In this video, we explore creativity, and what makes you a creative person. I have always struggled with identifying as a creative, a creator, or anyone with any level of creativity! I was always described as a logical person, and I think this comes down to the creative avenues I was exposed to when I was young, and the narrow minded view of the 'creative fields' we have currently. Filmmaking, Photography, Painting, Fine art, Sculpting are all considered creative arts - But there is much more to creativity than those disciplines, and I think people would feel much more comfortable calling themselves creative if we expanded the group 100 fold. Stop asking yourself 'am I creative?' because you almost definitely are.

In that same vein, I roll my eyes when I see fellow video producers called themselves "Creatives" in their bio. Because there's an implicit gatekeeping mentality to that word. As you said, if you're a cook, an engineer, a teacher - anyone and everyone is creative in some respect.
Exactly. It’s the holding on a pedestal which bothers me (and that’s coming from someone who could call themselves a conventional ‘creative’).
(Very much a personal opinion) I personally do not really like the definition of art as just music, drawing, sculpting, painting etc. I think sports are a form of art. In my opinion even doing LOGIC puzzles is an art. I do said Logic puzzles for fun and I can still consider myself a creative person.
@@evaseq2238 I agree. Martial Arts even has "art" in it. Learning how to put someone into a chokehold, or throw someone twice your weight, or slice them up with a sword, definitely requires creativity to apply it to the situation. The football teams stage their players in different spots, the baseball pitchers spin the ball a certain way, etc.
@@josephschubert6561 I agree, I happen to be really good at fighting with a staff or sword similar to darth maul's and I can fight really well with it and people call me a nerdy and I'm just an obsessive star wars geek and stuff but they don't understand that it actually takes time and skill to learn
@@josephschubert6561 Equestrianism is creative. Believe it or not there is an art to learning to trust and love a 1200lb animal. Not every training method works for every horse. I am forced to come up with new ideas every day even for my first (and current) project just to teach him that the hose can't hurt him.
I feel like Mumbo literally does the most creative things. He is a filmmaker, photographer, AND plays a game that is based around the idea of being creative.
It's all about the head game, trust me, i know.
I myself seem to fight an endless battle with myself, all sorts of things and thoughts coming around, buzzing in my head, telling me this or that.
It's like I'm constantly pulled in two directions.
The real trouble is, trying to figure out which one to go in.
And once you've got it figured out, continuing in it.
This is so true! I catch myself and others saying that all the time.
I think people confuse "creativity" with "talent". For example, I am very bad at painting. But, if I had a canvas and some paint, I know exactly what I would paint right now, and I could describe it to you in great detail. The problem is, no one else would know what I meant it to be because it would be some blobs of color 😊
Like you said though, just because you are not good at something, or you think you would never be good at it, doesn't mean you should stop trying other things!! Great video Mumbo!
Good thinking. I never used to consider myself a creative person since I totally suck at all forms of visual art, however it wasn't a lack of creativity holding me back, but a lack of talent!
Seriously tho, that's really important, it ties in with the whole way society says something is only worth doing if it makes you money - if you're not good enough to make money from something don't bother. BS. Enjoyment is so much more important, everyone needs a hobby and a creative outlet! You don't need to be good, you need to like doing it, it needs to make you happy. And also, you have to start doing it poorly to learn the skills to get better! There are (disgusting, wonderful lovely people) who can just pick up a new skill and are immediately amazing, but most of us have to work on skills. But you don't keep painting bad paintings in the hope of eventually getting good enough to sell them, keep painting because you enjoy painting. The process is important not the result.
Talent is relative. Talent is nothing without practice. Even the most "talented" person is nothing if they're not practicing what they want to be talented at.
@@thereluctantchef2204 I agree!!
When your house is done can you do another day in the life?
Yes please.
Yeah! We haven't yet had a proper house tour of your new house, Mumbo!
Yes!!!!!
At my school film wasn't considered art and they made me take a sculpture class even tho I was in advanced film. Sorry just watching this made me think of that it still annoys me lol
