So true!!! It is not said enough on social networks, nature is never a copy/paste, two plants in the same conditions and with the same care will not grow the same, nor at the same speed. It is possible that one prefers more light than the other, that one is more resistant to lack of humidity, etc. This is the beauty of nature! Great video, good content, I want to mention that you deserve more likes for all the work that it must be to film small follow-ups at X-Y times over the course of a year or more, for several plants. It is a big job in the long term, I love this type of follow-up that you do. I think people don't realize how much time, editing and other work goes into this and I wanted to highlight that. 💛🇨🇦 Edit : I am jealous of Brad 🦁, my cat bites plants randomly just because, she has one available then no prefers to go bite my favorite plants. I do not have any toxic plants for this reason, the cat does not manage🥲
Hi Jan, I'm a molecular biologist (I study human genetics, not plants) but I can definitely shed some light on this. The fact that your adonsonii is split down the middle with one half of every leaf unaffected and the other half being affected, points almost certainly to genetic chimerism. It's pretty much impossible to have an environmental factor or infectious agent only affect one side of a plant like this. Chimerism is widespread in nature, and happens when different parts of an organism inherit different alleles, genes, or genetic defects, leading to differing phenotypes. For example, it's surprisingly common to see chimeric cats whose fur is half black, half brown, split down the middle. This is caused by the fusing of two zygotes during embryogenesis, each having alleles encoding different fur colour. Another example is that all females are functionally chimeras, as they have two X chromosomes. At random, one X chromosome is silenced in early embryogenesis in different parts of the body, leading to each area having differing genes. There is a good Veritasium video on this topic! Anyway, it's clear that one side of your plant has a mutation (or potentially many mutations or other genetic defect) that was inherited by one side and not the other. This isn't to say that all variegation occurs this way, but for this particular specimen, I'm positive this is the case.
I love seeing the progression of your plants and how you take us through each phase of it! I'm learning a lot! In regards to the different names of plants, I would agree with you, and it makes it difficult/ confusing for someone just starting to get into the world of aroids.
Your approach is so practical, Jan. A good reminder to skip tying ourselves into knots to adapt to a plant that's not doing well in our environment. Easier said than done, tho (at least in my case). Thanks always for the excellent progress reports ; I know those take energy and organization. We appreciate it!
I love videos like these that are filmed over a long period of time. I think that makes it particularly exciting to watch. Thank you for your effort, I really appreciate it, because videos like this definitely take up a lot of time. but it's worth it! happy growing💚
I'm actually currently growing a very large adansonii albo variegata. it's about 2 meters high on a moss pole and the leaves are now bigger than my hand and they keep getting bigger. i'm so excited to see where it goes.
I was shocked when you uploaded this video with the name of the plant and "12 months of growth".... I remember when you first showed us this plant and it feels like it is just two months ago. Time is rushing. I´m watching your channel now for a year and a half, I think? And I´m thrilled for every video!
I just got 3 mint adansonii juveniles maybe 2 weeks ago and they’re all giving new tiny leaves! I’ve put them in LECA and when they get big enough, I’ll give them a moss pole. This was great information so I know what to look out for. Thanks Jan and Bradles! 💜💚
JAN!!!! I AM wigging out right now seeing you pop up on a video of Plant and Style With Peachy at the IAS Expo in Miami!! You were so kind and welcoming which I was sooo happy to see! Peachy is one of my top favs along with you, The Leca Queen, Wild Fern, and Lee of Kill This Plant! I know it's totally unrelated to this video but I just have to say thank you for being a kind and gracious human to another plant youtuber! I think you'll like her channel if you check it out💚🌿
I love the look of the adansoniis that are popular in Indonesia with their huge fenestrations. I've been waiting for them to be available in Australia and it annoys me so much that it seems the only one we can get yet is this sick-looking variegated version. The green ones are beautiful. I love that the deformation caused by the variegation is at least decreasing. The roots on the pole look great ... I'm very keen to see how it does in future outside and I love your detailed videos about your journeys with plants.
