I watched this video yesterday and thought to myself "You know what? This Shanksy fella is on to something. I'm going to piss my iPhone off first thing tomorrow!" Later on that night I went to plug my iPhone into the charger and it dead set shat itself, completely dead, and so now I literally have to go get a shitty 50c phone to replace whether I like it or not. Thanks for cursing my phone J-dog.
ya after 8 years of iphones a few months ago i ditched my iphone x and apple watch and bought a flip phone. ITS AWESOME. i still have an ipad mini to watch stuff on and for signal and emails but i dont scroll uselessly and mindlessly like i used to. it was books that did it. i have ADD but i used to read all the time. my brain got rewired thru 8 years of smart phones and i wanted my brain back. i wanted to be addicted to books again. and its super rad, i love it ☻
You're definitely right about the social media and notifications. I turn that shit off as soon as I get a new phone and set it to never vibrate unless it's an alarm or a phone call. Hearing other people's phones going off constantly annoys the hell out of me. I see it like this - smart phones are pretty good organisational tools when used properly. It's beneficial to be able to set reminders and appointments in a calendar, check public transport timetables, find my way around with an interactive map and jot down notes or ideas as they come to me.
A podcast I listen too did a sort of filler hypothetical question episode recently and I think it's relevant to what you're saying with kids on their smartphones, basically the question was 'if a robot waiter serves you a drink, should you thank them?' and one of the co-hosts recounted a story from one of their friends who has a toddler. A child brought up on using Siri and Alexa, who got used to the idea of being able to say 'hey siri do this' and it being done... kinda turned them into an asshole because they couldn't tell the difference between say, siri on the phone bringing up your contact list and asking a friend for help, since siri can't say no to anything. I mean I can't vouch for the parents not being assholes but like, the logic does add up. A child learns they can get what they want from their robot friend and is confused when someone tells 'em no. While I'm not a fan of like, taking away technology just because of a perception of evil. I just think going forward in the future Parents are gonna need to be way more aware of these sorts of things and making sure you're doing everything you can to bring 'em up right.
Jordan is the voice in the back of my brain frustratingly screaming great advice to me about all the shit I should be doing but aren't.👏 thanks for being in my face about it.
If you are having trouble getting rid of your phone, go on a long trip somewhere and leave your phone at home. You will learn to rely on other things. I promise you won't want your phone when you come back.
Two books that come to mind about the subject Jordie is talking about is "Addiction by Design" and "Irresistible: The Rise of Addictive Technology and the Business of Keeping Us Hooked", real creepy the shit both casinos and tech companies do.
Awesome to see Jordies has done this. I had been contemplating switching to a dumb phone for months. The night that I bought the dumb phone online was so anxious filled. Then later that night I had a dream. I was in the centre of about 10 people they all had a phone in each hand. Dumb phone in one and a smart phone in the other. Then they all simultaneously dropped the smart phone on the ground. In the morning I felt complete relief.
Great video, one of the best I’ve seen on the subject. I’ve been employed in the education sector for exactly 30 years. No need for rounds of thunderous applause, I wanted to work In aviation. Anyway; During the last 30 years I have observed a marked change in the ability of kids to really socialise in the real world in a genuine, true to themselves, non affected way, Noticed this dwindle. Fade. For them to interact without, consciously or subconsciously adopting false personas; without adopting an amalgam of mass media fake ‘ways to interact’, observed on videos and images via their devices, is rare. Teenage depression has increased dramatically; their ‘real’ personality is still in there somewhere. It wants to get out, to be seen, heard, loved, debated. To be taken the p out of, whatever; but it can’t. Layers of adopted ‘acceptable/cool’ personality smother it out. This leads to depression, to other mental health problems. Am I a qualified psychologist and educator? Yes. Is there research to back this up? Yes. Does it matter; yes. Teenage suicides are on the increase. Australia is in the top three in the world for mental health problems. Bet you can guess the other two. Jordie. For new year 2019, or sometime, anytime mate, can you do an update video on the environmental and human cost, eg mining and disposing of rare earths, of these devices? The fact that Android phones *can* be better than Apple phones yet *appear to* look cheaper. But they’re not. The unit cost is the same or