yeah. At all schools the meaning of art is either drawing or sculpting and that's it. Just because i am terrible at those things doesn't mean I'm not artistic. I do photography, my profile pic used to be black and white but I colored it in adobe photoshop, some of my classmates do music, some do digital art; all of that is art.
@@imblack011wow your pfp is amazing
As I'm watching this video, it has -1 dislike, I don't know how that's possible, but well done, your like to dislike ratio is over 100%
Society made sure that a person who made a short film on his new beast PC does not think himself as creative because he was good at maths and physics...
Even the act of building a beast PC can be considered creative.
"and I was terrible at all of those 3 things" I felt that. except I suck at math too lol
God, stop.
I got momentarily exited when I saw Lucas the Spider.
Same lol
The best thing is, that being good at maths means that you are creative (for problem solving in any way you need to be creative)
Me too
As my engineering professor said when I first met him: Engineering is all about creativity. There wouldn't be any new inventions or innovations without it.
It happens to a lot of people. The fact that you use your influence to speak about this honors you. Keep being so true to your self and the rest. Love your videos. Definitely a creative person! ;)
I used to not think I was creative, then I took up graphic design and DnD and I’ve never felt more creative
Alternate title: Saying creative for 4 minutes straight
And we watched it
Yeah 🤣
i've been watching you for almost 5 years now, i always knew you had a second channel where you made films, i never thought it would be something i was interested in, and always saw it as a neat hobby of yours that wasn't my thing, low and behold, this year im a year 12 going to A levels and picked film studies, and i JUST realized, im doing the thing i never thought would be my thing, and through this video all your pass video flashed in my head, and i understood that its a similarity i share with you, someone that i look up to in every possible way, and that makes me like and understand film making even more deeply, thank you for being here, and for reading my long comment.
Very cool story. :)
hey, okay, i really needed to hear this. i also was better at math and "logical" things over artistic things and i used to say i wasn't creative as well. i came to this realization, that i am creative and that all things humans do are creative, a little while ago, but hearing it from another person is just. so amazing. this has really made my day
Creative. You're creating something. When you've created something, you are a creator.
That moment you can't like a video twice :(
As a guy in the audio field, this hits home. Literally almost everything that I do could be considered creative, but isn't a lot of the time.
I can relate to this 100%
I am a software engineer (well not quite yet) and I've always struggled with making art. However, this video sums up how I've felt in the past. I never felt like a creative person. I started experimenting with some art forms.
I can now say that I am a writer and composer. I began writing essays and I came to the point where I wrote a book over, functionally, a weekend. I compose music constantly.
Even things that are technical, such as software development, are works of art. That last bit something I emphasize a lot. People, generally, don't see art in many art form. For example, Martial Arts are still art. Software Engineering works the same way. The creation of software requires design. Designing software and systems is a form of art. Even, for a big example, war can be considered an art. However, it does involve many people dying.
Look at almost anything, and it can probably be considered an art.
programing is my excuse to say 'I\'m being logicly creative'
Crazy how much I needed to hear this today.
POV: You came to see the -1 dislike and got disappointed it's gone
Wut??
As an avid programmer I totally agree that writing code is a creative pursuit! I would compare writing code to that of an author writing a story or narrative. The only big difference is that authors construct characters in addition to a plot, whereas programmers only have to write code, which analogous to the plot of a story in which computers are the characters.
Thanks for the inspiration, Mumbo! Keep being ... creative!
I clicked on this thinking about making memes and then mumbo mentions spending your evening making memes is creative :)
Creativity is someone everybody struggle with. But I feel like everybody can aspire to be creative
I feel called out! I'm literally in CS and programming resonates so much with me cuz I don't have to think about it, while art and music also resonate with me but I can't find the motivation to make anything and that's why i don't call myself a creative person.
Programming a game can be seen as logical... but to figure out a perfect way for the mechanics to work, to figure out how everything behaves and interacts, to come up with a system to function... all of that is also creative.
over the years, the only thing that change sin mumbo was his hair.
Well to be fair he's also put on a bit of weight judging from this video. Probably just due to lockdown tho like the rest of us.

