I am just impressed of the performance of the zo6 as a stock street car coming so damn close to the tesla with a stripped interior, cage, agressive aero, 1000 hp, and race tires. I think a car like the 911 gt3 would be faster than the tesla even with it being a street car on street tires because it has a bit more aero than the c8.
The regular model S plaid scored a time of 1:27.78 wheras the zo6 was like 1:32 if we are comparing street cars to street cars, the plaid still comes out on top it should be noted that the regular model S plaid is comparable price to the regular zo6, I don't know much about race times, but if 5 seconds is comparable, then we should be comparing the unmodified plaid to the unmodified zo6
props to the vette. Not only 350hp short and on street tires, only 2 seconds off is crazy good. tires alone could give you that time improvement, let alone an 1000hp ICE
Worst track comparison ever. “We took this production car with 50% more horsepower than the competition… We gutted the interior to shed weight… We bolted on a full aero kit… We added racing slicks… It doubled the price of our car… We maximized everything we could control trackside in our favor… And we dominated for one single lap. Condolences GM 😭” -150hp on 66%? Good thing it wasn’t a 10 lap race because the battery died after 4. The track record probably stood for about 5 minutes while the Corvette put on some slicks.
The front splitter scraping th the ground under braking can’t be good for underbody aerodynamics. You’d be shifting the center of pressure drastically under braking every time. I don’t think you can change the suspension mounting points for more anti dive geometry, but maybe stiffer suspension is needed
I would love to see the McMurtry Speirling on this track. I'm guessing it would smash this record, those under chassis fans providing 2000kg of downforce from stop is way too much of an advantage.
A heavily modified Z06 would have been a better test. But agree, nonetheless a huge achievement for EVs--it's shows just cause you replace the engine (EV vs ICE), the dynamics can still be addressed to make an extremely, possibly better fast car. Then again, watch Porsche come in next year with a modified 911 to break that record, in typical Porsche fashion.
Considering this package already had slower times than a stock 911 turbo S in the pikes peak hill climb trials, I dont think Porsche would need to try that hard.
@@williamgrover7137 Most people (I hope) expect the 911 to keep dominating on bendy tracks with not many straights compared to this Tesla. But for this tank of a car to even perform the way it did on a bendy track is just insane. The big body weight can't be hidden. Impossible. It sort of looked like skipping a bit in some corners. Yet it somehow did it. Very impressive.
I feel like electric cars(tesla) is like Honda civic, integra were in 1980s-2000 hated for no apparent reason but wiping the floor with the competition in all aspects..
Would be interesting to see, but I suspect it'll be massively down on charge and power and probably in battery cooling mode by the time the long straight comes in, so it'll be robbed of a lot of performance and laptime there.
Nope, and they where running factory aero... No add ons, and none of the pikes peak bs the black had. So race tires, and over double the aero and full roll cage. Sure its fast, but it needs to be compared to a Porsche 911 RSR, or the GTE race team car.
@@spazz954 For info : The GT2 RS came equipped with the Weissach package, including the magnesium wheels, specific Cup 2 tires, and plenty of carbon parts. The tested version costs $345,300. The Viper ACR came with the Extreme Aero package, which delivers 1,700+ pounds of peak downforce at top speed through a massive adjustable dual-element carbon fiber rear wing, rear carbon fiber diffuser, unique SRT hood with removable louvers, detachable extension for the front splitter and additional dive planes. Spring and anti-roll-bar rates were increased and the ACR was fitted with forged aluminum wheels and track-ready race tires.
"You can't left foot brake it and press the gas at the same time" You don't need to, its an EV you have 100% of the torque at any rpm so no need to keep the revs up like in an ICE.
Left foot braking can be used to encourage the car to pivot, increasing cornering speed. So yes, you do need to if you want to get the best possible lap time out of it.
The Rimac Nevera is 0-60 in 1.7 sec. Plaid owners are amazed at the power and speed. Acceleration does not decrease under 200 mph. 1900 hp. The Rimac even has an intelligent track mode that can teach you how to drive the track the fastest. But it is gorgeous inside and out. It doesn't look like a Frankenstein car like this.
