Cunningham and the BEST 1950s Le Mans Simulation

  • The 1950s at Le Mans were the peak of romance with the great race. Small diminutive sleek sportscars, each brightly and proudly painted in the country colors of its entrant. There was an innocence and excitement for the race, a challenge unlike any other. An unfiltered test of man and machine, 50+ sportscars, all with a unique approach to solving the 24 hour problem. But that innocence, that youthful exuberance was tainted in 1955. Not just for those competing, but for all of us looking back as well. So often the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of Le Mans in the 1950s was that faithful event, and not the stunning race it was.
So lets relive a bit of what made Le Mans so special in the 1950s, muscling the large American Cunningham around the 8mile circuit in a mini endurance event!
Thanks to WooChoo for making this all possible!

GPLaps, the Jaguars would have had Girling disc brakes. The C Types in '53 were the first ever cars to run disc brakes at Le Mans.

    • @ManuelSanchezRosas
      @ManuelSanchezRosas 2 роки тому +10

that's correct and Mr. Cunningham had ordered same disk brakes for his cars, Girling never delivered and he had to race his cars with drums, very "patriotic" act hahaha

Oh my goodness, Jake ... this is an exceptional video! In fact, this is far better than a video about sim racing; it is a rofessional documentary. The choreography in the intro is sublime! You are taking sim racing to a whole new level. It must have taken you hours to compile this. Thank you very much for bringing us these glimpses into the rich past of auto racing.

I did a near-identical LeMans in the Cunningham a couple of years back and loved the experience. Crashed late into the race and turned a 5th into a 14th but thankfully a couple of Bristols had a coming together and caused enough of a mess that I finished 10th. Got about 45 minutes into the race before I found out there was a 5th gear in it though! Didn't change the top speed but my fuel economy improved drastically.

Simply amazing video... I watched last weekends Le Mans in pieces live but didn't get to watch it properly so I'm using the 10 bucks I paid on the official site to watch it again as they added hour by hour replays. It's strangely enjoyable to watch the 24 hours in replay while listening to the commentators chatting. There's always something new to learn. While watching I was thinking about how the Mulsanne didn't have the chicanes originally, so it must have been crazy.. There's a short animated film some where on the disaster on '55...

Can we please have a modern sim title that 100% represents vintage racing? Not mods for old games or mods for games that can be pain to use. Just something built from the ground up to take you back in time.

Wonder what this video would look like in grainy black and white newsreel style. I'm sure it would look fairly realistic. Once again you've nailed the video taking me back to that time. I went to Le Mans 7 times from 95 onwards and the loudest car was the Panoz. I say one thing for the Americans they sure know how to make a car sound amazing. I swear you could hear that Panoz going down the Mulsanne straight from the Grandstand. Why do you Americans add away to straight? Seems unnecessary but I guess there's a good reason. Maybe from oval racing. Thanks once again for a great video. :)

Great video again :) I love watching things like this
I was pleasantly surprised by how well the Cobra body morphed into the C4R shape. Didn't really need any extra effort because it seemed so willing, besides adding the oil cooler, and the fairing behind the driver. The Cobra body and chassis turned out to be fairly well suited to the 50s style in general, and a big thanks to Mantasisg who did a whole heap of work developing the very basic physics changes that I started with.
The trackside sponsors are mostly the names of scientists and mathematicians of the last few hundred years. It was a fun task. I had to dig a bit for resemblance in some cases, but I learned a bit more about the history of science as I went along. Sometimes the scientist's field of interest related well to the real-world brand/product they were replacing, which was satisfying :D

I saw that car run last weekend. There is a great museum not too far away that has a collection of sports cars. Every couple weeks or so, they pull some of the cars out of the collection and run them around their lot behind the museum. It's awesome to see, hear, and smell these cars in real life. The most recent event was entitled "Americans are Le Mans" and they ran the Cunningham, a few GT40s including a Mk 4, a Corvette and a few others, including one from the early 20th century. It was cool.

