Pikes Peak 2022 Raceday Full Run! Racing Blind To 14,115ft in UP Tesla Model S Plaid Dark Helmet!

- What is more terrifying than a high speed run up Pikes Peak with massive fog, wet conditions, and those high speed blue sky corners with no guardrails? A windshield that fogged up directly in line of sight and having to finish the race up the mountain fully blind!
Watch as @randypobstofficial has a great run spoiled by a fogged windshield. He tries dropping the windows but it doesn’t help! He loosens his harness and tries wiping the windshield with his hand while racing but doesn’t help! The defroster was on the whole race but it didn’t help! Instead of finishing 6th out of all 72 entries (he was on pace for a 6th place finish) to being blinded we finished 19 out of 72.
Until the windshield blinded Randy it was shaping up to be an awesomely close race between our 4900lb stock power/cooling Tesla Model S Plaid and Pikes Peak veteran Zwart’s incredible million dollar Porsche 935 ultimate factory race car.
Sector 1+2 Combined times:
4:22.73 - UP Tesla Model S Plaid Pobst
4:22.75 - 992 Turbo S Light Weight Donner
4:23.41 - Porsche 935 Race Car Zwart
Wow that was exciting!
A frustrating but promising end to Pikes Peak week. We are happy with how the car performed as we dialed in the suspension for the challenging track all week. It was ready for a win on race day. In the end the mountain decided this year wasn’t our year.
We are proud of our Randy and proud of the amazing work of our team.
This car is continuing validation of our production parts our clients enjoy. All brakes and suspension are UP production items as is the seat, harness and our UP-03 Wheels.

Congrats to all drivers & teams who put it on the line to challenge the mountain this year! It takes admirable commitment to run this race! Special congrats to our Tesla family Blake Fuller (he ran our production brakes and wheels on his Plaid) and Dai Yoshihara with the excellent Turn14/Evasive Tesla Model 3!

