The 50mm 1.8 is the first prime lens j bought for my T6 and I've been happy and thoroughly impressed. I bought it for school and have received multiple praises from my instructors on the quality of my images and the work I've put out with it. As a starter prime lens the 1.8 is good. At least it was for me. I plan to get the 1.4 some day as well as a 35mm. I'm holding off on the 85 until I get a full frame.

@@manggaedduk yes, its more like a 85mm I assume but at the moment it works. It gives me far better images than my kit lens. Although, I still use it. I plan to invest in a 35mm because that will probably act more like a 50mm on a full frame.

THIS IS THE BEST BEGINNERS VIDEO EVERRRR!!! Honestly! Your recommendations are so realistic unlike others who would recommend a 5D Mark III or something like that...The fact that you mentioned the Rebel T6 (which in our country India is called 1300D) makes me so happy because its the camera i currently use and i think its really underrated. The thing that I find very useful in 1300D (own one as well) is wi-fi connectivity. You can use smartphone as remote controller for the camera, with preview of the photos and stuff. Too bad no timelapse function, need a computer for that...

From Canon: 1300D (Rebel T6) or newer 4000D (which is cheaper, if you don't mind plastic mount)
      From Nikon: D3400 or D3500.
Those are the cheapest if you want a brand new camera from the shop, and the difference between brands for a newbie pretty much doesn't matter. They both take good photos on kit lenses.

my dad and I got into photography last year and I fell in love with it! He has a guy he works with that does/did photography and let my dad try out a Canon t3i camera, we liked it but decided to get a t7i camera and that is the one I started with and LOVE the quality it has. I graduated recently from highschool and my dad got me a Canon 7D mark ii from the same guy who lent us the t3i and I LOVE LOVE LOVE!!! it is such a fast camera and from most professional photographer videos I have seen is one of the best cameras you can get. My dad got the Canon 18-135 lens with his camera and it is still one of my favorites; he also has a Canon 50mm that I haven't used much. The big lens that we have is the Sigma 150-600mm and it is great for wild life and plane photography. When he bought me my camera he also got me a 100mm macro lens from Canon and I love it so much, its like a magnifying glass for the world!!

About kit lens: depending on the price difference between body only and a kit, the kit lens can be the cheapest lens you can have. When I first started photography, I had a Pentax with 18-55mm lens, I used it for landscapes a lot, and even for some portraits where I wanted to have some distinguishable background. It was a very decent lens.

First, I love you Jessica. I’ve been watching your videos since 2016. You have literally made my photography career.
If you are a student or former student with access to your university email you can get adobe suite for 19.99 a month plus tax. Also, if you have a crop sensor camera body the sigma 18-35mm 1.8 constant aperture will be your best friend. With the 1.6 crop factor (on canon) you’ll easily have a nice 35 and 50mm equivalent focal length in one lens. I bought the canon 50 1.4 first but if i could do it again I would have definitely purchased the sigma 18- 35mm first. FYI, i do mostly street and urban fashion so the 35mm focal length is usually where i live.

SL2 is such a great budget camera! think about it this way; when you're out and about, you're not really paying attention to what other people are doing. and neither are they. they literally do not care about you or what you're doing. i used to feel the same way when i went out shooting video. once you realize it's all in your head and no one is actually paying any attention to you, it seems kinda silly! go out and shoot! no one cares! the world is ending! nothing matters! lol.

I have been learning so much from trial and error together with tutorials on UA-cam. I definitely recommend the Rebel series bodies or the 60d(or 70d or 80d) to start off with. After that, I predict you will buy Canon 55-250mm STM lens for farther distance image and Tokina 11-16mm F/2.8 lens for wide angle image. When you become even serious and have extra cash, go for a used Canon 70-200mm F/2.8 IS lens for portraits. Oh yeah, the Canon 2X Extender III is good too.

I received an entry level cropped sensor Nikon D3400 as a gift in 2017 which came with an 18-55 kit lens. I like to photograph minor hockey, that lens didn’t give me the range I needed, so I picked up a 70-300. I was having issues with exposure in manual mode, so I began watching UA-cam on the subject and improved. I then thought about a fixed prime for portraits. After a few channels decided on the 50mm 1.8 which is amazing. I then picked up two speedlites with controller. I worked on this equipment trying different things, and ended up buying a kit of 4 umbrellas with stands off eBay for about 70 dollars. Before i purchase anything, I read reviews and researched what these items did. I don’t want to spend a lot, just get basic things and if I find I need a more expensive product, I’ll do that after I’ve worked with what I have now. Sometimes I’ll spend about a month or two before I decide on something. I found a local retailer that is not a photo chain that can order equipment if I want something. I like dealing with family owned businesses.
I’ve watched your channel and others. Just because you spend money on equipment, doesn’t mean you know what you’re doing. Whether you have a 5,000 dollar camera body or a 300 dollar body, it isn’t going to help if your images are bad. It’s the person behind the lens.
At some point I do plan on getting a full frame body in the future. The 50mm is a full frame lens. I can invest in glass to get better imaging with the camera body I have.
For photo editing, my laptop came with Cyberlink photo editing software which was free. Nikon has free software and paid versions. I have the free one. I downloaded Gimp a few days ago. I’ll try out Gimp. See what it does, and if I need something better I’ll look at paid software. This isn’t about being cheap. It’s about getting the basics down
I like your channel. It’s given me ideas, and some of the stories you’ve told has informed me how difficult certain situations can be.

