I can't believe that thing was sitting on TOP of something else! It looks so good as a stand-alone piece now! Great work!

I picked up something similar to this, perhaps as big, but not nearly as grand. Good solution for the original stain showing on the mirror. You did an amazing job

That is a stunning piece. The carvings on the feet perfectly match the cabinet. I know your client was thrilled. Speaking only for myself, it's a definite No re tackling such a project. I have had bad experiences dealing with glass and mirrors plus I do not have a second set of eyes.

Yes! I like to steer clear of anything with lots of glass if I can but when it's a customer I find it difficult to say no! haha! 😀

Love this!!! - My observations; The original design was for the china cabinet to go on top of the buffet, and like in life, all things change. The top part stands a bit low, still, even with those perfectly matching legs. I'm thinking, in a situation like this, consider adding a 2" or 3" block spacer between the cabinet and the legs. it's not much but it adds up, overall, and does bring the shelving a tad higher. Your detailing was impressive.

Thanks for the tips! It's a very tall piece and didn't want to add too much height to it. Of course in the end it was the customer's final say. She wanted to raise it up but only a small amount. I thought the feet I chose did fit so perfectly but you do have a point in raising the shelves. It's not really a piece they use other than to display a lot of crystal.

I have not watched the entire video yet. I just finished a small double tiered phone table of my Grandmother's in Vagabond One piant and a large dresser in Talley Green One paint. The first two pieces i have ever done. They turned out great, even though I didn't know what I was doing. Looking forward to seeing how it turns out.

In the future, you can order caulk in different colors. I had to order some in a pale gray and another in a blushy tan. Only took a few days to get them in.
    Beautiful work!!

In most of the other pieces you’ve done you’ve waxed them to give them a satin sheen finish. I noticed this time you didn’t wax it, clearly to match the other pieces in the suite. I’m planning eventually to paint a sideboard/buffet I was left by an aunt and the plan is to spray paint it after quite a bit of experience with other pieces. I’m I going to get a better effect using a paint similar to to One which I don’t believe we can get here in Australia and then use a higher sheen wax or would I be better to spray a gloss paint and ignore the waxing part? I do plan to change the hardware and embellish some of the Jacobean elements with gold wax again after some prior experience.
Your advice would be greatly appreciated.
I found your channel today and I love your down to earth explanations and the way you don’t stay rigidly planned to the original idea, you let the piece talk to you and tell you what it needs. I’m a quilter and my quilts tell me the colours I need to use and how I’m going to eventually quilt it so I understand your flexibility in working very well.
I have great plans to watch many of your videos, some other restorers vids I’ve seen are too fussy, others too industrial, but what I’ve seen you do so far in the five or six vids I’ve seen you have the same ideas and tastes as I do.
One last question, do you demonstrate upholstery? I have several chairs that both need painting and reupholstering. I ask purely because I like your way of teaching and other vids I’ve seen have been either clumsy, untidy or don’t give the polished effect I want for this gorgeous Louis chair.
    Thank you
    Neil

      @furniturerecreated  2 роки тому

Hey Neil! I hope you are feeling better today!
There are lots of different paints out there and not sure what you can get in Australia but some paints like ONE have a primer and top coat already in them so you don't have to add anything at the end, unless you want to, but the piece is thoroughly protected if it has top coat already in the paint. HOWEVER, if it's a paint like chalk paint you will have to do something to it to protect the finish because it's so, well....chalky! lol. I'm not a big fan of chalk paint because I'm not really a big fan of distressing a piece which is just a personal preference although it is great for blending as you may have seen some other furniture refinishers demonstrate. Wax is perfectly acceptable for chalk paint, mineral paint, milk paint etc. but wax isn't something permanent, it will wear off after a time and will need to be applied again. Another alternative would be a top coat like a polyurethane which comes in many different sheens. I prefer a matt finish but again that is a personal preference. I will say the shinier it is the more flaws that will be visible which makes it harder to get a "perfect" finish, but I'm not big on "perfect" anyway! HA! Top coats can be tricky and I have found spraying them with a spray gun is the easiest way to go. A spray can is fine for small projects but do not work well for large projects. I do have one video where I try a spray top coat in the can and well....check out the video! I did it about a month ago I think. It's the thumbnail where I say something about my sprayer blowing up.
The more videos you watch the more you'll understand but actually doing projects will give you your best sense of what YOU like!
Thanks again for your support, I really appreciate it and hope you'll continue to watch even after you come home from the hospital!
My best to you friend! ❤️

When I was young, there was very little I wasn't able to do. 55 yrs later, am paying the piper. Now, there is very little I am able to do without wondering where my pain pills were stuck. Call it eating humble pie. Fact is, unless it's pushing around a pile of paper work, I look around to see who is recruitable.😎
Crazy, I know but if I do get back into my childhood family business, I would be very selective on what projects are still doable for me.🤭

Looks good and I love your projects, but why oh why don't flippers paint the underside of some things. On this one in particular the underside of the internal struts were so obvious when the piece was flipped, which must happen in transportation.
