Marvel Fighting game collection comes out.
SGB: "MEGAMAN CO OP!!"
For those who don't know, in Power Battle Fighters, *_everybody_* can charge their busters, including Duo
and having a shoryuken
@@picawoodMega Man's Shoryuken (Mega Upper) is exclusive to him in the Power Fighters. Proto Man has Blues Strike, Bass has Flash Kick, and I think Duo has three-hit combo punch.
Also Power Fighters has a VS Mode in the PS2 Version.
@@esmooth919 charge them how many dollars?
So the “Mega” name for Mega Man actually dates back to Powered Up on PSP, and it was awkward there too.
One thing I like about Proto Man’s name is that “Blues” is a precursor to Rock and Roll musically too
We always thought that when she called him Mega in 11, it was just a nickname or a superhero nickname of sort.
Powered Up we think was probably just a localization error.
She also called him "Mega" in the Ruby Spears cartoon. There, it was a nickname, and his real name was still Rock.
@@Cartoonguy133 He was never called Rock in the RS cartoon
@@GoGojiraGo He was in the first episode before he became Mega Man.
@@thevenomspino No its because Dr Light actually goes "Mega... yeah thats it, From now on your name will be MEGAMAN!" which is word for word what he says in Japanese.
Its a little funny oneliner that just had no real smooth way to get localized correctly at all
Fun fact: this game is pretty much the only time Zero is brought up in the classic universe meaning that this weird spin off is important to the entire megaman timeline.
Wasn't it also the first time it was officially confirmed that Wily built Zero?
@@syxodude91 Yea it came out 2 years before X4, also shows that Wily started work on Zero after 7 which makes sense for multiple reasons (Bass’s failure, Megaman almost killing him etc.)
That was 2
@@landon29 got my games mixed up, regardless this was the first time the connection was officially confirmed between wily and zero
Power Battle was given an arcade release in the west, CONSOLE wise, when it first came to consoles, you can unlock it in the Megaman Anniversary Collection
I'm sure the English option was just there for export of the original arcade machine. There were games like "SegaSonic Popcorn Shop" that have English menus specifically for operation outside of Japan (e.g. Hong Kong, Philippines, Indonesia).
I’m laughing my ass off every time I hear them do the Dr. Light voice from 8 😂😂😂
That wasn't even the first or last time Dr. Light was voiced by someone. Light just can't live that voice down, can he?
@@ChazStarkey-c3zNever.
Weakness order (Route 1):
Guts Man: Crash Bomb
Ice Man: Super Arm
Heat Man: Ice Slasher
Wood Man: Atomic Fire (The only proper weakness here...)
Cut Man: Leaf Shield
Crash Man: Rolling Cutter
Yellow Devil: Super Arm (I believe)
Wily Machine No. Uncanon (Route 1): Rolling Cutter
It's not uncommon for fire-based Robot Masters (or Mavericks) to be weak to ice or wind weapons in the _Mega Man_ series. Plus, Guts Man's weakness is literally bombs, hence the Crash Bomb.
I'll forgive Elliot not knowing heat man was a Zippo lighter more than Johnny not knowing the cut mans weakness being scissors being weak to stone reference
4:35 It's just a big localization error. In Japan, Rockman's friends call him Rock, both because it's his real name and/or for short-hand. But since Megaman is almost never outside his battle-form, and probably didn't want to confuse the kiddies, the just call him Mega all the time.
The Legends games had the same issue, with them just auto-corrected "Rock" into "Megaman". Even went as far as changing backstory lore to explain it.
"Why is jump circle?"
Because circle is to the Japanese what X is to the West.
I wouldn’t mind more PVE Smackdown Sundays.
Saaameee. It's a PvE game but they Were giving the "smackdown" to the enemies so it fits.
Crash Man's weakness is Cortex Man
_But, Great Uka Uka......_
... *_bandicoot!_*
Nope. That's the wrong Crash Man.
Crash man's weaknesses is the cortex vortex
The “Mega” name started with Power Up, I think Capcom just let Ian Flynn use Rock and Blues for the Archie comic cause he wanted to
How about a Smackdown Sunday on Jojo’s Bizzare Adventure on Dreamcast?
