Interesting that you don't want to share the experiences from trail anymore. You are the best videographer I have ever seen specific to trail videos. Your style is unmatched by others in this niche and your videos have had a lasting impact on me. When you took down the videos years ago, it was a loss for me. It has been nice to rewatch some of the old videos that you produced and released recently. Hope that you return to making new videos from your current Thru hikes in the future. You have a gift!

"I no longer want to share it because the trips that I do are so sacred to me”
I get this. Talking about trail and certainly sharing photos or videos from it has been something I've done reluctantly, or atleast had difficulty with. Having said that, your video series from the PCT, CDT, and AT, are more than any other, the reason I was inspired to thruhike. For that, I am grateful to you. Whatever it is that you do with your hiking videos, I hope you find what feels good for you. Only fondness for you, always.

“At first I did it for the positive attention I got for it, and then I no longer want to share it because the trips that I do are so sacred to me”
This was super relatable. I have so much footage of hikes that I no longer feel like sharing with others because I just want to keep the memories to myself. I’ll slowly edit them over time, but I’ll just keep the finished video for me to look back on.

Thankful for whatever it is you decide to share to us. I am basically on the same boat when it comes to sharing my hiking photos or videos and mind you I only have facebook as my means of social media. Never was interested on instagram. I say honor and respect how you feel. If you don’t feel like sharing then it’s all good but please know that any content you share to us are appreciated and viewed with such high regards. Keep on hiking! Stay wild John. Much love from Los Angeles ❤️

Thanks for putting your stuff back up. I’m sure it’s strange to have footage of your adventures mean something to people you’ve never met. As someone who loves being in wild places, these videos help brake me from the stress of a busy modern life when I’m too sucked into it and remind me that wild places are reachable, we just gotta go.

If theres one thing I'll never forget about my thru hike in 2021 on the pct was meeting John. The kind words John communicated to me and my wife gave us perspective. Thank you John for taking the time to chat.

I cannot express my feelings in words. I hope you find calm and enjoyment this summer
and I hope you will share your experiences. This means a great deal to me. Take care and thank you.

I don't live near nature (Thank you Chicago) and I used to watch your videos to remind myself that it's all still out there. Thank you for putting some of them back up. They really do bring small amounts of joy to my little city life.

Thank you for this content John, always feel like listening to an old friend even tho we never crossed paths and probably never will.
Thank you for sharing back some of your videos on your channel, I know this is getting redundant but you really are an inspiration for so many for getting out there and enjoying the outdoor. Profundly happy that you've found your mojo back and the people will always be there to listen and watch what you feel like sharing with us. Your calmness, the precision of your words and just the way that you make these videos have always been something else. Your GDT serie was my favorite!

Your videos inspire me to be out there. And when i can’t be out there, they remind me what to look forward too.
I hope you upload all the videos you took down, I noticed some of them aren’t on the channel anymore.
I want you to know that some of us here get more out of your videos than you probably give yourself credit for. And when you took them down, you in a way took away more than the sum of the parts you contributed.
I hope you continue to inspire others.
    Thanks John.

Thanks so much for taking and answering questions, and sharing with us. It means a lot!
Really loved what you touched on eating-wise. I would usually just have a bar in the morning and snack all day while walking. But would do ramen or something for dinner. I was nowhere near good enough with my calories and always had a hard time falling asleep once in my tent. I'll take this into consideration next time so I'm more well-fueled throughout the day. Thanks John!

I can understand not wanting to share your important moments: often we end up paying more attention to what OTHER people think of our story, rather than what our journey actually is for us, and what we are transforming from and into. That said, I think it is important we share our compassionate words with the world, because there is so much suffering, and people are desperate to find their own way to to peace. It is a true Bodhisattva who shares the path, the method, of finding inner peace. And you have certainly done that John. Thank you for all the peace you have lived and shared, it makes this world a better place.

Interesting that you forgo dinner. I tended to feel better when I walked 5-7 miles before breakfast, and then end with dinner at camp. I think hunger motivates me to get going in the morning, but a (relatively) full stomach helps me fall asleep.
I also thought sit pads as soon as you read the question. I never understood everyone’s fascination with them.
I totally get your current attitude about filming on the trail. I feel the same about my own hikes, but that doesn’t change the fact that your content held a special place in my heart. Your work is honest, beautiful, and emotional, and in my opinion it captures the experience of a thru hike perfectly. Thank you for what you have given us over the last few years, and good luck with your journey forward.

How about that… I’m sure you enjoy being creative with videos (if not I guess I also understand). But you could just do literally whatever you want, any topic and I’m sure a big chunk of this channel would support and follow your development into something new. But anyways thank you for your inspiring work. Even a simple q&a is such a nice experience. I appreciate artists like you.

Love the composition and lighting of this video. Since you've mentioned no longer wanting to share videos of your trips, have you thought about making and sharing videos unrelated to your thru hikes? You mentioned how you've always enjoyed making videos since childhood, have you ever had a desire to pursue filmmaking whether documentary, like your trip videos, or even narrative? I know I speak for many when I say that you have a talent for it and we would love to see more regardless of whatever form it comes in.

Thanks for putting this out. I really like your mindset(or at least what I perceive your mindset as being) about these hikes. You crush your hikes, do you ever struggle with the elevation? I ask because its a hurdle for me. I love the vistas and seclusion that the mountains in the West offer but being a low lander I struggle to acclimate after putting in the effort to get out there. It's totally worth it to me though.
