Just had my first shadowing experience as a premed with a surgeon on their clinic day… completely eye opening in an amazing way to see how doctors work day to day
Never trust Reddit and stuff like that. When you shadow you will see for yourself. Dont let anyone discourage you but really know what the med field is like. U got this :)
@@28glitter lol fr reddit was wild so negative and mostly all came from money who never worked a day in their life life this or ever. I worked in a factory when I was 17 and scrubbed broilers....now that sucked in 101 degrees and tyvek suits
Love this look at Family Medicine--very accurate! I think you also got very lucky with your site. Your attending and staff sound stellar! The people you work with really make or break your experience. I, too, find myself exhausted after a day in Family Medicine and I need to recharge my introvert batteries. I definitely find myself unconsciously taking on my "customer service" persona in clinic (e.g. "Yes, hi, how can I help you today? ... I'd happy to help you with that" ✨) Something that often gets overlooked is how much mental health / therapy we do in primary care. Some days, you actually provide more therapy than overt medicine--which is so valuable because many people just want to feel heard and validated. I think introverts can thrive in Family Medicine if you love your fellows humans and take the time to recharge in solitude.
Aw this is amazing I can’t wait to start family med next after I finish peds! And that’s so great you had a great environment to work in, that makes such a big difference for learning. As always your cinematography is so on point and possibly the most creative I’ve seen on Med UA-cam!!
Family medicine is so underrated Idk how its like in America but in the UK, if you work smart, you can make a lot of money and have a lot more free time, flexibility than any of the hospitalists except perhaps radiology but even that has (on calls and emergencies to deal with) and in GO u can do plenty of different things ranging from minor plastic surgery all the way to moonlighting in urgent care centres and A&E. It's the best kind of doctor you can be in this climate of NHS funding cuts and dropping salaries. I'm in my final year of family medicine residency (we call it GP training)

Hey, Andy. A lot of eating. I was wondering how you'd respond to Family Med. My brother had a 4 decade+ career as a nationally-recognized family doc. I know the speciality and how it can create deep bonds of trust and commitment between physician and patients navigating the full spectrum of life. The grandma who told you that you'll be a great doctor is on to something. Congrats on completing this rotation and you continuing to share your experiences with your subscribers. What will you do if your next rotation has far less food? LOL!
I think it’s actually extroverted introvert. You’re essentially introvert but you developed extroversion as a social skill in expense of your “psyche energy”. It’s like passive transport vs active transport. But hey I ain’t no expert.
Family médecine in Norway is so far from 9-5. They do so insanely much more than every other doctor in the country. Working 60 hours a week is very normal!
Same in the Netherlands. I guess that in your country too the doc is part of the community and takes care of everything there. He carries the people in his town or neighbourhood.
Hi Andy! Thanks for the vlog! For residency of Family Medicine, how difficult is it? How many hours per week does a typical FM resident work? Also, do FM residents have to be on call? I'm a premed, and I'm just wondering. Thank you!
Varies by rotation & program. Most programs are frontloaded with inpatient training, so inpatient weeks can run anywhere from 60-80 hours. Increasingly your hours become less as you do more outpatient shifts (unless you choose to do more inpatient electives). I would say by 3rd year most residents are probably working closer to 40-50 hour weeks.
Hey! Keep up the good work! I hope one day I become like you this year I am starting my freshman year of high school and I'm really anxious if I will be able to study hard and get good grades so I can get in medical school in the future! Thanks for making our days better
Absolutely love the speciality rotation videos though i do miss the 73 questions (could u make a radiologist one? I aspire to be one) . And a small critique - do try to work on ur penmanship , ur patients and nurses wud love u for it. Keep doing wat u do. Waiting for more wholesome unfiltered content as this❤️

the amount of sauce on that salad! O.o A bit of olive oil and vinegar is enough. And you still peddle a low fat diet instead of a low sugar diet? USA has such a weird culture :)
As a patient who always makes sure to get to an 8 AM appointment at 8 AM and has always wondered why I still have to wait 45 minutes to see the doctor, now I know. The doc doesn't even show up until 8:45. It might help to realize that we, too, lead busy lives and we value our time as much as you value yours! In the future, please be more considerate.
I absolutely love when you go into something not expecting to even like it and all of a sudden you love it 💜 so nice to hear your experience with it
🧐
Totally get the "customer service" feeling. Too exhausting for me! Family Med docs are the real heroes
I came across someone saying that medicine is “glorified customer service”. Some specialties serve directly the patient, and some other doctors.
That says a lot if this is a rotation where you’re able to take care of yourself. Especially mentally! Great to see you post again!
I need to stay off of Reddit…they make me not wanna be a doctor but when I watch your videos my mind changes 😭 I need to start shadowing ASAP
Omg same lol

yeah, I thought so too. When you recharge best in solitude, you're an introvert.

While I think that surgery is the coolest things ever and would seem like a super hero job, family medicine really attracts me.
You also do some surgical procedures in family medicine.
Thank you for your service
definitely in between family and orthopaedics but family is my top choice!
love your videos Andy, you're such a great guy
You should do a 73 Questions with a Family Med doc 😉
I love being nurse and one of the top 10 is having a PJ on all day :P
That seems like such a fun and educational experience!!!! I hope to be in your shoes one day. Though, I am only a Sophomore in high school.
What's the name of that ultrasound in your phone ? Is it expensive ?

P.S. I'm waiting for your dermatology rotation
He does not belong in dermatology . UA-camr Kaur Beauty does.
😂 I hear you about the ‘customer service performance’ in primary care medicine.
Finally a new video 🤠

Can you tell how much does an average family physician earn working in outpatient dept of a hospital (in Canada)?
man i had that same feeling of being tired after just a half day of clinic. thinking fm but yeah i feel that too so iddkk