Brad is such a cutie boy! I love when he pops up! Thank you for making all of the videos. I'm slowly going through all of them and rewatching the plant spotlights for the plants I acquired. I would never have cobsidered buying a pothos and putting it on a pole, but your manjula is stunning! I'm going to try it with manjula and N'joy
I was just taking an extra long moment to admire my philodendron painted lady a couple days ago. I got it for myself for my birthday in 2021 and it’s grown so tall! I have it on a support pole rather than a moss pole, so it’s probably not even as big as it could be lol. But I really love the shape of the leaves and the growth pattern 🥰 And the unique type of variegation is a cherry on top! My particular painted lady grew through the start and duration of my 2 year relationship, which ended difficultly in march this year. But I’ve still got this beautiful plant that I nurtured all that time 😌 …and just over a hundred others that I also love 😅😂
Your indonesian marble looks different than mine, or maybe it is just a matter of showing plant on camera. Mine has long narrow leaves with much of variegation. The beauty of nature - even "the same" plant can look different 😍
I have a regular adensonii that I've been trying to caox to live for 9 months. It remains lackluster and has grown maybe 2 inches with 4 leaves over that time. I have tried various spots but jot a lot makes a difference. Seeing this though gives me hope that perhaps it just grows slow in my care and I need just keep giving it love. Thanks as always for your great content. Hugs to Brad!
Mine live outside in Houston Tx, gets morning indirect sunlight, lives under my tree. No fertilizer just unchlorinated water. Loves rainwater. I've had them for years.❤
I’ve got a similar one to this from a woman who has very rare plants but the name was so long I already forgot it. It’s very thin with a very nice silverish and white variegation inbetween the green. It’s growing well in pon and I’ll let her climb up a moss wall see what it does. She’s definitely the rarest plant I’ve ever seen.
There is confusion between the European mint and the Indonesian mint. People tend to lump them all I'm one basket but I think it was the European one that was suspected mosaic virus. I don't know what the outcome was of that controversy but it definitely wasn't confirmed when the rumors started spreading like wildfire and mixing the Indo reputation with it.
I imported mine from Thailand and it was labeled as Adansonii Indo Mint. It looks very similar to yours. The variegated sections are much smaller and kind of warp the leaves. I still think it looks cool as that just makes it unique! Also for other’s info, I just have mine on a wooden stake for now and it seems to be sizing up quickly enough (for me lol, maybe not for Jan!)
10:10 I'm so glad you said that. 🤣 I usually can't get anything to stay in there, so I just end up with a bit of empty space and a few loose strands of sphagnum hanging down. It doesn't seem to affect the structural soundness of the pole and a bit of empty space is probably fantastic for oxygenation.
Thank you for such a thorough and friendly presentation! I love that you know what you want and how to get it from your plants. I'm 3 years into my plant journey and I'm honing in on my style now that I've got care more or less covered. Things always come up... But I've got planty people like you to turn to! 💚
That was the case with my Epi Albo as well. When it was juvenile it was perfect, then went into its awkward teenage faze with funky leaves, and finally moved on to perfect mature leaves every time…love the videos Jan 🙌🏼🤙🏼
Excellent video, Jan! Thank you for all your time and energy making 'useful' content. I agree that botanical naming can be very confusing. I don't waste time with banter about said names, but go to good resources (like yours 😉) for useful information regarding care techniques. I made 2 more moss poles today, one for a Monstera delicosa alba for my daughter and a Philodendron Majesty cutting for me. I've enjoyed the whole moss pole making and care thus far. Easy peasy with your instructions! 😅
Another great vid but OG Adansonii ftw. My variegated one is still in pieces, it just cant stay nice. Hope you’re having tonnes of fun in Miami. So many of my fave planty people in your pictures. Can’t wait for more content!!!! So excited.
I agree about the arguing on what the plant actually is lol. If I enjoy the plant that’s what actually matters vs what its name is. I have so many plants where I forgot what the names are although I’ve labeled all of them now, but people care about how it looks vs what its name is
Archipelago Adansonii leaves will start white & cream colored with a green vein down the center, then turn green as they're shaded with newer growth above. Totally different than the Mint. Whatever you have though, it's gorgeous!
If you're going to stick it outside over summer, and not in the greenhouse, see how it goes with a tray underneath. I use trays for ALL my outside plants over summer. 🌞💜💚💜🐨🇦🇺
Sad to have not gone to IAS to meet you! For some reason adansonii hates me. I could probably manage now. Just got a tri-color cutting from a friend, I haven’t tried growing one in 2 years despite having like 250+ other aroids haha.
I have a regular Mons. adansonii growing up a moss pole. She is big and beautiful and I love it. I'm sure that you will get this variegated kind to look awesome soon. It looks nice now, but variegation is not really my preference. 🌿🌱🐱
I wish I was chemically induced about now🤣😂. When you go to Miami you will be lol. I have always loved growing plants any kind, I been growing plumerias they are so beautiful their big leaves and beautiful great smelling flowers. Well, then I found your channel. And guess what I’m doing now?? MOSS POLES, ANTHURIUMS, PHILODENDRONS. So I have all little baby plants right now so all is fine. But I’m going to be in big trouble as my babies become teenagers because I live with people that think plants are a nuisance. And the sad thing is the house is a huge home and we have the whole back of the house with ceiling to floor windows wrapped around the pool. So this place is perfect for growing a jungle 🤣😂. Well wish me luck and hopefully me & my plants don’t get kicked out. I might have to move in with you & Kitty.