higher, but, the end user is the product. The end user pays. The environment pays too. All such devices cost the same in terms of damaging our psyches, damaging our earth and, in time, damaging our physical health. Thanks mate, keep it up. Very sorry to have missed your Canberra show. As a footnote; cash marketing/sales value worth of this comment alone; Google now knows; The time I started using UA-cam. The kind of content I looked for. My approximate age. My location. My highest level of qualification and field of employment. Hence, my disposable income, by location and probable family size, who I buy for and a good idea of what it is and how much I spend. It has an approximate idea of my socio-political leanings and knows I care about the environment. It knows that I have an advanced knowledge of large set data analysis and geocomputational targeted advertising methods and analytical techniques, of privacy concerns. That I know what rare earths are, where they come from and who dies mining them...and lots more, such as, by inference, how much and where I travel and how much I’m likely to spend I on it. All that and more value from one, for me, rather long comment. 👋
Everything good thing in excess is a poison. Feels like a healthy middle ground would just be to uninstall social media apps and games. That's what I did, everything else on my iPhone is incredibly productive, useful and overall critical to me performing my job. I listen to self-help podcasts and audio books on my long drives and at the gym thanks to this device too. The device itself isn't entirely the problem, it's the people that use them. For some people these devices have turned their disorganised and unmotivated lives around. The Google Keep app alone is responsible for me achieving my goals and keeping my shit together in general. It's like snake venom in small doses being used as medicine. Agree with the overall sentiment of this video though.
I started Uni 6 months ago and this sounds like a good idea, especially cause my phone plan is over in a few weeks. As long as I can get one with a good gps, I'll heavily consider it.
Such a weird thing to point out, but... how do you check your bank regularly? 90% of my phone use out-and-about is either for music or checking how much money I have when I buy ssomething. How do you keep track as easily without having to run off to a bank or get home to a computer to check it.
Other good tips include- put your phone into 'grayscale' mode. Put all the distracting apps like as far away from first page of icons as possible. Turn off notifications for all the apps you don't want them from. Put phone on do not disturb in a drawer at opposite end of room when working etc.
He gave out a list of his top 10 books after his show in Melbourne and they were (This was before Tools of Titans came out): 1. Personal Power - Tony Robbins 2. Yeah nah Ive avoided getting a smart phone, I have one like yours Jordan and that as far as Ive gone. Big buttons, I like big buttons. I had a mobile phone in the late 1980s for my mobile mechanics business, it was a huge brick I carried around in a bag and no-one had a hand held mobile phone. Sometimes I would be outside in front of a shop talking to a customer and Id get people stop and stare, they knew what it was but it didn't stop the staring at me like I had my doodle hanging out. Once I was in a supermarket and the checkout chicks there said to me 'You must be rich", I'm like how do you figure that, they said "Only rich people have mobile phones" I said but I'm a mechanic how can I be rich, its just for work anyway, they persisted, "But you must be rich anyway" By about 1990 I grew to hate the thing after it became apparent that my customers realised they could call me 24/7 and I had no excuse that I was away from the phone, even during sexy time with my girl friend or eating or whatever.. The problem was If I didn't answer it Id have to call them back and the call cost per minute was off the scale. These days I have it for business still otherwise I would not have one but i don't answer it if I'm doing something, I'm busy, why should I stop what I'm doing to answer the phone, I have a life. If I have nothing to do Ill call people back or if someone calls and I'm am doing nothing Ill answer it just like I would n the old days before mobile phones. As for sitting there looking at it like a PC screen, no far king way, would just do my head in. The desk top PC is at home and when I'm home and bored then fine, but if I'm not at home then I'm busy doing life. Anyway I enjoyed your vidjay.
I make social media work for me. I talk to people on twitter to get better at formulating ideas. I use snapchat to directly connect with my friends so we can hang out. I post on instagram to show things I think are interesting and caption them with ideas that i want people to see and think about. I realized this one day, and learned to use them as tools for self development, the key is you have to turn off notifications (except for texts from ur mom obviously) and take about a month break from it. It's a learning curve but it's possible.
