Nah, probably just the classic L/R mixup when it comes to Japanese to English translations. Japanese has a sound that's sort of in between an L and an R sound. This game is a fairly realistic portrayal of the Entebbe raid in 1976 where the Israeli Defence Force successfully freed 102 hostages that had been hijacked by Palestinian terrorists and were being held captive in Uganda. One of the first videogames and certainly the first coin-op game to tackle such a serious real-life situation.
Just curious. I noticed you rarely shot at anything on the right side of the screen. Any reason for that or is the game just so batshit that you decided to save yourself the headache?
Imagine a line running vertically down the centre of the screen - player 1 only takes damage from enemies shooting the left half, and player 2 only takes damage from enemies shooting on the right. In single player it makes sense to shoot only those enemies that present an immediate threat (i.e. on the left) and leave those on the right, at least until you know they'll move into the left half of the screen.
I thought it was weird that there was a church in the first level, but this was decades before we waged wars against elected leaders who protected the few Christians still living in those places.

Sadly there is never a bonus level with the player character slapping the hostages for running in front of his bullets.
If I remember correctly, you can't continue if you lose against the last guy. You only get one chance to defeat him.
Also if you accidentally kill the pilot, you get the bad ending.