“To finish first, first you must finish.”Great job bringing the Plaid home in one piece Randy! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👍🏼🇺🇸
To finish first, first you need to know where the fan control is 😂, you can’t make this up
If you had the yoke you could press the button for voice command and start yelling at the car "defroster plaidmode on".🤣
I wonder whether it would have worked in those conditions. But vital to learn the controls. For safety.
@@Cloxxki It would, the defroster is crazy when you turn it on... too bad Randy had no chance of turning it on using the screen.
@@Arpedk how the hell would randy screaming inside a helmet, inside a very noisy tesla, initiate a voice command?
I thought he was driving faster than speed of sound.
@@RustOnWheels it’s an ev it’s super quiet at full speed. The problem is Randy’s voice… what’s up with his health?
To the people that don't know, you can add max defrost to the main screen of the Tesla, on the central bar of icons, making it a single click to turn on.
Or, you could have a physical button for everything that relates to safety.
@@enforcer-enduro You can add whatever safety icons you like to the bottom bar. This is something Randy's team should have handled ahead of time.
@@chubstheclown agree
The fact he doesn’t know the car. SMH
Ship the Plaid onto the Nurburgring!
Only has a minute to catch up to some Porsches! Maybe in a decade.
Crazy conditions, Tesla should add an auto defroster!
So sad we have to wait for next year to see what this car can really do, so fast through those first 2 sectors!
Even my Hyundai has an auto defroster. lol
When the Plaid grows up, it wants to be a 911 Turbo.😊
Why would you want to down grade from Tesla`s 1000+ bhp to 911`s lower bhp ??
This is why I'm using anti-fog spray on the windshield each time I'm racing in the wet.
Randy’s team should’ve known to use anti-fog or at least turn up the defogger speed to high. When it’s foggy out the windshield always fogs up. Too bad they didn’t have that on their minds.
when you have a car with windows open you would think you guys would set the defroster on high from the beginning
Fastest time in sector 1 on the day and 2 seconds behind for sector 2. Damn the rain&fog I say. 🙂
Congrats to team unplugged and Randy pobst one of the finest mature wheelman out there. 😁
Yeah, its not slow. Was just 50 seconds slower than a 911 Turbo S, which isn't bad for a Tesla tbh
Randy is an absolute legend and mature enough to know when to ride it out to bring it home.
Google for results with splits, links get deleted.
It wasn't even top 5 in s1 and was neck and neck with the stock Porsche at s2.
I think You did an Amazing Job driving Randy. Even under that Extremely stressful situation with the defogger. I would've done the same thing, just hug the insides of those corners. Mad Props Randy.✌️
13:14 "I don't know where the defroster is in this Tesla" ... Tesla removed the defroster shortcut from main screen when they "refreshed" the interface for the plaid launch to make it look new. Many Tesla drivers miss it. It's not just an issue during racing, it is a general safety issue, if the window fogs up and the driver has to search in submenus for the defroster button. If Tesla learns from racing issues they could improve safety for every Tesla driver.
You can add the shortcut again now :)
Randy great work driving through that soup, you got some balls! The fog and windshield fogging up was all out of your control. Lesson learned to add to the checklist was RainX Anti-fog and to make sure the defrost setting is set on high heat. End of the day your safe and the Unplugged Team got a lot of data for next years efforts. See you at Laguna for Tesla Corsa!
So glad you're safe Randy! Can't wait for next year!! Add to the todo list: Train Randy on the Tesla controls :)
Yeah or could’ve added the defog button to the bottom of the screen for him.
The foggy windshield would have been a perfect situation for voice commands, unfortunately the modified steering wheel doesn't appear to be connected to it.
Randy mode - when the car fog up, trigger auto de-fogging, especially climbing high altitude, on mountain road exceeding 120mph
Keep up the great work Randy and UP! This just makes the anticipation for next years race even better!
Get Randy a plaid as a daily driver so he is familiar with the controls for next time lol
You guys should come out to Sonoma Raceway for the Holley High Voltage event. Lots of people with your products on the track there. It would blow peoples minds to see your projects up close.
Damn that was stressful, he earned his pay for sure. 1000ph and 5% visibility. No thanks.
Next year I suppose. Least didnt wreck the car :○
Pretty quick, only 50 seconds slower than a stock Porsche on street tires.
Great driving Randy!
Great work team!
Next year I envision the defroster fan speed controlled by a large retro Boost knob😎
I could feel the frustration and disappointment in your voice Randy, and I felt it HARD. All things considered, I'm glad you made it up safely. There's always another race, but there will never be another Randy freakin' Pobst.
Amazing run despite the fog troubles.
It would have been possible to do a one click max defrost command in the central bar of the screen ! Its fully customizable. Please take notes for next year. Other than that probs to the whole team and Randy for handling this beast as well as possible 👍🏽
Next time rain-x the inside and outside of the windshield ... It will drasticy help with any form of water buildup
Just use vinegar.
I saw a race on TV years and years ago where Hans Stuck was driving a fogged-up car, frantically trying to clear the windshield between turns with a tiny little piece of rag.
seriously how can you not know where the defroster is omg, well you finished safely.
good
Wow... of all things that could've gone wrong.... If only Randy had one of those As-Seen-on-TV windshield cleaning wands within arms reach.
Gutted for you all after all that 😓 hard work. 😭 😭 😭
Pike’s Peak is the sickest. Great video.
One of the first things I did when I got my Model S was stick the defroster control on the main screen. Funny how long you can go without out it, until suddenly you need it right away. When you can't see anything is the exact wrong time to start thumbing through the menus.
Just a thought, but if you're running hard, with a "red" battery condition, you want the blower on max heat to help cool the pack?
Double benefit?
that's a little lack of preparation...😜
nice job staying on the road though, must be frustrating dialing in all the setting to save a few seconds then eventually to lose so much time over such a stupid detail, and also risking your life (even more).
voice command would have been handy if you could trigger it without any button. or simply some communication with the pit to trouble shoot the solution. touch screen does not mix well with racing/gloves etc. it looks the yoke is not suited for racing either.
but hey, it's still faster than the Nissan leaf...
Model S plaid is my favorite.
Be SUPER cool if the hillclimb was half of the event and then do it on the downhill for the second part.
haha if you had the default steering wheel, you could have used voice command for defrost.
This a very cool race, I love it.
I don't know if you had the AC on (dehumidified heating works best for clearing the fog), but even if you did the car will prioritize cooling the drivetrain over the cabin, so when the battery got hot it would still have fogged up.
Know your car!
might be a good investement to get the S3XY buttons, you can map them to turn on certain functions, like the windshield defroster, doesn't weigh anything and can be glued to the steering wheel.
I've seen some people around the internet mock modern cars that still have physical controls available for key functions, not relying completely of touchscreens. This is exactly why having intuitive controls is important. You don't need to be racing up a mountain to learn the importance of instant access to key vehicle controls.
Put back in the Command Knob...Push the knob and say "Turn on Front Defroster"" is all you need to do.
Tesla fanboys still say: its a stock S plaid.
(Its slower than 911 turboS, BTW)
"As you can see, you can't see"
Awesome!
Bad conditions, you guys should have indicated how to turn on the defroster to the driver
Better to come back to fight another day. You did as best you could with the conditions.
Still slower than a stock 911 Turbo S 😄
So when you are you going to catch a stock 911 Turbo with this thing?
Foggy n Randy s eyes r foggy as well...u should have Blake or like him take over...hahaha
Insane...but awesome
Great footage! Where was the defroster switch in the touch screen ?
You have to press on that greyed out "67" to press on it. Tesla needs to bring back defroster to the front screen. Next time the team need to have a live screen from the car itself, you can also turn defroster on from the Tesla APP.
@@Arpedk Except lack of connectivity up there means no remote control and besides, they had no way to know he needed it.
@@lemketron Starlink 🌠
It's a road car. Learn all the controls! 😁
That is so rough lol
🔥🔥🔥
"I can't see, I can't see." Use the Full Self Driving feature and Dog Mode. However, FSD would keep you in your lane.
Randy you're still Performed like no one else can do. Next year is another race. I feel bad bad. Racing in Pikes Peak is not average racer can do. Only the best of the best. Next year. Will be the one.
You need a tech guy who can remotely overclock your fans... It wouldn't add weight, even a Pi Zero could do it. You don't need high bandwidth as long as you have walkies, you have data.
what's that useless satellite map on the centre console for? I keep staring at it and it does nothing.
Car needs internal wipers
Tesla's decision to remove the physical buttons and putting it behind three clicks on a touch screen looking like a genious decision about now...
well, the car wasn't specifically designed for this kind of conditions ahahah
You can place de defrost icon at the bottom of the screen, to be permanantly here...
They always know best which is why they don't take advice from experts who drive their cars daily.
Its a single click, you can put the max defrost on the central bar in the display.
@@gioelestendardo2819 This is equally dangerous when it happens while driving on the motorway
When you would pay $10,000 for a rag on a stick.
No one went under 10 weak
🤟🏾.. 🔌 🔋 💯🫡
Slow. 911 Turbo S was faster
got their ass kicked by porsche once again
