The facelifted 2018 Toyota Prado Kakadu is finally here and it now comes with extra towing capacity (3000kg), a new face and a revised interior.
But, at 2500kg, is the Prado getting a bit big for its boots? Paul Maric finds out.

An old myth. Plenty of issues with the 2.8TD in the Prado.

I agree, new diesels have nowhere near the longevity of things like the TD42 or the 1HZ/1HD. I’d actually have the petrol 6 over the new 2.8, but theyve discontinued it now, so that disappoints me.
it is not about going wrong. it is about what will change around you.(already lacking lane assist and auto parking) that you would want to have or forgo
Yeah, I have it on good authority from a toyota mechanic that the 2.8’s are having some pretty serious issues. I really was looking forward to seeing the 1UR in the new gen, but they axed it.
wow the front end looks so muscular now. Liked the previous one, but now i like it even better! thank god i held back from buying one last year when there was a massive sale for one since i wanted to keep my landcruiser. now i might just be able to let the LC go and get one of these. But if only toyota will give us a v6 tt diesel or maybe even the V8 diesel in these prado. if they did that, i would buy it in a heart beat!
why do you want a prado over a landcrusier?
Louie Lambretta because doing 25l per 100km is not fun. So much to the point that its a garage queen. In the past 9 years of owning her, I have driven just over 30k Kms on it.

Louie Lambretta because it actually does way better fuel economy than the v8 petrol land cruiser. I know that it can actually achieve 15 l per 100km since my mates land cruiser does that. Once in a while. Though you're right, it might not make sense at all since they can still be thirsty.
You know you can get a v8 diesel which is whats in a landcruiser
Prado Not only towing 3000 kg it's emotionally towing it's lovers around the world.
My brother Prado is Superb in reliability and offroad
He is the one who taught us how to walk on mud and drink salt water.
They don't get their parts donored like us

If Toyota would do a 6 cylinder diesel this would be perfect. Look forward to trying this new model though.

Daniel Cox What do you mean? For me diesel is better for off-roading with Its low down torque rather than having a v6/v8 petrol Which needs to be higher in the rev range to get the same or similar torque numbers
@@danielcox4398 Australians love our diesels. As you heard 98% of Prado sales are Diesel. Even the big brother Cruiser is sold almost only with diesels.

I drive a 2014 Kakadu, has the same suspension as the new one so I can't see why it would be better. But it doesn't need to be ..! It's a great car to drive.

Wait it has the same engine as the hilux and heavier. Its good, but the engine is somewhat lacking tho.
The engine is pathetic. Way too small. Boosting small engines isn't the answer. We want more cylinders!

Just bought mine, the TXL version 2020 , it amazes me how cheap they are in other countries. IN Colombia the TXL version is 70K while the VX version is worth 85k-95k.
In Sri Lanka 🇱🇰, diesel Prado could be easily US $ 200,000 range...😢

That feature will make the top range model worth your money if Toyota did put in a sunroof.

What an awesome truck. I really hope Toyota brings this to the USA. Compared to the Lexus GX460 the body styling is better, has better off-road angels, has a rear locker and likely available at a slightly lower price point.
Canada needs more Prados and Land Cruisers.
No mention of the DPF, plus why do they continue with the a rear swing door?

Yeah - protect the main beam light at all costs. It does not matter if one of the sides of your jeep is missing once you can see where your going.

I noticed you lost your front number plate. Did this happen while wading through water? This happens to me too on my Pajero. You'd think manufacturers would have designed something to prevent this by now. Maybe they're assuming [incorrectly] drivers who takes then offroad would get bullbars.

We don't think you can? Pretty sure the indicator is more important than your music though.

The off road settings are simply too many. It's been a problem since Toyota introduced the MTS. They should try making the system more integrated as Land Rover does.

Is this Toyota LC Prado been updated to not be so underpowered on the highway? That's my main problem.

I won't diss the Prado in any parameter but coming to spending money, I bought a pajero sport for more than 20k less. In strict dollar terms I could not justify the premium Prado provides for 20 thousand dollars

this is insane
i make 2000 km every month and need to fill the tank every 500 km which cost me near 400 USD per month
20 litre per 100 km? I've a 2013 Prado 3 litre diesel and I regularly get 8 litres per 100 km's indicated on my trip computer, highest its been was about 15 but that's with a 2 ton trailer in tow!

Can't believe 98% go for the gutless diesel. Why is that? Unless you are a retiree pulling a van around Oz I just don't get it. I tried both in the 120 series. Petrol all the way.
Ben Post Diesels are cheaper per km to drive and more reliable. If you’re off-road in Australia and break down an Ivan Milat equivalent is always nearby.

For the price of a Prado Kakadu, one can buy a new Land cruiser 200, entry level, or a well looked after and extra slapped on 2nd hand Cruiser.

Hard to believe Prada is not sold in the US. What’s wrong with Toyota.
The 4Runner frame down share identical parts, gx460 does too. The gx460 is a luxurious version of the padro and the 4runner is a simplified version of the padro
The 4Runner shares the 150 landcruiser padro v6, and gx460 has v8.
It may be expensive but it was made honestly by the hands of Japanese in Tahara /Aichi Plant
They got everything else right and then failed in the engine department. It's underpowered! What a shame! They should have at least a V6 diesel as an option. The reviewers may not always notice it because they do the reviews without any significant weight onboard.
