The album "Cross" by Justice from 2007 is an incredible album that uses 3 distinct sampling techniques - but that's not quite what makes this album so good. Let's dive into the samples, the production, and the musical world of Justice's debut album.

Well done stuff (as per usual). Thanks Greats!
Man you gotta do a video like this for The Avalanches "Since I left you!" That album needs so much more recognition for it's incredible sampling!
I thought of that album the moment I saw this video.
YES
I've never heard of it. I'll have to check it out
Nevermind, I forgot they did frontier psychiatrist 😂 fantastic album.
That might be an impossible task 💀
Great suggestion! I remember picking that album up when it came out. I was blown away. After having been blown away by Endtroducing, Since I met you just took sampling to a whole new level.
I used to bump D.A.N.C.E and Genesis so much when I was young and I still revisit this album to this day. I’m glad you covered it
It's so good 🔥
Have you heard the WWW remixes? I love them but I’m curious what they’re like for someone who’s nostalgic for the original songs.
Amazing album
{looks at username} Remember when Kanye lost to Justice & Simian at the EMA's, and threw a tantrum? Pepperidge Farm remembers. 😏
_I flew over the _*_Grand Canyon_*_ in my video! I had _*_Pam Anderson_*_ in my video!_ 😭
the leaky archives boogeyman is in the justice samples comment section
Man not only do I get a brand new justice album, but a Digging the Greats video on their absolute best album? I must be the luckiest birthday boy of all time! Always a pleasure watching you breakdown incredible albums like this one.
Happy birthday 🔥 made this one just for you 🫵

happy belated 🎉
I got 86’d from a club in Seattle for playing waters of Nazareth in a dj set. Nobody had ever heard it. No one knew how to handle it. Good times.
Same happened to me but with pursuit by gesaffelstein.
no one man should have all that power
@@Countfapula69sick song!
@@Countfapula69I would’ve started a riot if I was in the crowd
@@d0nn13m0n0 What does "86'd" mean, please?
First time seeing/hearing it (I'm in the UK).
Shocked me you did this album but it is excellently produced
It's crazy how good it is 🔥
It really is a great album!
Was not expecting a video on this one! Great surprise. This album got infinite play at the record store I worked at back in 2008
Shoutout to my college roommate Will who used to blast this album almost every day! He was the one who got me into electronic stuff and really enhanced my music studies. I hope he achieved his dream of running a French bakery ...
Justice?!?! omg im insanely hyped they're getting some love here, criminally underrated
Not at all anymore. And it’s starting to be the opposite actually, since the last album
I’ll have you remember that Woman Worldwide won a Grammy lol ❤
They were one of the biggest acts after their first album came out
“Underrated” give me a break. They were the biggest dance act in the world back in 2007.
This album caught me off guard 4 years ago and you are right. There is no way to just listen to one track. You can feel robbed if you don't finish the album. I love it. The speed, the brightness, the beautiful violence of the strings throughout. Ohh! Ohh my. It's nearly narcotic.
You deserve to have a series on Netflix with your content. The amount of research and knowledge that goes into each episode is just amazing 🤩
Fr
Oh hell yeah! I’d watch Netflix again for that!
Better on HBO.

Doing the Newjack sample chops live was absolute madness. Cheers to you mate.
I remember seeing in an interview, they spoke about why the compression is so harsh. They said they simply didn't know how compressors work, so they overdid it with the threshold and makeup gain. Sounds amazing today as it did when it came out.
They were joking, they did music and wrote songs even before Justice
It was produced in Garage band, and their sound is so connected to the Apple compression.
I also remember fellow French artist and label mate at the time, SebastiAn, getting some credit for introducing them to heavy use of compression. Important thing to remember about the French electronic circuit is that these guys share tips and methods with each other. French touch is heavily connected
Hahaha that's awesome.
So amazed this track is being broken down by you! This came out when I was studying sound engineering and I brought it in to show the staff. They were so jealous and all went red in the face. It was such a new sound that really influenced plenty of music afterwards. Everyone wanted that chorused bass sound, distorted hats, white noise snare, quickshot samples and heavily artistic sidechain compression.
Interestingly a lot of that was going on in drum n bass (distorted hits, heavily chorused bass), but applied to the template of house/disco it takes on an entirely new form. Love Cross, it’s so heavy and full!
Also they killed it at Coachella this year!!! They have some videos you can watch on UA-cam.
