Honestly your pct hikes cdt...an fkt on the CT are next level inspirational for me! Your method of cinematography with music choices an story telling... I've watched them all dozens of times! Thank you again for making them public again! 🙏
The Art of Walking by Austin Seder is the best recent PCT doc, in my opinion. Extremely well made, humorous, good pacing, and shows the trail in all of its facets.
Hey :-) Awesome to see that "Tell it on the mountain" is featured here. I am Sauerkraut, the guy who got injured. In my days all movies from Squatch and also from Team Bad Wizard were awesome too
Sauerkraut! Tell it on the Mountain was the documentary that got me hooked on the PCT. I've seen it probably 100 times. So happy you got to come back and finish the trail after your injury. My first attempt last year ended at Cajon Pass due to several factors, but I know I will go back and finish one day. I will section hike for the time being, but thank you for being an inspiration and an example of the determination that thru hiking requires!
you legendary bro respect how you stay fed on the trail though lol a bag can’t fit enough food for 100 days
Hey John - thanks for this vid. Is your fan edit of Chris Williamson and Billygoat available somewhere? Your GDT videos blew my mind and motivated me to change my hiking style and get out onto the GDT. I've just got section B to go
thanks John! maybe this will make me consider the PCT as a thru hike
looking forward to watching the vids you recommended
1. 6 million steps: a journey inward.
2. Nick went hiking
3. The high sierra trail
Last I checked, I enjoy your PCT clips the most. Watched them back in the day and return from time to time when days get hard
"Do More With Less" was filmed in 2014. I know cause I was on it that year. I am that last dude in the doc talking about having the power to do anything, and how the PCT brought that thinking to my life.
It's interesting that you mention re-watching these movies over and over each spring, one of the hiking movies I rewatch each spring is your trip on the Lowest to Highest. I was low-key upset when it got hidden during the Covid lockdowns haha! The music in it is perfect.
Hi there! Im from UK so its all different here but I still enjoy watching people doing PCT and dream on being there one day.
I will check those videos too! My fav from PCT was Elina Osborne one, she is sucha cool, laid-back girl, awesome editing too.
I am walking John Muir Way from tomorrow here in Scotland, getting ready today and packed up. It only 215 km from Helenburgh to Dunbar but im still new to long distance walking and dont want to go crazy lol
Hoping to do in less then 8 days but will see.
Love your videos and editing too! Top notch stuff.
Cheers for now.
Over the years I have collected around 8 PCT CD's. I have all of Squatch's movies, and several others. Some pretty good, and others not so much. Every once in a while, I binge watch them all, remembering my younger days, and dreaming. That one shot of ADZPCTKO brought tears to my eyes, remembering the three I attended. Just now I'm calling Firefly, who, with her husband, Dennis - Fire Walker - were the Trail Angels in Old Station. We haven't talked in years, and it's time for a fix.
Not really a movie but Magnetic North's PCT series is the most beautiful of the genre. He really captures those moments of beauty you notice that almost never get filmed.
Here, here to that!! His 50min 'Magnetic North' doco hits many sweet spots. Authentic, cinematic, beautiful, personal. Magnet also got ‘photo of the year’ in this year's PCTA photo contest I noticed
Shout out to “As It Happens”, the PCT documentary that got me into thru hiking
Amazing intro to As it happens
I also think this is one of the best. I wonder if John has seen this one.
great job recently with your uploads; i enjoy these topics that deviate from typical thru hiking related content
I still hype up your PCT and CDT videos as being some of the best out there. I just saw Walking West with Freedom which was refreshing and amateur in the best way possible. Thank you for your insight and your recommendations
The massive crossword puzzle and random chunks of plywood caught my eye!
I miss your gdt videos 😢
Thanks John! I did not even know about these ViDs. Your ViDs give me inspiration. Peace
Small detail, do more with less was filmed in 2014, not 2013. Source: I was there 😉 -DP
Your CDT FKT vid blew my mind and was an absolute inspiration. I don’t know how many times I’ve watched it. A bunch though. I was living in PA at the time and while I had never thru hiked, I knew I wanted to someday. 2019 I came down to Florida and thru hiked The FT. These days I’ve gotten more into bikepacking for a few reasons. Mostly for the amount of miles you can cover in an amount of time as opposed to walking. My gf and I just did Segment 8 of the EDT (Florida section. The EDT is more or less the ECT but on bikes. We did almost 1,200mi in 20 days and I hiked The FT in 3 months. Anyway, I’m rambling lol. Later, man
Haven't seen any of these! Will be checking them out. Thanks John.
1. "It Is The People", "Just Passing Thru" (kind of similar documentary)
2. "4,270 kms - A PCT Documentary"
3. "The Art of Walking"
4. "To Measure a Mile"
5. "Our 2015 PCT thru hike" (despite its terrible title)
Bonus: "Pack & Soul" (magnificent documentary on the AT)
My favorites by far are the four documentaries by Scott Herriott - Walk, Still Walking, Even More Walking and Walked
I liked ( A Quest for Canada) think my favorite 😊 I have watched all yours also😉 Loved them!!!
