The Issue with Philodendron El Choco Red

  • How to propagate Philodendron El Choco Red? I will be taking a top cutting as well as some more stem cuttings. The plant has issues with unfurling leaves and potentially root rot. In each Houseplant collection there are plants that kinda act out. I airlayered it with Sphagnum moss beforehand to have the best possible chance at success. I did propagate many Monstera, Pothos, Anthurium and other indoor plants before but never such a thicc stemmed Philodendron. Wish me luck !
    Enjoy ♥

Hi, just in case this helps anyone with ripped leaves due to improper unfurling:
I don't have an El Chocó. But, I've had the same problem with a White Bird of Paradise. I tried steam, changes on light, humidity, reporting, etc.
At last I found the issue is due to lack of enough water absorption. This may be through a damaged root system (not my case), or too chunky soil in combination with less watering than the plant requires ✔️.
The above, seems to be consistent with your particular issue.
Additionally, El Chocó is a jungle region between Colombia and Ecuador. I'm Colombian. That particular rainforest is absurdly hot and it rains constantly there. I think it may rain more there than in the Amazon.
So, you may try an aeroid mix with a bit more coconut bark to retain more moisture, or perhaps a plastic pot, or increase the water frequency.
I know this is an old video, but I hope this helps.

OMG! I have EXACTLY the same issue with my plowmanii! It gets stuck in exactly the same way and even rips at the same spot of the leaf😫 I assumed it was a humidity issue so I propagated it and put the well rooted new plant in my detolf cabinet. It just put out another leaf and the SAME thing happened🤦 It could still be that I haven't quite figured put the watering this plant needs, so If I try to prop it again I'll try a semi-hyro substrate ( its been in a chunky soil and fern fiber mix) I LOVE What this plant is supposed to look like, so I'm totally determined to figure this guy out🤔

    • @LeafyLuster

Ahhh that sucks... I really hope there is a way to fix the plant, for You & Me. I think watering is for sure important too, but that your plant is ripping even in a cabinet is really weird. I would have thought that high humidity fixes everything. Plowmanii are so beautiful though 😍.

@@LeafyLuster I would've thought so too! I still do think I need to figure out the exact substrate and watering that it needs. There are a few other signs that water could be part of the issue, so I'm definitely working on that. 🤞🤞

I got two stuck leaves on my scindapsus last week and I just sort of cut along the sheath (w a needle) like a banana and they came out fine lol
Also whenever I get new plants in compacted soil or those crappy little net baskets inside them, I dip the roots in a bucket of water until most of it comes loose.

Very nice, glad you were able to save them! I tried something similar with a scalpel on my choco and I managed to get like 2 leaves that were ok. But honestly, sometimes I don't notice the new leaf coming in until it is already too late to help 🙈. The tip with flushing the soil is actually suuuper smart. I definetly should try that out in the future, thank you for the tips! 💚

My El Choco Red doesn't do this (but my Pink Princess definitely does!) My El Choco Red is growing in lechuza pon, at about 65-70% humidity in my grow tent. I have another one in chunky aroid soil, and the one in pon definitely grows faster and looks healthier - maybe give pon a try if those other substrates don't work out!

I used to get annoyed with my El Choco Red. I exposed it to grow lights and the plant hated it. I gave it low, medium light. It was still not happy. I was almost ready to give it away when I finally found a spot for it to thrive in. It is on the floor between a shelf with grow lights and a window with ambient humidity. It is also growing in pon in a self watering pot.

Wow thank you so much much for all this detailed insight. I'm learning so much from the comment section about this plant. It seems that self watering or semi hydro is the way to go with this plant. I have one cutting in perlite/semi hydro and one in just water. They do really well in there. I haven't figured out the perfect light yet, the experience you shared really helps me consider the perfect spot for it.

Thank you for this video! I was having a very similar problem with my el choco and so I decided to check the roots (they were actually, ok), and then I chopped the “stump/chonk” up into a “top cutting”, and 2 big pieces off of the bottom that each ended up having their own pretty nice root system. I put them in sphagnum moss and in a clear container and covered it with cling wrap and put it under my growlights in my milsbo cabinet. So far, the top cutting is growing a new leaf spike, and one of the 2 rooted chonks has 3 (that I can see so far, so maybe more!!) new growth points/axillary buds that are budding!! The larger of the 2 chonks doesn’t look to be doing anything yet, but it’s only been a few weeks. Seeing you do almost the exact same thing, and having just gone on instinct myself, I am now feeling much more confident that I did it right! I may take the piece that isn’t doing anything out of the moss and try it in perlite to see if that speeds up new growth. It was very interesting seeing your process and I am really looking forward to an update! How are your babies doing??

    • @LeafyLuster
      @LeafyLuster  2 роки тому

Honestly, reading YOUR story with the El choco I am relieved as well . Sometimes I do things a little impulsively but I think it was the right decision too. I'm just glad I finally checked the roots and noticed how bad they were 😅. I'm happy you feel a little better noch. Definetly try perlite it really works best for me. You can check the Updates on the props here: ua-cam.com/video/TQ7sDpOCgWs/v-deo.html . By now the big chonk in perlite has unfurled 2 new leaves and a 3rd one is coming. It's getting tight in the little propbox 😁. With your Milsbo cabinet + lights your plants should be fine even without the plastic container eventually, right ?