Now that we know what it can do at 100% battery, I'm curious what it does at 10% battery. How much performance loss is there as you go through the battery? Like let's say it can do 20 laps on a battery, what do those times look like for each lap as the battery drains?
you'll probably be a couple seconds slower on 10% as you might not have enough power for the thermal management or something or other 100-200 horsepower loss is a pretty big deal
it was already throttling HARD at the end of the first lap.this car would might lose a 10 lap race against a civic. well, maybe not if the driver manages heat carefully. but it will at least have to slow down so much to keep the battery from burning up that it might as well be a 400 hp car
Depends on the battery overhead. If the inverter is 400V and the fully charged battery is 440V, it won’t throttle until 75% SOC or when the battery hits 400 volts at wide open throttle. Dead flat is around 280-300 volts depending on what is in the management system. At 300 volts the motor may be getting 75% of the peak power the inverter can provide. In reality, 300v is close to 0% SOC it would be more like limp home mode because of the electronics trying to save the battery
When it can compete in a 24-hour endurance race such as LeMans then I will be interested. No electric car lacks for acceleration or zero to 60 times The big downfall is the charging time and having to wait for your car instead of your car being always ready for you.
Lol, so when it can do an incredibly specific race you'll be interested? Regardless of it basically being the best in every single category except it can't race for 24hrs? Odd requirement for a fast car if you ask me, but please understand the charge timing isn't a problem for 99.9999% of humans on normal use, including at a track.
That race was relevant in the old days when manufacturers wanted to prove how well they could build an engine via a torture test. In todays world it doesn’t matter. Electric motors can run forever in race world times. I imagine racers customizing their cars for battery hot swaps. I’m guessing they can get that down to a couple of seconds. It’s going to be great fun watching the racing world change to this superior technology.
@Boostedboiz You need to get the Tesla Cart on the same wheel and tire setup and good coil overs, race alignment, and corner balanced and try to see if you can beat the record!

Well.... i would challenge this claim...because at Goodwood last year we had the MCMURTY FAN CAR...that DESTROYED the hill record and there is NO WAY This Tesla will ever break the record.
That is true, technically it goes faster with a lighter tank. But a petrol V12 is also a BITCH to maintain, and racing it takes years of its life. Launching one is so traumatic to the motor & transmission that companies limit how many launches you can do before you void your warranty. EVs don't care - launching and racing doesn't hurt the motor one bit.
I’m sure most people watching will not understand a track built car can never be compared to a stock production car. By comparing the two show the lack of track knowledge from this video
I wouldn't be surprised if it ran a high 18/low 19 if they had tyre warmers. Definitely not a fan of lack of engine noise very boring to watch. That being said I did enjoy seeing the mannerisms of the dark helmet vs the c8 I found it cool see how they behaved on each corner. I do appreciate how fast this thing can go great video
So cool that Tesla acknowledged the Dark Helmet in the latest 2023 Holiday update by adding the car as a playable vehicle option in the beach buggy racing game in the Tesla Arcade.
very nice, even though not fitting to any race car regulations! We're gonna see many more mad EVs in the future, also street legal ones! Just imagine a car with a way lighter battery and smaller chassis.
yeah battery weight is the weak link. plaid powetrain in a sportscar chassis, with a smaller high power density battery, strong batteyr cooling and a 1kWh supercapacitor buffer to handle all the acceleration/regen braking demand. todays high performance ev like rimac nevera or tesla plaid are designed for range have to fight the weight constantly
They also claimed it broke the lap record while it was so far away from road legal and being compared to road cars. Like, it's a $110k Tesla with probably $100k in mods. Those tires alone are $1k each. If you converter the Corvette into a full on race car it'd be much faster too.
Now I wanna see how the Rimac Nevera, Venom F5 and the fastest Lucid would do. I was hoping Jesse Iwuji wins with that sound. I'd fall asleep racing that Tesla the way it's so quiet inside on Coker's run.