So cool video! My variegated adansoni is such a brat has died and revived several times, considering I live in Costa Rica, idk why it has been so hard to grow 😂 bad luck or bad plant gen 🧬 😂
The mint is a strange one. I have 3 on a moss pole and they're beautiful. Fully formed leaves with random mint and creamy splash variegation, and they grow super fast! Mutant or chemical doesn't matter to me because I have a few of the good ones and I payed $40 for them 🙂
Idk how the mint variegation is achieved, but I have noticed both my adonsonii and epipremnum mints look kinda deformed, with wrinkly odd shaped fenestrations and definitely haven't grown as quickly sizing up as my plain green or albo variegated plants.??? 😻
the taxonomy ends on Monstera adansonii, everything else is just marketing (mint, variegated, albo, whatever). Variegation is a messy topic. Pretty in green put out a video talking about the subject of how variegation is artificially produced. He doesn't go into chemically induced variegation, only gamma radiation, which I find odd because mutagenisis from chemical treatment is not an uncommon method of producing "new" plants (mutagenesis alters the DNA, some chemical variegation only occurs so long as the chemical is provided, does not alter DNA). To each their own, this adonsonni is too scraggly looking for me😂 BUT I've had my store bought plane Jane for three years now and she's looking no where as good as this. So I can't talk because I clearly screwed the pooch somewheres along the line😅
If radiation creates a mutation it is no different than a mutation coming from pure randomness and artificial selection. Every biologist knows that, this is gmo debate all over again. If we end up getting new strains using CRISPR will people argue on the legitimacy of them? Nonetheless I agree with your take that variegation is overrated on this plant anyway. Impressive results as always you are a wizard at growing plants!
Must say, I'm not in love with this plant. The deformed mangled looking variegations spoil it for me, but there's hope in the new leaves. 🤞 Seems to be fairly common fault from what I can find online.
also i feel you with the adansonii - i dont want to buy another because the one i had did fine, but i broke it to use as trading plants and the one cutting i kept i ruined putting in an aquarium lol - personally i like the esqueleto because of how much larger it can get! im planning on purchasing one from a marketplace seller, hoping ill get more enjoyment from it's growth rather than the smaller (even the wider form like yours) dont impress me as much
I don't like this plant looks tacky. I guess to each their own. I don't like the frustration and the leaf texture. Just looks like they're struggling and shriveling. I prefer the monstera adansonii. Especially the one you grew so big. I've started from a to my little cuttings it's getting bigger but another 2 yrs 😅. But the satisfaction tho
So true!!! It is not said enough on social networks, nature is never a copy/paste, two plants in the same conditions and with the same care will not grow the same, nor at the same speed. "Not all plants, not all cuttings will have the same desire to live"
That made me chuckle^^
Love how Brad is just calmly loafing at the side while Jan is so passionately agitated about names 😹
😂😂
Love these "update" videos! The showing of the path of the plants gives me hope for when my plants throw fits and become challenging. Thank you again!
Glad they are helpful :)
I appriciate the long term commitment it takes to produce this kind of content! Thank you!!
Thanks :) appreciate it !!

Зашла к этому красавчику только, чтобы поставить 👍🏻. Сейчас смотреть нет времени, посмотрю позднее, но лайк - это святое! ❤
Thanks for the support :)
I love how cats always have to clean themselves after a touching moment with humans. Love your adansonii
Haha right ?! :D
Your videos are so uplifting. Gracias GALÁN 😊

He's the boss !!
I’m loving it, including the wild look. Leave her and see what becomes of her beauty.

I love all your regular spotlight plants and I've learned so much from you. It's nice to see you post about something new though. Thank you 😊
Brad is a basket case ❤. Hi Jan!
The journey of this beauty has been 👌,without caring too much about the proper name looks amazing!!
💚🌿🌵🍀💚
Thank you for all tge hard work you do Jon
Thank you:)
Great video I do love the way it looks too
Thank you:)
😺🌻 Blocking away side of your greenhouse might be really good idea! Looking forward to the next update
What substrate did you use please?
Commenting for the engagement ❤
Great video like always
Appreciate it :)
🌿 looks amazing✨
Never mind all the fuzz added from naming it .the thing is you have it,you love it ,you care for it ,and she x 2 looking 👌
💚🌿🍀🌵💚
Exactly 🙌🙌
Another great vid but OG Adansonii ftw. My variegated one is still in pieces, it just cant stay nice. Hope you’re having tonnes of fun in Miami. So many of my fave planty people in your pictures. Can’t wait for more content!!!! So excited.