I feel like they might have played that game already, but I could be wrong
@@esmooth919 no they haven't
How about Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball 😋
Hey! My dentist’s office had this game (technically it was in a collection of Capcom games) in it! Crazy Taxi and Sonic the Fighters was there too
0:19 It was given an english release, but only in Southeast Asia. It wouldn't be released in North American until the PS2 Anniversary Collection in 2006, and Europe via the Capcom Arcade 2nd Stadium, which is what you're playing rn.
Iirc, it's also in the GameCube release as well.
@@fodv93 I honestly forgot it was also on Gamecube-
@OtakuDeCarnitas109 Yeah, but they swapped the buttons. B to jump and A to shoot.
I had a lot of fun with this game when I unlocked it in the Mega Man Anniversary Collection. I liked the second game Power Fighters. Fun fact: Power Fighters was the first game to introduce the Mega Man's uppercut move the Mega Upper. Which he later got in Marvel vs. Capcom and Super Smash Bros.
Honestly MM7 is my fav of the classics
"I dunno why MM7 gets the rep that it does."
You can thank Brentalfloss for that.
Something to note is that both the Mega Man arcade games would eventually get released as a compilation for the Neo Geo Pocket Color, and then got a switch rerelease back in 2022. They're pretty faithful, so in terms of gameplay there's not much to see but I find the sprite art and music a little more charming.
I played this so much at my dentist office! They had an arcade cabinet of this in there.
I remember this game from my local bowling alley's arcade. Shoutouts to Wagon Wheel.
0:18 iirc both the power fighters games were re-released in the anniversary collection and thats how most people gave played them outside emulators
Also, if you want an actual competitive mega man fighter....well you wont find a competitive one but mega man 7's 2 player battle mode exists
Personally mega man 7 is one of my favorites, but i feel like its strength to me (the x style stage exploration ocassionally) is a weakness because its not the nes simplicity appeal, while still being slower than an actual X game.
4:46 powered up did that too and it's so weird that 4 kept his name as rock but modern games think the translated name change needs to be kept in the age of the internet
Mega Man Power Fighters, the sequel has a Versus 1v1 mode. But it's in the PS2 version of the game.
We think the idea now with the Rock and Mega name is, Rock is Megaman actual name, and Mega is either a nickname or a superheroish nickname that Roll will call him when he is Megaman. At least when it comes to 11. Powered Up we 100% think was a localization error.
It's fascinating seeing more official MM7 styled sprites
And for some reason, they decided to include some fairly important lore implications in these games. Even though it’s a basic arcade mini game of sorts
That’d be like having a kingdom hearts game that’s Tetris styled, and it holds the lore as to the forging of keyblades
Woah, I remember playing this game back in the Anniversary Collection on GameCube years ago
This was so fun to see them play, I'd honestly love to see them play the sequel to this game in the future
Man John's opinions on Mega Man games have changed since his marathon and that was only...ten years ago Jesus.
How so?
I’m glad you’re still doing Smackdown Sunday I’ve been watching your Smackdown Sunday videos since 2013
Welp, Time to do this over again but with the next set of Robot Masters next week~
@0:19 This game (and the sequel) actually received its first home English release as part of the Mega Man Anniversary Collection on the PS2, GaemCube, and Xbox. I'm pretty sure there was never a PSP version. I'm guessing this version is the Capcom Arcade 2nd Stadium release, which to be honest I had no idea this game was on that until I looked it up. I remember finally unlocking this in the Anniversary Collection and thinking it was so cool (both this and the sequel had to be unlocked in that collection, unlike the other 8 main line games which didn't have to be).
Looking back at _The Power Battle_ (and _The Power Fighters_ especially), I always wonder... _why is there no definitive modern _*_Mega Man_*_ fighting game?_ There are so many Robot Masters now - _the recipe for success is there!_
And yes, there's a fan-made fighter called *Mega Man Arena.* But it only has a fraction of Robot Masters available.
I having a vague memory seeing this as a kid. For the longest I thought this was mvc
Killing Wily Capsule at the end there is simply for a large score bonus to whomever lands the finishing blow
The Dr light voice from the mega man 8 review always cracks me up.
