'What Camera Should I buy?' is a question I get A LOT. So I thought I would run through my priority list of what I look for in a camera in 2020. I explain key terms such as Codec, What's Dynamic Range and what camera has the best Colour Science, discuss importance of resolution, and what makes a camera cinematic. I have experience with a number of cameras - from RED Scarlet W and Ursa Mini Pro G2, through to pocket cinema cameras, SONY A7R's and Canon EOS R's, as well as a bunch of SUPER8mm bits!

Thanks for getting me interested Mumbo! I've seen this sponsor many times but I never tried it.
Hey
I heard that if you shoot in 4k and then compress it into 1080p, it makes it look more smooth and a lot better. Is that true?
the amount of plants in your house makes it feel like the air is real fresh
he got a gf lols
@MCMaster564 The Awesome yea why its matter
@@noggly6308 what's that got to do with the plants?
Mumbo: High dynamic range over resolution because if i have 4k....

You should buy a Reeses Cup Camera 1989 Limited Edition.
That’s a thing-
Agree
I was literally just looking for cameras the timing of this video is PERFECT
The timing of that ad on 4:38 is perfect
This is the most comprehensive explanation of camera fundamentals I’ve seen in a long time, this stuff took me a while to figure out when I started!
I found this really interesting! I'm not huge on cinematography myself. Don't get me wrong, if I could do it I would, but I don't have the proper equipment or the money for proper equipment. All I have is one of those cheap tourist cameras that you can get at the convenience store. Also I lack in creative juices, but we'll skip over that. But this has definitely been super intriguing!
Putting that aside, I have some friends who are really into cinematography and cameras and whatnot, so I'll be directing them to this for sure! Thank you!
@Toby Austen thank you dude :)
If you want to get into cinematography, just do it, even though you don't have the equipment. I made my first films with my old phone (360 p I believe) but it was so much fun and I learnt a lot. Also, using cheap tourist cameras could give a very nice effect on the film, depending on the story you're telling :)
Why am i watching this when im not interested in cameras?
same
because it's MUMBO 😂👍
Mumbo’s epic voice is the reason, 99% guarantee
Cuz it's Mumbo Jumbo
Because you're interested in Mumbo! 😎
I might need this in the future
You haven't even watched the video yet
@@nateovision does it matter? He clicked at least, the fact hes here like 11' in means the notifications are on. Does it truly matter?
@@nateovision read his comment again, never says he has
@@TheRedNaxelaUA-cam How can he make a judgement on something he hasn't actually experienced
Nateovision same way you can experience being nervous, you don’t know what can happen, but the way you feel about it is uneasy, he has a good feeling about the video, he’s probably a fan/has enjoyed mumbos content before, or has took one/many pieces of mumbos advice and it’s payed off, and they also said they *might* need this in the future, no guarantee anyways, kinda weird you feel that way ngl
me who don't know anything about these things but also love mumbo explaining it.
I’m thinking on getting a camera in the future so yeah
Even tho I'm not a photographer and that I'll ever use a camera I still like to sit down and hear about these kinds of things, no Matter how nerdy it sounds I'd always like to see how something is made and hear about a person's opinion on what others should do to find what there asking. It's also very inspiring for younger or long time artist when they see a beautiful photo of someone, or just in general of a documentary! It really helps to learn more about the artist of all and many ❤❤❤👍👍👍
Nice mumbo!! I started to take pictures with my phone recently and i love seeing my picture getting likes in social medias uwu
Thanks! Me and my friends make Lego stop motions and we want to learn how to get the best picture.
I genuinely don't know anything about filming and stuff but I still watch these very technical videos even if I barely understand what are you talking about, because it's so good to see you talking about something you're passionate about. This video really made my day, thank you!
As an aspiring cinematographer who is also a tech nerd, thank you for this. I always love your camera videos/films
This is really useful! Thanks Mumbo!

I understood almost none of this video, but I loved it
This is really helpful, thank you, Mumbo! ^-^
Also, your house is so aesthetically decorated! :D
Ik a lot of other people have said this, but I see you around everywhere
I just love your colour grading.
As someone who doesn't know anything yet about filming but is very interested in getting into it, that was very well done. Concise, really understandable for a profane like me; like I never heard most of the technical terms until now but I understood what they stand for. Now I know I have to research these terms to understand them in-depth and what they imply when filming, and I already have pointers for a first camera from someone whose filming I love. Your work is incredible and you're very talented, I hope you get more and more interesting professional projects to work on, you deserve it! Maybe one day you'll be the one making a course on Skillshare :D
Ummmm, mumbo you should have also mentioned log profiles. As they can also help to hold information within the codec (some cheaper cameras now also have log).
That falls under dynamic range though. All a Log profile is doing is allowing you to shoot with more dynamic range :)

