Sorry guys - mistake on my part. The overseas Tank 500 is a V6 petrol, not a V6 diesel!
I think with the new OZ emmision rule, the V6 likely not going to be coming very soon
But that V6 is really good...

I drive the 300 and the Prado. Then I drove the Tank, and have to say, wow! Made the Toyota seem like they were years old in the drive and tech. The Tank leaves them in the dust a long long way back.
I have a tank 500 HEV in Thailand and it is one of the best cars I've had over many years including, BMW, Alfa Romeo, Range Rover Toyota. It's big and comfortable and a joy to drive and sit in because it is so spacious. It's luxury a low price.
Sure, you can turn water into wine
Ive had my Ultra for 3 weeks now and loving it.
How is the fuel consumption?
It’s ironic you raise the payload as a negative. 790kg is substantially more than you get in a Landcruiser 300, Y62Patrol, Prado, Everest or any other direct competitor that I am aware of. In fact, it’s up there with or better than the 1500 full size trucks from the US as well. The payload on the Tank 500 is therefore one of its relative strong points.
That's a good point. It's just worth pointing out given it has a 500kg lower towing capacity and it was called out in the Tank 300 review that we didn't mention it. We'll be including this in all of our reviews moving forward where towing is a factor.
For many many years, the 200/300 series could tow 3500kg, so say 10% on towball, that would leave you only 260/300kg payload remaining which is literally nothing for what most would say is the best and biggest tourer. This 790kg payload is probably the biggest when comparing similar type of cars (not utes)
Paul never gets excited over Chinese made cars, doesn’t matter how good they are
It's the slavery and atrocity factor of supporting the Communist party.
The number plate protrudes because it needs to be seen at certain angles and the spares gets in the way.
Exactly what I was thinking, and for speed cameras.
Snap. That’s exactly what I was just about to say. If it’s flat with the door or won’t be legal as will be obstructed from certain angles and for example, spore cameras might not be able to read it.
Similar to the Nissan Patrol which has lights in the bumper and fake ones on the D pillar. The bumper ones are needed as the right D pillar ones would be obscured by the spare wheel.
Yes, got to make it easy for those speed cameras. I would have expected Paul to know about that. @@jerrymyahzcat
@@johnemerson5383na..he doesnt know. Also reckons its so terrible when a reverse camera is offset to one side...but doesn't that the software is calibrated to compansate for that 😂😂😂😂

Test drove it 2 times here in NZ, I came from GLS 400d then bought a BMW M50d. Got really sick of value depreciation hence sold and bought this. So much value for money plus warranty. Lets see how this hold. 😊
Wait till you see the depreciation on these chinese car 🤣
Many, I mean many chinese GLS and X5 owners move to AITO M9. The sale of X5 dropped 30% last month due to the competition with M9.
@@liuyangyang Impressive and beautiful car judging by my quick search, but not available in Australia as of yet.
If depreciation is an issue toyota landcruiser is the only solution i think.
You bought this because you were sick of depreciation? Dude. This will depreciate even more than the models you had prior.
As you said, so many waiting on this review.
Thanks so much, truly appreciate your review.
I waited so long, hence bought it and actually drove it in today 😅
@@Ravs_Reviews😂😆
The numberplate location at the rear will be due to Australian Design Regulations. The numberplate needs to be visible from a certain degree angle from behind. There is the spare wheel in the way, so they have relocated its location so that it sticks out further to be visible from the sides.
While not perfect there doesn't seem to be any deal breaker issues.
The tank walked all over the recent Triton in the same offroad test. Quite impressive overall.
Also comfort, interior quality, torque....
How about longevity?
For many years, in the roof of the world in Xizang, China, and the hot and dry desert in Xinjiang, in these most harsh environments, tank brand vehicles have almost replaced these Japanese vehicles. In addition, tank brand cars have now appeared in large numbers in the cold Siberia.

