Electric Independence: Daniel Lopatin (Oneohtrix Point Never) - Motherboard
Вставка
- Опубліковано 19 сер 2017
- Over the years I've always been surprised to see that this video uploaded to vice.com in 2010 had not been uploaded to youtube, so I decided to do it myself.
Description from the page:
"There's no doubt Daniel Lopatin, the quiet powerhouse behind the psychedelic cosmic synth project Oneohtrix Point Never, has a strong connection with his keyboards. Like his Roland Juno-60, nicknamed "Judy." She may not be the best in the world, but he talks about her like an old friend, and fortunately for all of us, treats her that way too.
In this episode of Electric Independence, Motherboard heads over to his home studio in Bushwick to talk with one of the leaders of the pack in the next generation of synthesizer masters, along with bands like Emeralds, Stella Om Source and Fever Ray. We also do a little pop music deconstruction - and get a peek at his awesome, charming gear."

Yo!! You're the guy I see on a bunch of vaporwave videos!!
isn't 3:08 - 4:02 undercover firefighter?
@@itsmesnacksnope it says unmaking the world on memory vague
I've been listening to him since I was 14, I'm 21 now. I always thought that he had this dark, doomer-like personality, but this interview shows that he's a funny dude! Beautiful smile. Thank you for everything, Daniel. You shaped my music taste forever.
snap
Man, everyone here talking about eccojams. This dude went on too make so many good things after that. He even was the musical director for The Weeknd’s super bowl halftime show! Proof that one small thing can lead too greater things!
just discovered eccojams. im addicted.
@@lemonaut1 Eccojams is good stuff!
Highly highly highly highly recommend Garden of Delete to everyone- the most individualistic and intense album he’s made so far. I absolutely love this guy, hopefully y’all get something out of his work too
Not quite sure how becoming the musical director for the weekend's super bowl half-time show is a greater accomplishment than anything oneohtrix has done prior to that..but yes, you're right..
Did he really? Wow, I did not know that. I'm excited to see how Daniel gets more involved in the mainstream while trying to maintain his creativity and essence. It's been fun watching remixes from Magic release with pop singers vocals over them. I hope he has more influence over pop as a whole as he moves forward.
Honestly one of the most important music interviews of the 21st century. Thank you.
Why is that?

That could actually work.

That is so insulting
Jonah meets Daniel.
History will be kind to Daniel. What a lad. Handsome smile too.
My absolute favorite musician. Dude's a genius. It's incredible to see the setup he used to create some of the greatest music I've ever heard.
i want him to actually address vaporwave and his reaction to it
Why would he? Everything “vaporwave” is trash except for him. And it exists because of him.
Why are you saying vaporwave is trash actually the genre grew soo big in the past few years that knew artists started making more albums and songs besides vaporwave made him what he truly is today a L E G E N D.
@@SpikedCollar666 Check out almost any album on the Vapor Realm channel and i'm certain you'll change your mind.
@@saifbakri8625 he doesnt even associate himself with that genre though. the only album that could be put in that box is literally this one. the rest are beyond just some sample flips. this and the early beer on the rug releases are cool and thats about it for me with "vaporwave". the name itself is just so cringy. just like the term chillwave which is what the name derives from that started as a joke on a now non existent satire website.
@@SpikedCollar666 the problem with "vaporwave" is that the people that take it seriously weren't there to listen to the whole joke, they probably knew about it from those stupid s a d b a r t playlists or whatever
Interestingly, this guy is one of the pioneers of vaporwave. Btw, his Good Time soundtrack is amazing
You're right is amazing.
He also did Uncut Gems which is also an amazing soundtrack. Mohegan Suite and The Ballad of Howie Bling are phenomenal
At this point, he is a new pioneer of electronic music
he is like the godfather of vaporwave, he literally created a genre XD
just watched the film. I heard the soundtrack first and loved it, but it added a whole new dimension while watching it play in a film. I also realized that film took place near where I live..
The Judy thing is really sweet
This man makes love to his synthesizers
just wanna say that I LOVE REPLICA! It's an incredible album
Just saw this guy play a show in Sydney last week, and I can say hands down that this was one of the most fully immersive experiences I have ever had. From the music, to the lighting and visuals… everything was on point. It felt like more of a hyper sensory experience than just listening to some music, closer to being inside a movie or painting than anything else.
wow, this is actually the setup he used to CREATE vaporwave. incredible
I believe he said he made Eccojams while bored at work on audacity lol
Pyravid TV what did he worked on?
Pyravid TV what a genius
@@PyravidCorp No he made the entire thing on one of his samplers
It's amazing how his creative process is always shifting and morphing. I swear every project he's on a different trip.
I relate to this music on a spiritual level. Idk if it the nostalgic factor of being in a hypnopompic state while falling asleep to the television in the late 80's/early 90's, the aesthetic and structure of sound that I grew up with hearing tangerine dream, even pink floyd as a young child.. I truly don't know. But I relate to it.
This is another level of inspirational. No. 1 on my bookmarks bar for any time I hit a wall.
For anyone wondering how It may feel for OPN when messing with music...
During the music parts of this video, switch up the video speed (0.5, 0.75, 1.25, 1.5).
Or hit 'custom' above that. Use your arrows to scroll between loads of varied speeds.
'K' and 'Spacebar' are both play and pause, 'M' is mute, alternate them/hit them together or even better, press and hold, to make glitchy stutters. (double tap, hold on second tap to avoid long pause)
See, everyone is a musician, and everything is an instrument.
(P.S. don't ride in an elevator with me XD.)
Damn, this really was an excellent moment of Internet.
I’d love to just sit and have an at-length conversation with him about everything and anything. He seems like a very interesting person who would have all sorts of interesting perspectives.