Rimac Nevera is road homologated car and still does everything better than this...whatever this is...an unusable track car. So, Tesla still has to think of something better. Nevertheless...I love your style and content.

He was driving on the absolute edge to break those records. I was expecting a poor time, because it looked scrappy in places, but clearly that was because the car was on the very edge and avoiding near potential disaster.
Sorry, state of charge typically doesn't effect power till it gets down around 30% or so and range extending profiles are enacted, the bigger issue is going to be heat in the battery. I have driven/ tested Tesla's (and other EV's) on track and they really are only good for about 1 lap before heat starts causing a power reduction, as you see in the display, the battery got hot and it seemed to not accel as hard onto the front straight after turn 9 (last turn). Still a very impressive build. I know Jessie as well, a very good man, I am happy to see him doing well.
Lucid air sapphire (one that could stand a chance against the Plaid with track package) doesn't exist anywhere yet. Normal lucid air with 1111hp is beaten by the Tesla Model X which is wayy heavier, less powerful and just goes to show that Tesla Hp (in Plaid config) are more than any other gas or EV hp

It would take 88hrs to complete the 24hr race
I am just impressed of the performance of the zo6 as a stock street car coming so damn close to the tesla with a stripped interior, cage, agressive aero, 1000 hp, and race tires. I think a car like the 911 gt3 would be faster than the tesla even with it being a street car on street tires because it has a bit more aero than the c8.
The regular model S plaid scored a time of 1:27.78
wheras the zo6 was like 1:32
if we are comparing street cars to street cars, the plaid still comes out on top
it should be noted that the regular model S plaid is comparable price to the regular zo6,
I don't know much about race times, but if 5 seconds is comparable, then we should be comparing the unmodified plaid to the unmodified zo6
Missed opportunity at 16:40. Comment could have been "Ridiculous name, ludicrous speed."
props to the vette. Not only 350hp short and on street tires, only 2 seconds off is crazy good. tires alone could give you that time improvement, let alone an 1000hp ICE
2 seconds off but huge driver difference. total difference at the end was over 10 seconds
Just Plaid, well done Dark Helmet!
Worst track comparison ever.
“We took this production car with 50% more horsepower than the competition…
We gutted the interior to shed weight…
We bolted on a full aero kit…
We added racing slicks…
It doubled the price of our car…
We maximized everything we could control trackside in our favor…
And we dominated for one single lap. Condolences GM 😭”
-150hp on 66%? Good thing it wasn’t a 10 lap race because the battery died after 4.
The track record probably stood for about 5 minutes while the Corvette put on some slicks.
The front splitter scraping th the ground under braking can’t be good for underbody aerodynamics. You’d be shifting the center of pressure drastically under braking every time.
I don’t think you can change the suspension mounting points for more anti dive geometry, but maybe stiffer suspension is needed
Stiffer suspension in the front probably means more understeer
Thing looked super twitchy under braking. Doesn't look fun to drive.
Most gt cars also scrape, you just barely notice because of the engine noise

I would love to see the McMurtry Speirling on this track. I'm guessing it would smash this record, those under chassis fans providing 2000kg of downforce from stop is way too much of an advantage.
The roadster 2 will probably come with a fan assist option, so it can suck itself to the ground like the Speirling.
A zo7 package would’ve been a better test. But hey that dark helmet is one beast of a thing.
@@jojog8304 Porsche don't want to lose at everything. In typical Porsche fashion like you said... Maybe they salty
Considering this package already had slower times than a stock 911 turbo S in the pikes peak hill climb trials, I dont think Porsche would need to try that hard.
Or anything on a slick like the tesla was, all the other cars on a DOT tire
@@williamgrover7137 Most people (I hope) expect the 911 to keep dominating on bendy tracks with not many straights compared to this Tesla. But for this tank of a car to even perform the way it did on a bendy track is just insane. The big body weight can't be hidden. Impossible. It sort of looked like skipping a bit in some corners. Yet it somehow did it. Very impressive.