I'm pretty sure megaman powered up also referred to Megaman as "mega" too
When's Mahvel?
If you ever need a short Mega Man-related Smackdown Sunday, Mega Man 7 has the hidden Mega Man vs Bass mode.
But Power Battles & Power Fighters are neat games. It's always interesting when a console game gets the arcade treatment (even if it doesn't always go well, in Haunted Castle's case).
4:30 That was started in Powered Up, though I'm surprised that 11 kept that.
The Power Battle was playable via the anniversary collection back in the 2000s
For a second I thought Wily was gonna instakill you like the final boss of x8 or a summoned creature from a final fantasy game
Aw man, you guys said Mega Man co-op game and now that's all I can think about. I don't even have anyone I could play that with and I would STILL play the fuck out of that!
This was an unexpected thing. I hope we can see Power Battle 2
It's called _Mega Man 2: The Power Fighters._
@@alexfischer7876 So you want to see the sequel as well?
@@Shantae1188
Probably.
This game was playable inside the Street Fighter 6 arcade, which is how I played it for the first time
9:30 Okay... so there were _Yellow Devil MK-II_ from Mega Man 3, _Dark Moon_ from Game Boy Mega Man V, _Green Devil_ from Mega Man 8 / Mega Man & Bass, _Twin Devil_ from Mega Man 9, _Block Devil_ from Mega Man 10, and _Yellow Devil MK-III_ from Mega Man 11. Twin and Block Devils might be the most obnoxious ones.
And no, _Shadow Devil_ is *Mega Man X* series territory. It should be purely _Classic series_ kind of question.
Was not expecting this!
I didn't know this game even existed until I looked at the games in Capcom Arcade Stadium 2
This was indeed a video of all time
This is also in the mega Man collection 10 anniversary because I remember playing this on the Xbox
Oh, it definitely had a US release. I played it at a local arcade when I was a kid. No idea if it was the CPS1 or 2 version though. I also remember it having a charge shot for everyone. With Bass's being huge.
Cps1, iirc there is a cps2 version but was japan only
This first got a home release in the Anniversary Collection on Gamecube/PS2/Xbox, there was never a vs mode arcade Megaman but 7 has a hidden fighting mode you might be interested in
But Megaman Arena is the Megaman fighting game you're looking for, it's a free Smash Bros clone fangame
If you guys decide to play the sequel, you're able to do a charge shot and holding up while releasing a charge shot will let them do a quick small special move like Mega Man naturally gets an uppercut and Bass does the flash kick.
The Rock and Mega thing is always an interesting choice that I don't know who is in charge of that localization aspect because both Powered Up and 11 refer to him as Mega as a human but then the Archie comics called him Rock and then there's the Fully Charged show which called him Aki Light and Roll as she is doesn't exist.
I remember playing this on my capcom home arcade console so it was a fun game
If you guys ever go back to racing game, Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed would be a cool pick. Man, I wish there was a new game being made..
11:40 _Secretly,unknowntoMegaman,BreakmanisactuallyhisolderbrotherBlueswhosupposedlydisappearedyearsago,butheactuallydidn't._
Oh hey, it's that arcade spinoff that came out the same year as MM7 and thus, recycled character sprites from that game. I've heard a lot about this game and its sequel, but surprisingly, Clement never talked about them despite being available on the Anniversary Collection. Now that I think about it, he didn't talk about Mega Man Soccer, Super Adventure Rockman, Mega Man Battle & Chase, or even the WonderSwan port of Mega Man & Bass either.
Hope they do more of this and Power Fighters.
Actually this game was released for the first aniversary collection.
I first discovered this game via the Mega Man Anniversary Collection on PS2 (I imagine a good number of people did that way). It's not a complicated game and it's nothing out of this world, but I've always liked it and I hope you guys end up doing the sequel at some point.
the 3 routes are actually a bit different, each one is actually a different difficulty! First path is easy, Second path is medium and 3rd path is... actually gimmicky but still harder on principle of being the megaman 7 robots.
The castle even gets a different boss guarding it for path 3 (The pumpkin from shademan's stage) instead of 2 different variants of Yellow Devil
Damn this video was quick
I think mega man 7 is underrated.
