Can we use Nikor Professional DX lenses like 17-55mm f/2.8g and 85mm 1.4D with this zfc camera..?? Does this camera have the same controls like any DSLR or it would be problematic for a professional user..??What you say can we use it professionally for event, weddings and bridal photoshoots etc??
I didn't buy the fc with the kit lens as I had several f mounts to use with the adaptor. May I ask, did you buy the kit lens? If so are they worth it for the less weight of the adaptor? I'm used to the adaptor but just interested. Thank you. Chris
I have had my Zfc for about 4 months now and I love it. I bought it as a travel camera for family vacations and to do some street photography. It is a great addition to my FM3A, DF, and z6ii.
As a Fuji user, please remember when doing your Z fc vs X-T4 comparison, that the Nikon Z fc is set to compete in the same category as the Fujifilm X-T30 and Sony a6400, both in price, features and build quality. It never was ment to compete for sale against a camera like the X-T4. Don't be afraid of the dials on the Z fc, they are made of solid carved aluminum dials with engraved markings. The body is made of a magnesium alloy (except for back and bottom plate which are plastic). Guess they had to make some compromises to keep the price down.
Hi Hans, yes this is a valid point. I will be kind when I do the comparison. As I said in the video, overall I think the Zfc is a great camera. I don't think it's for the typical Fuji shooter though, or someone who really wants to invest in a retro functioning system. Thanks for watching and for the insightful comment!
I am a sport photographer and have used Nikon for years and own some expensive lens and bodies such as 400 2.8, Z9. . A month ago,. I purchased a Z fc and love it. I use it without worrying if the Nikon company will go broke because they totally missed their target market by using the wrong flippy screen. Unlike you, it passes my "nostalgia test" so its a good thing you borrowed one for a couple days and didn't purchase it. Nikon listened to your channel as they came out with a totally black body, impressive. My advice to you is to return the Z fc to your friend and move on to a camera with substance for your style of shooting and get on with taking photos and having fun. There is no reason to be burdened by the finances of these camera companies.
Hey Ted, I really liked the Zfc overall, and the image quality is excellent. I did return it to my friend because I already own way too many cameras myself haha. I don't think Nikon watched this particular review and then decided on a black body for the Zfc, but who knows? Thanks for watching and commenting!
In the 1970's I lived in Canberra and I purchased a Nikon Ftn & the Zfc is very much like it in looks. My 35m Ftn enabled me to work with Sydney John Photography & I covered dozens of weddings with just the one camera, one lens & a spare battery. The Nikon fc is capable of doing all of those things & I find it so easy to use. I prefer to set my own ISO as it was called but it's a shame to have to go into the menu to access auto. A beautiful camera, inside & out & easy to carry around all day. I didn't buy the kit lens for the reasons stated, but I did buy the lens adapter. A little on the heavy side, but you soon get used to that. Love the Nikon fc.
The 'f' stands for fusion. It's exactly what Nikon did. Don't expect the Z fc to feel exactly like the FM2 , it only looks similar and that's where all the similarities ends. I know this because I still own and use an FM body. My main reason for purchasing the Z fc was its retro looks. For its price range I think it's well made and Nikon did well to include the same AF system as its higher end Z bodies. Yes the bottom plastic plate feels flimsy but once you attach a grip "SmallRig has a nice one" this is no longer an issue. Why do you say the dials are cheap? They're all machined from solid aluminium and firmly attached to an equally well made metal top plate also attached to a skeleton forged from magnesium alloy. I've owned quite a few mirrorless cameras and the contrast deference between the screen & EVF at this price range is common to most manufacturers. As to the flippy screen, most reviewers would have complained if it didn't have one. I've now learned to take each reviews with a pinch of salt. At least your review is not as negative as the one from PetaPixel. I like my Z-fc. To a lot of photographers used to bodies with a beefy grip, it will take them some time to get used to the ergonomics of this Z-fc. To keep that retro look, I totally understand why Nikon did not add a grip to the body. Give this camera a try if you're a nostalgic nerd like me. You will be amazed with the results achieved both for stills & video. BTW, I'm mostly a Canon shooter so my comments are based on the merits of this camera and nothing to do with the manufacturer 🙂
Just a quick note I don't think anyone commented on: The manual 'focus ring' can be programmed to change apertures instead. Clickless, yes - but the feature, as such, is there on the lens.