Very impressive one lap pace from the EV. With that much aero, hp and tq advantage I had expected as much.
I feel like electric cars(tesla) is like Honda civic, integra were in 1980s-2000 hated for no apparent reason but wiping the floor with the competition in all aspects..
I'd like to see Dark Helmet running at Nürburgring
Would probably do similar times to GT3/GTE/ whatever class those Porsches and Lambos are in the Nurburgring 24h.
Would be interesting to see, but I suspect it'll be massively down on charge and power and probably in battery cooling mode by the time the long straight comes in, so it'll be robbed of a lot of performance and laptime there.
@@KitKitChanIsaacLmao, is this a serious comment?
@@NexusWarior211 Idk, I was just guessing when I made the comment. I wasn't even thinking straight at the time.
Awesome time from an awesome car! But did the Porsche GT2 RS and Viper ACR also run on full racing slicks?? If not, the comparison is not really fair.
Nope, and they where running factory aero... No add ons, and none of the pikes peak bs the black had. So race tires, and over double the aero and full roll cage. Sure its fast, but it needs to be compared to a Porsche 911 RSR, or the GTE race team car.
@@spazz954 For info :
The GT2 RS came equipped with the Weissach package, including the magnesium wheels, specific Cup 2 tires, and plenty of carbon parts.
That bumper is suitable to shoving the stop oil protestor
The problem is, it can only go around once.
@@AndyQuinton Yes, in a conventional drivetrain that is correct, but with an AWD EV you can use torque vectoring to do the same thing.
It doesn't look like a Frankenstein car like this.
ye they talk so much bullshit its unreal... the opening speech at the beginning made me lol "noone ever build electric car as fast as this" wtf :D
Yeah, and the Rimac also costs $2M+, if I had the money, I'd take Rimac, but realistically it's gonna be this.
for 15x the price lol
Now that we know what it can do at 100% battery, I'm curious what it does at 10% battery. How much performance loss is there as you go through the battery? Like let's say it can do 20 laps on a battery, what do those times look like for each lap as the battery drains?
you'll probably be a couple seconds slower on 10% as you might not have enough power for the thermal management or something or other
100-200 horsepower loss is a pretty big deal
it was already throttling HARD at the end of the first lap.this car would might lose a 10 lap race against a civic. well, maybe not if the driver manages heat carefully. but it will at least have to slow down so much to keep the battery from burning up that it might as well be a 400 hp car
Rory had a great time in the U.S. 😀
Can’t wait to see it in the 24 hours of Lemans!
Nice comparison. I wonder how a cheaper (relatively) Aerial Atom would do around those corners.

Excellent video production.
finally a car video i can watch on silent
Petrol V12 doesn't lose performance if the fuel tank is 66%.
I’d rock that at the track all day. Gonna trade up our P100D for a Plaid soon, prices still coming down.
Crazy that our p100d are slow lol. Few years I’ll see you with a plaid myself
@@geemy9675 now that you mention it, I think it would be pretty interesting to see the Nevera have a go on this track
They also claimed it broke the lap record while it was so far away from road legal and being compared to road cars. Like, it's a $110k Tesla with probably $100k in mods. Those tires alone are $1k each. If you converter the Corvette into a full on race car it'd be much faster too.

He was driving on the absolute edge to break those records. I was expecting a poor time, because it looked scrappy in places, but clearly that was because the car was on the very edge and avoiding near potential disaster.
yeah, only saved it on that big long corner when the down force could actually do something. you can tell the weight of the car is an issue.
I'll NEVER own, drive or ride in anything Telsa ever.
If you save a little every week, maybe you can get there.
What about rimac nivera and the lucid air
So it doesn't matter if you start counting the lap from standstill or when crossing the lap line at speed?
For all those complaining about the intro, Lucid doesn't really exist in the UK yet.
You also can't get the Plaid in the UK normally either. The title makes no sense either way.