Today I was searching the review of this car and you did it. Thank you so much Paul.
When the Tank 500 was on the market, I sold my Prado and get the Tank 500 Ultra. Better drive experience, more comfortable, more powerful but low price. Great car. With this money, you will just get the Ultra.

@@MrMagnat007 thanks
GWM(great wall) is really one of those brands that seems to hold up long term going by the used market. Cars and other auto gumtrees are full of ones well into the six figures km wise with 10-15 years on the road working for tradies. As long as the electronics hold up better on these fancier models, it's win win car brand for aussies. It's not like the japanese/euros or yank brands are helping our economy , frankly less than the Chinese given they take home a lot more margin from our market and don't build here anymore.,
Brand loyalty for anything but brass tacks practical reasons like reliability is folly.
Great review Paul well detailed. Please review the 2024 isuzu dmax
Thanks for the review very detailed. I am more confident that i took a right decision. Booked Dune Gold Ultra last month excited to get the delivery this month. No more waiting like Toyota...waited for more than year, eventually had to cancel.
Congratulations
I'm thinking of doing the same. I may get the Cannon Alpha instead of the Tank 500 though. It's a ute version of the Tank 500
@andrewstewart1644 didn't know GWM is launching UTE as well. Just saw on website, absolutely stunning. Good choice.

4:10 the number plate mount is so speed cameras can see the plate. Years back the Nissan Patrol had issues because the factory number plate mount hid the plate behind the spare wheel on one side.