1min25 in the video and you are already reminding me of a younger Rob Lowe. The resemblance is striking! Great video and watching this on my laptop :-)
I have a job that requires a fair bit of focus and reading thru material, I find it so hard to focus longer than 5-10 mins I literally pick up my phone and check it for no fucking reason every 5-10 mins.
I have a smartphone but I uninstall all the non-essential apps like facebook, I had a big problem with getting distracted, still do a bit with youtube but I can't remove that lmao
I used to use a piece of shit brick, then I got a smart phone. It was horrible for about a year until I learnt to turn off all notifications at all times, put it on silent, and turn off data when I'm not actively using it. When I am using it it's really good for wifi hotspots and having a map.
I’m considering doing this as like a “ooo I’m going to give up my smart phone for a week and see what happens’ bullshit little challenge because that way I can justify it to myself afterwards when I cave in and go ‘nah fuck this shit it hasn’t even got Shazam, how will I ever know what this song playing at the cafe is’
When trying to get anything done having a smart phone is the equivalent to having a brass band in your pocket that keeps blasting out tunes. Even when you're in bed trying to fall asleep. Pure degeneracy.
ive had a flip phone for the past 6 months and they have been the greatest 6 months of my life, not that the two are related but im really glad i switched to normal phones
Just picked up the Telstra Lite 2, $29 dollars at Big W talk about inflation!, Can you please do a video review Jordie would be hilarious. Full feature walk through, drop test and battery life etc.
Jordan mate! I appreciate your concern about smart phone usage but you seem to just be doubling down on the hippy life! I have derived benefit from my smartphone with the convenience of listening to music which i find to be a great motivator. Also the benefits of using your phone as a portable book and calculator to save paper waste. If anything this video taught me to stay vigilant about the use of certain apps that capitalise on the vegas strategy, SO here's what i'm going to do 1Disable ALL notifications aside from the core phone, message, alarm etc. 2. Find a way to temporarily disable all addictive apps in my susceptible hours morning/night 3. Treat my smartphone usage as the ultimate test of discipline Godspeed you hipster hair buffoon and what a nice stick you found I'm sure you can find multiple uses for bashing it on things Love you bye
Another tip would be to turn your phone to monochrome. A smartphone with no color is 90% less addictive. You'll use it less, when you use it you'll stay on task better and it makes scrolling Facebook 10x less attractive. You'll pick up your phone with purpose, achieve that purpose and put it down. Our brain are evolved to be attracted to color. Do you ever remember watching black and white movies as a kid. They're boring as fuck. You need to be an adult who is interested in the content of the movie for that shit to hold your attention. Color TV... well... people watch rubbish all day... cause it's shiny and colorful.
Look, if I could get a dumb phone, I would but I'm addicted to mine and social media. You make good points. I can't read 50 books in a year, look I'll go for 25 books in my field as my goal in 2018. Love you, don't lose your head.
Already deleted all but facebook before I watched this(only real reason is to be able to keep in touch with certain people who I am only connected to on there). This video is mostly reinforcement of that. Other than that, I also see it as a tool I can utilize in the future, in case i need to promote anything, then I already have a collection of people I can outreach to. Every day I find myself holding my phone less and less, most times to just change the song im listening to lol. I like to think this is his Fiddler on The Roof moment 'TRADITIOOOOOOOON, TRADITION!" But the over stimulation issue with developing technology is definitely not good. The idea that we are building close to a real virtual reality, the idea of escaping to a different world entirely, becoming more and more immersed, but how deep is too deep... I think our current mental health crisis is only to worsen if we only add a more effective coping mechanism for 'actually' escaping reality.
Hey Jordies, you made some persuasive points about them there manipulative social media sites like FB and twitter but why not just delete those apps from your smartphone and still use the other good shit? I use my phone to listen to podcasts and audiobooks, order food, call ubers, navigate using the GPS, youtube, answering emails and look shit up on the internet. This is still mostly a wonderful miracle of technology, right?
I use my phone because I hate people. That's not a bad thing. I fucking despise society and I'd rather be in a digital dreamscape than in this hell of a world. Fuck my brain, fuck the world, I'm getting drunk. I'm already drunk. I'm gonna go do something bogan. Love you Jordie.
