  • Toyota has rolled out updates to the MY22 Toyota LandCruiser Prado. While we already have a review of the 2021 Toyota LandCruiser Prado Kakadu (watch it here: • 2021 Toyota Prado revi... ), this is a review of the step down the ladder.
Paul Maric reviews the 2022 Toyota LandCruiser Prado VX, which represents far better value for money than the top-specification Prado Kakadu. Let us know what you think in the comments section!

Have a 2018 VX, love it. Nothing beats the Prado, do hard tracks, and up against other vehicles, never really struggles. If it starts to labour, just use the 4low, lock the centre diff and off it goes, rarely have had to use the rear diff lock. Still going strong, very quiet no issues. Great review Paul.

I drove a 2016/2017 Prado in North Africa ( Sudan ), road was full of massive potholes, cracks and all sort of things. Prado drove on the road like a champ.
Never enjoyed driving a car like driving a Prado, its an absolute beast! Going through potholes the Prado felt like a tank, going through any massive puddle of waters it was nothing for the Prado, the list goes on and on. I even had a small accident where someone (impatience) hit the right side pumper, fortunately his car took more damage and the Prado was like WASSUP. It honestly amasses me how Toyota managed to make such a legend SUV. If Toyota start selling medication, no one would be ever sick!

Hey Paul, another good review! I have now watched a number of your reviews about the prado, and yes not much has changed.
I bought the first prado 2015 gxl 2.8L 150PLC 6sp variant, and since than I’ve observed not much has changed. As we’re aware with Toyota, they tend to moves (if they move) a little slower than many other car companies but thats not necessarily a bad thing either, you don’t fix that which is not broken. I suspect their processes are a little more conservative than others - nothing wrong with that specially if it gets you home.

CarExpert, all of your car reviews are comprehensive and relevant.
FYI I have just taken delivery of this exact model and have several issues with it noting these most likely would not be picked up in a test drive:
    (1) the passenger front seat has no height adjustment nor lumber support. Prior to 2018 prado electric seats were fully adjustable for both driver and passenger. Most other manufacturers have fully adjustable seats.
    (2) The bi-led headlights are terrible; specifically the high beam (lack of spread, limited range, and annoying dead/shadow spots).
CarExpert - no vehicle reviewer seem to actually assess headlight performance (these days one assumes great highlights). Consumers generally do not have the opportunity to test the headlights while test driving vehicles, let alone assessing high beam performance. Please consider adding headlight performance to your thorough review format.

If I was to buy a 4WD for myself, I would buy a Prado GXL. Yes, they are slightly dated but for me, they are the sweet spot in the field of 4WDs.

I was thinking why you guys were reviewing a prado again considering you reviewed one earlier this year I think it was but Toyota is the king when it comes giving it’s cars the subtlest of updates. Also one little thing lads, when talking about the seats and their adjustments, I think it would be a good addition to mention in how many ways it adjusts on the particular variant on test and say it might differ on lesser or higher models.

Great review as usual, and I think you made the point that is what sells so many Prados - theres nothing that does everything as well as the prado. I bought a 2021 VX new in June and took it to Innaminka from Adelaide, through the Flinders (private properties 4wd tracks), up the Strezlecki, to Coogie Lakes and back all in complete standard trim. it was perfect, no tyre or suspension issues, and I was very comfortable in it. Definately the 4wd that does everything asked with ease. (previously owned 2017 LR Discovery 5 HSE paid $115k!- unreliable POS, GU patrol, D22 Navara etc. - the Prado is decent for the price IMHO)