Looks on ebay for non Australian spec numberplate holder 😂
I still can't believe the Triton Failed this uphill test so hard i was really looking forward to buy one
I'm really quite impressed with the features of this vehicle, hopefully long term durability will not disappoint.
ty for ur hard work to show us this car , I'm waiting to see hybrid version in Saudi Arabia
Lots of questions re: towing. How long can it sustain those power and torque figures if you’re towing a 3t trailer?
And those “safety” features which were turned off, do they stay turned off after the car is stopped and started again later? And are they mandated or just no ANCAP 5 star rating if they don’t have them?
Nice video
so far the best noise level control according to the spreadsheet? that's exciting~~~
Looking forward to the 4x4 mega test you normally run.
Definitely a car I would consider, only thing I don't like about it is the huge grille border. Why is it so big? I feel like the first mod would be to paint that border body color or remove it entirely.
So the whole world can see your a peasant 😊show off that china car badge with pride 💪
Yeah, as soon as it been released in China the first reviewer tint the grille in black (black car)
The overseas model is a 3.0 v6 twin turbo petrol. I dont believe there is a diesel model available at all.
Yuppp, that's the main problem, no diesel engine with any Tank
No one is wanting diesel anymore anyway and countries are slowly banning them due to emissions also.
Chinese crap
I don't think Chinese companies would further investing into diesel engines for passenger cars by looking at the current trend.
Thanks Paul, can you do another video on the ultra it will have much more features to enjoy and some of your complaints might be solved. Cheers.
One of the quieter cabins I’ve seen on carexpert with 56-65db. Good effort!
Brake feel is a worry particularly in regard to the emergency braking test, perhaps something to get used to if you had one
I guess it's about adaptation, as long as it's not a design or system flaw.
Based on how good this did on the moguls it would be nice to see how it handles the hill climb without the differential locked. This looks like an amalgam of an older sequoia with a larger, more modern rav4. Interesting design I think they did a decent job.
What was the clunking under breaking?
Will wait for more reviews coming from the market before consider it.
I tested mine ultra 0-100 in 7.3s with both original giti types and aftermarket Falken AT3w
What about when the battery is drained?
hows falken at3w? thinking get those for my tank300, what about noise?
@@TheMarkdogface the minimum battery level I saw is about 40% . I don’t feel a lot of difference tbh
@@lovenaomiwu noise wise pretty good. I changed my tank 300’s tyre to falken as well before I traded for the 500
Cant wait for the tow test uphill😂
Good review as usual. What I don't understand is why other modern vehicle manufacturers can't do something more decent with the quality and responsive of the screens along with the camera angles/view as in this model. All of these components aren't very expensive and readily available these days.
Wait until they get more market share and watch the price sky-rocket
Great video. Please review new gle and x5
GWM needs to bring Tank 400 to Australia to get it under $60k
It’s a PHEV with 37kwh battery,would be $10k more expensive…
Yet there isn’t a single plugin hybrid model being sold here in AU, my guess is that China doesn’t share the same regulations and standards when it comes to PHEV. Which is a shame because those plugin hybrids are where GWM’s real strength is and they are absolutely incredible.
As well as the Tank 700.
@@bboy349833591 plugin hybrids are where GWM’s real strength -- the Hi-4T/Z tech is outdated technology. No good at all
It looks good performance overall. However, we will need to see in the long term as once it reaches 100k or more, the problems will appear. I like your review as always!
I'm more for the Tank 700. Has more character and lesser a copy cat. Just saying..
Great video btw!
Hi Paul, you make a comment in the video about the vehicle "runs out of steam" when the battery gets lower. Does this mean when towing for example you won't have access to full torque once the battery is depleted?
Hi Paul, for your next review, do you mind adding test of the space of the front passenger seat, second row and third row when there is a rearward facing car seat?
Thank you
One thing about Paul he gives every type of reviews
I watched a lot of reviews but this one is the best I can't wait for this SUV to come to South Africa
Great review mate. I think it's good for the money your paying. Just have to see how good they are long term. I'll definitely pick that over a prado
Obviously not better than prado long term
I simultaneously love and hate this car. What a car. Such great value. But just what we need, even more people able to drive ridiculous behemoths on the road.
On the tailgate thing, I understand the issue of needing a tailgate's width behind the car to open it. But is it really much more than a lift tailgate where you need a tailgate's height behind the car? Plus with a lifted tailgate there can be problems with low ceilings, e.g. a multi-story car park. And with a swing tailgate you can partially open it, which is less of an option with a lift tailgate. Not sure. I've only ever had hatchbacks.
The warning on the dash sounds like its limited by the transmission after your first launch control. Not a worry for that, but I wonder how well it will last with constant towing.
Thanks Mate
Top of my list to replace current 4wd
Looks good
I am a little confused as none of the other manufacturers seem to mention a payload capacity. Have seen this with LDV, GWM cars. Keen to know why? Does it mean these are poor or honest?
Golden rule of selling something..... Never lie. Just don't mention shortcomings.
I think we need a shorter person to start testing the 3rd row. Paul is properly suffering in the 3rd row. 😂
