Everything about how Jon Batiste explained his emotions: the body language, the hand gestures, the shifting of tones. He was born to be a storyteller, and he captures, even in a small way, the impact of Kobe.

antinapay. Beautifully said. There is a special on you tube on Jon's newest LP. I was blown away at the breadth of his work, the beauty of his soal. It reviews his life, his work, how he hooked up with Stephen. I hope you can find the vid. It so inspired me. He seems as beautiful on the inside as he is on the out.

Stephen not just honoured Kobe and his daughter but the 7 other people lost in the crash. He said he never got the chance to meet Kobe but he certainly understands grief and the pain that the families of those who died will endure for the rest of their lives.
EDIT: Colbert is so profound when he’s being funny but mostly when he’s being serious. He’s explanation to his statement “What punishments of God aren’t gifts?” during his interview with Anderson Cooper about grief was so heartfelt and sincere and probably one that made the most sense.

It also might have helped that the hero of LOTR had suffered similar grief. In the books, Frodo Baggins lost both his parents as a child in a sudden boating accident (Come to think of it, a lot of the Fellowship have lost at least one parent; Sam, Boromir and Legolas are all missing a mother and Aragon's lost both parents, his father being killed when he was a kid).
One of my friends is a die-hard LOTR fan who lost her dad as a kid, and she's told me that having Frodo be such a relatable character really helped her at the time.
I've always wondered if Stephen was the same.

Even as a big Kobe fan growing up, I'm way more upset at the thought of his daughter never being able to reach her potential/achieve her goals than I am at losing Kobe. Kobe got to live as close to a full life as possible. Accidents happen. Losing him at 41 is way too soon. But his daughter and her teammates had their whole lives ahead of them and were just starting to figure out who they wanted to be.

I didn't know the he'd lost his father and two brothers in a crash. That's heartbreaking. My heart is breaking for the people who are mourning this loss of Kobe, his daughter and the others who died in this crash. I'm not a sports fan by any stretch of the imagination, but I am a child, a mother, a grandmother, a niece, an aunt and most of all a human being. I have never lost a child, but I have lost my dad, my husband, my great niece, my favorite nephew that was more like a son and a slew of other family and friends. The only pain I can't feel for these people is the loss of a child. I can't knew what Kobe's wife is feeling having lost her daughter or what the other parents are feeling and I'm thankful for that. I cried when I learned that they had just had another child in June. That baby girl will never have a chance to know the great man that was her father. That's beyond sad because she truly had a great, loving father. Idk if these other people had children or not because I can't deal with that much sadness so I'm avoiding knowing those things. Please continue to pray for these people in whatever way you pray and if your coming m get the chance please show them some love and support. Oh just show whoever you're around some extra love and support. You never know when that chance will be gone.

Can I be a giant asshole for a moment? Ten people per DAY die in auto deaths... in California alone. Only in California, out of the whole world, every day. When he read the other names I thought of the reason why: so people don’t complain online about “the other people!” Yes it IS tragic (and that’s why I’m aware I’m being insensitive)... but I have as much expectation that he names all the passengers & pilot as I do he names the 10 California drivers killed yesterday and the ten that will be killed tomorrow. Finally, the black box ask only makes sense in the context of it having affected him personally. The elites who burn the fuel and cash to ride in helicopters are important, but perhaps asking the NHTSA for more stringent safety standards could save more people for the same cost. Speculation. Okay, thanks for letting me be rude everybody. Respect Colbert, RIP all those we lost.

Damn, Stephen. You are the ONLY host to read off every single name of the victims live and post in the names in the description. All the other hosts have said 'our hearts go out to all those affected". But you are the only one to list them off by name. I didn't think I could love you more than I already do, but you proved me wrong. Your schedule means you are one of the later ones to report on this tragedy, but when you do, you go all out. I have so much love and respect for you right now for doing so.
*EDIT 2* Okay, so Kimmel mentioned it too. Sorry I missed a few seconds from a 40 minute long video. It was an understandable oversight.
*EDIT* Because people are attacking me, I will respond. I said, "Colbert is the only host I've watched to list off the other victims BY NAME." As in, not just "our hearts go out to all those affected" but actually naming names. I watched Kimmel, Fallon, and Conan. None of them mentioned the victims by name. Now others have said "Kimmel did a 40 minute video, Colbert only did 7 minutes, that's not all out." Missing the point yet again. I meant he went all out in listing the names of all the victims, not the length of the episode. Please read my entire comment before you attack me.

How very lucky and fortunate we are to have the Stephen and Jon show. I'm a relatively new convert, and I've past the half century mark so I do have lots to compare them to, but they consistently blow me away, mostly with their loving, compassionate common sense. I don't know that we've ever had anything like this show before, in terms of it's willingness to go to these beautiful emotional depths, consistently. We need authenticity in this world, to show us it actually matters. And dignity, integrity. And good for these folks, they give it. They bare their souls, they give their all, and even when skewering someone there's an air of common sense and compassion, which is really what we need more than anything. Couldn't ask for better role models, on top of top shelf entertainers!

Most people can only identify Kobe and maybe her daughter in this incident. However, though it is a good gesture to name other people lost in this tragedy, can we keep the same energy when it comes to any and all tragedies that happen around the world where only American lives lost are the only ones identified. Especially plane crushes or terror incidences.

Thank you Stephen for disclosing your own loss and agony and for using your position to encourage a change to create better helicopter safety. I too lost my father in a plane accident, happened to be a small Navy plane on July 7 1953. All the records are gone, but it did help to know that a faulty left tail flap mechanism caused the plane's explosion in the air. there were others in the plane who also lost their lives. I was just 8 mos old at the time; I know it changed my mother forever. It is, as you described, agony. I'm sorry for Kobe, his daughter, and thanks for reading out all the names of everyone who died on that helicopter. It matters.