I bought the Z fc because it rectifies most of what I had to criticise about the Z 50, mainly the sub-par autofocus performance in low-light conditions and the absence of an eye-tracking mode when shooting videos. I haven't had any intention to go FX ("full frame" for non-Nikon photographers) because I want a small, light and compact system that doesn't weigh me down when I'm on the go. I neither bought it because of its retro style nor despite it, I just couldn't care less. I miss the the two or three user setting memories that the other Z cameras feature but like the separate settings for almost everything for photo and video shooting. While I agreee that the 16-50 mm kit lens is quite slow and the variable aperture wide open is a bit of a nuisance, I have to state that the picture quality it delivers is surprisingly good, as are the results you get from the 50-250 mm tele kit lens. I've had quite a lot of fun with my Z fc kit and don't regret the purchase.
Great points, Eric. Thanks! I agree the kit lenses are very good quality, I usually prefer prime lenses so I'm a bit biased there too. Even shooting a straight 2.8 zoom lens in low light I find to be too slow for me. You hit the nail on the head - it's fun, the quality is great, and people won't regret the purchase!
Yeah I got this little camera and I love it. I'm a pro photographer here in Maui & shoot all Nikon. I got totally sick of not having a camera with me all the time when I'm NOT working. Bought this camera so I don't have to shoot with my iPhone I agree w your analysis of the kit lens & have the new retro F2 40mm ordered This camera rocks and reminds me of my roots with the FE2. Easy to get creative with, light weight and lots of style! I shoot raw & jpeg sending the JPEGs to my phone. Have blown away my family, friends and clients with instant beautiful images that literally just happened & now I have texted them images with in minutes. Great Camera
I’ve used the Zfc with a Sigma 150-600 Sport (with FTZ adapter) on Safari with spectacular results. It’s now my walk-about camera with the NIKKOR Z 27mm f/1.7 lens. For better ergonomics, I attached a Smallrig grip. Even so, it fits in my coat pocket!
I bought one and I feels just like home I had many different nikon cameras over the year since 1984 and the zfc is exactly what I wanted especially the new 40mm se lens
very interesting points, I agree for the most part, but the screen HAS to be like this, other wise it would be a Z50 and it is a Swiss Army knife, good for everything, great for nothing! that is what the Z Fc is made to be. THe lenses well I think all are like this, no aperture ring and many kit lenses close and open before being ready to be use.... over all I like it! I did not had a FM2 but I did had a FM10 and I like what I see. Last, this camera is also the path to the Z cameras and lenses, I have a D7500 and I love it, one thing, VIDEO, the video is less than average but the Z Fc is much better and the flip forward screen is much better option and the video features are ideal for me. Thanks for the video, very well put together, and I will seach for the XT4 vs Z Fc!! I am a new subscriber!
Thanks for watching and subscribing! Yep, you are right about the screen and the Swiss army knife analogy is hilarious and right on. As a path to Z cameras, I think you have a very good point there as well. I was really impressed with the AF, menus, and the handling, which I had assumed would be clunky. My last Nikon was a D7100 so this was my first Z experience. I can already tell you that the Nikon beats the Fuji in regards to AF speed LOL.
Third party lenses have manual aperture rings Single SD card is a negative 16-50 lens is good for the money Lightness is a benefit when flying Flippy screen is great for video or selfies IBIS isn’t a necessity Menus allow EVF and LCD appearance to be adjusted. I have 2 units and am content. Also have a D500 & D850 so can compare. I have used Nikon for 50 years and those era lenses are great adapted.
I’m just learning so getting use to a new system that’s not canon isn’t a big deal to me. I have a r50 right now and I like it. But I also want a back up and I love the old look and manual controls on the Zfc. I’d get the Zf if I could afford it but that’s like 1000 dollars more than the Zfc. Im just looking forward to learning everything I can to be a good photographer and have fun doing it.
I had a D90 in the past and now I'm looking for an option for mobile photography while traveling. I'm looking for a small camera and I like the retro style. Would you recommend the Zfc? And, if yes, which lens would work best? Tks in advance!
