I wish you made more videos, you bring a unique aspect of filmmaking videos on to UA-cam which I can’t find anyone do as well as you. you tackle the use of gear in context. Keep up the good work.
I saw the music video before, it was absolutely *stunning!* Your insight on it is really quite fascinating ^-^ Your filming skills are amazing! The shots had very beautiful and unique styles of lighting. Also, the colour grading in this video is spectacular!
Whenever I watch one of these videos, my passion for film shines through SO much. I just can’t stop smiling, even though I’m not involved in any way. I absolutely love it, and the way you can learn things from him at the same time
I've just started using a more proper lighting setup for my stills photography (man proper lights are expensive) so it's really cool watching this now I have a little context on how it works!
The video turned out so beautifully! The things you do with different light temperatures are absolutely incredible and it’s so interesting to hear you break it down for us. There’s a really cool live recording of Daughter performing All I Wanted at Asylum Chapel so it was really awesome to see you film there too. My only criticism of the video would be that as someone who plays the guitar (admittedly not that well), I would have liked to see more footage of him playing. Of course, that didn’t make it any less of a gorgeously shot video!
Five hours?! Y'all are crazy, but you put out a hell of a video. The composition decisions were great. Not just the lighting that you went into, but also the angles and facing: the claustrophobia of framing him facing left and putting extra space to the right, contrasted with the wide-open and empty chapel; the haughtiness of his angle above the camera compared to the beatification of the rays coming through stained glass in a hazy room. Truly delicious work.
I really appreciate that! Yeah I really liked the negative framing. It wasn't something that I had planned, but as we started shooting it just felt right!
I like your lighting breakdowns... But I would love another colour grading tips video, Mumbo... I like the way you used colour contrast here and I would be grateful if you could make a grading tutorial for us beginners... Cheers!
Hey, love the video Im interested to here what the editing process is like for a shoot like this? How do you go about stitching the whole thing together so to speak?
We used a click track on the day which has 8 loud beeps at the start, and we were rolling audio on each take. So when it comes to editing I put that click track in the timeline, and then when I import a take I sync up those 8 beats. I put all the different angles (I think there were 12?) on layers of the timeline and disabled them all, then as I played the song through I just grabbed clips from each of layers and dragged them into the 'master timeline' which was the actual video. I have NO CLUE if that made any sense.
Loved the video (and the song)! Edit: This feedback applies to both this song and the "Heavy Words" video Only feedback I'd give is that a lot of the lines have some deep emotion behind them in the music, but in the video he looks like he's delivering them with little emotion. It just seemed kinda off; I think as director, you might need to try to coax that same emotional delivery out of the artist to get it to really match the song. (In fairness, this might actually be the way he sang the song, but it just...idk it didn't seem to match imo) ( I hope this doesn't come off as "nitpicky" or "know it all" type - I certainly couldn't create anything remotely similar to this and I'm a huge fan. It was just something I noticed personally and I hope the feedback is useful to you. :) )
It's pretty cool, pretty cool. It looks real sweet and real nice. I was a bit confused until you mentioned the hazer. ProMist alone won't get you that look! I'm impressed at the efficiency of it all, and I just want to ask where did you plug the blondes? Power saving is one of the many reasons LEDs are taking over (tungsten still has the best warm light though, nicely done). Did you rent a generator, or did the place have its own power installation that you could use? Overall, I'm really impressed with the efficiency of it all. Handheld rigs do allow you to shoot quicker, especially with such a minimal lighting setup. I'm finishing a masters in Cinematography and I think my favourite thing that I've done was a janky unprepared exercise at the start of the year that I had to shoot in a tiny attic with just a small LED panel and a Canon 100D. It turned out surprisingly cool. Simple often works best, and it's always nice to see. Every project needs it's look, and this sort of stylised color contrast goes so well with the typical music video aesthetic. Because I paid special attention to it, I realised that in the wides there's nowhere near as much blue backlight as in the close-ups, but if I hadn't I'd have missed it. In bigger projects, geling the windows should be done to preserve continuity. Music videos are great training grounds, you can get away with anything and make mistakes that won't seem like mistakes. Many people got their start that way, Roger Deakins amongst them! That said, I hope to see more narrative stuff. I've been liking many of the short docs you've done, and I'm really interested in seeing how you tackle more-or-less conventional productions. By the way, I suppose you already know him, but if you like colour temperature contrast, I suggest looking up Robby Müller. You can see interesting light sources mixing in his cityscapes. Check out also the documentary feature about him: Living the Light, which I've been told is a must. Wew! That was long! I hope you made it to the end!
We ran the blondes off of 2 separate circuits in the chapel just to be safe. If you're ever in doubt you can ask a location for a wiring diagram, and what they can run on their mains. As this place was a film/photography location they also had big 3 phase power, so if we had wanted bigger lights then we could have! Yeah I plan to work on a variety of different projects next year. Commericals, narrative, music video. Everything to help me expand my skills!
@@Mumbo That's the most important thing, to get out there and get experience. Coming out of school, I struggle with how to find anything to do. Anyway best of luck on the new year and thee new projects.
Did you use a plugin or overlays to help emulate the super 8 look? This music video inspired me to work on a film project with similar flash-back memories/ 'SPICE' elements. Thank you! I can't wait to see what you put out when lockdown lifts!
I find using natural light is very underrated, a lot of people tend to want to block out light coming out of windows, but here I see that wasn't credible and you turned a possible problem into a stylistic choice. At the same time a lot of people are really afraid of mixing colour temperatures of lights. Honestly if you used the same colour temperature lights, I think you would have lost a lot of contrast, definition of skin tones and would have flattened out the image more creating non cinematic tones and possibly making the artist look unflattering. I usually just apply colour gels to lights, but this is seems like a viable (and distinct) alternative/ choice. This is some great work, Mumbo keep it up!
Yeah that was my thoughts too! Was a bit of a risk on the day as although it looked great in my head, I wasn't sure if it was going to work out. Playing with colour contrast is good fun though. Gelling lights to odd combinations and just seeing how it looks in your spare time is always a fun pass time (at least for me, as I am odd)
