I never got into instagram. Deactivated Facebook and got rid of the app on my phone. Felt better. Then I became super withdrawn, stopped reaching out, social life massively diminished. Kind of ended up with the opposite of the intended effect. Got super depressed because I'm a massive extravert. Just close friends and family were my only interactions and the times I see them aren't really enough to keep me satiated. Then I logged back in one day to find out I'd missed 4 parties that I was invited to. Two 30ths, a regular party, and one for my friend becoming a citizen. Still never went back to using Facebook but I was pretty bummed that I missed out on all this stuff that would have made me feel heaps better. That's what happens when social media is the norm for organizing gatherings. If you aren't on it, you're out of the loop.
Completely agree. I’ve tried this so many times and people are just unwilling to make an exception for you and send invites directly. You could argue “well they’re not good friends” but it’s also just easier for them to send one invite on Facebook? While deleting Instagram and Facebook is a good idea to stop seeing shit that brings you down, you do also miss out on a lot purely because it’s what EVERYONE else uses
Hi Jordie - was curious on your thoughts with the effects stemming from UA-cam? Find UA-cam to almost be a double edged sword whereby there's so much knowledge to gain on UA-cam but it can easily be consumed in excess, arguably to one's detriment. Anyway, love the work mate. Keep fighting the good fight!
If you're on Android use the app "Newpipe" for youtube. Disables ads, plays audio when your phone is locked, allows you to save playlists without logging in, you can save video or audio to your phone, and lets you disable recommended and trending videos and comments. Blocking the recommended videos helps break the cycle of constantly clicking the next video
I don't know about getting rid of it altogether, but I still enjoy Instagram for discovering great visual art etc. High end/clever photography, drawings, paintings, video art etc, was the original pre-Facebook-owned purpose of it. If you unfollow everything but that stuff, it gets better...and you look at it a lot less.
I needed this today. I deleted it off my phone. Didn't work UA-cam now has stories and they're trash but I keep watching. Keep scrolling posts I've already seen. I need a dumb phone.
A scary tought Shonks, most peoples ”screen-time” is around 3-5 hours daily. In just 15 years, every single human has started to spend around 40% of their time being awake, every single day. Some people spend even more aswell. In just 15 years every single human has started to spend 40% of their time on this fundamentally different experience, looking at history this big a change to daily habits is unpreecedented
I'm really grateful to this channel, I've joined the Wayne Dwyer tier on the patreon and I'm really trying to quit my Facebook and Twitter habits bc I actually am happier now that I don't use tiktok anymore, and twitter is the next worst app I think
Really awesome insight on Instagram. I gave up Instagram a year ago and am definitely much happier. Another thing that really pisses me off is how easy it becomes to be easy to gain fame through "influencers" all they do is create fuel for those people who are you talking about.
Most effective steps I've found for breaking bad habits: 1) Remove access to the habit as much as possible - For social media: delete apps, logout if you're on a PC, use a dumb phone or use lock out apps 2) Identify your triggers for a habit and actively replace it with something else - Rather than jumping on instagram whenever you've got a 5-10 minutes to burn, read an e-book, or do some goal writing or planning for a project 3) Consciously think about what you're actually getting out of whatever you're doing - Does it actually make you happy? Are you really 'keeping in touch' with people? For social media I found it effective to think of doom scrolling as just doing unpaid work to make Mark Zuckerberg a bit richer. 4) If you find yourself missing it, don't worry, such a state is temporary. Usually gets noticeably easier after a week or 2. If you can stick with it for over a month you'll find you probably don't miss it at all. Recommend to anyone who's interested in this stuff to give James Clear's Atomic Habits a read
I have deleted Instagram multiple times over the last few years for periods of time ranging from 3 months to a year and I find I am so much more happy and productive without it. I still open my phone with the intention of using it sometimes only to find it’s not there though, it’s crazy how deeply ingrained the reward pathways are. I can only image the amount of motivation is stripped by it that could be used doing things we enjoy. I have been looking for an excuse to let go of my iPhone all together and when my old phone stopped working I decided I wouldn’t buy another one but then only a week later someone “gifted” me a newer version as a hand me down because they got the 11 or something.
I've still got to keep a smart phone around for work stuff. but deleting instagram was one of the best moves ive made. Also still upset you had to head out straight after the sydney show on thursday. Was a great show from the front row xx
I agree with what you said about instagram. I exclusively use it for viewing others cars in the car community, its not like that with cars, but the little pieces of main stream media that leaked through, is exactly how you explained it.
Hello Jordan: Thank you . For more than I decade, I have felt very queasy about Facebook etc. I thought it damaged peoples lives. It still does. Stay well and safe.
This video definitely helped me to come to the conclusion to get a dumb phone. I’ve been off social media for a couple of years now (I use Facebook messenger to communicate to loved ones however) but even then, having a smart phone just consumes so much time with me checking messages, emails, UA-cam, internet etc. it’s poison to productivity and efficiency. Sadly, social media is a necessary evil for my aspiring career (I’m a composer/audio engineer), so I’m unfortunately going to have to utilize social media in order to gain traction. If you have any advice/tips as to how I can navigate this necessary evil without getting sucked into the vortex, I would love to hear your thoughts! Love ya xo
Best advice I've heard if you have to engage with social media is to timebox your activity. Treat it like a job, you have say a half hour to post, network and engage with commenters etc. then you stop and go onto whatever else you're working on.
Yo guys don't get a dumb phone, just buy the Lock Me Out app (if you have Android). You can also get Cold Turkey Blocker for the PC. Lock Me Out is tamper proof, and with a little bit of changing to the group policy settings you can make the Cold Turkey Blocker permanent too.
you are utilizing social media to your advantage and to spread and reach out / get exposure, its a tool. Its toxic to consume it on a daily basis mindlessly.
As someone who uses social media for my business (Music mixer!), The best way to go about it is through a desktop. Can make a plan for what I need to do on there, smash everything out as I've got all of my fingers typing, and get the eff off. I sometimes use my phone to generate leads as insta stories are one way I find people who might want to work with me!
Jordan ive been watching you here and there but in this video specifically I really just reginozed your energy and I just wanted to say I saw my energy in how how your were just talking expressing yourself living your hands and I googled your birthday and your a Leo just like I was born on the 14th your amazing Jordan and this video inspired me to also share my thoughts and out myself out there to thank you
Yeah and you get mad shamed for not being on your phone and using every platform. Heaven forbid I don't walk around attached to my phone. People get actually worked up, it's ridiculous. People don't have deep conversation anymore either, they get to the social venue and immediately take photos of the alcohol they're about to drink so they can post it on their various bragging apps. Makes my skin crawl.
Deleted it. Thanks. Was uninstalling and the installing the app again. Huge part of my brain justified it "its nice to unwind" Then the other part is "why are you making dopamine so easy, you should be bored, bored is good" You always convince yourself you need it. So i go on, and give anyone important my number and permanently deleted it. Can you believe it takes a month to permanently go... facebook did the same thing cheeky fuckers. I had willpower once I can do it again. I teach highschoolers and hearing them describe being "stuck on it and wanting to throw the phone accross the room" seeing them be afraid to be bored or misbehaving if they finish an art task and have 0.2 seconds of boredom... the future is really grim.

