There is tremendous flexibility in family medicine. Consider opportunities and fellowships in government (CIA, FDA, Regional Medical Officer) or specialized niches (wound care, hair transplant surgeon, occupational medicine, clinical informatics etc).
FM is crazy! Suture in AM, kick count at brunch, pull out foreign body in ear before lunch, check prostate after lunch, pap after, refill thyroid meds, prescribe fluoride late afternoon, and review colonoscopy results with grandma. LOVE IT!!!
I have no desire to be a doctor, but if I were to become one, I’d do family medicine. The flexibility and ability to know and do a bit of everything is something that’s very attractive and nothing to sneeze at.
A few things I would add: subspecialties of Family Medicine vary in their scope and responsibilities. 1) OB alone without complex cases or C-section privileges can be done with simply getting enough cases in residencies. C-sections often require either a fellowship or 40 primary C-sections being performed at a full spectrum Family Medicine program that caters to OB. 2) ER can be done without a fellowship, again with enough rotations in residency, but that often is only at lower acuity ERs in smaller cities, towns and in rural areas. I'm not sure if a fellowship would allow for jobs in larger ERs. 3) Local high school Sports medicine can be done without a fellowship, but all Professional and Olympic doctors are fellowship trained. 4) To my knowledge, Hospice and Geriatrics usually don't require fellowships. In essence, Family Medicine is a rubber band. The specialty is flexible as Family Docs must be capable to see every age and assist with many procedures in lower density areas like towns and rural areas. That said, if you find yourself in urban USA, you can easily focus on one aspect of medicine. In effect, few family doctors are true generalists anymore. OB-Peds, Adult, ER, Sports, Hospice, etc, all require specific skills and no doctor can manage them all BUT family doctors scope is broader (and as a necessary consequence not deeper) than most specialists. In terms of respect and prestige, its depends. As a PGY-3 in Family Medicine, I can honestly say that a good family doctor is respected. Patients do not seem to care about MD, DO or even PA, ARNP etc as long as they get good care. Obviously, prestige seems higher in surgical specialties (as does money), but at the end of the day that happiest docs love what they do and surround themselves with individuals who also value it. Working in underserved areas is a great way to gain that intrinsic value and communal engagement in your work. That said, patients may be more demanding of credentials or question you more if they are upper middle class (though I haven't seen that very much personally). For those considering family medicine, ask yourself if you like everything. If you want the option to do OB or ER in addition to other things. If you like to be the base of the healthcare system. We are often unsung heroes who don't receive the praise of MFM, Ortho or NICU, but who are truly the most valuable to healthcare. Hey ! I’m a pre-med interested in EM and FM. My concern was w/ the over saturation of EM physicians, the severely suffering job market, and the burnout. But the field is cool! I’m conflicted. To answer your question- yes this is possible.

I almost cried I was so happy you made this video. Fantastic profession, thanks for helping the information reach more people!
Could you make a "So you want to be an Optometrist" video? It's a great profession and may be a great alternative for those who are unsure about med school!
If Vin Diesel were a doctor, he wouldn't put up with the noncompliant ER patient.
Thanks i was waiting for a long time
If you’re not driven by competitiveness, Family medicine looks cool
Which specialty of FM does the most well salary wise?
What’s the difference between family medicine and internal medicine?
Internal medicine docs deal with adults while family medicine docs deal with the entire family including children, teens, adults, and seniors.
Along with the previous reply, the best comparison I've heard is IM is great inpatient, good outpatient. FM is great outpatient, good inpatient. This is in terms of general practice obviously not including subspecialties.
In Sweden family medicine residency is 5 years. The compensation is one of the highest among alla specialities making more money than a neurosurgeon .
Thumbnail itself is a best meme ever 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
can u do so you want to be aviation/aerospace medicine specialist?
Please make a video about difference between family medicine and internal medicine
Great idea!
Hematology/Oncology next?
Do “So you want to be a Pharmacist” next please!
Please do pediatric ICU doctor next. I know you did them individually, but I would like to see what the uniqueness of it is. I’m planning on that specialty for my career.
I wasn’t interested in family medicine until I worked in an FM office this summer! If I were to become an EM fam med doc, would it be possible to go back to clinic-like primary care after years in the ED? (I think EM is so cool, but I am concerned about the burnout rate)
Hey ! I’m a pre-med interested in EM and FM. My concern was w/ the over saturation of EM physicians, the severely suffering job market, and the burnout. But the field is cool! I’m conflicted.
To answer your question- yes this is possible.
Please do aviation medicine.
I wish I could find some kind of concrete step by step guide to becoming a family doctor. I feel like I have an idea, but it still feels like I am just guessing.
The thumb nail is 🔥 FAMILY
Why does Vin Diesel Lex Luthor want to be a family medicine doctor?
This video is sooooo inspiring!!! 🥰🥰🥰🥰 I wish family medicine would work like that in my country. We don't get to see FM doctors often. We go straight to spacialists. Because our health care system is not built for FM Doctors to be the first line of care and if they would do refferals if there is anything out of their hands...
Thank you MSI really grateful for this. Could you do a video on Haematology please?
The thumbnail got me so hard🤣🤣🤣
Hey Med School Insiders! I can't speak for everybody else, but I'm personally very interested in forensic pathology and becoming a medical examiner. I feel it's more of an unpopular branch of medicine and I was wondering if you guys could cover it in a video! Much love and thank you for all of your content
Forensic pathology is actually one of the most popular pathology subspecialties lol
Can you opt-out to not do obstetrics as a family med doctor
Can we talk about preventive medicine as well🤩