I think you will like it very much. Lens choice depends on what you are photographing but a small zoom might be ideal if you’re doing landscapes and then people photos too
Great video. Funny you mention wishing there was a black one since Nikon just recently announced an all-black version (which is the one I'm considering). I'm already a Nikon Z shooter and this would be more of a second fun camera for me and my girlfriend to use. My biggest concern is no grip but I guess as long as I use the 28 and 40 primes it shouldn't be too heavy to hold with no grip.
Thanks, Oliver! Yes, I think the black body is a great move by Nikon. Forget all those stupid other colors lol. It would make an awesome family camera especially since you are invested in the system already. I liked it much more than I thought I would at first.
@@hugo_R898 thanks for the tip. I like the look of the official one but I don't like the look of that price lol. I guess if I get it I'll try it out without first and if later I feel a need for a grip go with the 3rd party one.
how to set up delay shooting + shutter speed at 30 seconds? This is a standard feature on Samsung phone, but I am unable to find any tutorial involving Nikon Z fc. On its manual, Two modes are offered for long-time exposures. "Bulb" and "Time". Bulb: The shutter remains open while the shutter-release button is held down. Time: The exposure starts when the shutter-release button is pressed and ends when the button is pressed a second time. Neither of the two modes provide an internal timer, and the presure from finger could bring unwanted shake.
If you use the camera's self timer mode, you can choose a 2 second delay. This way when you set your shutter to 30 seconds, you press the shutter and it waits 2 seconds before firing.
@@PeteCocoPhoto there's no way to set shutter speed at 30 seconds sharp without an external remote on Z fc. The camera itself can do 4 seconds only, while the remote ML-L7 is out of stock everywhere. I would be on a vacation next month and I wanna shoot stars and milky way. Looks like I only need to carry my Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra instead.
@@readyplayerone5429 crazy. Is there an app? With canon and Fuji you can shoot remotely using an app. I would think that Nikon has one too but I’m not sure.
@@PeteCocoPhoto Thanks! Found the app. The camera cannot pair with iPhone through bluetooth somehow. Tried 10 mins and gave up. The bluetooth+wi-fi connection does work with Samsung. I have tested long-time exposure and it works! Hopefully the connection will still work in the mountain.
@@readyplayerone5429 awesome!!! Glad to hear this. It’s so funny in a way though that camera companies now need to compete with phones but here we are.
Hey Steve I didn't even think of that but you are so right. That's a great way to get the full manual experience. I agree with you on the sensor too... I was looking back at some of the photos I took with the Zfc and they definitely have a certain something to them. Thanks for the great tip!
I have had mine for a few months and love it. Yes it has some kinks but I can get around them ehh kit lense . So I ordered the Vitrox 56m and is a game changer . I suggest trying it out and would love to know what your thoughts are., nice review glad i found your channel Happy shooting
Hi Rose! Thanks for watching and for the kind words! I don't have the Viltrox 56mm but I will definitely check it out. I've heard good things about it from friends. I think that a camera like the Zfc screams out for a fast prime lens lol. For me it completes the experience of using a retro designed camera.
I don’t care for the 16-50 lens but I think it looks sexy as hell with that lens and the 28mm. Can you turn off noise reduction? Is there a button you can dedicate for iso?
It does look beautiful, but the feel doesn't match the looks at all. After a few days I got used to the way it feels but when I picked up my Fuji X-T4 again I was reminded that it feels very cheap in comparison lol. Not sure about the noise reduction but I would imagine there is a way to shut it off. I'm not positive if it was noise reduction or if it is just the quality of the jpegs themselves. They just seemed kind of strange to me. Also not positive about whether you can program a button for the ISO but I will see if I can figure it out. I'm going to do a video comparing it to my X-T4 soon.
Just grabbed one .. yeah its a nice toy but that's what I wanted. I am happy with the kit lens in auto mode, its better than my phone camera ;-) This little kit lens and Zfc will be going with me just about everywhere, it will be replacing my Nikon1 j5 for that. If I am out for more serious shooting I will take my D500 and specific lenses. Waiting for the D500 mirrorless replacement which may be the Z7 III when it arrives .. in the mean time lots of nice high end F mount lenses going for cheap !!!
Just about every time I go out shooting with my ZFC a photography enthusiast will stripe up a conversation with me. I enjoy this but could be unwelcome for sum.
