Jan, you are a great educator, showing us the arc of each plant's journey from purchase to date, hitting all the factors that go into growing houseplants. I really appreciate the effort to string clips together to tell a story. Thanks from Seattle
Loved the "journey" videos! And I've started to try to find smaller and smaller plants to watch them grow up in my care., hopefully. I find it very rewarding and educational! 😅
Beautiful plants. Happy to see Frydek made it out alive. I do think those particular TC babies are just way more finicky until they're through that first full season. An accomplishment deserving a ⭐. Cheers to your upcoming spring growth!😻
That Frydek is actually looking great 12 months later. Frydek is actually the easiest Alocasia in all of my collection. Grow s faster and keep producing corms that are variegated as well. Overall this plant update is good 💯❤️
This was a really enjoyable & encouraging video. Brad popping nearby you are always a treat to see. My eyes would go to the plants you’re introducing, then to Brad, then back to you. Love it. For me, Its a real struggle to keep any alocasia striving in aroid mix, but It is the best natural medium to use and Ill perfect my methods just as you have done. I can tolerate the stress for just a bit longer because they give me joy to look at when they’re at their best.
Hey Jan, I stressed the same way about my Frydek at first. I work at a plant nursery and I was reminded by all of the horticultural people that alocasias go dormant in winter..I put my Frydek under grow lights and he is in semi-hydro and he is one happy guy..
@@Keeponsmiling60 I removed as much soil as I could and put him in water for about a week then put him in pon. He did drop most of his leaves. However after about two weeks I have had nothing but big beautiful new growth.
I just put mine in PON as I was losing leaves. I also bought some new grow lights, going to do what you did. edit: I also have a little humidifier near my Frydek with some other plants. I thought I would lose more leaves in the process of replanting it in the Pon, but didn't lose any and now I have a new leaf a couple of weeks later.
I really agree with what you said about “enjoying the journey” as the end results are now plants that have outgrown my space! I’m thinking of making my next growing season TC plants. Thanks for sharing your planty journey Jan!
My alocasia frydek variegated is crazy, I keepit in pon, outside in Netherlands, and it just grows, and even the corms grow, I got one bushy alocasia now.
The struggle is real with some of these plants! And I love my luxurian, I had three leaves on it. Don’t know what’s going on but it down to two leaves that may have been a fungal issue, not sure. I’m still trying to figure that out but love love love that Luxe. Could you do a video about spotting and treating fungal and bacterial disease and the difference between the two?
I had similar drooping problems with a variegated alocasia and I think it was bending to get away from the light. You can see in your updates how light the green parts of the leaves were, whereas the reshoots at the end are that typical dark frydeck color. I think when they get too much light they start to suffer even though they're variegated.
Beautiful 🤩😍 Might be time for some new treats. You definitely deserve it! I think Brad wants you to get some more baby tissue cultures, and you're going to need one of those sexy low Ikea cabinets to put them in. 🤗
I am not having luck with my Variegated Frydeks. I bought one and the leaves started to die back within a week, a month later they are all gone except one who is one its way out. The corm looked good and I repotted it in PON a couple of days ago since I heard good things about it. I hope it starts to regrow. In the meantime, I bought another one and I planted that one in PON too. Hope they will start to do well.
Alocasias are a beautiful genus of plants that I appreciate from afar because left in my care and growing conditions, they all ended up dead!!! 😆 It's okay, I have other plants that thrive in my care 😊
Odora is much easier to care for than frydek. I would liken the frydek more to the care of "jewel" alocasias, like the cuprea you got in the background. Like to be kept moist but not too moist, as they will tip over, induce rot and waterspotting/edema on the leaves. I find lechuza pon to hold too much water for them to thrive, better to mix it up with perlite or choose other grow medium. If kept in very high humidity (90-100%) they tend to be very easy to grow as they won't grow alot of roots that have the potential for rot and can easily be grown in pure spaghnum!
Hi, great plants. I was wondering if water retention crystals could be sprinkled over the centre of the spagnum moss when first putting the moss on the poles. That way, the moss would stay moist for longer. I live in Darwin NT and the moss dries so so fast.
Anthurium luxurians absolutely does not need to be kept in the cabinet, it is like a snake plant of anthurium world, the most hardy anthurium that can handle the widest range of environments. I keep mine on my work desk, in a dark corner and it grows beautiful leaves. So if you run out of space in your cabinet, do not be scared to transition it outside it.
My frydek has been putting out an almost aurea variegation very yellow cream variegation unlike the first couple leaves. It’s only been apparent in the last two leaves it’s put out and they don’t fade to a lighter white. Any thoughts?
I had 3 Alocasia variegated frydreks that were about the same size as yours but they were living in Pon (and doing really well), b then I went to the beach for 3 weeks and decided to take them with me as I didn't have anyone to water them. I put them in plastic storage container and replicated the conditions, etc., and they all died back completely. I'm convinced they are drama queens. I bet your move upset them. Even the brief time it spent moving, was enough to kill it back.
I am giggling here that you have 12 months of growth on alocasias when you regularly post your lack of love for them. Have you ever tried fluval stratum. I put all my babies and corms in that. It seems to keep them at the perfect moisture with self watering pots

Do you grow it with a grow light or by the window? How far away? I just bought by 2nd one and hoping it will not die back.

Always love watching the plants develop over time 😀🇨🇦
Thanks:)
i have 2 frydek, green and variegated. super easy to me. i put one in pon and did not complain at all, grew even happier

When you transferred your Frydek to semi hydro, how did you do it
+1 for semihydro! It makes alocasias so much easier to care for.

Hey, I know way too little about that to make a video about it, sorry :)
Awesome update Jan...waiting for the Luxurians price to come down a bit more and then I'm grabbing one 👍🏼 Yours is looking great and healthy 😃
This is what I've been waiting for! The lil TC babies growing up!
Can’t wait for year 2🙌

I just got a Luxurians from Flora magnifica last week and they are still $99. Always come so well packed and healthy!!
The packaging is second to none 🙌
@@sydneyplantguy totally agree, great service all round. I plan to go up in person one day soon, they are about a 90 minute drive from me.
Interesting. Beautiful plants
Love seeing the progress over the year. Nice video Jan 🪴
Thank you:)
I think you may have just saved 6 itty bitty baby plants that arrived in the mail and I had no idea how to care for. Thank you!!
Happy growing :)

Perlite with Frydeks is the key
Great updates! It's so rewarding to see the small plants grow. Did you fertilizer the plants throughout the year, or just growing season?
I fertilise weakly weekly year around :)
7th this time ! im getting quicker at this haha, love your videos fam

You are not the only one!!:P thanks :)
I am on my 2nd one too.
Brad is running down the stairs like I'm coming. I'm not late 😂 he is so gorgeous. Just wondering where you get all the baby plants from? Thanks Jan 😊
They are from Flora Magnifica :) a perth based small nursery :)

I haven’t decided yet … it’s quite far :/

I’m pretending my Alocasia Dragon is an Anthurium Luxurians till I can actually find a reasonably priced one here in Dubai 😅
😅😅 love that attitude !!!
Didn't he say he wasn't going to buy frydacks anymore lol
It’s still the same one… so no I didn’t buy it again :P
is that plant to your right my left on the screen an artificial plant? It doesn't look real
No they are all real :)
I know Luxurians are coveted, but I'm not into this look- reminds me of the Thing (Fantastic 4) x Incredible Hulk. 🤣
