- When you’re racing on the limit along the winding mountain roads of Pikes Peak, there’s a fine line between success and failure. With road and weather conditions shifting constantly, even purpose built vehicles struggle to make it to the top. They say it’s almost guaranteed that something will go wrong for each team during race week and your job as a driver, a race team, or a team manager, is to mitigate that risk as much as possible just to get your car to the top of the mountain. On race day, you’ve only got one shot and everything you’ve been working on for the last year needs to survive 156 turns to get to the top of the 12.42-mile road.
Last year, we took on the challenge of Pikes Peak International Hill Climb for the first time. With our favorite racecar driver, Randy Pobst at the helm of a modified Model 3, we were filled with excitement and potential. But then on the second day of qualifying at a turn nicknamed Bottomless Pit, our hopes and dreams of making it to the top, all came crumbling down.
Over the next several days our rockstar team of engineers and technicians did the impossible, they rebuilt and raced to the summit.This is our story of perseverance in the face of almost impossible odds and doing whatever it takes to get to the top.

Watching this in my model 3 performance!
Isn't it a crazy thought that the car that won was almost completely stock? The 'Electric Performance' one driven by Blake that is. All it had really was different tires and some stickers, it won the Exhibition class and was getting into Open Wheel times.
To think that cooling is the only issue these cars experience under such strain, even the Unplugged Performance vehicle is a totally stock powertrain with improved cooling. It's insane.
Tesla might get all the 'but but... my panel gaps' complaints, but damn can they make a seriously beefy and robust powertrain, no doubt about that.

Great story, but what was really amazing was watching the team roll up their sleeves and get that car repaired in 2 days. The dedication and perseverance was inspiring. Failure was not an option for this team. A great video to watch over again.

@@Executiveinvestments- these must be used, because there's a quite a long waiting list for any new model, minimum of 4-6 weeks for model 3 performance, others for much longer than that.
I want to see the Unplugged Roadster do that run.

I have Abraham’s Lincoln’s axe. It’s just had the handle replaced 7 times and the head replaced 6 times.
I’m in tears and love the morale of this story. Be relentless in what you do and never give up. What a great comeback at 1.3s close to 1st. Kudos to the entire team and all well wishers. Looking forward to the Model S Plaid on the next one.

There's a great lesson for life here! Never give up and stay determined at all costs! I'm sure that rebuild was a long and tough circumstance but all who were involved also know they became a part of something special, which doesn't happen often enough in life.

Loved this story. I'm betting I am not the only 'ol motorhead who got a little emotional toward the end when we heard the car was NOT at it's potential, Randy knew it wasn't YET HE and his Tesla ran a mere 00.01.1 behind the leader. What time 'could' he and that spirited little hotrod have posted had the car been able to give Randy it's all? We'll find out later this year. Great comeback story, well done Unplugged Performance Team, all those who supported the rebuild and that wiley 'ol veteran pilot Randy Pobst!
Looking forward to getting my hands on some Unplugged Performance coilovers and swaybars here in the UK once I can get my insurance to not triple my rate. The Model 3 handles great stock but it has a little too much roll for my liking.

Is Randy not the nicest guy in the World? He just exudes positivity. Even after the crash, love that he doesn’t utter any profanity. “Crappola”. I just want to be his friend. All that and one of the greatest drivers on the planet. Why everyone brings him out to extract the fastest track times out of any car presented to him. Shows when he posts track records in all these bone stock cars. Can’t wait to see what he’s going to do with the UP Plaid on the mountain!!!

EVs are truly intense, ICE is the horse and buggy now. I can't imagine anyone thinking EVs are not good for racing, since they dominate every motorsport now.
the one confusing thing, why no tire warmers? 1) You have an electric car, ok I can understand you do not want to waste precious battery. 2) generator? How important are warm tires? You can bring a support a vehicle, no? Support vehicle either carries the generator or is another electric car to plug in the tire warmers? Maybe I do not understand all of the rules involved.