Caution! I recently downloaded firmware for the Zfc from Nikon. When I hit the upload, the camera shut itself down and would not restart. Nikon support told me it would have to be sent to a service center. I mailed it, at my expense. After a week, I got an estimate for repair. Almost $ 300.00. This camera was just over one year old, purchased directly from Nikon and had less than 1,000 actuations. The camera worked perfectly until I tried to upload the firmware. Note - I own over two dozen Nikon cameras including four Z series and I am very familiar with the update procedure. Has anyone else had this problem?
I want retro looks, and wouldn't buy a camera without a flippy screen. Oh, and I love they included a brown one lol (although I'd probably buy black and put a brown leather half case on it). I might be an oddity lol.
From what I understand it's basically the same camera as the Z6 but the AF is better. The ergonomics are not as good as the Z6 though so that's something to consider too. Other than that it's definitely a great camera.
Very good looking camera but didn"t stand out in case of performance even in comparison to older Fuji X-T20, but when and if its price will drop this Zfc will be good option as travel camera for Nikon owners.
I agree Jakob. It's a nice camera, not at par with my Fujis in terms of image and build quality, but it was a nice take along camera. Thanks for watching!
@@PeteCocoPhoto im happy that there is a thing in case of vintage nostalgia design in cameras, becasue its just classy. Performance isn"t the goal here. :) For Fuji owners it didnt stand out, but Nikon fans will love it for lack of other options. And your videos are better and better every time i seen them. Good work Pete.
@@jakubstrumillo Thanks so much Jakob! Appreciate the kind words and feedback. I agree -- if you are a Nikon fan you will love the Zfc, and seeing more and more vintage options is very cool. Actually it would be awesome if Canon came out with a digital A-1 or F-1. How cool would that be?!
@@PeteCocoPhoto I'll have to disagree. The Z fc I have has better build quality than my XT30, and about on par as the XT4, not to mention so many people recently having issue with the new XT5 glitches, shut downs, and bad AF just not focusing correctly. The Nikon 20mp sensor also perform much better in low light at high ISO, even better than the XT5. I believe the Z fc has the same ISO performance as the Sony A7C full frame. Go to dpreview studio comparison tool and look for yourself.
@@ThisIsDavesGarage When I posted this review the XT5 wasn't out yet, but I do have one and it's awesome. I have had no glitches with mine, thankfully. AF works great.
@@hankmoody6846 I haven t used any of the sonies but i m quite happy with ZFC. I m a real estate photographer and people stop and ask me about the camera on the streat so i get the chance to tell my story. As a camera... For a crop camera it s the best i have ever used or saw. The 28mm lens is amazing I don t know what are you talking about and with the FTZ adapter i can use all my DSLR lenses. I even use the sigma 16-50 2.8 with autofocus working as charm. I plan to get the Viltrox 13mm 1.4 so there are amazing lens options There are even some ergonomic handles to impove the easy to use. The important differences with the camera u mentioned are Fully Articulated Usb 3 and bracketing for where Nikon wins and Battery life Megapixels and Recording time where Sony wins. For me the Nikon advantages are better. I don t mind getting another battery since i would probably need another for sony, the megapixels mean nothing as for the video I won t be recording more than 5 mins so Sony s time is an overkill for me. The colors is a matter of taste but I prefer the Nikon as well from what i saw in UA-cam.
@@arisps17 well you forgot that sony has double the amount of autofocus points(425 Vs 209),video stabilisation, video quality is way with their color profiles and autofocus, less weight and it is way smaller(most people are buying APC mirrorless because they are very small and feel like compact cameras),NFC connection...plus you can't compare the new sigma lenses with the old DX Nikon F lenses(I have used both since I have a Sony a6400 and a Nikon d3500) and Sony supports more than double the amount of lenses than Nikon(because of their third party policy)..also If you want a good result with the ZFC you will probably buy some Z glass which is awesome, but it is too much money to spend and too much weight to carry around for an APC camera(without a grip) and if you tell you can buy a grip, it is expensive as is the adapter (all Sony mirrorless cameras have Sony E mount,APC and FM so you will never need one )
@@hankmoody6846 a few miligrams and centimeters won t affect the shooting, bracketing screen and colour will. Frankly i do not care much about the video... there is also the retro look. Nikon s policy is way better than cannon s and will push manufacturers to build supplementary and not competing lenses Sony has more lenses because it s been around monopolizing mirrorless for so long but she is losing ground with Fuji Nikon and Canon. But still it s a bad comparison ZFC compares to the retro fujis. If videos are your thing or the other staff in sony go for the A6400
well, there's always the Z50, the flippy screen is the best screen design overall. that screen should be on the Z50. In fact, it should be on both. you can't mount the camera with that articulating screen.