I'm not a cinema guy, but loved this video.
Your pacing, editing and story telling keeps being me back. Thanks for another great video!
This is nice. Thanks!
This was great! Thanks Oli!!
This was extremely helpful, thank you!
Matti and Roger Deakins in the same Mumbo video??? HELL YEAH
Love the wide aspect ratio
Skillshere? Pttttthhhhh. Mumbos videos😍
This was very interesting, thanks Mumbo!
Yes
I've always been pretty into photography and shot films and stuff. The most experience I have is just casual pictures and setting up school year books over the years, different small events for friends and stuff. The cameras I currently use, a Nikon and a Canon (cant remember the numbers, not really important). Fantastic cameras but fairly old. Definitely gonna have to take some of this into consideration when I inevitably have to replace them.
Thanks Dude, that helps a lot actually
I combine my phone's camera and a gopro hero 5 black for my BMX and MTB footage. It works fine to share with friends and showing lines/actions that improve my placement (in a race).
Great video Mumbo!
I'm chuff to bits seeing that you posted this video
Yay 500k subs!!!
god I need this
This is really helpful
Oooooo I saw clips from Dark. Insanely beautiful show.
I love these types of videos.
I think im in love with cameras
Mumbo talks about cameras
Me: p l a n t s 👁👄👁
Same list here, Codecs and DR over resolution any day :). Even though I have the bmpcc6k I still shoot UHD.
Normally I skip ads but Bec it's Mumbo's I will not :)
*cries in iPhone camera*
I heard this quote before, “the best camera is the one you have” trash me if this is wrong
ay yes mumbo this was rlly interesting
I would love to see a video of how to get started in the filmaking business
hallo from germany. I`m watchingt you since 2 years now and you`re a so coll contentcreator. Love You

I got so excited when I saw the video I literally screamed.

For a starter like me this is important thank you
can you do a house tour? I think that's a great idea! also, love ur vids bud :)
very helpful!
Mumbo your the best
I'm about to pull the trigger on a c300 mark iii. upgrading from my c200
Amazing video! But what is the piece of music at the start?
Mumbo you should do a new studio tour video.
Think you’d love playing with an Alexa classic if you can get your hands on one. Lower res but the same Alev 3 sensor as in the modern arri cameras (until the Alexa 35 releases with alev 4)
Downside is, it is a bit of a beast size wise
Can you make a video on how you modded the anamorphic lens?
Great info! You touched on this a little, but I don’t think it got its own category. That’s usability. Most of the consumer/prosumer level cameras can be operated by a single op, but many of the higher end stuff need rigged up and typically require a team of at least 2 people. If you are a single op then you are probably topping off at a red as the ceiling.
The OG pocket has been. With me for soon to be 3 years and I barely used it. Recently got a lens for it that is pretty rare and I want to make use of it.
As I like the form factor I wanted to ask you what your solution is? Stabilized glass or small rig/glide cam? I dislike the idea of a gimbal.
My only camera is the canon M50.. I'm making due, but definitely hope to upgrade ad some point.
Fijufilm instax disposable camera, you don’t get much better than that mumbo.
I do agree with resolution being a lower priority I would much rather take good 4K or even REALLY good 1080 over 8K unless I started REALLY doing VFX work as the extra detail for that stuff is great for mapping the effects to the scene
Blackmagic is having its golden year. They have released so many new products that have been very well received by the public.
Nice video👍
By the way, what camera should i buy?
My dream is to shoot a feature film in kodak 35mm. Awwwww can't beat the colour of authentic film.
I do find it quite amusing that you're getting asked the same questions as I do working in IT. What should I buy? Well... it depends!
500000 subs on the second channel congrats
Mumbo you should do a Q&A
Your house looks super cool
The Blackmagic pocket cinema looks amazing, and i know this sounds silly compared to everything else on this list, but even thats super expensive!
Resolution does matter, I upgraded from a 384x288 to a 640x480 today and it makes a difference. The pixels are smaller and the noise might be worse. But the detail is there. I just have to get the DR and the codec fixed and do some side by side.
Current I got other issues with it.
Yay
I’m not too interested in film or cameras, but this was very informative!
Hi mumbo, just want to say that you have a nice voice :>
Im getting a Nikon D3500 for future shootings :) Cant wait to upgrade from this canon!
How do u do this... this is amazing
Hey Mumbai you should make a bid for what for camera should I buy
thx i was thinking of trying to start a short film :0
I really like the SONY one, but need to find a good zoom vlogging lens
I like the zoomed in screen to fill my entire screen without cutting anything of
Where would you rate sensor crop on your priority list? Having been privileged to use the Alexa XT in class, I don't think I could go and use a camera with crop sensor at different resolutions or shooting speeds. It annoys me greatly. How do you feel about it?
Have you use a XA10 before? Ita my favorite camera
Panasonic s5 checks off most boxes for me 10 bit 422 ,raw ,14+ stops of dynamic range and its full frame and I plus Panasonic has good colors
Fuji xt20?
Thoughts?
When I make mini-films I just use a compact flip-camera, this should help out for other choices
Do you use any DJI cameras, like the Ronan series? Do you ever use drones for your videos, and if you do, what drones do you use?
