Driving slow cars quickly - Enduro in Automobilista 2

  • Its not always about the most exotic cars with the highest horsepower and the most downforce. In fact those can sometimes be more infuriating to drive than they are fun! Going quickly in a slow car cannot be underrated as a way to relax and have a good time. Driving a car which is not trying to kill you around every corner in a large field, around an easy circuit, in changing light and weather conditions. There is a lot of fun to be had in Enduro racing, and Automobilista's Copa Classic 'B' Class are perfect for simulating it!

Pumas were our "Ferraris" at that time (70's and early 80's), due to the closing of the mark for importation during the military regime. This car had a fiberglass body and a 1600ml air-cooled VW engine (Beetle). Love these cars 'till Today!

This video put the AMS2 bug back into me, and pushed me to drive some of the cars I really don't drive as much as I should - eventually ended up in the '74/'75 F1 cars (Formula Retro Gen 1) with the '75 skin pack from Race Department.
Absolutely incredible! Especially with the lastest tyre updates that have been coming out, the front end no longer feels like it has way too much grip compared to the rear, especially with those HUGE rear tyres.
If anyone wants to have some fun, try recreating the '75 British GP at Silverstone with the crazy weather. Dry, rain, dry, heavy rain/storm. It's difficult, but incredibly rewarding when you get it right and don't end up in the fence at Club like most of 'em did in real life 😂

I think the idea of "driving slow cars quickly" is exactly why GT4's and TCR's are becoming more and more popular nowadays. Low cost vehicles that are slower but more fun to drive and are available on a competitive level around the world are what bring both viewers and teams into the folds of both classes, unlike classes on the more expensive and trickier end (GT2, Trans Am, Le Mans Prototypes, etc). Feel like that's why no one likes DPi anymore and can't wait for LMdH.

Yeah, your previous video was at Yahuarcocha/Ibarra, Ecuador. I'd love it if we could someday get a mod of the old, 10-km circuit around the lake, kind of like Potrero de los Funes in San Luis, Argentina.
I'm less keen on Campo Grande, Velo Citta, and Velopark (and Caruaru if it was in AMS2), but that still leaves several good Brazilian tracks on the slate. I wouldn't mind if Fortaleza got added at some point.
There is at least a mod for Super TC 2000, as far as I can tell, for AMS2. It would be nice if, at some point, there was also Top Race V6 and Turismo Carretera. And yes, I know, this is more focused on Brazil than Argentina, but it would really help fill out the South American side of things as a whole.
Also, some of those Argentine series have visited Brazil from time to time. Not to mention, it would be more good Touring/Stock Car material.
Of course, once you get to that point, it's like, "Okay, what Argentine and Uruguayan tracks do we need to add now?"

There are some Pumas in the US, as far as I know this first generation has not been sold, but the following ones were, I would love to know how they were sold, because there were definitely no Puma dealerships, I don't know if they were through independent importers, maybe some VW dealer, since it's built on a Beetle chassis, or if the Puma had a representative in the US, and people called after seeing an ad in a magazine and ordered one.

My grandfather had a Puma, and the way they got around the trade rules brazil had in the ~70's-80's was the cars had the engine and axel removed, and were then legally able to be sold in the US as a 'kit car' in magazines of the time. I remember him saying you ordered one, they showed up on a flatbed, dropped off the car, the engine and axle, and if you knew what you were doing would have it up and running in a few hours.

Looks like lots of fun. The madness engine really starts to show its age nowadays, though. Day/night transitions still look very pretty but the cockpit lighting and especially those gauges look like they are a generation behind the status quo now.

interesting take, i think ams2 is one of the most beautiful sims out right now. im not sure what else in the sim space comes close!

@@GPLaps Yeah ok, if you compare it to other sims only, then it is still top notch, even though I think ACC looks a lot better and more realistic. Then again, most other sim graphics engines are very old at this point and since I play non-racing games as well and see what they do with lighting and effects, my perspective might be a bit different. :P

@@TheRealFLX81 TAA blur aside, ACC clearly looks a lot closer to the real thing than this game does.
What bothers me most about AMS 2 from a visual perspective is how sterile and artificial it comes across, especially in sunny midday conditions on foliage heavy tracks like Oulton Park and Brands Hatch.
Grass and trees both have a plastic like appearance as do the cars which often look more like model toys than actual vehicles, even with mod liveries.
Despite its weather system and certain lighting advances, to me AMS 2 severely lacks the naturalism and grit of its predecessor.

As a brazilian, i can confirm. And the Puma GT (the model used in game) is my all time childhood favorite car, and it's the car that made me fall in love with cars and racing.

They ruined these lower series in the last major update. The fwd cars all understeer like crazy, the Fusca Copa and impalas are sloppy now I really hope they go back and patch these base unique content pieces they marketed the game with. They used to be a blast to drive.

I did feel some oddstuff in the fwd cars but i didnt know of that was because i dont drive them often. the Puma was a lot of fun, just had to reduce the steering ratio

@@GPLaps I tried this combo yesterday in both AMS 1 and AMS 2 and what struck me immediately is the massive lift-off oversteer on the Puma GTE in the first game and its (almost?) total absence in AMS 2.
Also tried the Gol and I believe one of the Passats and these too were substantially more temperamental to drive in AMS 1.
Hard to say which approach is the more correct, but it seems unlikely such a major difference is simply due to divergent default setups.

It is of course in Portuguese, but see a Brazilian league racing this exact setup: ua-cam.com/video/RjNkK1bdQ_g/v-deo.html. It was an amazing championship.

I mean, come on this is a new Sim. Why does it still look so bland? I have a beast of a PC and a professional Simrig, so can we at least get proper working shadows and moving spectators? Imagine driving through the Nordschleife and you have the full 24 Hour setting with spectators moving along, BBQs smoking, people taking pictures and the fully operating fun fair in the background, choppers and marshalls working at the trackside. It could be all baked in. Every calculator should be able to compute this shit by now. Yet racing sims still look like it´s 2004.

Why do Americans pronounce it Poo-ma, should be pew? It's a U not an O. The clue is in how you pronounce the letter itself... you. Also goes for things like You Tube and Duty.