Thanks for the pep talk, coach!
For some reason i am now telling myself how everything you just said proves that i am not creative but very inspiring great work!
Wow that’s deep man
I'm like a mash of the 2. Logical but creative. Then again I can't do much of either 😂
Exactly! Don't define yourself with labels mate :)
I completely agree with this. I've always been told that since I'm good at subjects like maths and science, I must be a logical person so I specifically try to get better at the "creative" subjects. Creativity isn't a talent you're born with; it's a skill which you can build and develop through practice.
Honestly, as a programmer, I love the creative side of it. After all, all of programming is ultimately designing solutions to problems, and that's definitely an area in which creativity is a huge necessity.
Mumbo: I’m good at maths
Also mumbo: I’m in the one brain cell squad
Thanks, Mumbo, I really needed this. I've always had this mindset, so for someone I admire so much to say 'you ARE creative' means the world. Thank you
Thank you for this. I struggle with the same, but am lucky enough that people around me recognize software development as an art and appreciate it, even if years of conditioning make it hard for me to see the same thing all the time.

Hi i like what you are doing keep it going
In first through third grade my teachers said I had no imagination. Now I know I am creative after creating several games and being able to write stories for Swedish class and getting a high grade on them😊
wow mumbo. i don’t know why but hearing this has changed my mind on everything, recently got into photography and have been so hard on myself about not being “creative”. I can catch myself looking at other peoples work (yours included) with jealousy wishing i had that ability.I think this video has proven to me that I do have the ability, i just need to be kind and patient with myself starting off my work
All human minds work the same; the difference is in experiences and memories throughout life. And life is like RPG - you start from 0 and level up skills that you spend time on. If you want to be more creative, just do creative things, and this skill will level up.
This is a great way to explain this! I was thinking the same thing and was going to comment it but I couldn't put it into words
What you don't really know is that all this time he was talking in mimecraft terms, he's in survival rn
Mumbo, I've been trying to describe this for a while. I've gone through this throughout my degree, telling people that I'm working on the "technical" side of the TV industry, and I'm not creative enough to do anything else. This is an incredibly inspiring video, as I know I can be creative, but sorta "box" myself in. Really good video.
This is such a good, eye-opening video! I can relate to everything you said. I’ve noticed that I have let my self-label of being “not creative” sometimes prevent me from going all-out into creative things that I enjoy (photography).

I have a wonderful friend who is the ‘logical smart one’ (recently got offered a place for physics at Oxford). Not only is she a brilliant drawer and none of us ever really knew it until recently, but one time to dry out her clothes after being in the rain she wanted to put her overalls in the microwave. Not sure why the last bit was relevant but point is you aren’t defined by whatever label you are given 💛
Couldn't agree more to that last statement
This video definitely voiced some of my own feelings about myself. I am happy to say that I am discovering how I can be creative, and become happy with what I create, after many years of saying to myself "I'm not a creative person," just like Mumbo did.

Yeah, couldn't tell you how much I needed to hear this. Thank you, Mumbo!
To be honest i got this video in my recommended section at the exact right time for Valentine's day! I'm now at least trying to see myself as a creative person and start working on a present! Thanks for the video Mumbo!
I was rewatching this just because I think you made some really good points here, and I realised that I'm just as creative in my technical engineering job as I am when I'm making digital art. At work we solve problems creatively every day, and without that creativity I don't think we'd get much done at all!
I feel the same, I work in theatre as a lighting technician, I don't consider myself creative while also working in a traditionally artsy environment. I think it's something to do with the approach to creativity. The element of installing a lighting rig or approaching camera work behind the scenes seems to distance us from the idea of being creative.
Excellent message, thank you! 💓💓💓
Aw, Mumbo, this is wonderful.
There is a huge benefit to be taken in endeavouring not to label yourself based on what you believe you cannot do.
People think that creating beautiful things is the territory of the creative people, and don't have the time or the skill to undertake things like that.
Really it's a question of bravery.
To solve any problems or do anything new, you have to take that step into the unknown and create something out of your own wits plus what you have around you.
Thank you for your invitation to be brave.
I needed this. Thanks mumbo👍
I really needed to hear this, thank you