thank you ShockTheseTrees, very cool!
Thanks for the upload this interview is amazing.
This guy has been a big creative inspiration to me, it's intriguing to see how he makes his work sound so strange. Thanks for uploading!
thank you
So prescient of Vice to have this great interview all the way back in 2010. I'd say this was dead center of his creative prime but before he was very well known. Feel free to disagree. Nevertheless, document of a great artist in a peak period.
OPN music and visual works at a subliminal level, and I always thought one should listen and see OPN at the same time.

why is he so cute what the fuck
I'm so sad that that one piece he was messing with isn't a recorded track :(
I think it is though! I was listening to Daniel's music on shuffle and the song "Wayland Lincoln Border" came on - it sounds fairly similar to the one he's messing around with at the end of the video. Here's a link to the song: ua-cam.com/video/9bB_JIxlPYI/v-deo.html

I assume he recorded those arpeggio's at the end to be able to play them through each other at different speeds?
Reminds me of trippy 70s movies
Track at 3:42? I've always wondered this from the first time I watched this video on the vice website.
"Unmaking The World"
What is the m50-700 next to do SP555?

check out his record "A Pact Between Strangers"! very similar sound imo
Juno 60's are the bomb.I remember these boards from back in the day & they killed & still do.
He's talked about Antonioni's Passenger and Jack's performance in it, which song did it affect? I wanna see if I can see it
I can hear some of Explain in the background 7:48
Dan is such an inspiration to me.
Agreed, I hope one day I can meet him and pick his brain. I think the way he describes his style of music as encapsulated in the synth at the end is perfect. I think he is one of the most important electronic musicians in history, and he still has so much to give us.
The outro start remind me of the orb
if you're here commenting on vapourware and chuck person, also give yourself a treat and listen to DJ SCREW and his chopped and screwed stuff, thats the real protovaporwave haha jk. great interview.

Bruh, this was before the term "vaporwave" was used to describe the genre, heck, this is older than the word itself
What's the first song in the video?
The father of vaporwave
6:58 boom! Instant Boards of Canada
Which boards of Canada song?
@@tracevideoproductions the unreleased live track titled “Echus”
He produced The Weeknd
...and I'll bet Danny is the reason it's now >$2000 for a Juno-60, which sucks if watching this video made you fall in love with Judy.
It’s always been a very expensive synth, but it’s not too dissimilar from a lot of synths that go for a vintage sound today
Knowing synths and about VST's will change your world if youre even remotely interested in this type of stuff.. You genuinely don't have to spend a dime if you have a working computer.
@@sothisistheend in 80s juno was not so expensive. Daniel actually once stated that his father, who bought 'Judy' back in the days, was actually want to buy *new and shiny* Yamaha DX7, but ended up with Juno, coz price was not so high.
