I got to see him and his band here in NYC and they were amazing.
I was moved to tears several times here: his standing ovation, his humbleness....mentioning civil rights marches.
And I'm SO happy for Jon Batiste and his wife!

It's so good to know that Stephen is Jons friend and not just his employer. Those last few minutes where Stephen talks about Jon recently marrying and how they had some personal conversations about it says that they are more than just people who work together and that there is love between them.
Jon is Stephen's son, at this point. The way he loves him goes beyond friendship!

I’m really just discovering this wonderfully gifted man. What a heart of love that Jon displays for the gift and the messages of music that he shares with the world. His beautiful smile and contagious laugh just make us all smile and have such a renewed hope for this world we’re experiencing right now. And ohhhh his beautiful lullaby “Butterfly” I simply can’t get enough of, it takes to the the beautiful memories of my beloved son Matt who we lost to an untimely accidental drowning four months ago… I always think of my sweet son’s smile, laughter and zest for life every time I hear the words to this beautiful song. oh i’m so incredibly sorry about the loss of your son. coincidentally, as i read this i have a very close friend on my mind who we lost in 2018 to depression, the anniversary of his passing is next week, his name was also Matt. he was absolutely beloved by everyone who knew him, he was a traveler, a writer, a musician, a survival expert, a practitioner of martial arts… he did so many things and touched so many peoples lives. he was 39, way too young to go. here’s to our Matts, they shine on the other side like jewels so we will find them when we cross over as well. stay strong. @@janicespann7856

That last bit when Stephen congratulates Jon on his recent marriage and Jon says how much their private conversations have helped him and her on their journey...that was when someone really started cutting onions. Such a humble and humane man, is Jon Batiste. How lucky we are that Stephen shares him with us every night.

Stephen is a proud Papa. His love and admiration for Jon (and Jon's reciprocation) is so refreshing.
One reason Jon is so down-to-earth: He's from one of the great New Orleans black musical families. His dad, his grandad, his uncles - they're all great musicians, and probably his mom and sisters and aunts, too. Among the Batistes, musical excellence isn't special, and you get no passes for that, no excuses for not being a good human being.

The amount of love Stephen has for Jon is obvious. You can tell they are truly good freinds. So many show host/bandleaders relationships out there you can tell they don't really connect. Or maybe really even like each other. These two guys love each other. The pride in Colberts eyes was adorable, he was so proud of him in so many ways.

This is heart achingly beautiful. Knowing he had such a huge accomplishment while his new wife is in the hospital battling cancer for the second time puts the dichotomy of life on display. You could see the depth of contemplation in his eyes when Stephen brought up his marriage. I love that music is his spirituality, I’m sure it’s been so helpful in these times. Hugs and prayers to him and his Suleika.
To see that Jon and Stephen have such a loving and trusting friendship is so heartwarming. Honestly, is there anyone who makes your soul smile more than Jon Batiste ! What an amazing man!

Stephen Colbert is one of the finest humans on television. He knows how to put the focus on his guest and you can feel his admiration and respect for others. He uses his platform for tremendous good and celebrates love on the daily. Evie is one lucky lady.
You can't help but love this guy. He doesn't even have to talk or play music. He has this kind face that makes you wanna be friends with him. So happy he got the recognition he deserves.
You've got that right. Every time I see him playing the piano, I smile. His joy in playing doesn't just show on his face, his hands happily great the piano keys.

These guys are so freaking pure and wholesome together!! Also for anyone who doesn't know Jon's wife is currently battling cancer. They decide to elope after 8 years together before she started her next round of treatment. He seems completely devoted to her, so beautiful.

