I 100% agree! I've been shooting for the past 5 years, and I would suggest to any beginner: study the basic principles of the art first so that by the time you are actually shooting, you're very literally just applying what you know and finding your style. Also, don't be afraid to use your phone either to help you practice shooting if that's the only camera you can afford at the moment!
Yes! It goes both ways too. I’m tired of photographer sbuying $5000 cameras and shitting on photographers for having “entry level” camera. An “entry” level camera can still take better photos then a non entry level one, and we could have better lenses. It literally just depends on your work!!
6:25 reminded me of my early college days, keeping my point and shoot wrapped in my labcoat, one day as i rushed late to the lab, i pulled out my coat and bam!
I remember forgetting the batteries for my external flash JUST before the event was about to begin. I am blessed by the heavens above because the venue was right next to a hardware store. Whew.
Just two things, for an external drive for travel buy one with SSD instead of an HDD (no moving parts) and for dumping RAW files at home You can get a cheap NAS with TBs of space and a piece of mind with RAID1 configuration (if you have two disks one can fail and You still have all of Your data).
Hi!! I’m a new subscriber and just opened my first camera today! I’m super excited to start my photography journey. I’ve been watching your videos for some hours now and you’ve helped me feel more confident going forward, while also teaching me great info. You’re such a joy to watch, thank you!!🥰💕
I decided to try myself in the photography world and possibly switch careers aka. make my hobby into my primary and only source of income. Just spent everything I had saved, on gear (literally hours ago); got myself a Z6ll, 35mm, 50mm, 70-200mm, grip, 3 extra batteries, tripod, CFe cards, portable 80,000mAh USB-C charger, portable SSD, cam backpack, bi-color LED light, card readers, external video recorder, mic... You name it, I bought it... And now I see Jessica uploaded a video titled ''Photography Essentials For Beginner Photographers'' and it's nice to see that I didn't waste my money on something I won't use or need. Only thing I didn't get was reflectors, because I thought I will not need one... Will I? Should I buy some?! Edit: I want to try myself in the portraiture world mainly but am also heavily interested in photojournalism and documentary fields. Wish me luck!!! (I'll need it!)
You don't need luck, just lots of practice. The 35mm and 50mm are fab! :) and like others have said remember to learn about shutter speed, aperture and iso.
@@allanawilks7232 Been shooting random events and stuff as a hobby for years now. I know my way around cameras and photography in general, just never bothered to take it a step further into the professional world. It's been 3 years since I last shot something on a camera and I just made this huge decision! I love photography so why not make it a career? - Or at least that is my reasoning now. I'm tired of slaving myself out 8 hours a day behind a computer, in a job I don't even remotely like, just because it pays good... I want to be a photographer! I hope I can make it happen!
I know this is separate but the next time you do a photographer shoots the same model episode can you guys please say what gear you're using 😊🙏 you guys use to but don't anymore thank you for your videos

Reading the comments and there was only 11 and then realised oh I’m early! Love your content Jessica. You’re right. I do need a card holder. Not a beginner anymore but can always learn!!
That's why it better to invest in SSDs over mechanical hard drives, they're not prone to breaking just because they fell or got lobbed around. SSDs don't have any moving parts that could fail like on HDDs. That being said, it's always best to take care of your stuff lol.
Heyyyy girlll This video is much needed because I really want to understand what I might need as a beginner for photography Lol like if you still use your iPhone for photography
I highly recommend to think about what you want to do and how you can do it. With a new camera, you have the basic lense (for example with my Canon EOS2000D, it was the 18-55mm lense. Maybe it's always like that in every country, but since I live in France I really don't know), and it will not be enough. So keep money aside and think about it. I now have a 75-300mm and I wasn't prepared for this lol, but in my case it was needed, otherwise I would have been limited and frustrated.
I'd love a video on lights and I'd especially love to know what that one you brought out is called 😭 been looking for a good quality, small colored light square like that
I love your content! It’s helped me so much with getting started as a photographer. I don’t always have access to a laptop. Would you consider doing a video on a full edit on an iPad Pro using Lightroom/photoshop? It doesn’t have every function that the desktop version has and I’m curious how you would creatively go about that! Keep up the amazing work XOXO, Jenn
Hi Jess, Thanks for your great content. May suggest Amazon creator account then you can add a link to anything you find works for you and earn a small commission for yourself? I hope you dont mind? Keep up the great work.🌻
Extra camera bag tip if anyone has already invested in a camera bag that isn't waterproof. I just went to sports direct a few hours ago to see if they had fold up waterproof ponchos (a tip from another UA-cam photographer) that are big enough to cover your backpack if you're out caught in the rain (I live in the U.K. so it's very likely) but while looking I seen waterproof backpack covers of different sizes for under £10 so it could be a cheap temporary fix for anyone in need of one without having to buy a more expensive bag.
Hidden Tip. In a bind, you can use a tablet or cellphone as a back up, either with a cable, or with some wireless transfer app like Nikons snap bridge. Apps that do wireless tethering to tablets of phones also work, but are rather slow. But thats why I say "In a bind", not something you should do all the time. My phone has 256 gigs + 128 gig extra SD storage. That is more then enough for a ton of backup. If your super cautious, you can back up to a phone, then send it to your online storage somewhere.
Hey absolutely love your videos and photography. I've been following you a while. I have the canon 5d mark iii and I swapped out my canon 50mm 1.4 lens for a sigma 35mm 1.4 lens. Love the focal length of the 35mm but hate that it misses the focus sometimes :( thinking of now getting the 24-70mm 2.8 can you get good bokeh with this lens at 2.8 or above?? Portraiture is my favourite xx
Hey! I think with the 2.8 the bokeh the DOF (depth of field) would be larger, so it would probably have a less creamy or obvious bokeh compared to a 1.4 lens, but given it's more versatile as a zoom lens, a lot of portrait photographers really like it because you can get a variety of angles.
That’s good.. i will start the day after tomorrow being a photographer. My first camara, the canon 850D will arrive then and I already have a 50 mm 1.4 lens from canon, bought last week. Oh well, i hope making photos is fun. I don’t have an idea what to do when the camera arrives. I guess i will make photos of everyone who isn’t running or hiding
Also take photos of random things too! You'll find a lot of value in shooting everything at first so that you can find what you really enjoy photographing. Is it people? Events? Food? Products? Landscapes? Animals/Wildlife? Architecture? The possibilities are endless!
The LaCies she uses aren't the cheapest option, but they're very sturdy and usually the ones most Pros use. If you get a cheaper one then follow her tip with the case. If you don't need a lot of terrabytes for long-term storage, just a travel hard drive to store some photos until you're back home, an external SSD would be best because they're much more resistant to shock and being thrown around.
You need to clone your external hard drives have at least 2 copies of all your data. Make sure to store them away from each other and not in the same spot just in case. If both are in the same spot they may get damaged together and defeat the purpose of cloning.. You'll always have your data this way and no $4k data recovery fee.
I take most of my photos and videos with my phone but I have really been wanting to buy an actual camera and lenses but have no idea where to start as I take pictures of literally anything and never know if certain cameras are better for certain types of photography or anything. I'm a complete beginner.
The other day I was about half an hour from my house and could have sworn my battery was charged....guess who had to go home from a dud session.. Get extra batteries y'all, and make sure they are all charged😭
Jessica’s channel feels like a safe space💖✨

And remember, you can buy a $5000 camera and still take bad photos if you don't know how to use it. Study the big 3: Aperture, ISO, & Shutter speed.