I usually pre-map out my course using Google Maps on a computer before I go anywhere out of the ordinary. When all else fails, someone near you probably still has a smart phone and can help you out, ha.
Heya, just have a quick question. Ive downloaded heaps of those workbooks from the masterclass website. Do you have any tips for mitigating that brain fog you have after looking/ reading from a screen for a long time?
I think I’m being dumb here but the point @ 9:10 does Jordan mean that replacing social media and video games with playing with lego will not give you a clear mind?
Add Twitter to your list of complete wastes of time. We have a household rule of no Twitter, no tiktok, no Instagram, no reddit, no discord. The adults do have Facebook, only because that is the way we have to get communications about upcoming sports team events etc for the kids, and stay in contact with relatives who don’t live nearby. It is working so far.

Eventually the internet is stopped being revered as the God of this world. Think of all of the goals of the internet being accomplished without it. Control struggles in a society out of control.
Unfortunately I can't even get away from the internet or social media much. Never got instagram, snapchat, tiktok, facebook, got rid of reddit, got rid of messenger. Go to university: everything is still online. The content I'm learning, the videos they give, the timetables, just trying having to open up a laptop knowing I'm going on the world wide web just to look at which chapter to read in my actual book is distracting, it's a completely different mindset. The internet is not the place you go to when you want to be actually productive, so you just enter that unproductive mindset. And of course now I have a group project where the group decided "Yep, Messenger is what we'll use to talk to each other!" So it's not like I can just say "no, I don't want to participate in this project assessment because Messenger bad." So here comes Messenger again!!! Grew up playing the playstation 1 and 2, which lead to me having an Xbox, which means that when I'm not on UA-cam, when I'm not on the internet or looking at my computer screen to study, I'm going on the internet again, on an xbox, for enjoyment. Am trying to get into books more as a result.
Jordan, I guarantee that I can get you to reprogram your brain about cigarettes. Read 'The Official Guide to Success', and commit to do the smoking page for a month. Not only is it awesome to rid yourself of those trashy thoughts, but the empowerment that comes from seeing how you can change your brain is awesome.
I've still got Instagram on my phone, which makes it more remarkable that I haven't used it in years. I'm like Gandhi with the hot chicks trying to seduce him lol
Jordan: Is trying to help you get clean from constant satisfaction and changing environments, where you never focus for too long on something. UA-cam in the middle of him talking: AT BUNNINGS WAREHOUSE YOU CAN GET THE BATHROOM *YOU* WANT!!!

Idk, I don't use insta much, but my wall is full of animals and funny memes
I would delete them if I was stupid enough to sign up to them in the first place.

What's the best budget dumb phone 💀💀💀
Whichever one is cheap and works well enough where you live.
Jordan, I guarantee that I can get you to reprogram your brain about cigarettes. Read 'The Official Guide to Success', and commit to do the smoking page for a month. Not only is it awesome to rid yourself of those trashy thoughts, but the empowerment that comes from seeing how you can change your brain is awesome.
should honestly do one on porn as well. i cant remember if youve done anything on this, but it robs us of so much
UA-cam shorts is pretty bad too
I've still got Instagram on my phone, which makes it more remarkable that I haven't used it in years. I'm like Gandhi with the hot chicks trying to seduce him lol
