As a former hummingbird parent, I can say it is truly a labor of love raising these guys. They need to be fed constantly and are much smaller and more fragile than most birds you'll work with. Hats off to this guy for raising one, it's really not easy and takes a dedicated person.

I moved farther north last year and thought my days of seeing hummingbirds were done. I was out in the garage and saw one swoop down and try to check out a yellow cap on a gas cap. I was amazed.
I went inside and got a feeder ready and when I came back the poor guy was stuck in the garage flying at the window. I picked him up and warmed him, and gave him some fresh sugar water from the feeder I _just_ setup. After about 10m he left, and kept coming back, probably all summer long... I had 3 hummingbirds that I noticed.
It was amazing to feel that delicate bird, with racing heart, like a single cotton ball in weight.

Eventually I picked him up and cleaned him, also fed him with a syringe with honey/water. Good for you & your compassion.
I found a downed nest of 5 songbirds being eaten alive by ants & bugs, too. Rescued them quick & stayed up w/them all night, till the Wild Care here opened. Quite the time!
They contacted me when they were ready for release, some weeks later.
They were bare, except for a bit of head feathers. Looked really funny!
I tried feeding them, after I very carefully washed each under some warm water & blotted their bloody wounds from being hacked at. :/
But the mom knows what to feed & regurgitates it down their throats, till she can just bring food for them & hold it for them to eat. I didn’t have anything they’d eat & couldn’t find any worms to attempt to pulverize & feed with.
I was told it was amazing they lived through that & all the hours that passed before I could get them to Wild Care. They’re usually fed every 30 minutes, round the clock by mom. So right away, 3 ppl there began the task to save them.👍
      So glad they all survived!

My daughter actually saw a newborn "thing" on the pavement just outside her door. How she saw it without stepping on it is beyond me because it was SO small, no hair, almost transparent skin. Not even 2 inches long. Eyes still closed. Looked like a small hairless mouse. It was SO new that it had no identifiable marks, tail, or bone structure.
My daughter is NOT an animal person, not self-sacrificing at all, and being a wildlife rehabilitator since I was three (I'm 55 now), I was all but certain he would not make it, especially given those two circumstances combined.
Unbelievably, she kept it alive and thriving, eventually passing it on to a rehabilitator near her.
It took a while but she finally got a picture from the rehab of it's toddler self, with a note saying, "Congratulations! It's a squirrel!"
Not long after came his release day.
Now when things seem bleak in my own life, all I have to do is think of that time and remember, miracles happen every day.

My wife and I started putting out Hummingbird feeders several years ago, and I think the same group of hummers (my wife calls them squeakers) come back every season. We can almost mark the date on a calendar, but usually the last week of April. They often announce their arrival by hovering close to us while we're out in the yard and squeaking.
When our Hummingbird group leaves in early to mid-September for the southern migration, we keep the feeder up and supplied until early to mid October for any southbound Hummingbirds needing a quick refuel for their journey.

God bless folks who do things like this. I have nearly 30yrs experience in the avian field having worked "hands on" with everything from Warblers to Birds of Prey and Budgies to Macaws. And "hummers" as i like too call them are NOT EASY to take care of. There metabolisms run so fast which is why they are constantly needing to feed. And the 500+ mile migration journey the Ruby Throated Hummingbirds fly is simply an incredible feat for such a tiny animal. We call them "the jewels" of the bird world for good reason. So thank you sir for doing your part we ALL need to be more aware of the world we share with these incredible creatures.