Thank you:)

I have an esqueleto attached and growing on my wall outside. It took a while for it to he acclimated to this intense heat
Archipelago Adansonii leaves will start white & cream colored with a green vein down the center, then turn green as they're shaded with newer growth above. Totally different than the Mint. Whatever you have though, it's gorgeous!
Precicely my point … people just throw names out there without knowing what they are talking about … 😂😂
If you're going to stick it outside over summer, and not in the greenhouse, see how it goes with a tray underneath.
I use trays for ALL my outside plants over summer. 🌞💜💚💜🐨🇦🇺
Great video Jan! Will we be seeing an IAS video soon?😊
Next week :)!
Give her some steam!
Jan: Excuse me
Brad: Excuse you
Sad to have not gone to IAS to meet you! For some reason adansonii hates me. I could probably manage now. Just got a tri-color cutting from a friend, I haven’t tried growing one in 2 years despite having like 250+ other aroids haha.
Maybe next year :) happy growing :)
Decades ago I heard the; sleep, creap, leap, rule. It was about clematis in particular but pointed out that most vines can be this way
Yes ao true!! I think it applies to many :)
Nice vidio!
Thanks :)
I have a regular Mons. adansonii growing up a moss pole. She is big and beautiful and I love it. I'm sure that you will get this variegated kind to look awesome soon. It looks nice now, but variegation is not really my preference. 🌿🌱🐱
Yeah my normal green adansonii is one of my faves of all time!!
I wish I was chemically induced about now🤣😂. When you go to Miami you will be lol. I have always loved growing plants any kind, I been growing plumerias they are so beautiful their big leaves and beautiful great smelling flowers. Well, then I found your channel. Vèry nice
So cool video! My variegated adansoni is such a brat has died and revived several times, considering I live in Costa Rica, idk why it has been so hard to grow 😂 bad luck or bad plant gen 🧬 😂
Yeah i think it’s just bad genes tbh 🫣
Adansoni Monstera is indigenous to Mexico.❤
What is the mix you use??
I've tried to do soil-less mix..but it failed.
I have 2 Adonsonii lol..spelling
Check out my potting mix tutorial linked in the description
Found it..thanks 😊
The mint is a strange one. I have 3 on a moss pole and they're beautiful. Fully formed leaves with random mint and creamy splash variegation, and they grow super fast! Mutant or chemical doesn't matter to me because I have a few of the good ones and I payed $40 for them 🙂
As long as it looks good!! That’s the most important hehe:)
Yea I noticed mine wouldn’t stop giving me ugly funky leaves until like the 8th leaf and now it’s starting to look kind of normal
🤞🤞
It is known to us here as M. adansonni indo mint.
Idk how the mint variegation is achieved, but I have noticed both my adonsonii and epipremnum mints look kinda deformed, with wrinkly odd shaped fenestrations and definitely haven't grown as quickly sizing up as my plain green or albo variegated plants.??? 😻

If radiation creates a mutation it is no different than a mutation coming from pure randomness and artificial selection. Every biologist knows that, this is gmo debate all over again. If we end up getting new strains using CRISPR will people argue on the legitimacy of them?

People just love to argue! They will never stop 😂 meanwhile I’m just gonna enjoy this hobby :)
Must say, I'm not in love with this plant. The deformed mangled looking variegations spoil it for me, but there's hope in the new leaves. 🤞 Seems to be fairly common fault from what I can find online.
I love how you don't give a f*ck. That's how it should be
it's just a plant :) no need to take it too seriously right
You are so handsome ❤
Hehe thanks :)
I have around 20 of un varieagated adansoni monsteras.😂 They grow everywhere.
Holy cow lots of commercials to watch before I could see this video. Ugh!! Did I tap the wrong button that I couldn’t skip them? Sorry Jan!
The ads leading up to the video are out of my control … i think YT is probably pushing ppl to get YT premium 😬
Maybe your plant is in dormitory now! You never know! Like the video tho
Thanks :)!
"todays victim" lol
also i feel you with the adansonii - i dont want to buy another because the one i had did fine, but i broke it to use as trading plants and the one cutting i kept i ruined putting in an aquarium lol - personally i like the esqueleto because of how much larger it can get! im planning on purchasing one from a marketplace seller, hoping ill get more enjoyment from it's growth rather than the smaller (even the wider form like yours) dont impress me as much
Ciao
this variegated monstera may have a virus.
the variegation only hinted at and this "tired" demeanor.
always disinfect if you use scissors...