  • @laurendaykin5256
    @laurendaykin5256 2 роки тому +49

We’ve had ours for 3 weeks (exact same in crystal pearl white) with the wheel on the back and really love it.
I’d by lying if I didn’t think it was an obscene amount of money for, as everyone has else has mentioned, a fairly dated car but resale was a huge factor for us. People never think about resale and depreciation when they buy new cars. You might save $20k upfront with the Everest but it’s like buying an iPhone and an Android and selling them 3 years later. Chalk and cheese. People just love these things and they really hold their value. Not to mention customer service, dealership network - all the standard things Toyota is unrivalled in.
We tinkered with the idea off holding off for the updated model but there’s rumours they’ll be delayed beyond 2022. So we figured we would buy this, keep it for five years then upgrade once they have ironed out any issues with the new series and offload ours as the warranty expires.
I’m glad you think this is the sweet spot in terms of models. We obviously agreed and all the extra specs aside on the Kakadu, the Bluray player entertainment system really got me over the line of refusing to buy a car at $100k with that technology in it. It’s crazy. We haven’t had media in discs, or any physical format for that matter in our house for almost a decade.
Also, convenient having the flat tail gate pack to get access without the need to open the barn door and although I prefer the look, we went with the tyre on the back. For practicality. Better for long trips with the long range tank, better around town (I hate filling up) and more convenient if you actually need to access the spare tire, or if you have a set of seperate off road tyres which you change out for that purpose.
Great review, as always. You’re my favourite car reviewer by far.

    Paul,
Always great videos and very informative. I wonder however; could you do a segment(s) of versus videos? To explain: maybe like a review of two/three vehicles running concurrently in the same video? Ie hiliux/triton/bt50 for example, or prado/Pajero sport/Everest. Aimed at 10 mins total, and at the important things like styling, driving, comfort, accessories (which you cover off quite well), chuck in the durometer too 😂
You could play with the format, but I think a side by side comparison would be great for potential buyers.

my parent has a lc prado 2022 TX-L (japan market) and it is a very good car.
we recently got 5k km and still going pretty strong
but i was just here to see a comparisson between tx, tx-l vx-vx-l, because i believe that those are the most common ones
i noticed that the transfer case from vx-l (japan market) is on the same place has in the kakadu.
also noticed that vx-l and kakadu are pretty much the same, but wannted to see that for myself, because i know someone who has vx-l and i could feel the diference between tx-l and vx-l from the rims, optional confort mode/sport(for vx-l), crawl control (for vx-l), headligths (halogen for tx-tx-l and LED for vx-l) and stuff like that.
and yes, i know you show australian specs and all that, but i would apreciate more if you could show those diferences.

    Hi Paul,
Do you think you could include seat adjustability for your reviews, it’s a common issue that seat adjustment on the drivers side is not the same as the passenger side, and it would be great to see if they mirror them or the passenger loses out on adjustment.
Also, worth noting that in many Toyota products, the passenger seat is set higher up than the drivers side, and as a result can impact seating for taller people when adjustments are lacking. It would be great to know this info for future reviews.

If Toyota and mind you Lexus, invest in Driver Assistance, Infotainment and finishing, the Europeans will struggle to compete.

If you want to know why Prado and Toyota are behind in tech take a look at any land rover review on UA-cam and you’ll see why. Toyota are ultra conservative with how reliable their tech is and that’s the reason their reliability is second to none.

It's a case of why fix what isn't broken. Like the cruise control stork. It's been the same since the 90s. I am surprised it hasn't been moved to the wheel front but nope. Still tacked up underneath. I love the prado and cruiser but their pricing is getting a little out of hand. Sat in a 300 sahara today and the sticker was 153k...

Paul- Just as an observation when you tried coming down that hill and how it almost took off on you, I am not sure if you did this, but normally when I am coming down such a hill I am in low range and then switch hill decent assist. The other thing I noticed was that seemingly useless little compartment under the radio, is normally are wireless phone storage centre. I noticed this by observing other Prado specs vids overseas. apparently this unit can be purchased and installed. Might be an idea to make that space useful. how's that Raptilian vehicle purchase going? :)

Love my 2010 Kakadu, it had done 165000 km snd still feels like new. Nothing has gone wrong with it. Bulletproof is the best way to describe my Prado. My mechanic, who also owns a Prado told me that when you work on them you can tell the difference over other cars. My car has the 4 litre petrol motor developed for Lexus, which will outlast 2 diesel motors. I would like some more modern technology but every time l look at replacing the Prado l am stuffed. I hate diesel and there is nothing else on the market that l would have the confidence in purchasing compared to my car which still has half a million kilometres left in it.
