Coaching is being there physically. Takes more than being around to be there for a child. Plenty of people who don’t have the luxury of millions of dollars from a sport to be able to have the time to coach all those things, are still there. Public eye doesn’t mean role model.

Great convo,I see what marcellus is saying and agree. But Lavar said the truth in that that is not the reality. There are kids who simply are not going to relate to parents,or will resent their parents for trying to parent. This is genetics and astrology we are talking about here. Sure you can force the child to listen out of fear but what kind of adult will you end up with once they are 18 lol.

THE thing that Marcellus doesn't understand is that the players are in the lime light... If they don't want to be looked at as role models, then they need to stop doing interviews / commercials and being thrust out there for all the kids to see... The fact they are put front and center means they are the ones projecting "their" image to the kids in those instances... Regardless of how they really are, when they are in the limelight and how they act is what the kids see... SO yeah, if Charles Barkley, or any other athlete doesn't want to be looked at / considered a role model, then stay out of the limelight and quit promoting yourself / your brand... They love all the money they make from the kids buying their merchandise and going to their games, yet they don't care enough to want to be looked up to and set a good example... That is basically what Marcellus is saying... SAD, but true...

Being a role model was always an option and opportunity that you could accept or reject. The idea that you had to be a role model as an athlete has always been a control idea that was motivated by jealousy and envy of the common background that black athletes had. Grew up lower income, to later get to a position to make a lot of money to do something millions can't but would love to also do.
White athletes who rejected being a role model have always been left alone, free of criticism unless they did something really negative, and sometimes even complimented by labeling them "quiet a character".
Now, lets flashback to that footage of wiley saying that Kaepernick was too light skinned to be in the role model position.
    Roll it!!