😅😅😅
Hi Paul
You should do the tank 500 Ultra review!
4:02 I’d say it’s a ADR for license plate viability from the right hand side of the vehicle.
Man, you seemed way more impressed with the car during the testing than your final word suggested.
GWM nailed it with the Tank 500, it’s been selling exceptionally well in its home country China. Very well received all around. Value for money is incredible.
interior yes but exterior needs a lot work to be done yet.
Disagree looks better than ToyOtas dinosaur designs.
@@mhmood4394 Design is subjective
Although worth noting in China it is a plugin hybrid which is a lot better than this hev version, it runs up to 110km on just electric. Sadly for regulations reasons they can’t be imported into Australia, would’ve been a perfect family car otherwise.
We drove about 3,000kl in Xinjiang China they were everywhere, my friend said there were probably a lot of hire car ones, but I could tell lots were private owned by stickers and after market mods. It was crazy to see so many...
I believe the rear number plate is sticking out as much so that it can be visible at an angle and not obscured by the spare tyre.
Impressive Package. Would put it on the consider list if I was in the market for a offroad capable family hauler.
That 10 speaker sound system sounds interesting..
The car is very impressive,,,,good value too👌,,,Way to go Paul jxt make sure you do the ultra 500 again pliz
Was waiting for this review for weeks, disappointed you only reviewed the base model not the ultra 😢 was there a reason you didn't review the ultra ?
Wasn’t available when we filmed it but we will try and get one in to test.
@@CarExpertAus that's such a shame hopefully you guys can get it in your reviews are always the most thorough. Will you be doing a review on the Alpha when it's released ?
Looks cool. I think you may have been doing the cruise control/self steering test wrong. On the H6 you have to pull the cruise towards you twice to activate cruise+steering and it has a separate icon. Its weird as even without activating you can feel the ELK working but its much lighter and not as active on the steering. I suppose it's a problem if it left you with the impression, it was on.
im impressed at the tank 500. and the stats on the spec sheets (in the link) are pretty impressive. Its as quiet as a lexus!
In regards to the tailgate opening sideways, it's not going to protrude further than the driver getting out of the car in the first place
when's the dmax review coming out
I ordered a rav4 and it cost me 60,500,I still have to wait 16 months 😂
Cancel it, such overpriced car, many better and cheaper and in stock options
RAV4 only costs $23,500 in China. You can get a four-wheel drive 2.0L RAV4 without waiting. Yes, this is a true story.
Thanks
This should have been a V6 for Australia with 3.5T towing to complete with leading 7seater 4X4s
Why?
Our MG HS shipped in a mode that was configured to lower emissions for the UK/EU market - it was so laggy and unresponsive. The community recently got the info needed to change its “mode” and everyone’s cars have just perked up like they’re in a shallow sport mode with even better fuel efficiency somehow. I suspect a lot of Chinese brands have done the same thing. Dealerships in Aus weren’t clued up as how to change the mode when preparing the vehicle for sale.
With the rear swing door, you also gotta account for towing aswell as a mate has a prado but he extened his towhitch/drawbar setup so he can open the door fully
Great review as usual. The boys on carsauce managed to get 0-100 times of 6.97 and 6.93 seconds back to back.
I think it depends on the battery charge level, once the battery is drained you are relying on the 2.0l engine to haul 2.5 tonne
Yeah, I was also wondering this.
I like the TV ad.
Did I see "Drift" mode in the advanced off road settings? I think that needs to be tested :D
Could the front design be any more derivative? Toyota Sequoia/Tundra (previous gen). The design overall looks like it came from 10+ years ago. But very capable nonetheless with an attractive interior.
Paul is the best!!! Autograph please... I'm in perth
@carexpert, How’s this tech stack up against your Raptor?
Infotainment tech is way smoother and easier to use. But lacks functionality with connected services like remote start.
9.5/10 such a great vehicle for the money! Great work bud :)
Here in Pakistan the tank500 costs 243,000 Australian dollars. And the new Land cruiser prado costs 355,000 Australian dollars. It's expensive but still way cheaper than competition. The prices are high because they are imported as completely built units and not being assembled here.

I like the tank 500 in terms of luxury definitely more luxurious than the new Prado the engine is a V6 unlike the Prado 4 cylinders + tank 500 cheaper than the Prado, but what actually stops me is the availability of the spare parts when I need it in future would be available?
Of course not and resale value is very low
Why do I need to care about resale value? If you purchase a vehicle, you buy it for yourself, not the next user. I didn't say the tank is better than the Prado. My point is that you get what you pay for.
What about the head rest of the third row seat?
The last reviewer pinched 'em
You just need pull them up, it does have them
What a beautiful weather,

Looks like the Chinese are taking over Oz in more ways than one - here in the States we can’t get Chinese cars or SUVs. However for the price of the flimsy looking GWM Tank I’d much rather go for the Patrol with its roaring 5.6L V8 - sold here as an Armada - and get a limited slip diff and diff locks if I was going off-road, or a 4Runner or even an Ineos 4x4
They are not even in the same price range?
Please redo 0-100, there was launch mode error. Two runs with battery at 80% and 30%
Why half cook midium rare it🤷🏼♂️
You'd think they could program an eco-mode that will use the hybrid to give you 1000km range rather than raw power.