Not only their music is good, their show is amazing. I had the chance to saw them live the other day and oh God, all the lights and movements are so full of little details, just like the micro-samples of this album. If you can, you need to see them live at least once in your life.
Justice definitely looked at Daft Punk's sampling techniques and went "hold my croissant" like it's crazy
Love that you also do electronic albums, much respect!
The way you break everything down into processable chunks is insane. This channel is goated and honestly underappreciated, you deserve so many more subs.
Loving how far this channel has come, that you are breaking down the art of sampling across all Genres, and that you are giving shine to "Newjack" because that song slaps and these yougins need to learn of its greatness. 👏🏾
I've been hooked on your videos since day one and I've watched every video. Best channel on UA-cam. Much love from Cape Town, South Africa and I'm watching this under a tree as I feed the lions.
Greatest comment ever 😂 Much love from the US 🙏
Justice’s Cross is a REAL f cking 5 🎤/ GOAT album. This project is the Dilla Donuts of electronic music. Excellent breakdown.
This is one of those albums that is so perfect that despite not being that into the style in general it shines through so strong it can't help but be a favourite
Getting the notification for this video just made my day. Thank you for all your hard work.
🙏🙏🙏
Would have never known these things about this album without you. What a beautiful sonic tapestry Justice created, an album I'll listen to as long as I live.
common digging the greats w
"Stress" gonna stress me up?? Never in my life! I love "Stress", I always listened to it to calm myself down in trains 😅
Didnt expect you to cover anything related to Justice. Thanks a lot!!!
Ate shroom's once with this album & man did it bing me back to the 1st ever time listening to it. It made it sound so fresh & raw.
shrooms and justice baby
I was the producer for the band Lowenbad. I used micro sampling all over their album. There’s samples all over it that even the original artist wouldn’t be able to pick out.
Justice's Cross album is in my top 10 to this day. Amazing breakdown and resampling work btw
On the same day as the new album? Nice timing!
Also, thanks for all the new tracks to add to my Spotify Playlist! Have to pause every so often just to do so before I forget, lol.
This is one of my favorite albums ever found your channel last week this is sick
So happy Justice is getting some love here. I think another sample on Stress right after the intro is Night On Disco Mountain by David Shire.
Sure is! Song IS stressful but it's so well crafted.
400 Samples? Jez!!! That's more than what The Beastie Boys did with the album "Paul's Boutique".
I'm also surprised you didn't mention Jay-Z sample "D.A.N.C.E" for his classic jam "On To The Next One".
This is one of my all time favorite records!!!! Thank you for covering this!!!!
Wow, Ive stumble across this video yesterday and watched a couple others on your channel since. This is amazing! I have always loved album analyses, but these are just on another level. Ive literally had tears in my eyes a couple of times simply because you made me realize how beautiful these albums actually are and how much love and thought there is in it that is just in it because the artists enjoy it and don't even care if it gets discovered or not.
As a producer who loves sampling: this video is both fascinating and UTTERLY TERRIFYING.
How on earth did you SPOT all of these? Madness.
Deeply enjoyed this video. Your deconstruction and revelation has been very entertaining. What a great show of appreciation for an album that is hugely adored.
Great vid! This is the one album that made me fall in love with electronic music and the process from Justice is even more insane than I thought. Thank you
Amazing video. It feels so good to analyze and understand and album that I listened so many times.
I’m so happy to see this breakdown!!!! Thank you so much!!
Awesome video, thanks for the work ❤
I had no idea this album was produced like this. Incredibly impressive. Thank you for the break down!
SO crazy 🔥
Awesome vid about another classic album. I never knew all that went into this. Thanks again, professor, for breaking it down!
This was a really cool watch. Just subbed!
I PAUSED THE VIDEO @ 0:00 BECAUSE I KNOW (just like your other videos) IT IS GOING TO BE INCREDIBLE!!! THANK YOU FOR DOING A VIDEO ON JUSTICE AAAAHHHHHHH I CANT WAIT TO CLICK PLAY
Thanks for shining a light on and breaking down "Cross"! It's always been a great listen. Looking forward to their brand new album.
This is one of my all-time favorite albums! Thanks so much for breaking this down. I learned more than I already expected!
Great video mate. Hugely enjoyed that.
I am a Justice fan hyped and excited by the new album, and the glorious algorithm brings me here. FANTASTIC VIDEO.
New subscriber.
Great video! I've listened to this album hundreds of times and I didn't even know some of this stuff was samples. 400 samples, sampling every note of a chord from different songs, holy shit. Insane stuff.