Least favorite devil monster was the rainbow devil in mega man zero 1
Yeah, it's fine. It has like the worst final boss in the series, though
Both Power Battle and Power Fighter were released on the Anniversary Collection that was on Gamecube PS2 and X Box I have no idea why they never re released them again it should have been on Legacy Collection
love to see johnny do his playthroughs of megaman again.(powered up had the "mega" nickname too and i agree i hate it too.)
love playing the power fighters games on the anniversary collection(especially 2/wish roll was playable.),enjoyed the visuals(especially the darkstalkers vibes esque city in protoman's ending that i wish capcom did more megaman games in this style.:3)/music & both games foreshadowing the x series.(dr. light talking about x's technology difference to classic/zero being foreshadowed to being made which was shown in 2.)
interesting seeing johnny's opinion of 7 now as yeah compared to x/8 find it lackluster if still charming in areas.
The true smackdown sunday were the friends we made along the way
I played this and its sequel on the Anniversary Collection a bunch- both games are similar, though the second one does have some specials you can do by holding up and releasing a charged buster shot.
Also, defeating Wily at the end during the last countdown is just for a point bonus and getting to see Wily grovel. I’m pretty sure it doesn’t change the ending.
There's also this Japanese PS2 game that has both arcade games, and I THINK the version of Power Battle on that has a better soundtrack, which was used for the PS1 releases of 1-6 and then the Anniversary Collection
@@Scorpionspear77 The second one has a vs mode, but on PS2.
That's not all to this game though. There's still the Mega Man 3-6 bosses and the 7 bosses. And the Wily fortress bosses are different too.
The problem is they're doing it as a Smackdown Sunday, not an actual let's play
I hope you're gonna do Power Fighters next because it's even better
this game is sick!
Super Fighting Robots.
Bass is so much better.
Why's Air Man not playable.
Miller Brian Hernandez Jose Wilson David
7:22 just can’t ever escape it can i

Martin Jason White Christopher Harris Timothy
oh yes
So I don't know where else to talk about this so I might as well do it here. I watched the video for the panel at pax east and hilariously they messed up Greg's and Matt's name cards on the video resulting in Matt being labeled as Uncle Matt.
Just fyi, you can rebind the controls however you like. I’m assuming you are playing the Capcom stadium collections?
Ayyy, the weird Mega Man fighting game. Y'all should play 2. Also there is a vs mode to fight each other in extra mode. But its mainly in Power Fighters which is 2.
the VS mode is only in the ps2 version that's only released in japan
@@alex_-yz9to Oh Booooo, I forgot it was japan only. How are they gonna figure that out? They can emulate that game but I wonder if the PS2 version has an English patch.
i love heatman
Herro
If you want a co op megaman style game play 30XX
so you beat the easy mode robot masters, are you going to go and fight the others?
i am glad you guys at least figured out how to do charge attacks and at least one of you figured out how to slide.
Is there a MegaMan game like this where you can choose the bosses as well... because if not there should be.
The sequel: Power Fighters. Just like this one, there's 3 different routes, and each one has its own set of bosses.
You get to choose which boss you fight, and Dr. Light will give hints as to which boss is weak to which specific weapon.
@@Blayne06 can you actually play as the bosses, I'm talking more like a marvel vs Capcom fighter but with bosses and mega man and company
@@xecuter87 Unfortunately, no. The closest we've got is Powered Up on the PSP -- beat the boss with just the Buster, and you can unlock them as playable characters.
Well this was a pleasant surprise
I'd rather play 7 over 8 to be honest
Mante Loaf
Megaman Soccer when?
Martin Patricia Jackson Helen Martin Eric
Oh can you guys Play lethal league blaze on here
hi
So Mega Man had 2 arcade games. Mega Man 2: The Power Fighters is the one that's more of a traditional fighter.
There was also a SAMPLE version of the 'Power Battle' game, as Cutting Room Floor documented. That board was CPS2-based and had Qsound enhancements along with more speech (in Japan, export versions cut out most of the speech).
The sequel is definitely NOT a fighter. Its the same as this game, but with a little more content.
