So true, we removed one of our feeders from a window one year and for several years after they kept looking at that same location, so they return to the same area for years later 👍😎

We don't have hummingbirds where I live but a sparrow once landed on my arm and only flew away after five minutes. This encounter was enough to make me feel like a disney princess for the rest of the day. It must have been amazing to save that little hummingbird.

U would be surprised at how trusting they are.. the same hummingbird was at my feeder all last year and he wasn't afraid if me.. I didn't bond well enough to have it land on me but it would land on a plant I was holding.. so close but not quite.

Apparently birds' brain structure is quite dense and efficient. Hence you have some, like crows, that can be very intelligent. Certainly I'd expect birds to have some memory of "good" and "bad" things like foods or animals or people they encounter as part of their survival mechanisms. But what I've read about crows and related (corvids) is quite amazing, in terms of memory and problem solving skills.

I did something as a child.. maybe 8 or 9.. we had an above ground swimming pool, and there were usually a few drowned bugs floating that you had to scoop out before you went swimming.. One day, there was about a dozen black and yellow bees.. not sure what kind.. I thought they would be great for school.. I got a piece of cardboard and covered it with tin foil.. then took each bee and lined them up by size.. Then I got some straight pins from my mom's sewing stuff.. and I stuck pin through the smallest bee and then into the cardboard.. so the bee was suspended about half an inch above the foil.. I had a couple rows of bees and was proud of my project.. I left it outside on the picnic table.. when my mom got home, I went out to get it, to show her, and to my horror, half the bees were alive and buzzing, wings vibrating, legs moving.. I was stunned, sickened, almost.. and I couldn't believe I was responsible .. I honestly don't remember what I did next, but to this day I cant even touch a dead or dying creature

Hummingbirds often got stuck in my home/barn and i often found my after they dropped from exhaustion. One literally fell and bounced off my head while i was cleaning. I picked them up and took them outside and grabbed the jug of suger water that we used for the bees, filled the cap and let them drink until they were moving about, then i moved them to perch on a tomato plant and rest more. Little thing hover around me for a few day after that when i was outside.

Ennhhh, Yes'n'No? Hummingbird (and there are a beautiful varieties of them!) have an INSANE metabolic rate. They need make a frequent but not constant intake value.
What's amazing is some the things they do!
When active, their hearts beat, if I recall correctly... Something, like... 200-600 times a minute? But, during sleep, their metabolism and heartrate drop shockingly.

Brought back a fond memory. Saved his life 💫 I almost stepped on a little baby hummingbird that had fallen from the nest when I was about 18 in in 1980ish. He was going to die. I scooped him up and took him home to figure things out. I loved animals and had many pets growing up but to nurse up a baby hummingbird…once in a life time opportunity. No internet back then so I had to make a soft little nest in a shoebox and used a light bulb for heat. I mixed up some honey and I think wheat germ thinned down with water. Using an eye dropper I fed him every few hours ( middle of night he would make noise when hungry ) I had him for about a month. .. until it was time to let him test his wings. I let him try in our living room and had crash pillows everywhere. Finally he looked strong enough to go outside and fly with his buddies. He sat on my finger just like this lhummingbird in video. He didn’t want to leave. Then ‘poof’ he took off…only to circle back and hover in front of my father and I then take off. I have 110mm photos my mom took somewhere in the house but wish I had better pics. But I have the great memories of my little ‘pet’ hummingbird I saved. This video 45 years later made my night 06/19/24 💫 blessings and much love

I picked him up and held him until he came to. When he woke up, he was so scared. Took him out and let him fly. Most amazing thing ever to hold that beautiful little guy and then see him fly off, ok and able to live his life. I'll never forget it. Happened in 1985 right after I was married.

For anyone who finds a hummingbird like this. The recipe is 4 parts water to 1 part sugar. First boil the water, remember to account for evaporation. After boiling the water, shut off the flame and mix the sugar. Stir well so all the sugar dissolves. Once the sugar dissolves let the water cool and reach room temp. Once cooled you can let the hummingbird have it. If you have a syringe like this person did that works. Just brace it against something so it's more stable. You don't need to put the birds entire beck in the tip. Just bring it close, it's tongue can do the rest.