For some reason I believe that there is a hidden message in what you're saying. Yes Jon Baptiste deserved all of his awards, Will Smith deserved his award too. Now, here are two men with wives that have medical conditions. Will Smith's wife has alopecia and that causes loss of hair. Jon Baptiste wife also has a medical condition leukemia and that causes loss of hair due to the treatment she has to endure. What if the tables were turned and Chris Rock made fun of Jon Baptiste's wife's bald head? I don't think Chris Rock would have made fun of Jon Baptiste's wife but, what if he did? Would everyone ridicule Jon Baptiste if he had gotten up to defend his wife? Chris Rock claims that he did not know about Jada's autoimmune disease. The bottom line is this, even if Chris Rock did not know about Jada's autoimmune disease he should have never made fun of her bald head. Common Sense should tell everyone that when you see someone with a bald head you should not make fun of them. You don't know what's going on in their life, they could have a medical condition. Chris Rock took it upon himself to humiliate Jada. What Chris Rock did was take the attention off of Jada's Beauty and her beautiful dress and had everyone focus on her bald head. I can just imagine that Jada probably had a hard time leaving the house to go to that stupid award show with her husband but she made an effort for him. A woman's hair is her glory and not having it anymore is extremely difficult. I can imagine when the doctor told her that she had alopecia she went home and told her husband and she cried in his arms. Jada puts up a brave front but I know she's hurting inside. When a woman gets dressed up to go to a special event she wants to feel beautiful. She doesn't want to be made fun of at a special event. I'm not saying what Will Smith did was right but I can understand it. We all make mistakes. Nobody on this planet is perfect. I forgive Chris Rock for telling that awful joke and I also forgive Will Smith for slapping Chris Rock.

She was involved w/ someone else when she got sick the first time, but Jon was a really supportive friend and came to the hospital and played music outside her room. She wrote about all of it in her book which is quite good if you haven't read it.

Jon's wife is struggling with cancer... he comes across as such a positive presence so I had no idea they were having a hard time. Even here he just subtly alludes to it instead of talking about it directly. I can see that being the thing Stephen would have talked to him about.

Jon's humility and sweet disposition are always a much needed spot of happiness. He still seems in disbelief, aww it's so special to know how much of his family was there with him. That much sweeter of a moment. Grand pa has to be an amazing man to have helped raise such a soulful talented gentleman. Bet he laughs like him. Others accomplishments feel good with the person who earned them is just genuinely good.
I don't think this moment will be rare for him, many more Grammys in his future for sure.
Edit, Jon's wife has leukemia and is currently battling it. I don't think they've mentioned that on the show but I googled to see if there were wedding photos and I'm crestfallen. Poor guy. I hope she beats it and he can genuinely genuinely celebrate all the good things they have and he has earned. I hope to read that she has beaten cancer by Christmas.

I love that they're friends in real life and that Stephen knew Jon was married. That is just the cutest stinking thing I've heard all day. You can tell Stephen was just bursting to congratulate Jon on his marriage. What a pure friendship between two deeply talented and lovely men.
No other host has made their band leader a valued partner like this. From the moment Stephen went down to LA and asked Jon to help make the show (vs 'be on it') to this very day, the love, support, respect, and consistent paycheck all honor Jon's contributions to the team and show Colbert's integrity as a human and a boss.
Quality people are surrounded by quality people. If you didn't know Colbert, all you'd need to know is his relationships with Evie and Jon and you could instantly deduce his character.

Can't imagine what they're going through but so glad they've found each other and have people like Stephen to support them through the tough times.

This interview is so different from all the other ones. Rather than putting on a lot of showmanship like Steven does with the other guests, which can be fun, this was like a conversation between 2 great friends. Loved every second of it ❤️
They are close friends, and I'm glad they don't gloss over it on tv; in fact, we've seen Stephen Colbert give heartfelt speeches of gratitude for their profound friendship.
I don't think anyone can put on the glib show business facade with Jon Batiste; he is so genuine that there's no space for fakery in a conversation. He's pretty good at not giving information away when he wants to keep it private, but he's never not authentic.
In the first few years that I saw him interact with Stephen on the show, Jon seemed so happy but inarticulate that I wondered if he was high. Having seen him be perfectly articulate and unusually direct and profound in the last two years, I think he's a genuinely joyful and positive-minded person (rather than drug-addled, lol) -- I think he gets into the zone when he's playing, and it's perhaps difficult for him to switch from thinking in music to using words.
I wish him and his wife solace, moments of tranquility, and fearlessness when they need it.
To be fair, his interviews with Jon Stewart also have that flavor!

In 2020, he co-composed the score for the Pixar animated film Soul, for which he received an Academy Award, a Golden Globe Award, a Grammy Award and a BAFTA Film Award. This year he got five Grammy Awards from 14 nominations, including an Album of the Year win for his album We Are.