I wanna know your thoughts on reading fiction. It seems you would consider non-fiction more mentally stimulating and i would be inclined to agree as i exclusively read fiction for entertainment and i never really got the feeling of "working out" your brain after finishing a book. Yet to describe reading as work or a chore regardless of genre kinda seems to ignore those that read as a hobby.
It's not the blue of facebook that triggers the circadian response, it's the blue tinge of screens - this simulates morning light, and has little to do with the color of the sky but the temperature of the light. Pretty much any color screen produces this light (even your feature phone).
There was a compilation video on facebook where kids around the ages of 4-6 ordered stuff off of ebay off mummy's ipad and this isn't small shit like pokemon cards, this was a $1000 bit on an Xbox, two special edition Lego sets, a new bed that the kid said to his brother "That was for you." but the brother said. "You said it was for the dog!" And the parents are recording this like "Isn't that cute? I'm a little annoyed but you know he's really smart."
Speaking of babysitting your kids with an ipad.. Has anyone worked out why UA-cam never pulled down those Elsagate videos for copyright infringement? Or how they had a million views in a few minutes? If people are babysitting their kids with those channels we are truly fucked.
In studying for a final exam at uni I found that I would literally have a pull and DING go off in my head to check the phone, and and as well as that as soon as I would sit at the computer I would instantly think youtubeyoutubeyoutube. Its so addicting its scary as hell First step is to get rid of the PC and move it out of my room so I cant go from kookslams to pillow in the space of 1min
i still have my smartphone (i need the GPS) but i stay away from my phone unless i need it, it's currently in the kitchen somewhere...... at work its locked away. So much happier
Pretty irrelevant, but I'd be fascinated to see your book collection, or do you go to the library? After watching this I'd be surprised if you went for digital books. But it must be a decent personal collection even if you give your books away after.
It's official, Jordan has sold out to Crazy John's
rip crazy john :(
Now it's crazy jords
I watched this video yesterday and thought to myself "You know what? This Shanksy fella is on to something. I'm going to piss my iPhone off first thing tomorrow!" Later on that night I went to plug my iPhone into the charger and it dead set shat itself, completely dead, and so now I literally have to go get a shitty 50c phone to replace whether I like it or not. Thanks for cursing my phone J-dog.
Watching this on a smartphone I don't know how to feel
Get a flip phone
Same
If get an old Nokia people are just going to think you're a dealer.
So basically smart phones consume attention and overstimulate, making it harder for you to desire and accomplish goals.
Kanonamos it’s pornography
ya after 8 years of iphones a few months ago i ditched my iphone x and apple watch and bought a flip phone.
You listen to 'Hello Internet'? I listen to 'Hello Internet'!!! Did we just become best friends?!
Ayyy, damn straight.
TIMS UNITE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! haha
A Dumb Phone will make you hate your phone again. The way it‘s supposed to be.
The melody for the phone hand gag was the Pokemon Centre healing tune

Just realising how blessed I am that I spent my entire childhood with a flip phone, they laughed at me... who's laughing now?

For new year 2019, or sometime, anytime mate, can you do an update video on the environmental and human cost, eg mining and disposing of rare earths, of these devices?
The fact that Android phones *can* be better than Apple phones yet *appear to* look cheaper. But they’re not.

As a footnote; cash marketing/sales value worth of this comment alone;
Google now knows; The time I started using UA-cam. The kind of content I looked for. My approximate age. My location. My highest level of qualification and field of employment.
Hence, my disposable income, by location and probable family size, who I buy for and a good idea of what it is and how much I spend.

Watching this on a Nokia 8110 lol 😂
Compromise fix: Just delete all your social media apps and turn off notifications for other things
The problem is that people use tech as toys, rather than tools.
Have you got a citation for the claim about re-focusing after looking at your phone?
I’m considering doing this as like a “ooo I’m going to give up my smart phone for a week and see what happens’ bullshit little challenge because that way I can justify it to myself afterwards when I cave in and go ‘nah fuck this shit it hasn’t even got Shazam, how will I ever know what this song playing at the cafe is’

Color TV... well... people watch rubbish all day... cause it's shiny and colorful.
mate, that's actually fascinating. is there an article or some shit to read upon this topic? cheers bruz
Callum Baker That is a quality tip mate. Never heard that before, doing it now!