You and Scott are both legends got me on the PCT!
Oh yeah! I just watched Walking The West this past year or so. I did so remind me of the 90s but in a great, nostalgic way. There was an older tv series called Trail Wise or Trail Ways (not sure) that got me into hiking as a teen. It really reminded me of that.
Lion kings walking west with freedom is always fun to rewatch. I preferred his shorter pieces he shared on UA-cam prior to the final edit
I really enjoy Peter Hochhauser's PCT documentary titled "This Is Not a Beautiful Hiking Video".
that is a great video
Walking the West was the first PCT video I’ve seen. Within a year I was thruhiking the PCT. Weirdly, the misery of Dale made me want to do it the most.
This is awesome. Thanks for the heads up on these videos. Looking forward to viewing them.
My favorite PCT and CDT documentaries are by Shane O'Donnell, The Wizards of the PCT and Embrace the Brutality.
Trick question because John Z's videos are the best. Without these videos I would have never found the inspiration to do it myself.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on these films. Looking forward to watching Walking the West.
I would recommend checking out:
1. To measure a mile
2.The art of walking
3.Northbound on the Pacific Crest Trail
4.Magnetic northbound
5. It is the people
Chris Carter - to measure a mile is my favorite 🌻👣
Always a pleasure to wake up to a new John Z film. I can't think of another person (incl Jimmy Chin) that could make a better documentary about Billy Goat and Scott Williamson than you. I wonder if they're still with us.
Thanks for sharing again.
would love to make that. my sister saw billy goat along the pct a couple summers ago and i've heard that scott is living in a great pct trail town
@@JohnZahorian hey John you use to have a supercut video of the pct. Would love to see that again
I liked As It Happens and To Measure A Mile. For daily vlogs, IB TAT's and Daisy's PCT hikes. Also, Adventure Up High for the CDT has a great soundtrack.
Jester’s Wizards of the PCT is my go to, followed by the 3 part Scott Herriot Documentaries Walk, Even More Walking, and Walked.
Thank you very much for sharing John!
Nice picks! Cool to see "oldschool" hiking,
Please check out The CDT 2013 with Huck Finn. Okay it's not about the PCT but still probably my fave hiking documentary. Only 14 minutes in length but he does an amazing job with editing, music and capturing the experience.
I really enjoyed Austin Seder ‘Art of Walking’. Did it for me.
I really wanted "Tell It On the Mountain" to be a great documentary, but I agree with your thoughts that it is lacking in many areas. If the film had just focused on Scotts YOYO it would of been a great piece. At the time it was an incredible accomplishment on the PCT, still is.
The way that you feel about these PCT docs is the way that I felt about your Hayduke Trail video! Any chance you'll make the video available again?
I've only seen Tell It on the Mountain and it was an interesting cross-section of the people, but didn't love it overall for many of the same reasons. The other two look great though!
Thank you for putting this opinion piece together.
Syche! - can't wait to see those.
Thanks John!
If I'd known there was a Roger Sellers music video with PCT Footage, I would've been on it a lot earlier
When I turn 17 and my cousin turns 18 we’re going to hike the Colorado trail
Homemade Wanderlust PCT documentary on UA-cam is #1 for me.
The artistic elements of walking.
Only the Essential!
I love your framing!
Are you doing the sound with your modular gear?
Can you post ur fanedit of the film where you mainly include scenes with billygoat and scottW?
i enjoyed "The Art of Walking." very well done.
Is that a magnetic Conway's Game of Life in your background?
Great vids. Have you seen Thru yet? Story is so so but the cinematography and music selection really drive the series
i was really excited to see it but then it was behind a $100 outside+ paywall
Do More with Less was actually filmed in 2014.
ah, yes, i misspoke
Have you seen Wizards of the PCT by Jester/tbwproduction? It's absolutely hilarious and he has films on the rest of the triple crown too
Show us the fan edit!
thanks for sharing! are you able (or willing) to share the link to your abridged fan edit of ‘Tell it on the Mountain’?
Try watching "only the essential"
Thanks dude!
Check out The Art of Walking. I feel like it has been the best one I’ve watched thus far.
Well done
What about “wild”??
Yeah boyyyyyy
We were kind of cheesy in the 90’s so it fits for the first one 😂😂😂
My PCT section scenic "movie" has 100 views years later. Terrible music and I'm hidden 99% of the time and not a spoken word. I liked your PCT film the best next to the CT speed record film. I have some New Zealand footage and CT footage and PCT Washington state footage from Years ago I never got around to publishing.
🍿
What about Walk from 2003?
You should review other youtuber's mini documentaries on their PCT hikes
I really like The Art of Walking by Austin Seder, who is now walking the CDT this year (hopefully making a film about that, too). ua-cam.com/video/nzCZdMyQuQ0/v-deo.html
Looking through the comments for other favorites.
My favorite...

👍🐿👍
wait you clickbaited tho lol. now you have to tell us where you think your own documentary videos fall in this rating system, or you're jinxed for that clickbait title (it's a f*in good title tho)
walking the west is my favorite :)