Hummingbirds are such feisty little critters. It's really, really sad to see one at the very end of its tether - a hummingbird this still is on the edge of death. He was completely, totally exhausted (and badly dehydrated to boot). Very young one too - he was a juvie male, probably not long post-fledging.
You did a truly good thing here. One never knows what ripples may pass outward from what seems, on the surface, like a small act of decency. And the little birb recognized it! He wanted to be on your arm because he felt safe there, until his batteries were fully recharged and he was ready to move on.
Good. For. You. There's a special kind of grace in helping a powerless animal like you did. I wouldn't at all be surprised if you see this little guy again. Put up a hummingbird feeder, and you may end up with a new family of them!

I saved a hummingbird that couldn't fly and was trapped in the limestone dust of a parking lot. I captured him with my bare hands and took him home and nursed him for four hours then when he could fly, I released him. As he flew away I told him to visit soon. The next year and for the following 12 years, we have had swarms of hummers to the point that one feeder wasn't enough. We put up the "race track", seven feeders that wrapped around our tiny house and love every one that visits.
I was born able to relate to wild animals. My first saved wild creature was a white duck from a pond where my father was buried. I was four. I am almost sixty now and am unable to continue due to health issues but every day I think about the animals I saved, the ones I lost and the inspiration to others to do the selfless act of caring for what can't take care of itself. Blessings.

When her feeder needs more nectar, she flutters in place at the window for me to see her tell me this. She amazes me! I doubt I am the only human she has trained in this fashion! She is very territorial too! She will not let any other hummingbirds near 'her' feeder. I buy her a nice, new one every year with the features she seems to like the most, like perches. She actually likes to sit on a perch instead of flying in place to eat. I love her! I look forward to seeing her every spring.

This honestly made me light up seeing the recovery. You did a pretty big thing for that little guy (or gal). The things that really hits me though, is how the hummingbird actually flew to you, how it let you pick it up, and how it even sat on your arm and knuckles like a perch. Birds don't do that kind of thing unless they REALLY trust you. Birds won't perch in areas they feel unsafe in or don't trust. But you really had this little dude's heart and trust. That's simply amazing. Good job Will. This seriously made me proud.

I won a bird's trust once. It had been taken off the feeder by a magpie that started trying to eat its little head. I chased off the magpie and stuck around the little guy for a while until I could see that it was still alive, but I didn't try to touch it. I didn't want to scare it worse. After a while, it sort of collected itself, took a few deep breaths, and flew off, but after that, in the whole flock of birds that looked just like it, there was one that would stay on the feeder when I came outside. Didn't even care how hard the door closed. It just sat there on the feeder, watching me, and it had a little shock of feathers sticking up on the back of its head, right where the magpie had attacked. I named it Twitter, both for its chirps and for how social it seemed to be, and it always came back every summer.
Statistically I know that my last summer there, when it didn't come, it had probably died. They don't live that long. But a corner of my heart insists that if I go back to that house, I'll see Twitter sitting on the feeder watching me.

I believe all of the crazy wiggling and shaking was the hummingbird coming out of 'torpor'. Humming birds go into torpor at night or during times without a food source in order to conserve energy. The temperature of the hummingbird falls to match the temperature of the outdoors. Also the humming bird's heart rate drops to ~100 bpm (from a resting heart rate of over 1000 bpm during the daytime). @Commentator we have several feeders at my house, generally we make sugar water, boiling the sugar in water to melt it then stir it and store it in the fridge until the feeders need to be exchanged. I would advise against using any nectar with red dye in it, as the dye can often be harmful, despite being their favored color. Better to just get a red feeder.

I pull them all out...alive and dead. One morning my neighbor came over needing something as I was saving bees. He asked what I was doing, I told him. He shook his head and said I was crazy. I did the same thing this summer. Hummingbird had hit the window of Urban Outfitters on 35th street by Macy’s NYC. Hundreds of commuters walking by. I also walked past as it sat on the sidewalk. Then I turned back as it was certain to be stepped on being so tiny. Took the tiny little bird to my office and placed it in a coffee cup. Fed it sugar water through a straw. Closed the lid but left the lid open. Fed it more sugar water for a few hours. By lunchtime the bird was flapping away inside the coffee cup. At lunch time I took the bird I. Cup to Bryant park. Removed the lid. It looked around. Flapped it’s wings for a time. Then I tilted the cup and it flew into the trees. I felt great! 👍🏾👍