I think that your idea is great. for me i started with the kit lenses the 18-55 and the 75-300 and found out that i take more in focal lengths of 18mm, 55mm(50mm would be the closest), 75mm, 300 this being that i would be willing to get only what i need from there. So my input is the complete oppsite. If your just starting out the kit lenses are great obviously not what to use if your going to go pro. So when you upload your photos go to the folder where your pictures are uploaded and then right click and then click group photos by, then more, and find the option for focal length, then press okay. Now you will see which photos you take the most in certain focal lengths. I hope this tip Helps new people to more experienced individuals if you didnt know this. If your a person who doesnt know what lens to actually get because you dont know what type of photography you immediatly want to get into then this will also help as in get the kit lenses if two lenses are offered.

All reasonable advice, but if you're beginning..get the kit lens...
Use the kit lens. Over time you'll notice there is some focal lengths you use more than others. Your journey to having a basic style has begun.
When you first begin, it is hard to have just a body and imagine what 18mm looks like, or what 23mm or 35 mm looks like. It becomes even more tricky again when you settle on a focal range, then learn about crop factor and realise your beloved 35mm focal length, is actually more like a nifty 50.
This is the value in the kit lens. Once you decide to get additional lenses you'll then see most sensors are better than their provided kit lens and now your imagines will be sharper, be less distorted and have better colour rendition.
I wouldn't recommend settling on a focal range/prime before you even taken your first picture with the camera, just start with the kit lens and learn what focal ranges you enjoy first.

I just bought the Canon rebel t7i as my first DSLR. I would highly recommend getting a camera that has a flip screen. It helps a lot when you are shooting low to the ground or holding the camera overhead and so you can just turn the screen in which ever direction you need it. I still only use the kit lens which is a 18-135mm f3.5-f5.6 STM. I think that it works pretty good for a kit lens. I just want my next lens to at least be a f1.8.

Jessica, I love your channel, but this is a very expensive list for a beginner. Photography is a very expensive hobby. As a beginner I did not get a grasp of the idea of the blurry background for quite a while. And when I did I was amazed with what I could do with the kit lens. It took a while for me to decide to buy a prime lens and I went for the cheapest I could get at the moment. After three years I upgraded from a d3300 to a d7500 and I am overwhelmed by all its features. Imagine a beginner trying to figure out an 80d. It could be discouraging.

I bought a Nikon d5300 that I bought used with an included kit lens for $375. I originally bought it mainly for the sensor but it turns out it is a very well rounded camera. Extremely good value compared to the Canon offerings with no compromises. I can send some example photos for anyone who would consider it. I also got a sigma 70-300mm for $120 for my astrophotography which has served me well so far. I use affinity photo and I would highly recommend it to beginners with many of the features that Photoshop has so you can grow into it through the intermediate or professional level depending on how much you like it. Only problem is it does not have the massive backing of Photoshop so some certain plugins that you might one day see yourself using may not be available.

Those are perfect recommendations. I started with a t6i and honestly that is a dope little camera it has a ton of features and is very easy to use. I had the t6i the 85mm f1.8, 50mm f1.8, and the 35mm f2 all of those are under 600 and they are super fast for such cheap lenses the lower fstop means more light and shallower depth of field (more background blur). Beginner tip multiply the focal length by the crop factor of your cameras censor. It may sound complicated its not all you need to know in the beginning is a 35mm lens on a cropped censor camera is actually a 56mm lens. Canon has a crop factor of 1.6 and everything else is 1.5. Sooo 35 x 1.5= 52.5 and a 50 x 1.5= 75mm. It is important to know so you dont buy something that you didnt want so if you want a true 35mm on a beginner camera you will need to buy a 24mm lens.

Thanks Jessica. I´d like to add something for all people with an apsc camera. I took pictures more than 10 years and still did not know which camera I had.
And when I found out this topic drove me nuts for a long time, so I hope the following information can help another lost soul. 🤕
I think an important informations would be if someone owns are fullframe or apsc- camera?!
Because all the focal lenghts are totally different depending on the camera (or better which kind of sensor your camera has). Example. If you have an apsc you have to multiply your focal lenghts with factor 1.6 (for Canon). Let´s say you buy a objective with 50mm focal lenghts. On a full- frame camera this lens will operate like the 50mm you bought. BUT... the same lens will operate on an apsc camera like 80mm. You have to multiply the focal lenghts of your lens with the factor 1.6 (for canon, otherwise 1.5).
    50mm x 1.6 = 80mm. This means it´s operates like a 80mm. If you like to have 50mm focal lengths on your apsc camera you have to by 35mm (35 x 1.6 = 52,5mm).
Before you buy any lenses make sure you really understand what the different focal lenghts do, which effects do they have etc. And if you own an apsc than always check if the lens you like fits on an apsc body.
You can´t use all the full frame lenses on your apsc, because they have different mounts. Some are designed to fit both. But make sure of it, before you buy lens. All the best...
