How do my films look the way they do?

  • I get asked how I film things in my style a lot, and it's not something I had really given much thought to. It's a combination of a number of inspirations and sources, and it's something that evolves and changes with each project, but in it's current state, this is how I achieve my 'look'
*I hate how this makes it sound like I think I have a signature style that everyone recognises, but I can't think of a better way of putting this into words.

this is literally just that one friend who's really passionate about something and they're just bombarding you with an encyclopedia's worth of information and you have little idea what they're talking about but it seems really cool and you can tell they're having a blast so you're supportive of them

I like that you're not scared of contrast. I work as an animator in stop-motion (usually kids TV) and the lighting is often completely bombarded with fill, like everything is so well lit your eye isn't drawn anywhere in particular and it even detracts from the animation sometimes.

I found this really helpful. I'm starting a video editing and cinematography course for college, and am learning from your channel that the lighting is much more important than a lot of other things. That may seem obvious to someone with much more cinematography knowledge, but I thought there would be a much greater emphasis on colour grading.

I love how passionate you are about filmmaking 💕. When I look at the process of filmmaking and photography I look at through an artist’s perspective. Even if a piece isn’t 100% realistic, the lighting and shadows can have such a big impact on how dynamic/realistic/dramatic something looks (in my opinion) which may have absolutely nothing to do with what you were talking about with lighting and shadows but it’s just the connection I made. And I absolutely understand what it’s like to ruin a picture by increasing the contrast or the brightness or the sharpness too much 😭.
Anyway- the point I’m trying to make is, despite not really knowing a lot about the lovely art of filmmaking, I found this really interesting! 💕