One of my favorite albums of all time. Such a great breakdown, thanks dude!
I didn't expect a breakdown from this genre. It's refreshing to see something other than R&B and Hip Hop.
I haven't checked in here in a long time, being ensconced in your Patreon DTGs solely!. Congrats, on the 348K subscribers, almost 18K views in one day for this vid, and highly relational and classy representation of your sponsor Tracklib. Damn Brandon - DGT is taking off!!!! ❤
Oooooh baby covering Justice!!! Love to see that on this channel. Big up!
This is one of my all-time favorite albums. I appreciate you!
Crazy dope video bro!!
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
This one's great as always!
I remember buying this cd when it dropped lol This album is one of my favorites off all time. Thank you so much for covering this album. Salute to you. Salute to Justice.
Well researched and presented, dude. Salute 🫡
you really nailed this one Sir! great video
Thank you for another wonderful lesson, Professor! 🙏🏽💯
Great work. Another great video. Justice's new album is Dope AF! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Amazing breakdown per usual
this is so fire your love for music shines through
Incredible content my man.
I love your channel. Discovery of the year.
THIS IS AMAZING!! I LOVE IT!!
Absolutely love Justice such legends and great video as always. I would love to see a video breaking down either JayLib or just Madlib in general, some of the loops on The Unseen are worth talking about.
So happy to see some Justice content!
This content is freakin amazing. Been listening to justice nonstop lately so this was perfect timing. Also you did Newjack pretty well 😂
thank. you for giving this the recognition it deserves!
Thank you for the breakdown
This video is a masterclass. I've been listening to † for over a decade and i didn't even realize most of these were samples!
Thanks for this great video. The minute I heard their intro, I was hooked. It sounded fresh and original in a time we heard a lot of rock-punk-disco tracks. This is a true timeless album because it still sounds fresh and original!
I’ve always wanted to know more about this album. To me it’s just a masterclass of electronic production. Thankyou
Brilliant episode m8!
Fantastic man!
Stress is such a god damn amazing song and now that I know what they sampled it’s even better for me
Your videos are second to none dawg
Really enjoying this! Definitely on a Justice kick after hearing the new stuff!
Side mention;
Super appreciate how the sponsor segment is actually very relevant to the topic and not just an add for a vpn, freemium game, brilliant or some other distracting nonsense.
This video really peaked my curiosity. And the way you talk about it sounds similar to the Daft Punk process.
Will listen to this for sure! Thank you for the recommendation and, above all else, for.being in love with music ❤
Thank you for introducing me to a new artist I've never heard of. I'll be binging the group on pandora this whole weekend
you mean to tell me that the bass that I LOVE on all the Justice albums isn't real!?
...
I need more.
All positive intentions, I love so much how you understand and can explain what's going on with music - I just want to comment that I find listening to you for the whole video a little hard. You're really clear and well spoken which goes a long way, you've got good speaking skills, it's just that you often use the same patterns of speech eg. slow down on the end of most sentences for emphasis, or just slow throughout to stress it, and not so much variation in your pitch and tone. I'm not a vocal coach but just tried to notice why I find it hard to stay interested the whole video when I'm interested in what you're talking about, and realised it's the vocal work - hope this is constructive, love what you do and look forward to more. This is an awesome album and an awesome breakdown !
My favorite album of all time. Thanks for this.
Seeing them in about a month live, the perfect time for a video such as this to deepen my appreciation of their craft
Incredible video thank you
excellent work!!!! I always thought this album was like the big beat from the late 90s grown into something new.
Wonderful video, profiling a wonderful album
One of my favorite albums of all time
It’s nice Justice is getting more and more recognition. I found out about them through bootleg MP3 (yes this was around 2010’s) and instantly blown away.
Always great to see Justice get some love!
Bro! This channel makes me want to make music. Been fooling around with the idea for years and I just might swing in it. You videos are truly an inspiration!
Doooooooo it
Holy shit what a lot of work they’re the kings. The most insane debut album of all time.
This and other songs on this album were my ringtones back in the day. Discovered Justice while digging into French music tangential to Daft Punk.
If we’re gonna go for it, you should do ‘c2c - tetra’
great chance to show off your scratching.
love the vids dtg 🤙
One of the greatest electronic albums of all time imo. So happy to see you talk about it.
Sweet video man
Love to see someone appreciating and breaking down my favorite album from Justice. I'd love to see a genuine Cross 2 album.