I've always had a "Dumb Phone"
Look, if I could get a dumb phone, I would but I'm addicted to mine and social media. You make good points. I can't read 50 books in a year, look I'll go for 25 books in my field as my goal in 2018. Love you, don't lose your head.
You can live without a smart phone
McDonald’s for your brain?! Exactly right! That flat and colourless, tasteless fuzz of nonsense
That was a pokemon reference at 0:53 wasnt it
Just stumbled upon and ordered a dumb phone. Harvey Norman has a Telstra prepaid version on sale for 9 bucks.
I already bought my dumb phone.
Great vid matey, lots of good points made.
now i can feel gud about having a shit phone
Jordan is marketing against his own platform... how will I consume you Jordan?
Hey Jordies, you made some persuasive points about them there manipulative social media sites like FB and twitter but why not just delete those apps from your smartphone and still use the other good shit? I use my phone to listen to podcasts and audiobooks, order food, call ubers, navigate using the GPS, youtube, answering emails and look shit up on the internet. This is still mostly a wonderful miracle of technology, right?
I'm a Christian that got married in my 20s and has kids. I don't have friends so I don't need social media. I dodged a bullet there
I use my phone because I hate people. That's not a bad thing. I fucking despise society and I'd rather be in a digital dreamscape than in this hell of a world. Fuck my brain, fuck the world, I'm getting drunk. I'm already drunk. I'm gonna go do something bogan. Love you Jordie.
Holy cow, my name is Matt! My phone is calling me!
Is that an alcatel? I got one too, dumbest phones out!
Thanks for the reminder dude
hang on a minute. what channel is this? how long as this running for and why didn't it mention it on your main?
It's not the blue of facebook that triggers the circadian response, it's the blue tinge of screens - this simulates morning light, and has little to do with the color of the sky but the temperature of the light. Pretty much any color screen produces this light (even your feature phone).
True, but I'm pretty sure exclusively blue light doesn't help.
join the anti smart phone revolution. Everything Jordan is saying is right. My life has never been as productive as now.
I'm watching this on my smartphone. I agree.
yknow whatd be ironic...watching this video on a smart phone
So, that means Dumbphones are for Smart a**?
hand gestures, love it.
Does this mean this will be the last friendlyjordies video I’ll ever watch? Will you release them on vhs for those of us that heed your advice?
KJlambo1 Really? Ur tho thmarrrt...
Okay Dad.
when the video laughs and you get spit all over your face
The cheapest dumb phone at target is $29, and it's locked to optus
Can you make a video on book recommendations? Thanks
bought a nokia 3310...got nothing to lose and a life to gain back.
cheers bro
💯% I will be getting a dumb phone and using my personal 💻 for worldwide web and mobile device as a phone call and text not banking and Instagram etc
what happens if you read books on your smart phone?
You're pretty cool Jordan :)
The irony of watching this video... It buuuuurns!
Thank you.
If the phone gets stucks in our hand. Porn just got really difficult
You also need to do this for UA-cam and Facebook!! O wait... :)
Srsly, FB is a HUGE distraction, and addictive.
omg im so addicted to youtube but its hard to get off, its like i replaced youtube for fb and instagram
In studying for a final exam at uni I found that I would literally have a pull and DING go off in my head to check the phone, and and as well as that as soon as I would sit at the computer I would instantly think youtubeyoutubeyoutube.
Its so addicting its scary as hell
First step is to get rid of the PC and move it out of my room so I cant go from kookslams to pillow in the space of 1min
Dagum, my flip phone was 200 bucks
i still have my smartphone (i need the GPS) but i stay away from my phone unless i need it, it's currently in the kitchen somewhere...... at work its locked away. So much happier
LOL at mocking the voice over dude from funniest home videos. It has been years coming but finally someone mocks him good.
I got a Nokia 3310 shit phone from Target and it does perform well.
Fantastic ending sentence
Pretty irrelevant, but I'd be fascinated to see your book collection, or do you go to the library? After watching this I'd be surprised if you went for digital books. But it must be a decent personal collection even if you give your books away after.
I watched this video on my smart phone
