So refreshing to see portrait photographers getting what they need and what looks good at the shutter drop. Minimal post production is so natural and beautiful.
I've been shooting for 20+ years but still love these vids. I like watching other people work. Still inspires me to get out and shoot everyday. Nice to see someone that doesn't need the latest gear as well. That 50 1.4 is such a great lens besides shotty mechanical internals. I went through 3 and I'm good at fixing them now lol. Something magical about older Canon glass. The original 35L and 200L prime are amazing too. I don't even shoot Canon anymore but still use those lenses all the time.
Why would people use a 1.4 lens for portraits? I recently bought a full frame camera (had only crop sensors before) and did a few portraits for friends. 50mm @1.8 is so shallow that the eyes are in focus and the nose is not. Or if they are looking to one side, one eye is out of focus. I did not expect that and ruined a lot of shots. Would it be right to assume that people with 1.2 and 1.4 lenses don't really use them at that speed?
@@mostunicorn it really depends on the focal length of the lens and the distance from the subject. Distance from subject effects the depth of field drastically. Wide open portraits are done a bunch you just need to make sure the subject is framed parallel with the sensor to eyes or get your distance right to get both eyes. I personally don't shoot wide open most of the time unless it's low light or I'm going for that shallow look
@@mostunicorn on another note with focal length and distance , I'll shoot 35 at 1.4 no problem but 85 I won't unless I'm pretty far back from the subject
I moved to mirrorless about a year ago mainly because of the eye tracking AF, smaller bodies and exposure simulation. But I do miss the shutter sound and longer battery life of DSLRs. And the 5D Mark IV is an absolute beast of a camera. Will still be a great camera over the next years.
The other day I saw a comment from a girl on a photographer's video, saying that she had recently purchased an entry-level camera and was asking for an opinion on which lens to buy. The photographer, instead of encouraging the girl, came up with a speech about how bad Canon's DLSr lenses were. Man, pride is still going to end humanity
This was an amazing photo shoot. Beautiful pictures. And your model is stunning. It is so refreshing to hear your gentle guidance throughout the shoot, opposed to how they speak to the young ladies on antm.
Love your presentation style when doing this type of teaching video. Thanks for sharing the pointers and how you portray the fun of photography! Have a great weekend.
When you were talking about getting the walking shots, you had tried it a few times. Do you recall if it was a setting you shifted or a setting issue like the light or posing? Just curious 💜 This video was really great to watch and I really appreciate how you told us what gear you brought and when you switched lenses!
Jessica, I hadn't seen your videos for a few years and today I missed it so i came to your channel to watch some videos. I thought it was really cool that you still use the same equipment from years ago. Many photographers change cameras like they change clothes, which for some people is completely unfeasible. It's really cool to see that you still have the same camera even though you can change it.
I LOVE THIS VIDS. you inspire me so much. I'm not a professional photographer and do it just for fun. With this vids you kinda make me want to go out and shoot rn❤
Thank you Jessica for posting this one up!! Loved the overall vibe of this vid today! I currently live in Japan and it's such a refresher to amazing Photographers as yourself visit and capture content through your viewpoint and experience!! Also appreciate the tips as well ^_^!! I could add some of those nuggets to my toolbox ^_^
Great and informative video, thanks! I have a question for the more experienced of you who take pictures for a living. Do you think it is possible to make a living from outdoor portrait photography year-round? Except for extreme weather. I don't enjoy studio photography, but I would like to make a living, or at least make some extra money, by taking photos outdoors. Thanks!
You know one of my weakness is that, i dont know how to direct my subject, how should the subject pose. Can you give an advice? Like when taking a photo, the rule of thirds really helped me a lot
great tips, one other, I shoot Medium format to, so if shooting this, try 120/180 mm focal lengths{similar 85/90/105/135 in 35mm full frame}, crops in, and you as a photographer are further away, not crowding the model, but closing in on the subject, with less distractions, as a wider lens would have. Also with a tele lens (like my Hassy 180mm) if you cant focus as close as you want to, use an extension tube, gets you closer, and tightens the perspective up.
Even when the location is in Japan, when a westerner shoots, it becomes like a fashion magazine. Could be cultural differences on what looks aestetic or something.

Love the fact that she is still rocking a DSLR. Makes me want to purchase the Nikon D750 and Nikon D780
Same! I'm thinking of buying a used mark iv because of her.

My sister who's actually more artistic than me, says that making the model make a triangle makes it better
Nice soft light ---overcast Japanese summer skies

In portuguese we call, Jessica Fofoqueira 😂
It's when someone try to catch what others people are saying to spread the message
Skin tones look different. Interesting.

Hey Jessica it’s the Dia family and my little brother is keen to go on a date with you
The real genius'es don't care about shooting mirrorless
She is so random for being too hot but not taking off her jacket 🤣

Have you permanently moved to Japan?
This is an old video shot in May

There were no tips to shoot like Brooklyn Beckham though… what gives??? /s
Ahhh why is this video out of focus :(
