the game has that.
I'm just sad you don't show the 1.6 version of maps when comparing.
Wow the ending took me by surprise xD
That mysterious logo seems to be quixel logo. Its a popular tool & library for texturing. Makes sense.
For me csgo is trying to achieve realism with a primitive engine whereas cs2 is going for a stylize map
Initially Hidden Path made csgo's artstyle realistic, dark, and gritty.

this is the italy in my head from 1.3 but now fully realized
I havent played any version in ages. Can't wait to try it out.
Honestly I think the new color palette for Italy is much more of an improvement than the other Source 2 maps. It's very colorful but less saturated, and more romantic, it paints a different view of Italy but one that seems more videogame-y. Having drab, sorrowful, or otherwise down areas be less saturated makes a lot of sense, but the CS:GO Italy just looks depressed. It's finally a CS2 map that I think really soars past the original vision of the map, into a new, creative direction.
I'm going to call the lighting: "pastel lighting" Feels... like the color palete of textures are less realistic.
I think this is the best graphical map in cs2. Walls and floors that are 3D that actually have things sticking out rather then boring 2D with visual 3D illusions are unimpressive in 2023. Also, interactable objects really bring a map alive imo. Doesn't feel like the map is bolted down. Like overly clean home or babied proof home.
It looks amazing
2:39 just gave me a flashback to when I discovered your channel (I think). I might be misremembering, but that shot with a CT on the logs and burning molotov on the ground popped up as an ad before a video.
Maybe it was something else though, has been a while. Must have been like 2014, 2015ish.
The attic bar is awesome!!
the GO italy had a power outlet in the appartments that was clearly an american plug, it always bothered me they didnt use an italian outlet, I Will have to see if they fixed thet here

I like the map changes! Are all the models separate, or did they batch parts together? I’m
Curious what xray vision would look like in the marketplace
This map really looks Beautyful, i would love to see some extended version of it someday somewhere.
Did NOT expect that ending at all
Btw as an Italian i can say
This is " Civitella del Tronto " (unfortunately I don't live in that city)but you can see on the ct side how accurate it is
Recently i see it in a newspaper and it reminded me that
that soft pastel haze over absolutely everything reminds me of overwatch 2
It kinda feels like the map is alive if you think about it. When you compare it from cs:s to cs2 it feels like the map, italy, has been renovated which is cool to think about
Banger closer!!
I've said it before but I love listening to your analysis early in the morning with a cup of coffee or tea philip. It might be creepy, but it calms me so much xD
A little detail is that they added bins based on the real ones we have in italy, you can see them in the comparison at 0:10
That's my fav map in the entire counter strike franchise. I used to play cs_italy a lot with my friend in cs source. I hosted a server and he connected through hamachi and we just had fun messing around. And now it induces this eerie yet somewhat nostalgic feeling of days when you were able to have fun and nothing to regret
Love your latest videos and it really makes me happy how much content you’re pumping out. The 3kliks content offensive is in full swing. Hope it’s paying off analytics-wise.
I liking the new changes to map esp the new pathways, i didnt knew the balcony boost until now 🤔
What a strong finish to the video
"Ivy flaps about, cobbles peek out..." I see what you did there
Long way... yet underrated!
I will be queueing italy, there was a phase where my friends and I played Italy nonstop, we just love the old maps and how different they are from newer and more competitive ones
Model trim, crazy new lighting tricks, source limits removed. I pog uncontrollably everytime I see a new map with all the bits of trim to play with when I get my hands on the editor
Feels like home 😌
In the market area there is a travel office which uses the inferno banner as their company logo.
blud had me green turtle emoting at the end there, totally caught me off guard 😂
The sign at 1:05 is so damn accurate to something you would find here in Italy lmao loving it
I like that havok pun you sneaked in there
Ending really got me lol
Looks so bright
Are you doing a version of this video for Inferno? That'd be great. Your comparisons have been the best around. I wonder if you could add 1.6, too, though maybe that's too difficult since it's such a different engine and the dimensions are so different.
I LOVE ITALY!
awesome
It looks like the ivy patches on the flat walls and many of the surface textures (and possibly plants in the pots) are from the Quixel Megascans library. I do not know why they made Quixel logo in rainbow colors, possibly to avoid copyright so that it can be kept as an easter egg?
