    Hello from Paris ! Many thanks for that uncommon subject.
    One musn't forget those rare, but not expensive plants : gesneriaceae, hoffmannia, etc., sometimes also easy to grow.
    Affordable, just because people don't know them 😊
    Make your own searches (it's part of the pleasure of a true collector)

    Thank you for showing both the beautiful side of the plants as well as the financial side of plants! I’m sure it’ll help many of us decide what plants to purchase!
    I completely agree with Mr Sean on the last point on how common plants can in fact be our source of happiness and peace. Thus, I highly suggest that people just buy plants they prefer best instead of following absurd trends and rules that others want to impose on.

    As a former banker and orchid grower, I highly recommend buying low selling high. Joining a garden club is the cheapest and best way to get plants. It makes no sense to pay these prices because prices will come down and they propagate much faster than large orchid specimens.

    • @onlyplants
      @onlyplants  Місяць тому +4

    A few weeks ago I went to a plant fair and saw a beautiful & big yellow/light green monstera Thai Con I had never seen before that was half the price of the Albo he had on the table for double the size ($200 AUD over $400AUD). He originally brought it to see if it would sell but also to gauge if anyone would buy a very yellow monstara. I was the only person who asked about it and because my Husband forgot my wedding anniversary which was that day, I bought it for myself out of spite & because it was something different. It was tagged as Monstera Villa (though I assume this is a temporary name or might be what they called it as I cannot find it online anywhere) but I was told it was one that came with his regular Thai order as a random variant of the plant that was a aurea hybrid (unsure if true). Whatever the case it's absolutely gorgeous & has two new buds growing since I got it and just stands out amongst my regular Thais & Monsteras as something really incredible. I don't plan on profiting off it, though I am doing a prop swap with a friend who has a mint monstera I want to attempt growing - I'm too afraid to get a regular varigated aurea or mint that will either revert or go all yellow/mint and die that way as my lighting all year around isn't stable (I live in Australia btw, so importing plants is a very strictly controlled thing here, and seeing this plant was a shock because frankly most variations we see of monsteras will never wind up here) but I'm just excited it's loving my house along with my other monsteras. I hope to see more of them for people to buy as it's just a beautiful plant being lime green/yellow with the cream speckles/sectorals of the Thai & makes a great statement plant. If there's is ever a mint Thai that comes out & is affordable or I luck out like I did here I'll be all over it as monsteras just absolutely love my house more than any other plant😊

The topics that you present to us in this video are really interesting as always, the truth is that it is good to know how finances work in the world of plants, since I grow and trade with some species of plants. Greetings and congratulations because with these topics many people maintain interest in your channel and many will subscribe to your channel.

    I agree entirely, and I am another one of those people who 'can wait' for a plant I would really like and really doesn't care about what is trendy. A lot of my plants are grown from rescue cheap or free plants that looked terrible at a plant shop, or even from broken off branches on the floor of a nursery. I would take a well-grown 'regular' plant over something with super special variegation for a lot of money any day.

    I have a large variety also. A few rare, several that were rare during covid and other more common plants. As long as I find them beautiful, that’s all that matters. I have no desire to sell unless I had a plant shop, but my community has regular plant swaps. Those are fun and I come home with plants I wasn’t particularly looking for, but really enjoy.

    The economics of plants are something I find interesting so I appreciate this video. I think it’s interesting that my Calatea that I bought for $10 once upon a time would have cost over $50 and it will never increase in price again. But most of my arid species like my caudiciform and cacti will grow up from their “cheap” seedling value and gain value quite easily

    Great video! I’d like to share a bit about how the market works here in Brazil because it’s completely different from others. That pyramid you mentioned basically doesn’t exist here. Unfortunately, we have only about 4 or 5 players importing different plants in general, and their value is mostly based on guesswork. For example, they’ll launch a plant one month for R$10,000, and the next month, drop it to R$3,000.
    There’s no unity among producers, so us buyers are left at the mercy of their decisions. On top of that, importing plants as an individual isn’t allowed here, which really limits our access. Speaking from personal experience, I once paid around R$1,500 for an A. Kunayalense, and just 1 or 2 months later, the same plant was selling for R$400 because sellers started competing to see who could go cheaper.
    So nowadays, most collectors just wait for a while until the sellers undercut each other as much as possible, then we buy to avoid taking a "loss." It’s a pretty sad situation.

    I absolutely love Indonesian anthuriums, but finding a seller was very difficult. One of the sellers I have stuck with had some of the same grievances you did, that many operate in a way that did not guarantee long term customers. One of the things I disliked was how pushy they are with their sales, if I gave a budget it was ignored. But again, those good sellers that respect my budget constraints and request have resulted in me receiving some wonderful anthurium for my collection. And they offer me stuff I did not know existed 🎉

    Just found Devil Monstera on the Esty site. Ships from France. Also picked up a variegated Billi...both are rooted nodes with leaves.

    The only time I got a "rare" plant was on a 50% off sale when the vine turned into an elongated, scraggly mess and the shop was looking to get rid of it ASAP. Propagated it from the nodes, sold the vines that grew out of the propagation on FB marketplace on the cheap, actually not only breaking even but also getting a little extra back. I love propagating plants, so it worked out for me, but I'd never buy a truly rare plant just to have one - too much risk of thrips and spider mites decimating the prized possession

    I rather kill common plants than rare ones lol. I don’t really like the terms common and rare, but I understand that they exist for a reason. Nice pyramids😊, reminded me of being back in college lol.

    Thank you so much, it was very interesting to know how this business works. It is also interesting how to get there, how to be a part of that business. At the moment I'm just passionate about plants, have ton of them at home, but how to make something bigger of it...

      Its always a good idea to propagate and upgrade the collection. Although just keeping what we have is good too. Ive been doing just that as my video edits take most of my time.

      In all seriousness, though, I love the information you provide in this video. I never thought about the fact that the 32K price tag on the Monstera Devil isn’t necessarily for a collector, but for a company that’s going to propagate for profit.

    What I'm seeing is the increase in price in the secondary market...ebay, Etsy and others.
    So many sellers buying at big box stores and then doubling the price.

    • @onlyplants
      @onlyplants  Місяць тому

      Whoaaa very opportunistic. Well as long as there are people willing to buy them then its fair game. Maybe they found the best qualities at the big box stores and took the risk. Which takes time and effort

    In Australia we only have one person who sells exotic staghorn ferns. I got banned from buying from them because I questioned them as to why they ripped me off. They hung up phone and sent a text message saying that they didn’t want to do business anymore

    I wonder if the difference between the growers in Indonesia versus China/Thailand/U.S. is not so much a short-term mindset as much as a lack of capital. You need a lot more capital to tide you over while you are mass propagating.

    • @onlyplants
      @onlyplants  Місяць тому

      Haha it will not suddenly become 1,000 🤤 it might take many years. Unless someone dumb went along and tissue cultured it… I hope they dont do it yet!

    As a person with really specific taste mostly for African succulents, little of this applies or seems appealing. Most people I meet have never seen the things in my collection and are already astounded. Where do you meet people who would know enough about the market to be impressed by a collection featuring the plants worth over a thousand dollars? I look at these variegated aroids and I don't get it.

    • @onlyplants
      @onlyplants  Місяць тому +1

      True, there are many like you actually. But huge majority of the players now actually delve deep into the aroids. Its important to aknowledge this market trend and phenomenon… and… the good news is, trends dont last forever. A lot of skills developed today will apply to other genus in the future. I predict there will be spillovers to other genus/trend, whatever that may be - down the road.