I think Nikon has mixed this camera up with the z50 which should have had the flip out screen and marketed. as a content creator camera and this ZFC should have gotten the flip like screen on the z50.
@@PeteCocoPhoto I tried the XT4. Lol theres not a big difference. Both feel like a toy to be honest, but the Zfc still has magnesium alloy build, aluminum dials.
For me the biggest cons are lack of ibis, lack of wr, and lack of any faster native wide primes. Shooting at 28 and 2.8 is like shooting at f4 on FF. Esp when I can get a z5 for 999.
IBIS is overrated and doesn't make a good camera any better, the VR on the lenses is very good. Any Z lens works on the Z mount. Put a 24mm f1.8? Or 40mm F2? It does have WR just not at Z6/Z7 level.
Why would anyone trust and invest in this system? No one can tell if some years down the road there will be an equivalent upgrade to this body. No one can even tell if Nikon will still be supporting the APSC platform. The just don't seem to care too much about it, so why would any customer.
I think people buying this are mostly one-off camera buyers who like the nostalgia and use it for family/fun, and not necessarily investing in a system per se. But I think you make valid points.
I don't think people who are interested in a Zfc are considering a Z30 in most cases. The Zfc appeals to those who love the retro design over the modern look. Thanks for watching!
Here's a tip: when the reviewer includes an affiliate link to buy the product they're reviewing, it won't be an objective review. Let me put that in other words, he's a shill for the product.
Hi Sifo, sorry you feel this way but I am not a shill for anyone. I usually link whatever product I am reviewing but that doesn't mean I am not giving my honest opinion. I have both positive and negative things to say about the Zfc and I have no connection to any camera company.
An affiliate link is not a "kickback," it's a commission. Most product reviewers on UA-cam have affiliate links, that's what helps them spend tons of time, energy, and money on providing reviews. And many of the top camera reviewers (not me) actually get gear directly from Nikon, Canon, Sony, etc., to review as well. Does this mean they are dishonest? I guess you could assume so but that's completely up to you. For me specifically, this channel is really a labor of love, and certainly not a career. If someone likes my review and clicks on a link, that's totally cool with me of course, but again, it doesn't affect how I comment on the gear. Hey, if you don't like my reviews and think I'm not doing a good job, there are thousands of other channels you can watch.
If you want the true retro experience, buy an FM2. The Zfc is a toy...not a professional tool. The FM2 is a legendary SLR. The Zfc is a soon to be forgotten digital product...and a bit naff
How is the Zfc a toy? Because other clickbait youtubers told you? It has aluminum dials, mild weather sealing, the same Nikon 20mp crop sensor as in the D500, and the same processor as the Z6 and autofocus system as the Z6/Z7 II. It can even autofocus down to -4.5 EV. Record in uncropped 4K. You should research before just dismissing it.
This camera and Fujis various models would benefit from the ingenious designed screen from the Fujifilm XT100 offering both flip for vloggers and selfie shooters and the tilt for stills photographers. I can’t understand why Fujifilm are not using it on all the cameras they have released since the XT100 body!

It's a great little camera!
Quality content here. More power to your channel 💪
🙌 Thank you!
I bought one and I feels just like home I had many different nikon cameras over the year since 1984 and the zfc is exactly what I wanted especially the new 40mm se lens
Congrats! It's a great camera - enjoy!
very interesting points, I agree for the most part, but the screen HAS to be like this, other wise it would be a Z50 and it is a Swiss Army knife, good for everything, great for nothing! that is what the Z Fc is made to be.
I can already tell you that the Nikon beats the Fuji in regards to AF speed LOL.
great review, Pete! Thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it, Johnny!
Third party lenses have manual aperture rings
Single SD card is a negative
16-50 lens is good for the money
Lightness is a benefit when flying
Flippy screen is great for video or selfies
IBIS isn’t a necessity
Menus allow EVF and LCD appearance to be adjusted.
