    I respect artists the most when they are really personal and honest. When they speak their minds and don’t feel restricted by public imago. And Deadmau5 really has to be one of the most genuine artists I have ever seen. Mad respect. I might just like a couple songs of his (especially Strobe, further on Faxing Berlin (Piano), the Veldt, Channel 42, and a few more), but I gotta admit my appreciation of Joel’s honesty.

    As someone who has studied production and engineering for 7 years, I absolutely agree with Joel. Always.
    If you think he is talking gibberish in his strong opinions, you don't understand the depth and meaning of his comment. And I am not being ignorant.
    I see way too many people disagree with Joel. People, who have no idea what he is actually talking about.
    Deadmau5 is literally comparable to Daft Punk. They both did/do something huge in the industry. He is one of the biggest pioneers in electronic music, where as Martin Garrix, David Guetta etc. are total copies of each others in how they do things and way below Joels level in every way.

      Martin Garrix is a genuinly nice guy so i won't say anything ill minded about him. BUT most of is shit nowdays isnt his own productions.. He teams up with, lets say Brooks and let Brooks do all the shit, then puts his name on the track for exposure.
      Thats what EDM has gone to unfortunately...

      Most people don't understand the deeper meaning in movies, series', books or games either.
      What's shallow and just dumb fun still manages to sell just as well as work that is just as fun but also has a deep meaning.
      It's pretty much the same thing in all fields of creative work. Something doesnt have to be artistically found, it simply needs to entertain the masses to be successful. Only those that have some understanding of the medium and it's artistic capabilites will understand the genius behind it - and sadly not many people have this understanding.

      He calls out the _"EDM"_ industry for what it is and for that, I respect him. The industry is so lifeless and commercial. Very few artists have any personality or ever speak their mind. It's all prepackaged and business oriented. This is painfully reflected in much of the music too, which has become extremely homogeneous in sound even across genres.

    He's right to call out the industry. _"EDM"_ has become so commercial and lifeless over the past decades. It's 90% promotion and branding, 10% actual music. The music itself has also become very homogenised in sound even across genres. Most genres use the same structure(s) and chord progressions, which has resulted in extremely predictable music to the point of insulting.

      @CJMattias 6 років тому +4

      Exactly what the comment above says. It requires no skill to layer audio samples and send the song to a mastering engineer. This is what for example Martin Garrix did. Even Martin made a video about how easily he made "Animals" with audio samples and sent the track to an engineer.
      Engineering your own sounds like deadmau5 deserves way more respect. Anyone can put premastered pre-created sound samples next to each other. Rarely do mainstream artists create their own percussion or even synth sounds like deadmau5.

      If you know much about Joel, you know he collects some very unique and vintage audio equipment. A big part of the reason is because there are audio effects that you simply cannot achieve without said equipment, surprisingly. This equipment is analog, and unless you know how to use it to your advantage, you straight up can't make some kinds of sounds with newer and/or digital equipment. Joel has the knowledge to get the sounds that he wants and has the money to get the equipment to do it, as opposed to just screwing around in Fruity Loops until you get something that sounds "good enough" or doing the music equivalent of hiring a ghost writer.

    • @Tamarocker88
      @Tamarocker88 2 роки тому +3

      @@CJMattias That's a bit reductive to claim that it requires no skill to layer audio samples. It takes no skill to absent-mindedly smash your fist onto a keyboard and make a cacophony of noise. It absolutely takes skill to compose something that sounds good, regardless of whether a mastering engineer polishes it in the end. Even someone like Martin Garrix who isn't on the same level as Deadmau5 has skill. Composing a competent song, even utilizing samples, and then mixing them and making it sound good enough to get to mastering absolutely requires skill. Mastering is but one step in the whole process. The mastering engineer can't take a jumbled mess of nonsensical noise and bad notes and make it sound good. They can only polish something. Most performing artists of every genre send their tracks to a mastering engineer. Only the elite few will record, mix, AND master their own stuff. The majority send their stuff to both mixing and mastering engineers. To claim someone has no skill because they pay someone to master their tracks is both elitist and moronic.

    I get it but at the same time i think he takes it too personal sometimes. The market is geared towards singles and its easier to create a good single than it is to craft your own unique sonic style. I think that's what he's getting at by saying it's disposable... the music is TECHNICALLY good because its in key and is coherent or whatever but whats most important is putting your own individual touch instead of just copying and pasting trends. Being original is the only way to maintain longevity and if a person can do that without much technical training then that's cool and they're still progressing the culture. That's punk af and Joel should know that punk comes with good and bad seeing he likes to rock misfit shirts haha. The more assesible things become the more generic/disposable it becomes but at the same time it provides people who would never have access to anything as powerful to genuinely express themselves and create a breath of fresh air by doing so.

I suspect that it has to do with the accessibility of things. the audience cannot appreciate skill if they dont know it, alot of people dip their toes but never swim, because swimming take alot more time and you can only post once on social media that you know how to swim before people start calling you out for showing off. and after all you have to swim to appreciate the speed of Michael Phelps if not it the high school champ will look the same.