22:15 So, in timed races I don't think the AI is capable of doing any kind of smart fuel strategy. They'll just take a full tank of fuel and new tyres (did they do that in that edited-out pistop, though?). In distance-limited races, however, they do consistently end the race with only a few % of fuel remaining, at least if they manage to get in a handful of clean laps in practice or qualifying. Otherwise they'll use the built-in estimate which can often result in them running out near the end of the race.
Sadly I think they are still not capable of syncing tyre strategy with fuel, and instead taking a new set every stop (again, as far as I know. It's been a couple of months since I did proper testing) . At least with the recent update they can at least choose a temperature-appropriate compound while they're at it.

Only 95% AI makes them very slow in the corners. So they aren't nearly as committed through Maison Blanche meaning they lose heaps of time on the start/finish straight. At Tetre Rouge they often tend to make a mistake on exit, again losing massive time on the Mulsanne straight.

We need the Cunningham C-5R with the more slippery body.
Admittedly, it seems like the other cars you're running against are from a few years later, so it's not entirely a fair fight that way, either.
The Cunningham is listed at 300 hp, whereas the standard Jaguar D-Type has 250 hp. The big difference is the Jag weighing 600 lb less (2,538 lb to 1,929 lb).
If that's the Ferrari 375 Plus, that's 330 hp, and 440 lb less than the C-4R.
And the DBR1 has similar output to the D-Type, but is 160 lb lighter still.
In terms of British lookers, the D-Type is nice, but I think I have to lean toward the DBR1 on the open side. As for coupes, the Lister-Jaguar Costin GT.
I mean, with the 1955 crash, you just had the pit apron, not even a separate lane. They didn't add the wall until 1971.
And a 300 SLR would just murder you, with 310 HP and being 550 lb less, not to mention, probably more slippery than either the 375 or D-Type; the DBR1 would likely be more similar in terms of its aero efficiency.
They called it the Signal Pits there just exiting Mulsanne. That onboard video with Mike Hawthorn from 1956 is a really good one to reference.
The DB3S still had some success. However, it only had 225 hp, so even with it being 380 lb lighter than you, on outright pace, it shouldn't be able to trouble the other cars out there in the lead group.
The D-Type, DBR1, 375, and 300 SLR ought to be good for 170-180 mph on the Mulsanne. And yeah, closing rates could be up to 100 mph, probably. In the mid to late '60s, that might have bumped up to as much as even 120 mph, with the Ford GT40 Mk. IVs capable of 220 mph in the top end.
The C-4R did win Sebring overall in 1953, the first-ever race of the FIA World Sportscar Championship.
It seems more likely that that's a Gordini T24S than a Talbot Lago T26C.
To my knowledge, you still can run only 2 drivers at Le Mans, but nobody has planned for doing that in quite some time.
McQueen had an XKSS, basically a roadgoing D-Type.
It's hard not to think of Old Spa after seeing this, and having more of the lap be corners might make the mix of truly competitive cars more interesting. The 1953 Spa 24 Hours was a round of the very first season of the FIA WSC.

Yes, many, many 24h races have been run in rF2 over the years. Some went perfectly well, others had issues. VEC just did 24h of Le Mans earlier this month. All 3 division servers ran without issues. And yes, you can have real players and AI in the same race.

Great vid although the very hairy hands were quite distracting... :o Did they not wear gloves in the 1950s?

How can you get the physics right without driving these cars irl?

I mean, there's "right" in the sense of exactly replicating the real car, which is something sims have been striving to and falling short of for 40 years now. Then there's also "right," meaning it's great at delivering the fantasy of driving sportscars in the 50s, which this mod is very good at.

Why did you shift so early in 5th (~6800rpm) ... seems to me you lost a lot of speed due to that?

Awesome as ever 😃 I 'tried' racing the Jag at Dundrod recently. That's an exercise in patience. I guess you've seen the Mike Hawthorn video at Le Man's but, just in case, and I'd hate you to miss it, here's the link: ua-cam.com/video/IpRFagIbcPE/v-deo.html

Could we have an actual link to this mod that actually works, aside from having to jump thru hoops via the hated Steam? Anyone know where this mod can be obtained away from Steam? WHy did they choose to use Steam in the first place? the most hated unfriendly platform in the world??? Nice videos though shame.