I have 2 units and am content. Also have a D500 & D850 so can compare. I have used Nikon for 50 years and those era lenses are great adapted.
Very detail, thank you so much
Glad it was helpful!
Lens choice depends on what you are photographing but a small zoom might be ideal if you’re doing landscapes and then people photos too
Viltrox makes very nice lenses in Z mount with an aperture ring… I bought my zfc body only and get the 33mm f1.4 and i’m really happy with this combo
That is a great combo!
Nikon actually makes a grip you can buy for some (a lot) extra money. It’s the GR-1. There are also 3rd party grips you can buy for less.
The viltrox lenses for zed mount apsc have aperture control that works on the camera. There is something special about that 20.9 sensor.
Καλά τα λες
If you go into the settings, you can control the aperture from the lens actually look it up
What if the lens has no aperture ring?
I like the look.of this camera but 8 definitely think I would be looking at an alternative lens such as something from Sigma.
Only question is - does it take quality pictures?
Yes indeed it does
It is a interchangable lens camera without existing lens family. There is no 35mm 50mm eq. option.
too many complains man, but other than that great quality video.
Thanks Fel! You know, I scaled back my criticism a bit LOL. Overall though it is a great little camera. Thanks for watching!
There is an option to turn on/off High ISO Noise Reduction in all Nikons I've tried. I think it is on by default
Enjoy! I think it's great for what it is and a lot of fun. Definitely cool for anyone who loves and owns Nikons!
Just about every time I go out shooting with my ZFC a photography enthusiast will stripe up a conversation with me. I enjoy this but could be unwelcome for sum.
I’m with you I love meeting and chatting with fellow photographers when I’m out wirh my camera.
Sorry to hear that you had this issue!
I want retro looks, and wouldn't buy a camera without a flippy screen. Oh, and I love they included a brown one lol (although I'd probably buy black and put a brown leather half case on it). I might be an oddity lol.
The flippy screen was never a deal breaker for me but I do prefer the 3 way tilt for most applications
Where do you buy a half leather case for the fc ? I've had no luck finding one.
I have a nikon Z6 for weddings.
Can I use this camera as a back up camera.
So can you program a button for auto iso?
Nope! Not that I could find.
it s strange that on Dec 2022 it s the best value for money camera in the market
It's an excellent value for sure!
Is it really more vfm than the Sony a6100 or the a6400?I don't think so, especially with the available lenses and the policy on third party lenses
If videos are your thing or the other staff in sony go for the A6400
It's a nice camera. But, too slippery. Too simplistic? Probably.
Simplistic? I thought it had quite a lot of features but it's definitely designed for enthusiasts.
well, there's always the Z50, the flippy screen is the best screen design overall. that screen should be on the Z50. In fact, it should be on both. you can't mount the camera with that articulating screen.
The only time I ever use the fully articulating screen is when doing a UA-cam vid. I prefer the 3 way articulating otherwise.
I think Nikon has mixed this camera up with the z50 which should have had the flip out screen and marketed. as a content creator camera and this ZFC should have gotten the flip like screen on the z50.
Yes I agree I am not sure why they marketed it as a content creator camera with the wacky colors. Still a great camera though.
@@PeteCocoPhoto I am debated with (I know and odd choice) this ZFC and the Sony a7c. I like both for different reasons.
Great video as usual! But sadly the camera looks cheap, weak and worst of all a cheap Chinese toy. Not for me!
Thanks, José! haha when you compare it to an X-T4, it definitely feels like a toy. That will be in a vid coming soon.
@@PeteCocoPhoto I tried the XT4. Lol theres not a big difference. Both feel like a toy to be honest, but the Zfc still has magnesium alloy build, aluminum dials.
@@ThisIsDavesGarage For me the Zfc doesn't have the build quality of the XT4. I think both are great in their own way.
For me the biggest cons are lack of ibis, lack of wr, and lack of any faster native wide primes. Shooting at 28 and 2.8 is like shooting at f4 on FF. Esp when I can get a z5 for 999.
Excellent points, thanks for sharing.
The new Z30 is way cheaper and more modern looking.
@@PeteCocoPhoto do you get a kickback when people click on the affiliate links you include in your videos?
To each his own my friend! I have a Nikon F Photomic and use it often.
That's something I've thought I about too.
